Norman Patrick Caldwell Sr.

PAGELAND - Mr. Norman Patrick Caldwell Sr., 87, of Pageland, South Carolina went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 while surrounded by his loving family.

Norman was born on May 25, 1930 in Gaston County, North Carolina to the late Robert McKinley Caldwell and Carrie Horton Caldwell. He later met and united in marriage to the late Caronell Gaskins Caldwell. After serving in the United States Army, Norman served the community of Pageland for over 40 years as a rural mail carrier with the United States Postal Service where he loved to do specials things for his patrons on his mail route. He was later elected to the Board of Directors for Sandhill Telephone Company where he made a big impact for 30 years. Norman loved his town and was proud to call Pageland home. Norman had a servant’s heart, he received great joy by visiting the less fortunate. Norman was a frequent visitor to nursing homes, hospitals and those recovering at home, he made a point to take gifts to those that were bereaved. He was the type of person who had a unusual sense of humor and never met a stranger. One of Norman’s biggest passions was the joy he received from giving back, he could not tell anyone “No”. He was truly a Christian man who loved his Lord. Norman was a member of First Baptist Church of Pageland where he served as a former Deacon, a member of Pageland-Jefferson Lions Club where he held multiple positions as well as a member of the American Legion of Pageland where he served as past Commander. Norman was a staple in the Pageland Community and he will be missed dearly by all who had the privilege to know him. In addition to his parents and his loving wife, Norman is predeceased by a son-in-law, Billy Cato; brothers, Lenard, Clayton, Aaron and Lloyd Caldwell and one sister, Mary Rowell.

Those left to celebrate and remember his life include his loving sons, Norman Patrick Caldwell Jr. (Wanda) of Wingate, North Carolina and Philip Gaskins Caldwell (Toni) of Concord, North Carolina; daughter, Melinda Caldwell Cato of Pageland, South Carolina; five grandchildren, Beth Plyler Halasz (Daniel) of Greenville, South Carolina, Clark Ashton Cato of Jefferson, South Carolina, Lauren Elizabeth Caldwell of Concord, North Carolina, Lindy Suzanne Caldwell of Concord, North Carolina and William Robert Cato III (Barbara) of Pageland, South Carolina; four great-grandchild, Merin Halasz of Greenville, South Carolina, McKayla Cato, Xander Cato and Aliza Cato all from Pageland, South Carolina; brother-in-law, Donnie Gaskins (Geraldine) of Chesterfield, South Carolina and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held on Monday, September 25, 2017 at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Pageland with Dr. Joel Dale officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family received friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Sunday, September 24, 2017 in the Sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Pageland, 203 Pigg Street, Pageland, South Carolina 29728.

Mary C. Hilliard

CHERAW - Mrs. Mary C. Hilliard, age 87, entered into rest on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at her home. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, September 25, 2017 at Old St. David’s Episcopal Church, (located within Old St. David’s Cemetery) 91 Church Street, Cheraw, SC with burial following in the Old St. David’s Cemetery. The family received friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Sunday, September 24, 2017 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hilliard was born December 31, 1929 in New Dorp Staten Island, NY a daughter of the late James J. and Rose Heydock Collins. She was the owner and operator of Mary’s Restaurant for over 39 years and was a friend to all. Mrs. Hilliard was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Mary not only enjoyed feeding her customers, but also God’s creatures. Her love of animals was shown each day as she provided food for them as well.
In addition to her parents, Mary was also preceded in death by her 2 husbands, Ward H. Thompson and Herbert Hilliard; companion, Perry Isgett; son, David Thompson; brother, James J. Collins; sister, Irene Rosell; and 1 grandson, Jason Lang.
Survivors include 3 children, Susan Lang of Cheraw, SC, Douglas (Janice) Thompson, and Rose Marie “Cookie” (Gene) Herndon both of Cheraw, SC; grandchildren, Daniel (Kacy) Teal of Chesterfield, SC, Matthew Teal of Colorado, Jennifer Lang and Jack Thompson both of Cheraw, SC; and 8 great grandchildren.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Agape Hospice for the love and care shown to Mrs. Mary and her family.

Cynthia Sarah Huntley Crocker

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Cynthia Sarah Huntley Crocker passed away Sept. 13, 2017 surrounded by her loving family.

Cynthia retired from teaching after 32 years with Jefferson County Public Schools, but continued serving her community through volunteer work at her church and many other organizations.

