She was born April 12, 1912, in Calhoun County, the fourth of 11 children born to the late Daniel Spigner and Lula Stokes Spigner. She was educated in local schools and was graduated from South Carolina State. She often reminisced about washing out her dress every night, ironing it the next morning while “Popp A” hitched up the wagon to take her to State College. When classes were over for the day, there he was waiting to take her home. Her father, with little education, was determined his children would be educated.

Having relocated in the early 1930s to Stamford, Conn., she was a long and faithful member of Union Baptist Church. She loved singing in the choir. She was also a club woman. She served as president of the Yerwood Woman’s Club and was proud of their annual tea party held every year at Jackie Robinson’s poolside compliments of Mrs. Rachel Robinson in North Stamford. A member of the Victory “12, ” etc., she was also a small business owner for many years.

In 1964, she married Walter Stockham (now deceased) of New York City. She helped him raise his five children to adulthood, Sloane Hasbrock of Stamford, Conn. (deceased), Joel Stockham of Atlanta, Robin Adams of North Carolina, Betty Jo Conway of Stamford, Conn., and Tracey Stockham of New York City.

In 1989, she married David C. Mintz. They relocated to Orangeburg and remained until his death in 1999. She was spirited away to North Carolina where she remained until being admitted to Wake-Carey Medical Center. There she went home to the Lord. The journey we all have to make. For her it is done. She is resting in peace.
