Kathleen Elizabeth Preston
March 26, 1950 ~ September 23, 2016 (age 66)

RIDGEVILLE - Kathleen Elizabeth Preston, 66, passed away Friday, September 23, 2016 in a Charleston hospital.

A graveside service will be 4 p.m. this Sunday afternoon in the Holly Hill Cemetery.

Kathleen was a daughter of the late Donald and Alzina Preston and was retired from the SC Dept. of Corrections. She was preceded in death by a sister, Deborah Ann Preston.

Surviving are a niece, Deidra Hansell of Summerville; and four great-nephews.

Malcolm "Dutch" Brogdon
September 14, 1927 ~ September 14, 2016 (age 89)

EUTAWVILLE - Malcolm E. “Dutch” Brogdon, 89, of Eutawville, widower of Edna Huggins Brogdon, died Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at his home.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Avinger Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Greg Gadson officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Harleyville Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. this Saturday at the funeral home.

Dutch was born in Dillon, SC, a son of the late David Shep Brogdon and Iola Bain Brogdon. He was retired from the US Navy and the Charleston Naval Shipyard. Dutch was a member of Holly Hill United Methodist Church.

Surviving are daughters, Brenda Westerberg of Eutawville, Rena (John) Pieniadz of Harleyville, and Kathy (Bill) Parenti of Seabrook, TX; a son, Bubba (Karen) Brogdon of Rock Hill; grandchildren, Stephanie Harrelson, Andy Westerberg, Sarah Hagen, Michelle Carter, Matthew Parenti, Alyssa Lynn, Brayden Brogdon, and Madison Cherry; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association South Carolina, 4124 Clemson Blvd., Suite L, Anderson, SC 29621.

Ronald Jerome Heatley
September 12, 1960 ~ November 12, 2016 (age 56)

SANTEE – Ronald Jerome Heatley, 56, of Santee, widower of Celestia Inabinet Heatley, passed away Saturday, November 12, 2016 at his home after a brief illness.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at the graveside in Jerusalem United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Barry Allen officiating

Ronald was born in Orangeburg, a son of Nancy Spires Heatley and the late Jerome Milton Heatley. He was retired from the Albemarle Corporation in Orangeburg, and he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Surviving are his mother, Nancy L. (William “JR”) Heatley of Santee; daughter, Heather Heatley of Santee; son, Wayne (Marquita) Heatley of Santee; mother-in-law, Reva Inabinet of Elloree; and two grandchildren, J'Naia Asbury and Jakala Heatley.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this Monday at Avinger Funeral Home in Holly Hill.

Helen Jean Latulippe
October 30, 1938 ~ November 20, 2016 (age 78)

SANTEE – Helen Jean Latulippe, 78, of Santee, wife of Joseph Latulippe, passed away Sunday, November 20, 2016 in a Charleston hospital.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, November 26, 2016 at the Historic Church of the Epiphany in Eutawville with Rev. Tom Hendrickson officiating. Burial will follow in the churchyard.

Mrs. Latulippe was born in Iowa City, Iowa, a daughter of the late Archie Gaskey and Adah Path Gaskey. She was a member of the Historic Church of the Epiphany, and a retired secretary from the Federal Government.

Surviving are husband of Santee; a son, Larry Snyder of Dallas, TX; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Historic Church of the Epiphany, PO Box 9, Eutawville, SC 29048.

Jesse Milton Smith
August 2, 1928 ~ December 3, 2016 (age 88)

EUTAWVILLE – Jessie Milton Smith, 88, of Eutawville, first married to the late Arlene S. Smith, and the widower of Maedell B. Smith, passed away Saturday, December 3, 2016 at his home.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at AVINGER FUNERAL HOME in Holly Hill. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Plantation Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Jesse was born in Tylertown, Miss. a son of the late Jacob Milton Smith an Era Bell Magee Smith. "Papaw" as he was known to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren proudly retired from the Navy (a veteran of Korea and Vietnam Wars) and Naval shipyard. He loved telling stories and we all loved listening to them. We all have our own memories, but we grandchildren share the ones of summer sausage, cheese curds, bluegrass music, western movies, and his love. As most know, Papaw lived on Lake Marion. It will always be Papaw's Lake to his beloved family. It won't be the same without him. It will always be Home with the memories and love he left behind.

Surviving are daughters, Sara Silva, Terri Whitson and Jo Jernigan, all of Moncks Corner; sons, George Silva, Jack Roach, and Mavon Jernigan; step-children, Roger, Dennis, Bett, and Faye; sister, Margaret Payne of Violet, La.; brother, Jerrel Smith of Byram, Miss.; grandchildren, Jodie (Rik) Basye, Justin (Kari) Whitson, Jessie (Robbie) Legette, Jordan Jernigan, Cody Jernigan and Kaitlyn (Tad) Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Kasey Piland, Kaydence Whitson, Jade Legette, Laine Whitson, Savanna Basye, Matthew Legette, Marcus Basye, Delcie Chase, and Aaron Chase.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Jeannette "Puddin" Clark-Carmichael (Murray)
October 8, 1931 ~ December 8, 2016 (age 85)

Jeannette “Puddin” Clark-Carmichael, 85, died December 8, 2016 at Carillon Assisted Living in Fuquay Varina, NC. She was born October 3, 1931 in Holly Hill, SC.