Cynthia is survived by her husband, Arnold H. Crocker and her children, Deidre (Christopher), Renee (Jerry), Danielle (Demetrius) and Kim; grandchildren, Maya, Zoe and August.

Visitation was from 6-8pm Friday at New Zion Baptist Church, 1501 So. 34th St. Funeral Services were 11am Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017 at the church. Burial was in Louisville Memorial Gardens East. A.D. Porter & Sons, 1300 W. Chestnut St. in charge of arrangements.

Barbara W. ‘Bobby’ Freeman

CHERAW - Mrs. Barbara W. “Bobby” Freeman, age 84, entered into rest on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at her home. A Celebration of Life Service was held at 2:00 PM Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Chesterfield Baptist Church by Pastor Randy Bishop and Phillip Caulder, Jr. with burial following in the Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family greeted friends at the cemetery following the service of committal and other times at the home of Suzanne and William Gainey.
Mrs. Freeman was born August 12, 1933 in Chesterfield County, SC a daughter of the late Thurman Ellison and Letha Smith White. She was a homemaker and faithful member of Chesterfield Baptist Church. Mrs. Freeman was a loyal charter member of the Chesterfield Soup Kitchen and served on the staff. Bobby enjoyed playing golf and was a member of numerous golf leagues. She was an active lady from square dancing with her husband in their early years to serving as the Cub Scout Den Leader for the Boy Scouts. Bobby’s greatest enjoyment was time spent with her children and grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Bobby was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas C. Freeman; grandson, Clinton Freeman; and 2 sisters, Betty White Hurst and Louise W. “Sister” King.

Joseph Leonard Gattison
CHERAW - Joseph Leonard Gattison was born November 15, 1952, in Cheraw, to the late Joseph Gadson (Gattison), Sr. and the late Bernice Fair Mack Gadson (Gattison). Joseph Leonard was the baby son to this union, which included four other siblings, Lillian Ann, Lacoste, Theodore Roosevelt (who preceded him in death) and Jessie Lucille (whom also preceded him in death).

Joseph Leonard or his preferred name “J. Leonard” graduated from Long High School in 1970 and he was his class president. Being a devout learner and Christian, he furthered his education and received not only a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from South Carolina State University; J. Leonard earned a Master of Business Administration from The Atlanta University in 1977.

J. Leonard was employed at Savannah River Site until he resigned because of health concerns he believed were a direct result of a chemically contaminated work environment. He then secured a job as an Internal Auditor at his Alma Mater, South Carolina State University. At SCSU, J. Leonard worked diligently and generously within the SCSU community and even had a scholarship for deserving students in his honor despite working under many tyrannical supervisors. “His Faith in God, his trust in the Holy Word sustained him. God Bless you Gatt!!!” (former co-worker)

J. Leonard’s conscientious nature made him a person that felt that he never met a stranger and was willing to help anyone. He was highly respected and considered a hero within his municipality, Orangeburg. SC. J. Leonard was sought out by many within his community to help them with grievance problems with their bosses and was deemed as “…a fearless, Jack-legged attorney who wrote some scorching hot letters for his clients.”

Those left to mourn his death and cherish his memory are his eldest sister, Lillian Ann Gattison McPherson, Mt. Vernon, NY; his eldest brother, Lacoste (Yvonne R.) Gattison, Cheraw; three nephews, Kelvin (Tia) Rose, MD; Eric (Raimonda) McPherson, KY and Barrington Rose, MD; two nieces, Ariel M. Caggison, FL, Alisha M. Gattison, PA; along with two aunts, Christine Gattison Fountain, PA and Daisy Gattison Marshall, SC and a host of cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews and other family and friends.

Shirley ‘Toonie’ Williams Mesecher

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Mrs. Shirley “Toonie” Williams Mesecher, age 81, entered into rest on Monday, September 18, 2017. A private family graveside service will be held at New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Mesecher was born January 3, 1936 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late William Robert and Tot Ballard Davidson. Born and raised in Chesterfield, SC Toonie and her family moved to Greensboro, NC and lived there over 50 years. She was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church of Chesterfield. She enjoyed watching racing and football, but her favorite station to watch was the Weather Channel.

In addition to her parents, Toonie was also preceded in death by a sister of the heart, Ruby Smith.

Survivors include her son, Larry Mesecher of Greensboro, NC; daughter, Kim (Jim) Price of Matthews, NC; 2 grandchildren, Jim (Jennifer) Price, Jr. of Fort Mill, SC and Tara (C.J.) MacFarlane of Monroe, NC; 5 great-grandchildren, Killian, Jackson, Aidan, Cade, and Kyla.

