Sonia P. Broome
Employed by Cherokee County School District
BLACKSBURG – Sonia Maureen Parker Broome, 54, of 436 W. Carolina St., died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Cherokee County, she was the wife of Larry Ray Broome Sr. and daughter of the late Horace Junior Parker and the late Mozelle Towery Parker. She worked on the bus for the handicapped for the Cherokee County School District.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Larry Ray Broome Jr. of Blacksburg; a daughter, Lisa Dianne Broome of the home; three grandchildren, John, Justin and Tyler Coleman; a brother, Roger Parker of York; a sister, Dixie Lynn Parker of Blacksburg; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Hance of Blacksburg.
Services will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. at Blacksburg Church of God conducted by the Revs. Ricky Scruggs and James Clark and Dr. Billy Boone. Burial will be Clingman Memorial Gardens. Body will be placed in the church at 3:30 p.m.
The family is at the residence and will receive friends tonight from 7-9 at Gordon Mortuary.
Members of the Blacksburg Volunteer Fire Department will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 1886, Gaffney, S.C. 29342.

Paul L. Gordon
Retired from Lowenstein
BLACKSBURG – Paul Lee Gordon, 71, of 122 McKee Dr., died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Gaffney, he was the husband of Catherine Childers Gordon of the home and son of the late Willie H. and Mattie Dowdle Gordon. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was retired from Lowenstein Mills, Gaffney.
Also surviving are three sons, Billy Dean Gordon of Richmond, Va., Timothy Lee Gordon of Blacksburg and William Joe Gordon of Chicago, Ill.; a brother, Herman N. Gordon of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a sister, Barbara Nance of Gaffney; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Paul Steven Gordon.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30-8 at White Columns and other times they will be at the home.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Oakland Cemetery in Gaffney with the Revs. Ken Reid and Chris Barrett officiating.

Howard Tesneair
Cherokee County native
SPARTANBURG – Howard Lee "Bubba" Tesneair, 56, of 8678 Wrengate St., died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the son of the late Cleo P. and Geneva Shipmall Tesneair.
Surviving are two sisters, Agnes Hobbs of Spartanburg and Shirley Mullinax of Gaffney.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Holston Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Inman.
The family is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Brown, 110 Pinewood Rd., Spartanburg.

Bessie H. McAbee
Retired from Oxford
Bessie Howard McAbee, 83, of 706 8th St., died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Greenville County, she was the widow of James R. McAbee and daughter of the late William Peter Howard and the late Etta McAbee Howard. She was retired from Oxford Industries and was a member of Mt. Ararat Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Gladys Byars of Gaffney; three sons, Robert McAbee of Concord, N.C., Ralph McAbee and Earl McAbee, both of Gaffney; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Ararat Church Cemetery conducted by the Revs. Tommy Wright and Stuart Kersey.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Sellars, Jimmy McAbee, Russell Wilkins, Guy Upchurch, Ronnie Smith, Kelly McAbee and Curly Howard.
Jack Kirby will serve as honorary pallbearer.
The family is at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, 412 McKowns Mountain Rd., Gaffney, S.C. 29340.

Harold T. Lamb
BPW meter reader
Harold Thomas "Elmo" Lamb, 63, of 108 Gettys Dr. died Friday, July 26, 2002, in Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System.
A native of Chesnee, he was a son of the late O.B and Nellie Horton Lamb and widower of Peggy Jean Mabry Lamb. He was a meter reader for the Board of Public Works, a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church and a veteran.
Survivors include a daughter, Crystal Lamb Jackson of the home; a brother, Glen Lamb of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a sister, Hilda Cantrell of Chesnee.
Graveside services were held Sunday at 4 p.m. in Oakland Cemetery, conducted by the Revs. Harold King and Alan Peeler.
The family is at the home.

Mary G. Boulton
Daughter of former Limestone College president
COLUMBUS, N.C. – Mary Brinson Granberry Boulton, 85, of Laurel Lake Dr., Tryon Estates, died Monday, July 29, 2002, in Tryon Estates Medical Facility, Columbus.
Mary was born in Macon, Ga. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Robert Colley Granberry and Leila Belle Brinson Granberry. With sister Margaret and brother Robert, Mary grew up in Gaffney on the campus of Limestone College where he father was President. She was graduated from Limestone in 1937 with majors in English and French.
In the fall of 1940, she met Wayne Kelly Boulton, a salesman with the Royal Typewriter Company in New York City. They were married six weeks later. After World War II, the family settled in Ardsley, NY, and later in Avon, CT.
In addition to being a loving wife and mother, Mary was an accomplished watercolorist, and received over 60 awards for her paintings. She held memberships in the American Watercolor Society and National Pen Women, and was a founding member of Gallery 20 in Hendersonville, NC. Her paintings now hang in private collections as far north as Maine, in New York City, and as far south as Martinique and Guadeloupe.
Mary is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Wayne and Vicki Boulton of Baltimore, MD; by her grandsons, Matthew Myer Boulton of Chicago, IL, and Christopher Boulton of Oakland, CA; two nephews, Rev. Dr. James Richardson of Shelby, NC, and Dr. George Richardson of Columbia, SC.
A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. today at Tryon Estates Auditorium in Columbus. A graveside service will be held at 5 p.m. today at Frederick Memorial Gardens on Highway 11 in Gaffney.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to The Samaritan Fund of Tryon Estates, 617 Laurel Lake Dr., Columbus, NC 28722; or to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, 130 Forest Glen Dr., Columbia, NC 28722.

