Carlton Gene Walters

WALLACE - Carlton Gene Walters, 59, died Friday, November 17, 2017. Born in Marlboro County, he was a son of Eva Mae Haire Walters of Wallace and the late Francis Everette Walters. He was a member of White’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church, Wallace, SC. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and singing. He was a Pittsburg Steelers fan and was a talented musician.

Surviving is his wife Rose Walters of Wallace, SC, a son, Christopher Allen Walters of Wallace, SC, his mother listed above, brothers, William Walters of Bennettsville, SC, J.T. Haire of Marlboro County, SC, Michael DeHart of High Point, NC, Chuckie Lovett of High Point, NC, sisters, Sandra Gail Hall of Wallace, SC, Kathy Yvonne Walters of High Point, NC, Karen Lynn Spaul of High Point, NC, Tonya Michelle Sanchez of Wallace, SC, also several nieces and nephews.

The family received friends 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Monday, November 20, 2017 at White’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church, Wallace, SC.

A funeral service was held 2:00 PM, Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at White’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church, Wallace, SC. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Michael A. Valverde

Dr. Michael A. Valverde, MD, age 101, entered into rest on Saturday, November 18, 2017. Funeral Services were held at 2:00 PM Monday, November 20, 2017 at Douglas Mill Baptist Church by Rev. Wayne Burr with entombment to follow in the Douglas Mill Cemetery. The family greeted friends from 12:30 – 2:00 PM prior to the service at the church.

Dr. Valverde was born September 24, 1916 in San Juan, Ecuador, a son of the late Manuel and Domitila Arias Valverde. After moving to America, he founded the Valverde Clinic in 1963 and practiced family medicine until his retirement in 2015. He was a faithful member of Douglas Mill Baptist Church and enjoyed working and being outdoors, and spending time with his dogs.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Valverde was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Grace DeFeris Valverde; son, Mark Johnathan Valverde; and siblings, Afrayes Valverde, Eltavina Valverde, Flora Valverde, Grima Valverde, Pasteriza Valverde, Targelia Valverde, Octavio Valverde, and Elvteria Valverde.

Survivors include his children, Holly Angell of Mocksville, NC, Sandi V. (Wallace) McBride of Jefferson, SC, Toni (Tim) Bush of Columbia, SC, Nicole (Kevin) Hayes of Lake View, SC, Michael Douglas (Lisa) Valverde of Seven Lakes, NC; 8 grandchildren, Rebekkah (Alex) Todd, Amy (Scott Smith) Angell, Victoria (Richard Stewart) Angell, Wallace (Sara) McBride, Jr., Michael Arias (Anna) McBride, David (Maggie) Bush, Alex Bush, and Mikaela Grace Hayes; 6 great grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Chesterfield County Council on Aging, P.O. Box 45, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

Jerry H. ‘Joe’ Black

RUBY - Mr. Jerry H. “Joe” Black, age 74, entered into rest on Monday, November 6, 2017 at his home. Funeral Services were held at 12:00 PM Thursday, November 9, 2017 from the Chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home by Dr. Troy Rogers with burial following in the Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery. The family greeted friends from 11:00 – 12:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Johnny and Daphine Black, 471 Taylor Loop Rd., Ruby, SC.

Mr. Black was born May 10, 1943 in Chesterfield, SC a son of the late William Pete and Mammie Mae Joplin Black. He was a retired employee of Chesterfield Manufacturing and attended Cross Roads Baptist Church. A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Joe enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Black was also preceded in death by a brother, Hazel Ray Black; sisters, Elsie Black and Doris Melton.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Linda Price Black of the home; son, Johnny (Daphine) Black of Ruby, SC; grandson, Justin Black of the home; granddaughters, Ashley (Chris) Stancil of Ruby, SC, Kimberly (Thomas) Knight of Chesterfield, SC, and Samantha (Ben) Knight of Jefferson, SC; great grandchildren, Kaylin Knight, Trent Knight, Kameron Knight, August Stancil, Presley Stancil, and Jaxton Knight; also numerous nieces and nephews.

Bruce Carter Chewning

CHESTERFIELD - Mr. Bruce Carter Chewning, age 74, entered into rest on Saturday, November 4, 2017. Graveside Services were held at 11:00 AM Monday, November 6, 2017 at Thompson Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends immediately following the service at the cemetery and other times at the home, 1663 Angelus Road, Chesterfield, SC.

Mr. Chewning was born May 29, 1943 in Wadesboro, NC a son of the late Joe Hart Chewning and Kate Lewis Chewning. He was the retired owner of Chewning’s Construction and a member of Thompson Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Chewning was also a member of the S.C. Army National Guard with over 7 years of service. A true family man, Bruce had a passion for helping others. He enjoyed working in his garden and sharing his vegetables with friends and neighbors around the community. He was also an avid Nascar fan.