CHESTERFIELD - Ms. Lela “Margaret” Mills, age 78, entered into rest on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at the home of her son. Funeral Services were held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, September 20, 2017, from the Chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home with burial following in the Oakland Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM Tuesday, September 19, 2017, at the funeral home.

Ms. Mills was born April 8, 1939 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Clyde Elbert and Nellie Rebecca Allen Melton. She was a former employee of Lynches River Fish Camp and a member of Oakland Baptist Church. Margaret enjoyed reading, cooking, and collecting cookbooks. She was a lady who loved everyone and will be missed by all.

In addition to her parents, Margaret was also preceded in death by 2 sisters, Mildred “Mickey” Montgomery and Loretta Sims; and by 1 brother, Curtis “Ray” Melton.

Donald J. ‘Donnie’ Webster

CHERAW - Mr. Donald J. “Donnie” Webster, age 73, entered into rest on Wednesday, September 20, 2017. A Celebration of Life Service was held at 3:00 PM Sunday, September 24, 2017 at Westfield Creek Baptist Church by Pastor Jason Pope, Pastor Doug Anderson, and Brent Taylor. Burial with full military honors by the S.C. Army National Guard followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
Mr. Webster was born February 19, 1944 in Patrick, SC a son of the late James Boyd and Effie Arlevia Sullivan Webster. He was a retired employee of CSX railroad with 27 years of service and a retired member of the S.C. Army National Guard with 23 years of service. A faithful member of Westfield Creek Baptist Church, Donnie served currently as Deacon, Cemetery Coordinator, building and grounds committee member, and was a former Sunday school teacher and member of the church choir and church coordinating committee. He was an active member in the BWZ Men’s Club and a member of the American Legion Post 74. Mr. Webster’s heart was helping others, from keeping the yards cut at church to helping anyone in need. His hobbies included hunting and fishing, but his most enjoyable times were spent being “PaPa Donnie” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be remembered as a selfless, humble man who always possessed a positive attitude.
In addition to his parents, Donnie was also preceded in death by 1 brother, James “Jimmy” Webster; sister-in-law, Joan H. Webster; niece, Cynthia Smith; and nephew, Franklin D. “Lil Frankie” Webster, Jr.

Susan Kay Barley Atkinson

CHERAW - Susan Kay Barley Atkinson, 71, died Friday, September 15, 2017. Born in Bloomington, IL, she was a daughter of the late Wilbur Edwin and Mary Elizabeth Hoover Barley. She was the widow of John O. Atkinson. She was a member of First Baptist Church Cheraw. She and her husband were retired retail business owners. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister who put everyone else before herself. Over the years she enjoyed staying connected with her Mineral Wells High School classmates.

Surviving are her sons, Bryan Steven Atkinson of Cheraw, SC, John E. “Eddie” (Jamie) Atkinson of Cheraw, SC, a daughter, Janice A. (Kip) Kiser of Chesterfield, SC, grandchildren Rachel Kiser, Graham Kiser, Madyson Scott, Kelsey Atkinson, Caleb Atkinson, and Kaitlyn Atkinson, a brother Lynn (Debbie) Barley of Mineral Wells, TX, sisters, Wilma (Bill) Powers of Weatherford, TX, Linda Archer of Mineral Wells, TX, Kathy Barley of Garland, TX, Cindy (David) Pitts of Mineral Wells, TX, Mary (Todd) Watts of Slaughterville, OK, Jan (DuWayne) Jacobson of Mineral Wells, TX. James Robert ‘Bobby’ Fowler Jr.

CHESTERFIELD - Mr. James Robert “Bobby” Fowler, Jr., age 66, entered into rest on Friday, September 8, 2017 at his home. A Celebration of Life Service was held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, September 13, 2017 from the Chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home by Hospice Chaplain Rev. Don Rhyne. The family greeted friends from 11:00AM – 1:00PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Fowler was born September 28, 1950 in Charlotte, NC a son of Jewell Blalock Fowler and the late James Robert Fowler, Sr. He was a retired employee with the City of Charlotte and was of the Methodist faith. Bobby enjoyed farming, drag-racing, hunting and running his hound dogs.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Fowler of the home; mother, Jewell B. Fowler of Charlotte, NC; brother, Ben (Sharen) Fowler of Asheville, NC; and sister, Kathy Peyton of Charlotte, NC.

