WOODRUFF - Andrew Steven (Steve) Mayfield, 63, of 104 Monique Lane, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, at his home after a year long battle with cancer. A native of Greer, he was the son of the late Andrew Nichols and Mary Hill Mayfield. He was the husband of Marlene Nix Mayfield of the home, and was first married to the late Libby Mayfield.
He was employed by Springs Industries in Lyman for 44 years, and was a member of Green Street Baptist Church of Spartanburg where he was chairman of the Deacons and a member of the Veterans Sunday School Class. He was a participant in the American Cancer Society Relay for life for the past seven years.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Mark Mayfield and his wife Lisa of Rock Hill and Kevin Mayfield and his wife Candace of Boiling Springs; five grandchildren, Lauren and Luke Mayfield of Rock Hill, and Caleb, Sarah, and Madelyne Mayfield of Boiling Springs; his step-mother, Mae Mayfield of Waslla, Alaska; his step-sister, Mary Lou Randall of Waslla, Alaska; and two beloved pets, Honey and Onit Mayfield of the home. He was predeceased by a daughter, Tracy Mayfield; and by a sister, Jane Mayfield. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Green Street Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Thomas Moore, the Rev. Sam Hammett, and the Rev. Virgil Turner. Burial will be in Westwood Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Green Street Baptist Church, 446 Brawley Street, Spartanburg, S.C. 29303. The family is at the home. Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel has charge of arrangements.
Jeannette Balkum Reilly
ALEXANDRIA, Va.- Jeannette Balkum Reilly, 27, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, at Georgetown University Hospital after a battle with cancer. Born Sept. 26, 1976, she attended St. Raphael's Grammar School in Trenton and Northern Burlington High School in Columbus. Jeannette received her bachelor's degree from American University in 1998 where she founded The Young Republi-can's Club.
It was at American that she met her husband, Matthew. They were married in July 2001. A dedicated public servant, she served as an Honor Cadet in the Civil Air Patrol while in high school. She spent three years working for Congressman Chris Smith (R) in high school and college and was a researcher for the Republican National Committee.
From April 2001 until her death Jen was director of research for the Office of Speech writing at the White House where she was described by President George W. Bush as the finest researcher ever to serve in the White House. Jeannette was a member of St. Rita's Catholic Church in Alexandria, Va., where she taught catechism. She was a daughter of the late Frank J. Balkum.
Surviving in addition to her husband, Matthew J. Reilly are her mother Bernadette Haskins Balkum of Jacobs-town; her siblings, Teri Balkum of Santa Rosa, Calif., Lori and her husband Doug Taplow of Tampa, Fla., Lisa Balkum of Jacobstown, Susan Balkum of Mount Holly, Sandra Balkum, Frank and wife Anne Balkum of Tampa, Fla., Rosemary and husband Rick Buchwalter of Clearwater, Fla., William and wife Kim Balkum of Union; nieces Elizabeth Buchwalter and Jessica Balkum and nephews, Matthew Balkum and William and Ethan Balkum. Funeral services were held in Alexandria, Va., on Dec. 10.
Willie N. Burgess
LOCKHART - Willie Norris Burgess, 75, husband of Eva Jane Cabaniss Burgess, of 160 Woodside Dr., Lockhart, died Dec. 20, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a long illness. Mr. Burgess was born in Union on July 22, 1927, a son of the late Frank Humphries Burgess and Josephine Fowler Burgess. He was retired from the textile industry and was a veteran of World War II, having served with U.S. Navy Sea Bees. He attended Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are one son and daughter-in-law, Don and Sharon Burgess of Union; one sister, Lena Board of Union; two grandsons, Richard Burgess and James Norris Burgess both of Union. Funeral services will be held today at 3 p.m. at Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church by the Rev. Richard Conyers and Rev. Russell Miles.
Burial will be in New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery in Chester County. Nephews will serve as active pallbearers. The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday night from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. today to await the hour of service.
Memorials may be made to Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church, Lockhart, S.C. 29364. The family is at the home, 160 Woodside Dr., Lockhart, S.C. 29364. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
James Falls Deal
LOCKHART - Mr. James (Smoky) Falls Deal, 79, of South Fourth Street, Lockhart, died Dec. 22, 2002, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness. Mr. Deal was born in Cowpens on Nov. 27, 1923, a son of the late Jim Deal and Hazel Davis Deal Cookson. He was a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II. He was a member of Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving are six sisters, Faye Miller, Betty Tice and Gayle Turner, all of Lockhart; Irene Rash and La Vadar Gaston of Chester and Hazel Fowler of Jonesville; a brother, Harold (Bud) Cookson of Union; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Deal was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Deal and a brother, Talmadge Deal.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 this afternoon at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by Rev. Ben Hill. Burial was in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers were Jimmy Deal, Allen Warren, Jay Garner, Brian Fowler, Bruce Miller and Lonnie Melton. The following were asked to assemble at the Holcombe Chapel at 1:15 p.m. today to form the honorary escort: Freddie and Lelia Shirley (special friends), Red Walker, Pat Justus, Carolyn Palmer, Dr. Robert M. Wentz and staff, the staff of Hope Hospital, Jim Crocker and Larry Crocker.
The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday night from 7-9. Memorials may be made to the Lockhart Cemetery Fund, c/o Alex C. Chiders, Lockhart, S.C. 29364. The family is at the home of his sister, Betty Tice, 117 South Sixth Street, Lockhart. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Gladys L. Holcombe
SPARTANBURG - Gladys Louise Holcombe, of 105 Hidden Valley Rd., Spartanburg, died Dec. 22, 2002, at White Oak Manor. A native of Union County, she was the daughter of the late Charles Humphrey and Lula Bailey Holcombe. She was a graduate of Appalachian State University and received her master's degree jointly from USC, UNC and Converse College. She was a retired teacher, having taught in N.C. and S.C. and completing her career in Spartanburg School District 2. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Survivors include her sister, Dorothy H. Sellars of the home and several cousins. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1-2 p.m. at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Mausoleum Chapel. The family is at the home. Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel has charge of arrangements.
