Homer Lee Starnes
Decorated WWII veteran
EARL, N.C. – Homer Lee Starnes, 90, of 204 Rosemont Dr., died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, in Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.
A native of Cleveland County, N.C., he was the son of the late Robert Jackson and Dora Lee Warren Starnes. He and his wife, Frances Hackney Starnes, had been married for 63 years.
Mr. Starnes was a decorated veteran of World War II. He was a First Sergeant in the U.S. Army Infantry and served in the Normandy invasion and in Northern France and Central Europe. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and European Theater Ribbon with 5 Battle Stars. He retired from United Van Lines, Martin Transfer and Storage co., Charlotte.
He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and was a member of Bridgeport Masonic Lodge No. 543 and the No. 3 Ruritan Club. He was a deacon emeritus and Sunday School teacher at New Hope Baptist Church.
Mr. Starnes was preceded in death by five brothers, Marvin, Earl, Fred, Ray and Warren Starnes; and two sisters, Ann Puett and Katherine Starnes.
Surviving are a daughter, Virginia "Jen" Beatty and husband, Marvin, of Suffolk, Va.; a brother, "R.J." Starnes and wife, Betty, of Valdese, N.C.; three grandchildren, Marvin Beatty IV and wife, Melisa, of Charlotte, N.C., Virginia Lee Beatty of Virginia Beach, Va., and Heather Beatty Doyle and husband, Tom, of Nags Head, N.C.
Services will be held today at 3 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church conducted by the Revs. David Gordon, Latt Beshears and Broadus Heatherly. Burial will be in Buffalo Baptist Church Cemetery, Blacksburg.
The family will receive friends today from 2-3 p.m. in the church fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hope Center Building Fund, New Hope Baptist Church, P.O. Box 116, Earl, N.C., 28038.

Hacksaw McCraw
Construction worker
SHELBY – Forrest Edward "Hacksaw" McCraw, 58, of 420 Davis Rd., died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, in Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cherokee County, he the husband of Diane Wilson McCraw and son of the late Forrest Brown McCraw and the late Jeannette Lester McCraw. He was employed in industrial construction and was a member of Kirby Memorial Baptist Church in Gaffney.
Surviving in addition to his wife are son, Steve McCraw of Charlotte; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Melissa McCraw, of Vale, N.C.; daughter and her fiance, Amy McCraw and Wayne Eudy of Grover; granddaughter, Ashley McCraw of Vale; grandson, Roger McCraw of Vale; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Wayne and Judy McCraw, Walter and Kay McCraw, all of Gaffney, and Jerry and Birgit McCraw of Savannah, Ga.; and a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Marvin Duncan of Gaffney.
Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel conducted by the Revs. Richard McCraw and Richard Lancaster. Burial will be in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family is at the residence.

Boyce H. Dickson
Retired from Musgrove Mill
Boyce Howell Dickson, 78, of 521 W. Montgomery St., died today, April 13, 2001, in Brookview Healthcare Center.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the husband of Imogene McCraw Dickson and son of the late John Sherman Dickson and the late Carrie Turner Dickson. He was retired after 45 years of service at Musgrove Mill and was a member of Park Hill Baptist Church.
Also surviving are a daughter, Denise Beattie of Gaffney; four sons, Jeffrey Dickson, Danny Dickson, Dennis Dickson, all of Gaffney, and Steven Dickson of Toccoa, Ga.; nine grandchildren; and a sister, Pearl Hancock of Gaffney.
The family is at the home of Jeffrey Dickson, 518 S. Limestone St.

Phillip J. Pecora
Retired textile colorist
Phillip James Pecora, 87, of 2449 Union Hwy., died Thursday, April 12, 2001, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Independence, La., he was the husband of Emma Pittman Pecora and was a retired colorist for Cherokee Finishing Company. He was a charter member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was an Air Force veteran.
Also surviving are a son, Phillip Randy Pecora of St. Francisville, La.; a daughter, Cheryl Pecora of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Josie Larusso of Independence, La.; and two grandchildren.

Elizabeth S. Perrine
Retired textile employee
Elizabeth Sentell Perrine, 81, formerly of 914 W. Buford St., died Thursday, April 12, 2001, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
Born in Gaffney, she was the widow of Claude Egbirt Perrine Jr. and daughter of the late Cleveland Garfield Sentell and the late Amy Margaret Blanton Sentell. She was a retired textile employee and a member of West End Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Claude Perrine of Charlotte; a daughter, Gale Riley of New Hampshire; two sisters, Margaret Gordon of Gaffney and Julia Evelyn Lathan of Shelby; and five grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Charlie Wilborn. The family will receive friends following the service.
The family is at their respective homes.

