Henry E. Ruppe
Retired from Doran Textiles
SHELBY – Henry Elliott Ruppe, 72, of 879 Bellview Dr., died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, in Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
A native of Cherokee County, S.C., he was born on Jan. 17, 1930. He was a retired machine fixer from Doran Textiles (Dover Group) and was the husband of Doris Jean Goode Ruppe. His parents were the late Edley O.B. Ruppe and the late Irene Fowler Ruppe. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Donald R. Ruppe of Rural Hall, N.C., and Charles E. Ruppe of Shelby; two brothers, Jerry Ruppe of Shelby and Johnny Ruppe of Polkville; four sisters, Faye Willis of Shelby, Mamie Lou Lackey of Polkville, Harriett Cook of Ellenboro and Juanita Hawkins of Lawndale; and five grandchildren, Rebekah Ruppe, Patrick Ruppe, Jason Ruppe, Andrew Ruppe and Sharon Ruppe.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Ruppe was preceded in death by a daughter, Kay Ruppe, and a sister, Venelia Cash.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel, Fallston, conducted by the Rev. Ervin Price. Burial will be in Mulls Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday at the funeral home from 1-2 p.m.

Mary Ann Moss
Retired anesthesiologist
Mary Ann Blackwell Moss, 69, formerly of Blacksburg, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, in Brian Center, Columbia.
A native of Blacksburg, she was the widow of Harold Woodrow Moss and daughter of the late Marvin Lawrence Blackwell and the late Isabelle Mary White Blackwell. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church and a retired anesthesiologist from Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. She along with Dr. Harwood founded an anesthesia school in Columbia in 1972.
Mrs. Moss was Mrs. South Carolina Baptist Hospital in 1953 and was very dedicated and loyal to the medical professional. She worked at Spartanburg Regional in labor and delivery for 25 years until her retirement.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, H.C. Blackwell.
Surviving are a daughter, Bonnie Durham Robinson of Lexington; a son, Ralph (Mac) McIver Durham of Columbia; three grandchildren; a brother, Marvin L. Blackwell Jr. of Spartanburg; and a sister, Rachel Jane McCartha Carpenter of Blacksburg.
Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Buffalo Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Marshall Foster. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.
The family will receive friends today from 1-2 p.m. at the church and at other times they will be at their respective homes.
Memorials may be made to Buffalo Baptist Church, 133 Bridges Rd., Blacksburg, S.C. 29702.

Margie S. Carpenter
Longtime sales clerk
Margie Stroup Wright Carpenter, 79, of 309 E. Fairview Ave., died today, Oct. 9, 2002, at her residence.
Born in Gaffney, she was the widow of J. Wilmon Wright and James Leburn Carpenter and daughter of the late Thomas Elzie Stroup and the late Minnie Spencer Stroup.
Mrs. Carpenter was a sales clerk for 45 years at various stores on Main Street in Gaffney and was a Red Cross and Mental Health Association volunteer. She was a former member of Cliffside Baptist Church and was a member of Draytonville Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years, prayer group leader and a member of the senior citizens group.
Surviving are three sisters, Minnie Pearl Potter, Sue Hamrick, both of Gaffney, and June Davis of Cliffside; a step-daughter, Jane Waddell of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and five step-grandchildren.
Services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Draytonville Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Todd Braswell and Robert Ivey. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be Cliffside Baptist Church Sunday School Class and Prayer Group.
The family is at the residence.

Laura M. Sarratt
Retired from Wal-Mart and Oxford Industries
Laura Minerva Sarratt, 90, of 653 Ellis Ferry Rd., died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
Born in Gaffney, she was the daughter of the late Noble Lucius Sarratt and the late Willie Missouri Jolley Sarratt. She retired from Wal-Mart after 20 years of service, working for the last few years as a greeter. She was also a retired supervisor at Oxford Industries and was a member of Grassy Pond Baptist Church.
Surviving are a sister, Maggie R. Sarratt, of the home and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Miss Sarratt was preceded in death by three sisters, Ethel S. Blanton, Jewel S. Sarratt and Minnie Ozelia Sarratt, and two brothers, Hillary Eugene Sarratt and Quenton Sarratt.
Services will be held today at 3 p.m. at Grassy Pond Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Roger Aycock. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.
Pallbearers will be Sidney Lemmons, L.C. Sarratt, Tim Wyatt, W.H. McCraw Jr. and Osborne Lemmons.
The family is at the residence.