A Memorial service will be held at Corinth Baptist Church, 1910 Camden Rd, Vance, SC at 3:00 on Sunday, December 11, 2016. The family will receive friends after the service in the church fellowship hall.

Puddin was educated in the Holly Hill, SC school system and enjoyed life on the family farm. She was predeceased by all of her siblings: Edna (Bill) Murray White, Emily (Gurney) Brown, William (Bydrie) Marvin Murray, Jr., George (Edith) Murray, Hugo Murray, Cal (Alberta) Murray, Rut (Dotsie) Murray, Joe (Mary Jane) Murray, and Carolyn (D.P.) Murray Shuler.

Of her siblings, three brothers served in the military: George Marion, Joseph Irvin, and Charles Rutledge. Charles Rutledge was a POW in World War II.

Puddin married Walter A. Clark, Sr. on January 5, 1950 in a double wedding ceremony with her sister Carolyn and D.P. Shuler.

She was a homemaker and farming partner as well as an active member of Corinth Baptist Church in Vance, SC for many years participating in the Adult Choir and Bible School. She was a writer for the Holly Hill Observer Newspaper and a member of a couple’s Bridge Club. She became Postmaster in Vance, SC in 1974. She later became the Postmaster in Santee, SC and was name the Olin D. Johnston Award winner in 1983. In recognition of the achievements in Community activities and citizenship as the outstanding Postmaster of the Year selected by the SC Chapter of the National Association of Postmasters of the US.

Mrs. Clark was predeceased by her husband, Walter in 1973. She was remarried in 2004 to George Carmichael of Evans, Georgia.

Mrs. Clark had two sons, Walter A. Clark, Jr. and Richard Hugo Clark. She was predeceased by her son, Walter in 2010. She supported him through his trials and illness until his early death.

Surviving Mrs. Clark is her son, Richard Hugo (Jan) Clark with three grandchildren, David Richard (Shelly) Clark, Rebekah (Craig) Dalton, Laura (Chris) Vorac and six great- grandchildren.

She is also survived by her son Walter’s family, daughter-in-law Donna Clark, grandchildren Kevin (Jamie) Clark, Martin (Jessica) Clark, and Ashley Clark and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Corinth Baptist Church, PO Box 69, Vance, SC 29163.

Jane Wiggins Driggers (Peagler)
September 15, 1932 ~ November 23, 2016 (age 84)

HOLLY HILL – Janie Peagler Wiggins Driggers, 84, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at Hospice Center of Charleston in Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Sandridge First Baptist Church with Rev. Owen Hill officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church before the service from 1 to 2 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Peagler, Bobby Peagler, Aaron Peagler, Billy Peagler, Mike Peagler, and Johnny Watkins.

Janie was born in Eutawville, a daughter of the late Charlie Peagler and Linda Lou Binnicker Peagler. She worked at the former Farmers Milling Co.in Holly Hill. A member of St. Johns Bethel Baptist Church, Moncks Corner, Janie was first married to the late Delmon Wiggins, and was the widow of Elias Driggers.

Surviving are daughters, Carolyn (Gerald) Infinger and Cathy Winningham, both of Harleyville, Patty (Sammy) Grooms of Holly Hill, and Debbie (John) Adkins of Eutawville; sons, Hayward (Marlo) Wiggins of Goose Creek and Johnny (Doris Ann) Wiggins of Holly Hill; a sister, Linda (John) Clark of Eutawville; brothers, Horace (Rose) Peagler of Eutawville, and Charles (Teresa) Peagler of West Virginia; 13 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Sandridge First Baptist Church, 4677 State Road, Ridgeville, SC 29472.

Leerie Thomas (Chesnutt)
March 16, 1918 ~ November 20, 2016 (age 98)

SANTEE – Leerie Chesnutt Thomas, 97, of Santee, passed away Sunday, November 20, 2016 at her daughter’s home in Santee.

A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Free Will Baptist Church with Pastor Pete Minor officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.

Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at Concord Cemetery in Ludowici, GA.

Leerie was born in Ludowici, GA, a daughter of the late James Seymore Chesnutt and Nancy Emily McClamb. She was a retired seamstress and she enjoyed making afghans for her family.

Surviving are daughters, Mary (Garland) Smith of Ludowici, and Margaret (Bill) Davis of Santee; nine grandchildren; and a number of great and great-great grandchildren.
