Lake C. Giles
Homemaker

Lake Copeland Giles, 86, of 725 Pea Ridge Highway, Kelton, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. She was born Nov. 12, 1917, a daughter of the late Jim and Buelah Copeland. Granny Lake, as she was affectionately known, was a homemaker and a member of New Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Surviving are 10 children, Myrtle Gertrude Goode and the Rev. Sandra (John) McBeth, both of Union; James (Mildred) Giles, Jean (Nathaniel) Dogan, Shirley (Herbert) Goode, all of Jonesville; Dorothy Nygongang and Ruthie (Bradford) Giles-Holland, both of Charlotte, N.C. Emily (George) Land of Carlisle; Roosevelt (Sharon) Giles of Atlanta, Ga., and Mary Walkins of Simpsonville; an adopted son, Exzavia Giles of Jonesville; three brothers, James Copeland of Asheville; Jack Copeland of Greenville and Hudson Copeland of Union; 20 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at New Emmanuel Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wake services will be held from 7 until 8 tonight at the Gibson & Brown Funeral Home. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Iva Mae Hewitt
Retired from KMart stores

Iva Mae Durkee Hewitt, 69, wife of Walter S. Hewitt, of 124 Gully Road, died Dec. 30, 2002, at 7:38 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. Mrs. Hewitt was born in Waterbury Center, Vermont on Jan. 4, 1933, a daughter of the late Oscar Wesley Durkee and Beatrice Belk Wrisley Durkee. She was a member of Padgett's Creek Baptist Church and was a retired Cafeteria Manager with K-Mart Stores.

Surviving in addition to her husband are four daughters, Judy Brown of Greer, Peggy Van Lew of Castleton, Vermont; Sally Adams of Rockwell, N.C.; and Doreen Bushey of Castleton, Vermont; three sons, Fred Barlow of South Deerfield, Mass.; Wesley Barlow of Granville, N.Y.; and Rod Hewitt of Cross Keys; two sisters, Phyllis White of Bomoseen, Vermont; and Mary Amerio of Waterbury, Vermont; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Padgett's Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronald Humes. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family is at the home, 124 Gully Road, Union. Memorials may be made to Padgett's Creek Baptist Church, c/o Emma Fincher, 172 Fincher Road, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Nettie Hulon Maika
Columbia native

Nettie Hulon Maika, 90, of Union, widow of Anthony M. Maika, died Dec. 30, 2002, at 7:45 a.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home after an extended illness. Mrs. Maika was born in Columbia on Dec. 15, 1912, a daughter of the late Rufus Armstead Hulon and Bernice Green Hulon. She was a Methodist. Mrs. Maika was previously married to the late James M. Sanders and the late Edgar Lee Roes.

Surviving are: two sisters, Mrs. J.E. (Beatrice) Fore and Mrs. Lou H. Ward Smith, both of Union; a brother, Joseph B. Hulon of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Union Memorial Gardens by the Rev. E. Armand Shealy.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30. The family is at the home of her sister, Lou H. Ward Smith, 309 Lakeside Drive. Memorials may be made to Hospice of South Carolina, 432B North Duncan By-Pass, Union, or to the Augsburg Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 366, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Robert Lee Thomas

Robert Lee Thomas, 81, of 193 Thomas Ranch Road, died Dec. 29, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Carolina Mortuary.

Noah Benfield
World War II veteran

MORGANTON, N.C. - Noah (Gan) Jacob Benfield, 83, of NC 181 North, Morganton, N.C., died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at Grace Hospital following a period of declining health. He was born May 17, 1920, in Burke Co., N.C., and was the son of the late Jake Benfield and Mattie Whisenant Benfield.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters. Mr. Benfield was a long time member of Zion Baptist Church where he served on various committees, and as an usher for many years. Mr. Benfield was a devoted family man, and an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II where he served in Italy. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Whisenant Benfield of the home; sons, J.C. Benfield and his wife, Juanita, of Union, and Warren Benfield and his wife, Linda, of Morganton; grandchildren, Julie Fowler and Jeff Benfield, both of Union and Jennifer Carlisle of Morganton, great grandchildren, Blake Fowler and Jake Benfield, both of Union and Sydney Carlisle of Morganton; four sisters; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Ralph May and the Rev. Jimmy Lambert officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 1 until 3 p.m. at the church. At other times, the family will be at the residence, 2927 Hwy 181 N., Morganton. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 500 E. Morehead St., Suite 211, Charlotte, N.C., 28202, or to Zion Baptist Church, 3396 Pea Ridge Road, Morganton, N.C. 28655. The Sossoman Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mary M. Farr
Union county native

Mary M. Farr, 83, of 102 Tilman St., Union, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Born in Union County, March 24, 1920, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary Jennings Farr. Surviving are two special nieces, Mary Wood and Ida Mae Farr and several other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Gibson & Brown Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery. Public viewing will be on Friday, from 8:30 a.m. until the hour of service. Gibson & Brown Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