Myrtle May Williams
Cherokee County native
CHESNEE – Myrtle May Williams, 91, of 509 Pickens St., died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at her home.
A native of Cherokee County, she was the widow of Parley Williams and daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cromer. She was a homemaker and member of New Pleasant Baptist Church. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are a son, James H. Williams of Spartanburg; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at Forest Lawn Mortuary in Chesnee. Graveside services will follow at 2:30 p.m. in the Williams family cemetery in Gaffney with the Rev. Shane Belue officiating.
The family is at the residence.

Billy B. (Doc) Moore
Retired agriculture teacher
Billy Boyce (Doc) Moore, 79, of 418 N. Green River Rd., died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at his residence.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the husband of Jean Sanders Moore and son of the late Ben Tillman Moore and the late Ethel Scruggs Moore. He was a retired schoolteacher after 36 years of service and was a former agriculture teacher at Gaffney and Hickory Grove high schools. He was sponsor of the Future Farmers of America at Gaffney High for over 30 years.
Mr. Moore was a graduate of Clemson University and did graduate work at Clemson and the University of South Carolina. He was a member of the American Vocational Association, the S.C. Agriculture Teachers Association and the Cherokee County Cattleman’s Association.
He was awarded the State Farmer degree in 1977 and was recipient of the Outstanding Service Award to Cherokee County Schools and the Outstanding Conservation Teacher Award.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Steve Wood of Gaffney; a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Margaret Moore of Raleigh, N.C.; a son, Benny Moore of Gaffney; grandchildren, Philip Tillman Moore, Carolyn Margaret Moore, Meridith Moore Wood, Frederick Benjamin Moore II; a sister, Ethelee M. Martin of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and a special friend, Freddie Ramirez.
The family is at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to State Line Baptist Church Building Fund, 1328 State Line Rd., Gaffney, S.C. 29341.

J.B. Camp
Retired Duke Power employee
Deacon J.B. Camp, 77, of 405 W. Birnie St., died Wednesday, April 11, 2000, at his home.
A native of Rutherfordton, N.C., he was the husband of Helen Morris Camp and son of the late Moses Camp and the late Laura Green Camp. He was a member of Mikes Creek Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and member of the All Male Chorus. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. He was retired from Duke Power and Summit Security.
Also surviving are four sons, John Link Camp of Spartanburg, Howard Lee Camp and Avery Camp of Gaffney and Roger Gene Camp of Gastonia, N.C.; three daughters, Lois Camp Oglesby of Charlotte, N.C., Debrah Camp Blanton and Rebecca Camp Armstrong of Gaffney; one sister, Laura Mae Watkins of Gaffney; 15 grandchildren, three reared in the home as children, Shondra Grey Camp, Timothy Oglesby of Norfolk, Va., and Reginald Oglesby of Charlotte; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Mikes Creek Baptist Church conducted by Dr. S.M. Johnson, Dr. J.W. Sanders Sr., Dr. Leon C. Rector, Dr. C.V. Owens and the Revs. Tony Macomson, Jerry Manning, Curry Wray and Sammy Leach. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.
Pallbearers will be the Deacons and Trustees of the church. Honorary pallbearers will be Willie Proctor, Mandret Wilkins, Herman Wood and Roy P. Ratchford.
Flower bearers will the deaconesses and wives of the trustees of the church.
Foster Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Daisy Dawkins
Services for Daisy Littlejohn Dawkins, 82, of 418 West Carlisle Street, will be held Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Indian Hill Baptist Church conducted by the Revs. Ulysses Smith, Mary D. Jefferies and Harold Jones and Minister Caroline Jones. Burial will be in Gaffney Memorial Park. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Louis Davis, Chad Smith, Tyrone Smith, Elder Richard Dowdle, Rufus Littlejohn and Leon Dawkins. Honorary pallbearers will be Ronnie Dawkins and the Rev. Harold Dawkins.
Flower bearers will be Peggy Littlejohn, Ruby Hemphill, Selena Weeks, Sandra Young, Betina January, Tonya Clay, Essie Simpson and Shirley Allen. Honorary flower bearers will be Susie Smith, Marvann Dover, Rosie Allen and Bonte Hemphill.

Hugh C. Allen
Vietnam veteran
MOORESBORO, N.C. – Hugh Curtis Allen, 58, of 7241 Hwy. 221 South, died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at his home.
A native of Spartanburg County, he was preceded in death by his father, Paul Allen, of Chesnee and a brother, Harold Allen. He was a Vietnam Army veteran, a lifetime member of the DAV, a member of Hicks Grove Baptist Church and a self-employed mechanic.
Surviving are his mother, Belvia Dixon Allen of Chesnee; wife, Betty Wease Allen of the home; two brothers, Ed K. Allen of Gaffney and O’Neal Allen of Chesnee; and two sisters, Faye A. Blanton and Caroline Allen, both of Chesnee.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Hicks Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Raymond Byrd and Ad Hooper officiating.
Visitation will be today from 7-9 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, Caroleen.
