CLEMSON — Bessie Mell Poats Lane of Clemson died Friday, April 12, 2002, at her home.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home.
Elrod, Marvin E.
TOCCOA, Ga. — Marvin E. Elrod, 76, of Toccoa and Ellijay died Friday, April 12, 2002, in Marietta.
Born in Stephens County, he had lived most of his life in Atlanta. After his wife’s death he resided between Ellijay and Toccoa. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran, owned and operated Elrod Alignment for many years and retired from Sears.
Surviving are daughters, Diane Coleman of Ellijay and Judy Kiefaber of Monroe; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was the widower of Lutrell Lewallen Elrod and the son of the late Jim Elrod and Annie Mae Nix Dowdy.
Services are at 11 a.m. Monday at Nails Creek Baptist Church; burial will be in the church cemetery. The body is at Whitlock Mortuary, where the family will receive friends from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
The family suggests memorials be made to Eagle Ranch, P.O. Box 7200, Chestnut Mountain, Ga. 30502.
Williams, Hugh Alex
TOCCOA, Ga. — Hugh Alex Williams, 85, of 312 Valley Road died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Born in Franklin County, he had lived most of his life in Stephens County. He was retired from Coats & Clark with 43 years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Jess Hayes Sunday school class and the Masonic Lodge No. 309.
Surviving are daughter, Patricia W. Davis of Bogart; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; brothers, Robert H. Williams of Westport, Wash., and Thomas H. Williams and Edward L. Williams, both of Dallas; and a sister, Charelene W. Hagin of Macon.
He was the widower of Kathleen Wilson Williams and the son of the late Thomas Watson and Elizbeth Bennett Williams.
Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Toccoa First Baptist Church by the Revs. Byron Kennerly and Art Conway; burial will be in Stephens Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Whitlock Mortuary.
The family will be at the home.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Masonic Children’s Home, P.O. Box 4083, Macon, Ga. 31208.
Simpson, Tecora
Tecora Simpson, 102, of 510 Smith St., Anderson, died Sunday, April 7, 2002, at Anderson Area Medical Center.
Born in Anderson, she had lived in Philadelphia until she retired and returned to Anderson in 1966. She was a member of Thompson Centennial United Methodist Church, where she served as a choir member. and a member of the Untied Methodist Women. She was an active participant at the Anderson County Senior Center on Tolly Street for more than 30 years. As a centenarian, she was honored and recognized by Mayor Richard Shirley and the city of Anderson with a key to the city. She also received other recognition from Gov. Jim Hodges and Rachel Hodges, and former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Joey Preston, County Administrator, and the Anderson County Council most recently honored her with a resolution and County Medallion for her 101st birthday.
She was the daughter of the late Robert Warren and Pearlie Cunningham Simpson. She was preceded in death by three brothers and six sisters. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Thompson Centennial United Methodist Church by the Revs. Booker T. Whetstone and Anthony Waymeyers. The family will receive friends from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Unity Mortuary.
The family will be at the home of her niece, Olivia Humphrey, 509 Southwood St., Anderson.
Shook, Kevin
WESTMINSTER — Kevin Tremain Shook, 40, of 365 Cedar Lane Road died Wednesday, April 10, 2002.
Born in Oconee County, he was an employee of McCulla Mechanical of Charleston and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Persian Gulf War, and he attended Victory Tabernacle Church.
Surviving are son, Kevin Tremain Whitman of Westminster; parents, Billy Ray and Carolyn Deal Shook of Westminster; brother, Tim Shook of Seneca; and sisters, Kristy McElroy and Connie Marshall, both of Westminster.
Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Victory Tabernacle Church; burial will be in Heritage Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Davenport Funeral Home. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
The family will be at the home his parents, 361Cedar Lane Road, Westminster.

Michael Lavarus Putman, 21, of Lawrence Road, Anderson, died Thursday, April 11, 2002.

TOCCOA, Ga. — Charles Anthony “Tony” Payne, 44, of 116 Henrietta St. died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at his home.

