Mrs. Ruth Fairey Godfrey -- Branchville

Saturday, November 18, 2006

Funeral services for Mrs. Ruth Fairey Godfrey, 86, of Branchville, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006 at Branchville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Grady Corder and Rev. Mike Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Ott Cemetery in Branchville.

The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.

Mrs. Godfrey died Thursday, Nov. 16.

She was born in Lexington, a daughter of the late E. Nipson Fairey, and Annie Taylor Fairey. She worked at the Methodist Oaks for over 25 years as a dietitian. Mrs. Godfrey was a life-long member of Branchville United Methodist Church. She was the widow of Arthur C. Godfrey.

Survivors include one son, Edward A. Godfrey of Nashville Tenn.; two daughters, Amelia Aiken and husband Jim of Charleston, and Deborah Godfrey of Columbia.; three sisters, Vera Thomas of Goldsboro N.C., Maxine Weaver of Sumter, and Betty Rhoad of Branchville; one sister-in-law, Barbara Stokes of Branchville; one granddaughter, Annie Aiken Goldman of Savannah Ga., and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 5 to 7 P.M. at the Ott Funeral Home in Branchville. Memorials may be made to your local SPCA.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude for all of the prayers and support they have received over the past three years.

Mrs. Eva L. White, HOLLY HILL

Funeral services for Mrs. Eva L. White, 79, of 304 Thornburg St., Holly Hill, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006, at Unity AME Church in Holly Hill, with the Rev. Julius Steed officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. White died Thursday, Nov. 16, at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

She was born July 22, 1927, in Orangeburg County, a daughter of the late Samuel (Ticky) White Sr. and the late Etta Masheck Brown. She was reared in Orangeburg County and attended the public schools there. At an early age, she joined the Greater Unity AME Church and was a member of the Stewardess Board 1. She was the widow of the late Mr. Edgefield “Sleepy” White.

She leaves to cherish her memories, two daughters, Ms. Minnie Victoria Johnson of the home and Ms. Etta Lou Mumford of Philadelphia, Pa.; one son, Mr. Lucious White of Huntsville, Ala.; five sisters, Ms. Mattie Mae Thompson, Ms. Beatrice Jenkins, Ms. Theresa Davis and Ms. Carrie Lee Zeigler, all of Holly Hill, and Ms. Bertha Shuler of Santee; three brothers, Mr. Calvin (Fleet) White Sr. of Santee, Mr. James (Much) White and Mr. George White, both of Holly Hill; one brother-in-law, Mr. Wilson Keitt of Santee; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and a host of other relatives and friends.

Friends may call at the residence and at Eutawville Community Funeral Home of Eutawville.

Charlie Clay Odom Sr. -- Denmark

Funeral services for Charlie Clay Odom Sr., 82, of 2326 Church Ave., Denmark, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, 2006, at Capernaum Baptist Church, Denmark. Burial will be in the Old Capernaum Cemetery.

Mr. Odom died Monday, Nov. 13, at Bamberg County Hospital.

He was born March 26, 1924 in Bamberg County to the late Elijah and Lessie Banks Odom. He attended the public schools of Bamberg County. At a young age he joined Capernaum Baptist Church. In 1942, he married the former Ruth Hutto who predeceased him. To this union 10 children were born. Charlie was a talented and well known carpenter.

Survivors include five daughters, Emma Ruth Middleton, of Ravenel, Eleanor O. Posey, of Atlanta, Henrietta Thomas, of Union, Miriam Young, of Summerville, Frances Grant, of Warner Robins, Ga.; four sons, Charlie Clay Odom Jr., Calvin Odom and Elijah Odom, all of Denmark and John Odom, of Barnwell; one sister, Ellen Odom Steward, of New Orleans; 24 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the home of his son, Charlie Clay Odom Jr., 77 James Wright St., Denmark.

The Denmark Chapel of Carroll Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Mack D. Bowman, ORANGEBURG

Mack D. Bowman, 46, of 109 Beverly Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006, at The Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Glover's Funeral Home.

Friends may call at the residence of Althea Bowman, 1385 Penn Road, Orangeburg and the funeral home.

David Eugene Bolen -- ORANGEBURG

Monday, November 20, 2006

David Eugene Bolen, 75, of Vance, died Saturday, Nov.18, 2006, at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, at the First Baptist Church in Eutawville, with the Rev. Mike Thompson and the Rev. Steve Crosby officiating. Burial will follow in the Eutawville Cemetery.