In addition to his parents, Bruce was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Tommy Chewning and Robert “Frosty” Chewning; sister, Betty Chewning Davis; and grandson, Stuart Rayfield.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Beverly S. Rayfield Chewning of the home; sons, Larry W. (Deborah) Rayfield, Randy (Donna) Rayfield, Ricky (Mary Ruth) Rayfield, Bruce (Leigh) Chewning all of Chesterfield, SC, Brian (Carrisa) Chewning of Versailles, KY; daughter, Deronda (Billy) Woodward of Chesterfield, SC; 15 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; brother, Glenn Chewning of Wadesboro, NC; also numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary Frances Cavender Crawley

RUBY - Mrs. Mary Frances Cavender Crawley, age 89, entered into rest on Tuesday, November 7, 2017. A Celebration of Life Service was held at 5:00 PM Friday, November 10, 2017 at Ruby Baptist Church by Pastor Ronald Thurman, Nathan Gardner, and Bessie Freeman. The family receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 PM Thursday, November 9, 2017 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Crawley was born March 2, 1928 in San Antonio, TX a daughter of the late Cecil Lloyd Cavender and Dorothy G. Phillips Cavender. She loved her family, her God, and her church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, WMU Director, VBS Director, Training Director, Librarian, and was honored as Church Woman of the Year in 1972. She loved cooking, gardening (both vegetable and flower), and in her later years she loved to color.

She took care of her family and worked as a Teacher’s Aide at Ruby Elementary for many years. “Miss Frances” loved all her children. After retirement, she became a caregiver and took care of several sweet ladies.

In addition to her parents, Frances was also preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Kenneth Crawley, Sr.; sons, William Lloyd Crawley, Edwin Kenneth “Kenny” Crawley, Jr.; granddaughter, Rebekah Anne Crawley; and infant sister, Dorothy May Cavender.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Jean C. Freeman of Ruby, SC; grandchildren, Bessie Freeman of Ruby, SC, Matthew K. Crawley, Michael P. (Brooke) Crawley, and Lindsay Crawley Lewis all of McBee, SC, Jena C. (Jimmy) Crowder of Cheraw, SC, and Billy (Taylor) Crawley of Nashville, TN; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Keith Crowder of Cheraw, SC, Mackenzie, Katlynn, Jacob and Laney Lewis all of McBee, SC, Bayleigh MaKenna Crawley of McBee, SC; brother, Cecil Lloyd (Kay) Cavender of Orem, Utah; daughters-in-law, Carol Crawley of Franklin, TN, Alice Ann Crawley of McBee, SC; sister-in-law, Sylvia Crawley of Atlanta, GA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the bands of McBee High School, 264 East Pine Ave., McBee, SC 29101. Frances supported generations of band members and attended all band functions as long as her health allowed.

Rosalyn Daniels Davis

BRONX, N.Y. - Rosalyn Daniels Davis, 91, died on Thursday, November 2, 2017. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at 10AM from the Flemming Funeral Chapel, Chesterfield, SC. Burial followed in the Chatham Hills Memorial Gardens, Inc. She was born in Orangeburg, SC to the late George W. Daniels and Dora Daniels. Rosalyn graduated from Spelman College, Atlanta, GA and Fordham University School of Pharmacy, New York, NY. Upon graduating from pharmacy school, she was hired by St. Luke’s Hospital. Survivors: Pamela E. Byass, Sherry L. Thornton and Jill Davis, all of Bronx, NY; two grandsons, Lorenzo R. Byass and Raynaude A. Byass both of Bronx, NY; two nephews, Maynard Bryant (Renee), Atlanta, GA and James Bryant, IIII Columbia, SC. Services were rendered by Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield. .

Anncy Delices

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - Anncy Delices, 60, died on Sunday, November 5, 2017. A memorial service was held on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 4PM from the Union Baptist Church, Society Hill, SC. She was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on November 30, 1956 to Feliciene Edroit Delices and the late Dieudonne Delices. Survivors: three sons, Steevenson F. Pierre, Cheraw, SC, Keef Steve Lauture Gervais and Joel Lauture Gervais, both of Port-au-Prince, Haiti; four daughters, Doris Delices, Farah Delices, Nora Lauture Gervais, all of Port-au-Prince, Haiti and Altegracia Oskeily Sanchez Perez, Havana, Cuba; her mother, Feliciene Edroit Delices, Port-au-Prince, Haiti; six grandchildren, and a great grandson. Mable J. Evans

CHERAW - Mrs. Mable J. Evans, age 84, entered into rest on Tuesday, November 7, 2017. Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Friday, November 10, 2017 from the Chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home by Pastor Dan Sullivan with burial following in the Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will greet friends from 12:00 – 1:30 PM Friday, prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Evans was born February 27, 1933 in Joanna, SC a daughter of the late Claude and Louise Duckett Johnson, Sr. She was a retired employee of Chesterfield County Public Schools and attended Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church. A beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Mable enjoyed gardening and had a special fondness for Irises.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Evans was also preceded in death by her husband, Herman O. Evans; beloved granddaughter, Anna Elizabeth Page; and numerous brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her children, Susan K. Evans, Oak Island, NC and Pamela D. Page (John), Gray, TN; grandchildren, Paul A. Wallace, IV (Renee), Hartsville, SC; Princeton E. Wallace (Stacey), Oak Island, NC; 5 great grandchildren; Brett Wallace, Reagan Wallace, Ryan Wallace, Gage Terry, and Jaxson Wallace.