Gwendolyn D. Padgett
Former model and cosmetologist

CARLISLE - Gwendolyn Louise DeHart Padgett, 60, of 219 Westwood Drive, Carlisle, widow of William E. (Bill) Padgett, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003 at 12:15 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. Mrs. Padgett was born in Columbia on June 12, 1943, a daughter of the late L.J. DeHart Sr. and Alberta Traylor DeHart. She was a graduate of Chester High School and attend the University of South Carolina-Union. She was a former model and cosmetologist. Mrs. Padgett was a member of the Unitarian faith.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Daniel Scott and Annette Padgett of Gulfport, Miss., a granddaughter, Sydney Danielle Padgett of Gulfport, Miss.; three sisters, Marie D. Sanders of Santuc, Lee Ona D. Blair of Columbia and Sara Jane D. Fowler of Union; and three brothers, L.J. DeHart Jr. of Lexington, John Wayne DeHart of Carlisle and William Henry DeHart of Union. Mrs. Padgett was predeceased by a brother, Richard M. DeHart. The family is at the home of her brother, John Wayne DeHart, 4409 King Kennedy Street, Highway 215, Carlisle. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Gene Garner
Navy retiree

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - Gene Edward Garner Sr., 74, of Sevierville, Tenn., husband of Mady Garner, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at his home after a year-long battle with cancer. He was retired U. S. Navy and a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, USS Leyte (CV-32) Association, and the USS Greenwich Bay AVP 41 Association.

He was preceded in death by his son, Gene E. Garner Jr., parents, John R. and Gladys G. Garner and brother, C. Bruce Garner. Surviving in addition to his wife are:a son and daughter-in-law, Marc and Tina Conter of Fairfield, Ohio; two daughters, K.C. Conter of Sevierville and Gladys Prouty of Lynn, Mass.; grandchildren, Alex Conter of Fairfield, Ohio, Shawn, Shannon, and Tonya Prouty of Lynn Mass.; a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Louise Garner of Union; a sister-in-law, Jewel Garner of Prosperity; aunts, Connie Garner and Vi OĠDell of Union; a sister-in-law and husband, Rhonda and Rick Wessels of Cincinnati, Ohio; three brother-in-laws and wives, Steve and Becky Miller of Ocklawaha, Fla., Stan and Cathy Miller of Madison, Ala., and Brian Rand of Florence, Ky.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with services conducted by Marc Conter and K.C. Conter. Interment will follow in Boyd's Creek Cemetery with military honors provided. The family will receive friends noon until 2 pm. Saturday at Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville, Tenn.

Kathleen K. Quinn
Union native

Kathleen Trammell King Quinn, 82, of 3580 East Kesler Lane, Gilbert, Ariz., wife of Lee Quinn, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at 10 p.m. in Banner Hospice of Arizona after several years of declining health. Mrs. Quinn was first married to the late Lawrence Y. King. She was born in Union on May 1, 1921, a daughter of the late Gary and Mattie Davis Trammell. Mrs. Quinn was a Baptist.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Donna Scarbrough of Gilbert, Ariz., and Connie Wilson of Union; three sisters, Janice Fowler and Joyce Palmer, both of Jonesville and Maggie Howell of Union; two brothers, Gary Trammell Jr. of Cross Anchor and Francis Trammell of Jonesville; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Quinn was predeceased by a daughter, Gloria Harris, a sister, Mary T. Brewington and two brothers, Thomas (Bud) Trammell and Richard Trammell. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Trinity Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Neil Kiesler and Ricky Wayne Harris. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Dennis Howell, Gerald Howell, Danny Howell, Terry Howell, James Ray (Curly) Harris and Lawrence Carl (Peanut) Harris.

After 5 p.m. today the body will be at the home of her daughter, Connie Wilson, 203 N. Boyce St., Union where the family will receive friends and will be placed in church at 2 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Geraldine G. Brauning
Union County native

MANASSAS, Va. - Gerry Garner Brauning of Manassas and formerly of Union County, died Dec. 20, 2002, after a sudden illness. She was born Sept. 3, 1933 in Union County, a daughter of the late Clearman Garner and Nellie Catherine Garner. She was a graduate of Kelly Pinckney High School in Kelton and a graduate of North Greenville Community College. She was the widow of Carl Brauning Jr. of Manassas.

Surviving are: three daughters, Rebecca (Becky) Roberts of Union; Jennifer (Jenne) Warf of Nokesville, Va. and Nancy Brauning of Manassas. She is also survived by her grandchildren, JROTC Ltc. Jonathan (Jon) Roberts of Union; Jacqueline Roberts of Greenville and Carl Warf of Nokesville, Va.; a sister, Vivian Polk of Walterboro; a brother, C.W. Garner of Union; a half-sister, Joyce Murphy of Gaffney and a half-brother, Layton Garner of Union.She will be buried next to her husband in Quantico Military Cemetery in Quantico, Va Friday.

Jeanie V. Garner

GREENVILLE - Mary Lougenia (Jeanie) Vinson Garner, 82, of 28 Wonderwood Drive, Greenville, died Dec. 23, 2002, at St. Francis Hospital. Mrs. Garner was born in Union, a daughter of the late William Thomas and Annie Bell Sumner Vinson and was known as (Bug) to her family.

She was a homemaker and a member of White Oak Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Robert Lacey Garner of 65 years; two sons, Dr. Robert Thomas Garner of Greenville and Steve Garner of Taylors; daughters-in-law, Susan Collins Garner of Clemson and Gale Kimball Garner of Taylors; four grandchildren, Courtney G. Urich, Caroline G. DeLorenzo, Patrick L. and R. Thomas Garner; six great-grandchildren, Ally, Will, Jay and Anna Urich, Thomas, Derek and Alex DeLorenzo; and two sisters, Dorothy V. Wetherington of Atlanta, Ga. and Miriam V. Woodward of Union.

Funeral services were held today at 1:30 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown, with visitation from 12:30 p.m. until 1:15 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The family is at their respective homes. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to United Ministries Heating Assistance Program, 600 Pendleton Street, Greenville, S.C. 29601.
