Friday, December 08, 2006
Funeral services for Edith Clarice Brabham O’Neal, 93, of Columbus, Ga., were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006, at St. Luke United Methodist Church, Columbus. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, in Denmark Cemetery, Denmark.
Mrs. O’Neal died Sunday, Dec. 3, in Columbus after a brief illness.
Mrs. O’Neal, the daughter of Angus McKay Brabham and Edith Rice Brabham, was born at her family home in Bamberg on Jan. 31, 1913. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Emmett O’Neal, who died Feb. 17, 2004.
Known as Clarice to family and friends, she lived in Bamberg through her graduation from Bamberg High School in 1930. She represented the community twice as Miss Bamberg in Augusta and Denmark. She attended Duke University and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1934, where she was president of the Beta Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi. She loved returning to South Carolina to stay at her family home in Bamberg, to visit the Carolina beaches and to attend family reunions at Mizpah United Methodist Church in Buford’s Bridge, where her ancestors attended church.
In 1939, she met and married Bob O’Neal, who was working with the Social Security Administration in Florence. His assignments with the government took them to Macon, Waycross and Jacksonville, Fla. In 1945, Bob was named manager of the Columbus Social Security Office. Mrs. O’Neal was a teacher in Gentain, Morningside and Rigdon Road elementary schools after beginning her career with Muscogee County School District as librarian at 45th Street Elementary. She took great pride in teaching and often said the most rewarding period of her career was during the interesting years when Muscogee County’s schools were first integrated.
For more than 60 years the O’Neals were members of St. Luke United Methodist Church, where she was an active member of Circle Six and the W.H. Shaw Sunday School Class. For many years, she delivered meals to shut-ins through St. Luke’s H.E.L.P. Program.
She was a champion of women’s equality and in 1996 was honored as an Honorary Lifetime Member in the American Association of University Women for her 50-year commitment to the advancement of education and equity for women and girls.
Her interests were many and varied, and it was part of her nature to want to share those interests with others. As a result, she was among the founders of the Columbus Audubon Society and the Columbus Genealogical Society. She was an early supporter of Historic Columbus, the Columbus Art Museum, and the Christian Fellowship Association, and she was actively involved in the Boxwood Garden Club, the Huguenot Society and the Oglethorpe Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
In her spare time, she loved to read poetry and to keep up with current events. She took pride in being a lifelong learner and her favorite was the English language. Practically every room in her home contained a dictionary with a magnifying glass nearby. She was noted for her remarkable memory for events, people and relationships. From her childhood, she loved to dance and after to moving to Columbus in 1945, she and Bob – along with other members of the Shaw class – organized the Mr. and Mrs. Club, a dance club that has continued for more than 50 years.
Survivors include her daughters, Mary Carlton O’Neal Lull of Berkeley, Calif., and Nancy Clarice O’Neal Campbell and her husband, Stephen G. Campbell, of Denver; her sister, Mary Cecile Brabham McEachern of West Columba; two grandsons, Christopher Robert Carlton Lull and Peter Martin Cole Lull; a great-grandson, Taylor Cole Lull; a niece, Sally McEachern Mings of Columbia; and five nephews, Richard McEachern, Dr. Angus McKay (Mickey) Brabham III of Columbia; Carlton O’Neal and Sutton O’Neal of Huntsville, Ala., and Grantland O’Neal of Raleigh.
Memorials may be made to St. Luke H.E.L.P. Program, PO Box 867, Columbus, Ga. 31902; the Open Door Community House, 23405 Second Ave., Columbus, Ga. 31901; and the AAUW Educational Foundation or the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund, 1111 Sixteenth St., NW, Washington, DC 20036.