Mrs. Leviner was born January 31, 1944 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Franklin and Geneva Hancock Donahue. She was a retired employee of Richmond Apparel and a member of Center Point of Life Baptist Church. Nellie enjoyed walking, shopping, camping and any activity involving time spent with her family.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Leviner was also preceded in death by 1 brother, Jerry Donahue; sister, Beatrice Donahue; and granddaughter, Cassie Lynn Shy.

Survivors include her husband of 34 years, Tony Leviner of the home; children, Rev. Wayne (Tammy) Burr of Chesterfield, SC, Regina Sizemore of Fayetteville, NC, Becky (Kevin) Pickrel, and April (Willie) Shy of Cheraw, SC, Ricky Leviner of Rockingham, NC, Terry (Ricky) Rushin, and Toni (Jerry) Wessinger both of Summerville, SC; 15 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Frances Teal of Wadesboro, NC, Frankie Clark of Dillon, SC, and Margaret Barrett of Franklinville, NC; also numerous nieces and nephews.

The family greeted friends from 1:00-2:00 PM prior to the service in the sanctuary of the church.

Mr. Lisenby was born March 10, 1947 in Chesterfield, SC a son of the late Robert Kimble Lisenby and Nelle Hancock Lisenby. He was a retired employee of General Tire and a member of Hopewell Baptist Church. Richard enjoyed building and spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Lisenby was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Steve and Roger Lisenby.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Betty F. Lisenby of the home; son, Ken Lisenby of Atlanta, GA; daughter, Hope (Myron) Chavis of Cheraw, SC; brothers, Andy (Janice) Lisenby of Chesterfield, SC and Greg (Sandra) Lisenby of Bennettsville, SC; sister, Sara Nelle Rivers of Singapore.

CHERAW - Mr. Glen Richard Sellers, age 72, entered into rest on Thursday, November 9, 2017, at his home. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, November 19, 2017, from the chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home at 4:00 p.m. by Rev. Ricky Morton, Jr. The family will greet friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Sellers was born on July 6, 1945, in Chesterfield, SC. He was a son of the late Lonnie Carson and Carrie Jane Hancock Sellers. He was a retired Environmental Operator Assistant with the Town of Cheraw. Glen was a true people person and always enjoyed talking with his friends and meeting new friends as well. He attended Windsor Park Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Sellers was also preceded in death by his 3 brothers, David, Gerald, and Lawson Sellers.

Survivors include his brother Billy (Mildred) Sellers of Cheraw, SC; 3 sisters, Mamie S. (Harold) Newton of Myrtle Beach, SC, Mary Katherine Meredith of Jamestown, NY, and Margie “Jean” (Len) Hart of Niangua, MO; sister-in-law, Neatus R. Sellers of Cheraw, SC; a number of nieces and nephews; and special friend Nancy Monnoyer of Cheraw, SC.

Zada Graham Gulledge Douglas

RUBY - Mrs. Zada Graham Gulledge Douglas, age 87, entered into rest on Friday, November 3, 2017. Funeral Services were held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at Ruby Baptist Church by Pastor Ronald Thurman and Rev. Randy Bishop with burial following in the Ruby Cemetery. The family received friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Monday, November 6, 2017 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Douglas was born December 17, 1929 in Ft. Mill, SC a daughter of the late Lewis Alexander Graham, Sr. and Effie Catherine Kirby Graham. A graduate of Fort Mill High School and Winthrop University, “Miss Zada” as she was affectionately known united in marriage to Carroll Newsom Gulledge on June 24, 1950 and began her teaching career that same year which spanned over 42 years. She taught at Cheraw Academy and Chesterfield Elementary School before returning to her “home school” Ruby Elementary where she retired in 1992. Following Mr. Gulledge’s death, Zada united in marriage to Gary Evans Douglas, Jr. and they enjoyed 25 years of marriage until his passing in 2008. Mrs. Douglas was a member of Chesterfield Baptist Church and a former member of Ruby Baptist Church where she served as church organist and pianist for over 30 years.

In addition to her parents and husbands, Zada was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Zada Catherine Riggins; brothers, Lewis Alexander Graham, Jr., and Donald Reese Graham; niece, Dianne Graham; nephews, Carroll Eugene Davis and Michael Dewey Davis.

Survivors include her daughter, Carol Ann Gulledge of Cheraw, SC; sisters-in-law, Amelia Carolyn “Tootie” Graham of Fort Mill, SC, Loretta Burch of Charlotte, NC, and Naomi White Gulledge of Macon, GA; nephews, Lewis Alexander (Phyllis) Graham, III of Fort Mill, SC, Donald Reese (Celeste) Graham, Jr.; 4 nieces, Catherine Graham (Mark) Stewart of Simpsonville, SC, Robyn Gulledge (Steve) Magyar of Concord, NC, Lisa Ann Gulledge (Dr. Fred) Gaton of Macon, GA, Denise Gulledge White of Macon, GA; 6 great nieces, 9 great nephews, 4 great – great nieces, and 7 great – great nephews; and her beloved feline companion, “Sir Shade Gulledge.”