Ruby W. Warren
Retired LPN
Ruby Waldrup Warren, 87, of Peachtree Center, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
Born in Gaffney, she was the daughter of the late Stephen Waldrup and the late Etta Jane Ponder Waldrup. She was a member of Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church, a retired LPN and a member of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are a daughter, Ellen Duncan of Gaffney; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Wade Waldrup.
Graveside services were held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Oakland Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Stuart Kersey and Dr. Clyde Thomas.
Pallbearers were Ernest Duncan, Allen Duncan, Rick Gilfillan, Randy Harper, Matthew Sellars and Josh Gilfillan.
The family is at the home of Ellen Duncan, 204 Tiffany Terrace.
Memorials may be made to S.R.M.C. Outpatient Hospice, 120 Heywood Ave., Suite 300, Spartanburg S.C. 29302.

Elvira J. Samuel
Retired nursing assistant
KERSHAW – Elvira J. Samuel, 72, died Monday, July 29, 2002, at her residence.
She was the widow of Zebedee Samuel Sr. and daughter of the late Rev. Ed Jones and the late Beola Duncan Jones. She was a retired nursing assistant.
Surviving are a son, Zebedee Samuel Jr. of Kershaw; three brothers, Larry Jones of Gaffney, Roseward Jones and Loman Jones of Kershaw; five sisters, Nannie Jones of Zuni, Va., Mrs. Perry King, Mrs. Roe King, Jackie Grove and Marilyn Izzard of Kershaw.
Services were held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Ebenezer A.M.E. Zion Church, Camden, with the Rev. Vernell Stukes officiating. Burial was in Highland Height Cemetery, Kershaw.

Ivey D. Oglesby
Gaffney High graduate
Ivey Dentisee Oglesby, 44, of 500 Park St., died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center. Born in Gaffney, he was a son of the late Joe and Irene Tate Oglesby and was a graduate of Gaffney High School.
Surviving are a sister, Thelma Spruill, of Gaffney.
The family is at the home of his sister, 421 E. Montgomery St.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Gilmore Mortuary Chapel with Rev. L.T. Tate officiating. Burial will be in Gaffney Memorial Park.

Martha J. Davis
Wife of Dr. Denver J. Davis
Martha Jane Davis, daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. John Ward Brown and wife of 62 years of Dr. Denver J. Davis, slipped into the arms of God on July 31, 2002, after a courageous fight with cancer.
She was born in Fairmont, W.Va., on Dec. 3, 1919. Her musical education entailed the Peabody Conservatory of Music with a bachelor of music. In addition, she studied voice under a number of renowned professors in Baltimore. Academically, she graduated from Ellen Cushing Junior College in 1937.
She served on the Women’s Missionary Union Executive Committee in South Carolina and Maryland. Also, she was regent of the Col. William Preston DAR Chapter from 1974-1977 and earlier served many of the offices of the chapter.
While in South Carolina, she was active with the South Carolina Mental Health Association and in Roanoke she worked with the Multiple Sclerosis Society. She was busy with local garden clubs until her retirement.
She contributed numerous articles to religious and other publications. Who’s Who listed her accomplishments for several years.
Although she had been a member of Rosalind Hills Baptist Church for 10 years, she had her membership with Waverly Place Baptist Church. Vinton Baptist Church elected Mrs. Davis and her husband honorary lifetime members.
Martha Jane is survived by her husband; a daughter in Barnwell, S.C., Connie Jean Fortanbary and her husband, Wayne Fortanbary; a son, Dr. John Jackson Davis of Roanoke and his wife Lisa Davis, with their daughters, Rachel McCall Davis, the only granddaughter.
She is also survived by four grandsons and their families: Michael Wayne Fortanbary and wife Ramona and great-grandchildren, Lauren, Ashley and Andrew of Leesburg, Va.; Davis Jackson Fortanbary and wife Kitty and great-grandchildren, Will and Alex of Marietta, Ga.; Charles Edward Fortanbary of Charlotte, N.C., and John Lloyd Fortanbary of Columbia.
Services will be at Oakey’s North Chapel on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Gardens. The Rev. Ed Nicholson and the Rev. Reed Ness will officiating.
The family will receive friends at Oakey’s North Chapel today from 3-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.
