Robert L. ‘Nubby’ Davis
RUBY - Robert L. "Nubby" Davis, of Ruby, SC, died January 19, 2018 after years of declining health. He was 72.
Robert was born and raised in Chesterfield, SC, the son of Albert T. Davis Sr. and Ora Mae Adams Davis (both deceased). He is survived by brothers Albert T Davis Jr., of Hickory, NC, and Johnny A. Davis, of Chesterfield; and by two nephews and two nieces.
According to his brother Albert, Robert was a lovable, frustrating, opinionated man, a free spirit who insisted on doing things his way. He began smoking at age 5. He dropped out of high school (but earned his GED in the Navy). He was stationed in Japan and worked as a Morse code operator.
In the 1960’s he set type for The State newspaper, in Columbia, SC. He often babysat his niece Trilby and seemingly enjoyed Sesame Street as much as she did. He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and was confident enough to use a ballpoint.
Probably the two most important things in his adult life were his cats and politics. He was a passionate political junky of the progressive persuasion, with in-depth knowledge about the issues. And he delighted in debating those issues, seldom if ever conceding.
Cats held an exalted status in his house. In his last year, his cats Lucky and Oona were a reason he refused to consider living in a nursing home.
Robert had many friends, but none more caring and steadfast than Delores Brigman, who helped him through difficult times, especially in his demanding, final years. She was essentially a member of his family. Delores has found a forever home for Lucky. Oona’s adoptive parents are hoping to keep her, but are waiting to see if early signs of a possible cat allergy disappear.
In the ledger of Robert’s life, the happier days will be most vividly remembered. That is the Nubby who is and will be so missed.
