CAYCE - Graveside services for Boyce Odell Walker, 90, of Cayce, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Elmwood Cemetery. Mr. Walker, widower of Mattie King Walker, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003. Born in Spartanburg, he was a son of the late James O. and Nellie Burnett Walker.
Surviving are his sister, Louise Senechal of California; two nephews, James Atchison and Joe Atchison, both of California; a cousin, Patsy Allen of Union; sisters-in-law, Mildred Swindler, Sylvia Senn, Adell King and Miriam King, all of West Columbia. Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia is handling arrangements.
Helping others at Christmas Union County Rescue Squad members Brian Farr, Eric Lawson and Marcus Beard help Santa Claus (Robert Martin) load toys (above) for the Make a Child Smile at Christmas drive. 18-month-old Kinsley Waddell of Bobby Faucette Road (right) won the drawing for the stocking full of toys. The squad also helped sponsor a 6-year-old child and her mother with help from DSS and others.
Louise N. Mitchell
Louise Nicholas Mitchell, 93, of 400 Foster St., Union, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Born in Union County to the late Wallace W. and Nell Giles Nicholas on Sept. 16, 1909, she was a member of Bethel AME Church. Mrs. Mitchell was a graduate of S. C. State University and a retired librarian.
Surviving are four cousins, Candace Nicholas of Union, Robert T. Nicholas of Charlotte, (Ret.) Col. Cyrus L. Williams of Waterford, CT and Louis McDuffie Williams of New York City. Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 30, 2002 at 1 p. m. at Bethel AME Church conducted by Rev. Eartha Bowman.
Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. Viewing will be Sunday from 11 a. m.-7 p. m. and on Monday from 9 a. m.-11 a. m. The Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Christopher A. Prince
JONESVILLE - Christopher Aaron Prince, 42, of 116 Webber St., Jonesville, husband of Sharon Jill Craig Prince, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at 1:26 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mr. Prince was born in Union on April 5, 1960, a son of Joanne Prince Jones of Union and the late James A. Abrams. He was a Baptist and was formerly employed with Action Builders of Spartanburg.
Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a daughter, Heather Garner of Jonesville; a son, Neil Bailey of Rock Hill; his stepfather, Ray Jones of Union; his stepmother, Irene Abrams of Buffalo; two sisters, Laurie Abrams of Jonesville and Kristi Lawter of Union; four stepsisters, Deannie Byars of Newberry, Sybil Smith, Vickie Gregory and Nicki Guy, all of Union; a stepbrother, Terry Jones of Union and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel in Union conducted by the Rev. Randy Smith. Burial will be in the Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Joey McNeace, John Inman, Jeffrey Littlejohn, Robbie Littlejohn, Chris Garner and Edward Garner.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9. The family is at the home, 116 Webber St., Jonesville, and at the home of his mother, Joanne Jones, 528 Peach Orchard Road, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Herman H. Smith
PAULINE - Herman Hicks Smith, 71, husband of Frances Davis Smith of 6100 Highway 56, Pauline, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at 5:05 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.
Mr. Smith was born in Union County on April 16, 1931, a son of the late Englesby Thomas Smith and Laura Lawson Smith. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. Mr. Smith was a Mason, a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in the U.S. Army, and was formerly employed with Eagle Construction Co.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Richard Harris of Pauline; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Cheryl Smith of Roebuck and Ralph and Donna Smith of Enoree; two sisters, Anna Rollo of Enoree and Phoebe Vaughn of Martinez, Ga.; and five grandchildren, Curt Smith, Kevin Smith, Josh Smith, Ryan Smith and Dustin Harris.
Funeral services will be held 3 p. m. Sunday at the South Spartanburg Baptist Church in Pauline conducted by the Rev. Shannon Faulkner. Burial with military honors will be in the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be: Ralph Smith, Stanley Smith, Mark Smith, Jimmy Vietch, Wayne Vietch, Jason Sprinkle, George Reynolds and Larry Atchley. The body will remain at the funeral home and will be placed in church at 2 p. m. Sunday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Richard Harris, 6098 Highway 56, Pauline.
The family will receive friends at Friendship Baptist Church on Sunday immediately following the graveside service. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Sue W. Fendley
Sue Frances Whitney Fendley, 84, of 3809 Whitmire Highway, Union, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. A native of Union County, she was the wife of Furman Lester Fendley and the only daughter of the late Fred H. and Lois Tinsley Whitney. She was a member of Hebron Baptist Church where she served in many capacities.