Cheryle C. McIntyre
Cheryle Chevalier McIntyre, 48, of 494 Happy Valley Road, formerly of Gaffney, died Dec. 20, 2002 at her home. Mrs. McIntyre was born in Rhineback, N.Y. on Aug. 18, 1954, a daughter of Thomas Chevalier Sr. and Elizabeth Newcomer Marion. She was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving in addition to her parents are her husband, Bobby McIntyre Sr., of the home; two daughters and their husbands, Jennifer McIntyre McFalls and Timothy McFalls of Union, Kellie McIntyre Sutherland Richardson and Justun Richardson of Union; a son and his wife, Bobby McIntyre, Jr., and Susan McIntyre of Gaffney; two sisters, Billie Jo Plyer of Gray Court and Betty of Detroit; a brother, Thomas Chevalier Jr. of Gaffney; 12 grandchildren, Kristen McIntyre, Daniel McFalls, Karen McFalls, Matthew Sutherland, Karley McIntyre, Jordan McIntyre, Justin Sutherland, Hannah McIntyre, Dean (Tiny) Frazier, Brandon Fraizer, Jordan Sutherland and Jousha Sutherland.
Mrs. McIntyre was predeceased by a son, David Shannon McIntyre. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. this afternoon at Union Memorial Gardens by Rev. Henry Gyton. Active pallbearers were: Philip Lindsey, Dean Peeler, Doug Horchler, Tony Byers, Tinker Byers and Michael Horton. The family received friends at the funeral home from 1:45 until 2:45 today prior to the graveside services. The family is at the home, 494 Happy Valley Road. Arrangements were by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Jeannette W. Mixon
Jeannette Walters Mixon, 67, of 218 Belvue Drive, widow of William Harrison Mixon, died Dec. 19, 202, at 4:09 p.m. in Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster from injuries received in an automobile accident. Mrs. Mixon was born in Walterboro on March 22, 1935, a daughter of the late Rance and Grace Parnell Walters. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Union and the Joy Sunday School Class. Mrs. Mixon was a graduate of Coker College and was retired from Paragon Plastics, Inc.
Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Jennie Lynn and Tommy F. Knox II and Regina Dare Mixon all of Union; three sisters, Leatha Tedder of Johnsonville, Mary Grace Carson of Walterboro and Betty Eaddy of Kingstree; and four brothers, Carl Robertson and Horace Robertson both of Walterboro, Richard McInnis of Johnsonville and Jerome Brown of Sumter; a very special aunt, Evelyn Parnell of Johnsonville.
Mrs. Mixon was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Eaddy and Dora Bair. Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Clay Howerton. Graveside services will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Magnolia Cemetery in Hartsville. The family received friends Saturday from 6-8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, S.C. Affiliate, 2711 Middleburg Drive, Suite 311, Columbia, S.C. 29204. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Roy F. Palmer
Mr. Roy Foster Palmer, 55, husband of Donna O'Shields Palmer of 1007 East Main Street, died Dec. 22, 2002 at 1:30 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mr. Palmer was born in Union on April 27, 1947, a son of the late Woodrow W. (Buck) Palmer and Dorothy Duncan Palmer. He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and a former member of the Spartanburg City Fire Department. Mr. Palmer was a veteran of the US Army and was formerly employed with Michelin Tire Co.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Stuart Palmer and Matthew Palmer, both of the home; a brother, Robert Palmer of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Alan Quarles. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Rick Duckett, Roger Aker, Alonzo Briggs, Clarence McCraw, Steve Horne, Bob Humphries, Stanley Eaves and Jim Woods. The following are asked to assemble at the church Tuesday at 12:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Patrick McNease, James McNease, Rodney McNease and Todd Palmer.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 and will be placed in the church at noon Tuesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 1007 East Main Street. Memorials may be made to the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Building Fund, 373 Wesley Chapel Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Anthony W. Brannon II
Anthony Wayne Brannon II, 18 of 338 Sleepy Hollow Lane, Union, Lockhart Community, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, in the Pediatric Hematology Oncology Unit of Greenville General Hospital after an extended illness. Anthony was born in Union on March 11, 1985, a son of Wayne and Lori Bentley Brannon of the home. He was a member of Philippi Baptist Church and a member of the 2002-2003 graduating class of Lockhart High School.
Surviving in addition to his parents are a sister and brother-in-law, Carrie Ann and Jeffery Sanders of Buffalo; two nephews, Ben Sanders and Anthony Nolan-Reid Sanders, both of Buffalo; his maternal grandparents, Dean and Cora Bentley of Lockhart; and his paternal grandmother, Shirley D. Brannon of Union. He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Sonny Brannon. Also surviving are a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Brad Goodale, the Rev. Ben McLaughlin and the Rev. Richard Conyers. Burial will be in Lockhart Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Russ Bentley, Randall Burns, Paul Poulin, Jeremy Gault, Ricky Farr and Charlie Conrad. Members of the 2002-2003 graduating class of Lockhart High School are asked to assemble at the church Wednesday at 12:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort.
After 5 p.m. today the body will be at the home where the family will receive friends tonight and will be placed in the church at 12 noon Wednesday to await the hour of service. Memorials may be made to the Anthony Brannon Memorial Fund at Greenville Memorial Hospital Pediatric Hematology Oncology Unit 5-F, 701 Grove Road, Greenville, S.C. 29605. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