Geraldine J. Smith
Services for Geraldine J. Smith, 52, of 507 S. Oliver St., widow of John Marion Smith, will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church, conducted by the Revs. Heyward Boyd Sr., J.C. O’Neal, Roderick Oglesby and Minister Vincent Logan. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Body will be placed in the church Friday at 2 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Dennis Daniels, Frankie Webster, Corey robinson, Darryle Douglas, Clinton Rodgers and Jacquin Jefferies.
Honorary pallbearers will be Thomas Mayberry, George Logan, Jake Jefferies, Donald Banks and Steve Littlejohn.
Flower bearers will be LaShawn Boyd, Carla Tanner, Minnie Ellis, Annie Crosby, Mino Smith, Virginia Brown, Mary Tate, Andrienne Jefferies, Leslie Rainey, Pam Henderson and Ashley Stevenson.
The family is at the home of Russell Smith Sr., 111 Carter Heights Dr., Gaffney.

Malvin D. Spencer
Malvin Davis Spencer, formerly of 616 W. Smith St., died today, April 16, 2003, at Peachtree Centre.

Dewey Martin
World War II veteran
CHESNEE – Robert Dewey Martin, 83, of 8060 Parris Bridge Rd., died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at his residence.
A native of Spartanburg County, he was the husband of Mary Frances Wilson Martin of the home and son of the late Von Derald Martin and Nettie Mae Ridings Martin. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a farmer and also owner of Dewey Martin’s Tire Service in Chesnee for 12 years. He was a member of Trinity Methodist Church and American Legion Post No. 48.
Also surviving are two daughters, Sandra Harris of Chesnee and Nancy Clary of Gaffney; three sons, Ralph Dean Wilson and Johnny burke, both of Chesnee, and Mike Burke of Spartanburg; four sisters, Lois Thomas of Spartanburg, Ruby Whitlock and Tina Sawyer, both of Campobello, and Judy Price of Los Angeles, Calif.; two brothers, J.D. Martin and Jerry Martin, both of California; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held today at 3 p.m. at Eggers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Revs. Fae Walker, Eddie Cooper and Tommy Bailey. Burial will be in Springhill Memorial Gardens.
The family is at the residence.

Justice B. Jackson
Justice Blake Jackson, 4, of 313 Green River Rd., died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Spartanburg, he was the son of Mitchel (Mitch) Wayne Jackson and Christina (Crissy) Guy Jackson. He was a member of Restoration Church.
Also surviving are two brothers, Jerred Jackson and Isaac Jackson of the home; paternal grandparents, Mitchel and Gloria Jackson of Gaffney; paternal great-grandmother, Jackie Allison of St. Simon Island, Ga.; paternal great-grandparents, James and Marie Parker of Gaffney; maternal grandfather, Kevin Guy of Shelby; maternal grandmother, Cathy Franklin of Gaffney; maternal step-grandfather, Don Franklin of Gaffney; maternal great-grandmother, Ann Guy of Gaffney; and maternal great-grandparents, Floyd and Lillian Gordon of Gaffney.
He was preceded in death by his paternal great-grandfather, Ted Guy.
The family is at the home of Floyd and Lillian Gordon, 324 Macedonia Rd.

Betty Shippy
Cherokee County native
Betty Jean Shippy, 69, of 108 Lincoln Dr. in Gaf-fney, died Sunday, June 1 at 6:30 a.m. in the Mission St. Joseph Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville, N.C.
A native of Cherokee Co., she was the daughter of the late Adam B. Littlejohn and the late Bessie Hoey Littlejohn. She was a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Suzette Harris of Henrietta, N.C. and Varett Shippy of Gaffney; four sons, Roger Shippy of Norwalk, Conn., James Shippy, Tim Shippy and Patrick Shippy of the home; two sisters, Marilyn Littlejohn and Carolyn Proctor of Gaffney; two brothers, Willie James Littlejohn and Robert Littlejohn of Gaffney; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
John Reynolds
U.S. Air Force vet
John Dee Reynolds, 66, of 753 Worth Green River Road, died Thursday, May 29, 2003 after a brief illness.
A native of Cherokee Co., he was the son of the late John Reynolds Sr. and Annie Bowen Reynolds.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was a retired textile employee. He was a member of Piedmont Baptist Church.
He is survived by a daughter, DeAnna Marie Simon of Inman; a stepson, Michael Lee Hoyle of Harris, N.C.; a sister, Annie Pearl Dixon of Lake Bowen; a brother, Roland Reynolds of Chesnee; three stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Eggers Funeral Chapel in Chesnee, with the Rev. Larry Fleming officiating.
Burial will follow in Springhill Memorial Gardens.
The family is at the home of his daughter, 10-A Amos St., Inman.