Kelley, Sandra Louise
Sandra Louise Kelley, 59, of 112-A Virginia Circle, Anderson, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at Anderson Area Medical Center.
Born in Anderson County, she was a secretary and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are son, Jason Reese Herring of Anderson; daughter, Patricia Ann Phillips of Anderson; brother, H.T. “Pete” Steadman of Anderson; sister, Eloise Tucker of Greenville; and eight grandchildren.
She was the widow of Olin David Kelley and the daughter of the late John Ware and Payore Steadman Ware. She was preceded in death by a sister, Cora Bell Alexander.
Graveside services are at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Iva City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday at Woodlawn Funeral Home.
The family will be at the home of her son, Jason Herring, 112-A Virginia Circle in Anderson.
Henderson, H D
CHESNEE — H D Henderson, 79, of 5181 Chesnee Highway died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Helathcare Center.
Born in Spartanburg County, he was the retired owner of Henderson Ford. He was a member of the Chesnee First Baptist Church for more than 40 years. He served as a deacon and was a member of the choir and the Scott Jolley Sunday school class.
Surviving are widow, Avilda Ezell Henderson; daughters, Dianne Winkler of Anderson, Deborah Wallace of Columbus, N.C., and Dawn Henderson of Chesnee; sisters, Julia Sevenhuysen of Hendersonville and Fannie Allen of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; brothers, Hollis and Harold Henderson, both of Chesnee; and six grandchildren.
He was the son of the late John B. and Mamie Simmons Henderson. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Emma Willingham and Lizzie Hughey.
Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Chesnee First Baptist Church by Dr. Herbert Garrett and Dr. Troy Gregg; burial will be in Springhill Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Eggers Funeral Home, Chesnee.

Ansel Greenway
HAYESVILLE, Ga. — Ansel Greenway, 74, of Lick Log Ridge died Monday, April 8, 2002, in Gainesville.
Born in Elbert County, he was a graduate of Rock Branch High School in Elberton and Georgia State College in Atlanta. He was a member of the Atlanta Athletic Club and the Sharp Memorial United Methodist Church in Young Harris, where he served on the Admission Board. He was retired from Peachtree Doors and Windows, where he was vice president and controller.
Surviving are widow, Fay Seawright Greenway of the home; daughter, Debbie Hill of Suwanee; son, Robert Greenway of Washington; mother, Ruby Cash Greenway of the home; sisters, Virginia Szymanczyk of Eugene, Ore., Anne Ward of Elberton and Norma Hunt of Sanford, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
He was the son of the late Melvin Greenway.
Memorial services are at 11 a.m. Friday from Sharp Memorial United Methodist Church in Young Harris, with the Rev. Patty Ryles-Clay and the Rev. Dr. Charles Wilson officiating.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Sharp Memorial United Methodist building fund or the Methodist Childrens Home.

CALHOUN FALLS — Willie Mae “Did” Belcher, 78, of 217 Seneca Circle died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at her home.
Born in Calhoun Falls, she retired in 1985 from Burlington Industries, Calhoun Falls. She was a member of Glovers AME Church, Calhoun Falls.
Surviving are daughters, Robbie Cade, Paula Emursier, Kathryn Belcher and Earline Belcher, all of Calhoun Falls and Shannon Johnson of Orangeburg; sisters, Sallie Mae Wilson and Rosa Dalson, both of Calhoun Falls; brothers, Mayes Postell Jr. and Frank Postell, both of Philadelphia, and Clyde Postell and Robert Postell, both of Calhoun Falls; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Friendly Funeral Home.

Jolly, Lawrence H.
PENDLETON — Lawrence Henry Jolly, 82, of 2801 Lebanon Road died Sunday, March 31, 2002, at Anderson Area Medical Center.
Born in the Lebanon community of Anderson County, he was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II. He was a retired employee of Roger Mullikin Company. He was a life member of the VFW, and a member of the DAV and Barnett Masonic Lodge. He was a lifetime member of Lebanon Baptist Church.
Surviving are widow, Una Geraldine Polk Jolly of the home; daughters, Dianna Wade of Bushnell, Fla., and Joy James of Anderson; son, Manson Jolly of Anderson; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was the son of the late Manson S. and Eula Kay Jolly. He was preceded in death by a brother, John Louie Jolly.
Graveside services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lebanon Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Marion Mitchell officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel.
The family is at the residence.