Mr. Bolen was born in Barnwell County, a son of the late Tracy Bolen and Esther Mae Birt Bolen. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War and a retired truck driver. He was a member and Deacon of First Baptist Church of Eutawville. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son, Terry Lee Bolen, one sister, five brothers, and son-in-law, Mike Wright.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Winningham Bolen of the home; daughters, Sandra (Herman) Grice of Eufaula, Ala., Theresa (Vernon) Weeks of Holly Hill, and Brenda Wright of Vance; sons, Leonard (Judy) Bolen of Holly Hill, Bradford (Julie) Bolen of Anderson and Michael A. Bolen of Lexington; brothers, Emory Bolen of Portal, Ga., Oneal Bolen of Ellabell, Ga., Melbrin Bolen of Bloomingdale, Ga., Rudy Bolen of Bowman and George Bolen of Gastonia, N.C.; sisters, Virlee Richardson of Williston and Virginia Suite of Savannah, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and many loved nephews and nieces.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, at Avinger Funeral Home of Holly Hill.

Mrs. ElloreeWood Campbell -- Cope

Funeral services for Mrs. Elloree Wood Campbell of Cope will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006, at Bethel Baptist Church near Norway. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Thompson Funeral Home Inc. in Orangeburg.

Harry L. Johnson, RIDGELAND

Mr. Harry L. Johnson, 55, of Ridgeland, formerly of Denmark, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006, at Trident Hospital after a brief illness.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Johnson-Dash Funeral Home.

Friends may call at the residence of his brother, Freddie (Wilma) Johnson, 12281 Heritage Highway, Bamberg, and the funeral home.

Rev. J. Murray Breland, Jr.

HOLLY HILL – Rev. Jacob Murray Breland, Jr., 88, of Holly Hill, husband of Ellen Knott Breland, died Saturday, January 12, 2008 at his residence.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Harleyville with Rev. Terry Hiers officiating. Burial will follow in the Holly Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Thomas Breland, Coleman Breland, David Breland, Walter Dantzler, Jim Russell, and Jerry Gardner.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of The American Legion Post 128, Harleyville.

Rev. Breland was born September 22, 1919 in Holly Hill, a son of the late Jacob Murray Breland and Mary Welch Breland. He was a graduate of Holly Hill High School and an Army veteran of World War II. He was an active member of The American Legion Post 128, Harleyville, and an active member of First Baptist Church in Harleyville.

He served the Lord and his community in various capacities as a former Sunday School Director, Teacher and Deacon of the First Baptist Church in Holly Hill, and as a Boy Scout Leader for many years. Rev. Breland was a retired Southern Baptist Minister, retired rural mail carrier for the US Post Service, and retired owner of Breland’s Small Engine Service. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Christie, and two sisters, Miriam Hildreth of Oak Ridge, TN and Betty Dantzler of Holly Hill.

Surviving are his wife of the home; are two sons, Neil (Barbara) Breland of North Augusta, and Harvey (Roxanne) Breland of Greenville; a daughter, Elaine Breland of Wilmington, DE; six step-children, Jason Allen of Orangeburg, Stephanie Helmick of Columbia, Barbara Siau of Fayetteville, NC, Marie Jackson, Sandra Mills, and Wanda Jackson all of Summerville; two brothers, Dr. Arthur Breece (Joyce) Breland of Charlotte, NC and Glen Marion (Carolyn) Breland of Lancaster; a sister, Vernon B. “Punky” Russell of Holly Hill; and six grandchildren, Marshal Breece, Rollins, Jessica and Sabre Breland, Sherry Freeman, and Ellen Breland.

Friends may call at Avinger Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. this Monday evening.

Charles V. “Bim” Smith

HOLLY HILL – Charles Virgil “Bim” Smith, 79, of Holly Hill, died Monday, January 7, 2008 at his home.

Funeral services will be 2 o’clock Thursday at Avinger Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Buddy Locke and Rev. Andy Burk officiating. Burial will follow in the Holly Hill Cemetery.

A native of Holly Hill, Mr. Smith was a son of the late Tommy Hampton Smith and Eliza Stoudemire Smith. He was a graduate of Holly Hill High School, an Army veteran of the Korean War, and a retired farmer. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class.

Surviving are his wife, Sylvia Collier Smith of the home; a daughter, Susan S. Carnes of Holly Hill; a son, Dennis (Cindy) Smith of Murrells Inlet; a sister, Reba Caparella of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a brother, Jerry D. (Margaret) Smith of Holly Hill; and grandsons, David (Laura Ashley) Carnes of Mount Pleasant and Greg and Grant Smith of Murrells Inlet.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. this Wednesday at the funeral home.