CHESTERFIELD - Mae Frances Sellers Sikes, 89, died on Tuesday, September 6, 2017. Funeral services were held on Sunday, September 10, 2017 at 3PM from the Lamb of God Outreach Ministries, Chesterfield, SC. Burial followed in the Chesterfield Community Cemetery, Chesterfield, SC. She was born on April 9, 1928 in Dovesville, SC to the late Delphan Edwards and Frank Smith. Survivors: her children, Gloria Sellers McFarlan (Isaac Sr.), Roxanna Sykes both of Chesterfield, SC and Levern Sellers, New York City, NY; siblings Jesse Sellers, New York City, NY and Lillie Smith Hardison, Chesterfield, SC; 5 grandchildren, Isaac McFarlan, Jr. (Sonja), Ivan McFarlan Sr. (Allison), Tondrea Walls, Gala Dawn Sikes and Nim Sanjay; 9 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Services were rendered by Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield. .

Russell Martin Thomas, Sr.

WILDWOOD, Fla. - Russell Martin Thomas, Sr. of Wildwood passed away September 9, 2017. Mr. Thomas was born December 19, 1951 in Bennettsville, S.C. He worked for Crown Cork & Seal while living in S.C. and was a passionate Bass Fisherman exploring the local ponds in his John Boat. Russell moved to Florida in 1987 and worked for Harbor Hills Country Club as an Outside Supervisor. He loved to visit and feed his son’s horse, Dixie, and spend as much time as possible with her. Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Debbie; son, Russell Martin “Marty” Thomas, Jr and his wife, Janet, who felt like a daughter to him, brothers, Kenneth, Phillip, Steve and Richard; sister, Peggy and a special sister-in-law, Mattie. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth Tolson Thomas and Richard Maurice Thomas, Sr. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. To all his friends, please remember him as the joke telling happy person that he was. He loved all of you!

Donald Eugene Harvley

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. - Donald Eugene Harvley, 56, of Fernandina Beach passed away Saturday, August 26, 2017. He was the son of the late Furman O. and Iris Olivia Therrell Harvley; born in Cheraw, SC, Mr. Harvley spent much of his childhood in the Baldwin, FL area but later graduated from high school in Ringgold, GA.

After high school, Mr. Harvley proudly served his county in the United States Marine Corps. After the Marine Corps, Mr. Harvley began a career as a diesel truck service technician. He worked several years for Robert’s Diesel Service in Jacksonville and most recently worked for Tom Nehl Truck Co. for over 20 years. He was an ASE Certified Master Technician and his reputation as an expert was known by many throughout the Southeast.

He loved spending time with his wife and family, riding his motorcycle, deer hunting and fishing. However, he counted his relationship with Jesus Christ, as his Lord and Savior, as his most important relationship. He and his wife, Denese, were active members of Five Points Baptist Church in Fernandina Beach. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Moose Lodge.

He was predeceased in death by his parents and his daughter, Jessica Lee, whom he affectionately called “Baby Girl”. Mr. Harvley leaves behind his wife, Denese Branch Harvley, of Fernandina Beach; two sons, Jonathan Cole Harvley of Jacksonville, FL and SSgt. Aaron Klco, USMC, and his wife, Summer, of San Diego, CA; two daughters, Grace Moyer and her husband, Brian, of Eastlake, OH and Angela Klco of Kent, OH; his brothers and sisters, Furman Harvley and his wife, Rhonda, of Chesterfield, SC; Stephanie Gallups and her husband, Ronnie, of Baldwin, FL; Ronald Harvley of Jacksonville, FL; Karen Poitevint and her husband, Ashley, of Tallahassee, FL; Darren Scott and his wife, Lisa, of Anderson, SC; Teresa Pass of Deltona, FL and Kenny Scott, and his wife, Regina, of Knoxville, TN; as well as seven grandchildren.

Celebration of Mr. Harvley’s life was held Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 11:00 AM in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors with Pastor Frank Camarotti of Five Points Baptist Church officiating. The family received friends beginning at 10:00 AM. The U. S. Marine Corps rendered military honors as a part of the service.

WAXHAW, N.C. - Ever L. Massey, 76, died on Wednesday, August 23, 2017. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at 1PM from the Steele Hill A.M.E. Zion Church, Marshville, NC. Burial followed in the Church Cemetery. She was born May 14, 1921 in Lancaster County, SC to the late Elijaj and Frances Ross McKinney.