She graduated from Anderson Jr. College and received an AB degree in sociology from Winthrop University. She taught school in Seneca and Fayetteville, N.C. before moving home to Union where she taught for over 25 years. She was a great conservationist. She served as past president of the Union County Conservation Auxiliary and was named The Outstanding Conservtion District Auxiliary Member in the Nation, which is the highest award given to the auxiliary.
After retirement, she traveled extensively as a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Conservation Districts including a 30-day excursion to China where she studied the conservation practices of China. Surviving in addition to her husband are two nephews of Union, William English Whitney Jr. and James F.B. Whitney, 5 great nieces and 2 great nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Hebron Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. David Toney and the Rev. Jerry Ford. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be William English Whitney Jr., James F.B. Whitney, Johnny Harris, Douglas Fendley, James Brown and C.B. Jolly. Members of the Bertha Gregory Sunday School Class of Hebron Baptist Church are asked to sit in a group.
The body will remain at the funeral home and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 3809 Whitmire Highway, and will receive friends at the church Tuesday immediately following the funeral service. Memorials may be made to the Hebron Baptist Church Building/Music Fund, 143 Hebron Church Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home is serving the Fendley family.
Lake C. Giles
Lake Copeland Giles, 86, of 725 Pea Ridge Highway, Kelton, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. She was born Nov. 12, 1917, a daughter of the late Jim and Buelah Copeland. Granny Lake, as she was affectionately known, was a homemaker and a member of New Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Surviving are 10 children, Myrtle Gertrude Goode and the Rev. Sandra (John) McBeth, both of Union; James (Mildred) Giles, Jean (Nathaniel) Dogan, Shirley (Herbert) Goode, all of Jonesville; Dorothy Nygongang and Ruthie (Bradford) Giles-Holland, both of Charlotte, N.C. Emily (George) Land of Carlisle; Roosevelt (Sharon) Giles of Atlanta, Ga., and Mary Walkins of Simpsonville; an adopted son, Exzavia Giles of Jonesville; three brothers, James Copeland of Asheville; Jack Copeland of Greenville and Hudson Copeland of Union; 20 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at New Emmanuel Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wake services will be held from 7 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Gibson & Brown Funeral Home. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Sybil G. Jolly
Sybil Louise Gwinn Jolly, 84, wife of Joseph C. Jolly of 467 Sardis Road, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at 6:15 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Jolly was born in Laurens on March 30, 1919, a daughter of the late Perry and Alma Bragg Gwinn. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Mrs. Jolly was a graduate of Laurens High School and was retired from Excel Hosiery Mill.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph Stanley and Rita Jolly of Union; and three grandchildren, Amy Lee Jolly of Columbia, Joseph Stanton Jolly and Kimberly Dawn Jolly, both of Union. Mrs. Jolly was predeceased by two sisters, Sarah Garner and Margaret Prince.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. today at the Sardis United Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Roger Plemmons. The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday night. The family is at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Stan and Rita Jolly, 457 Sardis Road. Memorials may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church, 915 S. Pinckney St., Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home served the Jolly family.
Nettie Hulon Maika
Nettie Hulon Maika, 90, of Union, widow of Anthony M. Maika, died Dec. 30, 2002, at 7:45 a.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home after an extended illness. Mrs. Maika was born in Columbia on Dec. 15, 1912, a daughter of the late Rufus Armstead Hulon and Bernice Green Hulon. She was a Methodist. Mrs. Maika was previously married to the late James M. Sanders and the late Edgar Lee Roes.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. J.E. (Beatrice) Fore and Mrs. Lou H. Ward Smith, both of Union; a brother, Joseph B. Hulon of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. The family is at the home of her sister, Lou H. Ward Smith, 309 Lakeside Drive. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
William G. Vinson
William George (Billy) Vinson, 70, of 106 Cottage Ave. died Dec. 29, 2002, at 12:20 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Vinson was born in Union on Aug. 12, 1932, a son of the late George Perrin Vinson and Ruby Penland Vinson Ingle. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the U.S. Army and was formerly employed with Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing Plant.
Surviving are a daughter, Pamela Vinson Johnson of Greenwood; a granddaughter, Jennifer N. Johnson of North Carolina; two half-sisters, Georgia Burnette and Diane McCall, both of Charlotte; a half-brother, Wilbur Perrin (Sonny) Vinson of Charlotte and a special friend, Paul M. Kicidis of Union.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Wayne Cooke. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Randy Penland, Mike Southard, Rev. George Leagens, Wilbur Perrin (Sonny) Vinson and Jimmy Lawson.
The following are asked to assemble at the funeral chapel Tuesday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Paul M. Kicidis, William Sherbert, Dr. Thomas Young, Dr. Joseph Camunas and Charlie Vinson. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Tuesday from 1 until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
