MT. HOLLY, N.C. - Hugh Austin Maloney, 94, of 451 Holly Circle, Mt. Holly, N.C., died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at home.
A native of Sharon, S.C., he was the widower of Geneva Martin Maloney and son of the late Will and Vistula Plexico Maloney.
He was a member of First A.R.P. Church, Rock Hill, S.C.; and was retired from Rock Hill Printing.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Miriam M. and Bobby Goforth of Mt. Holly, N.C.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, John Martin.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at White Columns-Blacksburg.
A celebration of life service will be held Tuesday, June 3, 2003, 2 p.m., graveside at Mountain View Cemetery, Blacksburg, with the Rev. Jim McClurkin officiating.

Loma Hamrick
Retired textile worker
Loma (Omie) Hamrick, 86, of 207 Wilbur St. in Blacksburg, died Sunday, June 1, 2003 at Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Rutherford Co., she was the widow of Paul James Hamrick, and the daughter of the late Archie Yelton and the late Sarah Wright Yelton.
She was a retired textile worker and was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Charles James Hamrick of Cowpens and William Paul Hamrick of Blacksburg; four daughters, Bonnie Jean Hamrick, Patricia Childers, and Janice Childers, all of Blacksburg, and Lillie Martin of Gaffney; 27 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchilren.
The family is at 207 Wilbur St. in Blacksburg.

Frank Upton
WWII Veteran
Frank Melvin Upton, 86, of Brookview HealthCare Center, Gaffney, died Thursday, May 29, 2003 at home.
Born in Alderson, W. Va., he was the son of the late Frank R. Upton and the late Mamie Thomas Upton.
He was retired from Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Corp.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by three sisters, Lucille Upton of Alderson, W.Va., Elizabeth Propes of Norfolk, W. Va., and Rosalie Stennett of Greenville, W. Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Frederick Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Betty Gentry officiating.Visitation will follow at the cemetery.
The family members are at their respective homes.
William H. Bell
Graveside services for William Hall Bell of Sour Lake, Texas, will be held Saturday, June 7, at 11 a.m. at Mountain View Cemetery in Blacksburg.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the son of the late Hall W. and Lois Sanders Bell who resided in Blacksburg. He attended Blacksburg High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a member of the VFW and the Eagles' Club of Gilchrist, Texas.
Surviving are a son, William Joseph Bell of Battleboro, Vermont; two brothers, David W. Bell of Sour Lake and Dale E. Bell of Lynchburg, Va.; a sister, Barbara Clark of Virginia Beach, Va.; and three grandchildren.

Francis B. Grubb Sr.
Retired U.S. Navy captain
Francis Bunyan Grubb Sr., 86, of Stafford, Va., died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mr. Grubb was a retired U.S. Navy captain, having served during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a 1939 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and a member of Mount Ararat Baptist Church in Stafford.
Surviving are his wife, Anne Grubb; two sons, Francis Bunyan Grubb Jr. of Summerville and John Michael Grubb of Stafford; two daughters, Margo Grubb Agee and Diane Grubb Stringer, both of Stafford; a sister, Eugenia Davenport of Ohio; several grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Mr. Grubb was preceded in death by a granddaughter and a sister.
Services will be held today at 1 p.m. at Mount Ararat Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Aubrey D. Whitten Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Bobbie S. Brown
Gaffney native
Bobbie Helen Simmons Brown, 76, of 400 Webber Rd., formerly of 4 Buckthorn Rd., Spartanburg, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003.
Mrs. Brown was born March 9, 1927, in Gaffney, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late George Overton Simmons, Sr. and Erlene Martin Simmons. She was the widow of John Ashmore Brown, Sr., who preceded her in death June 27, 1991. Mrs. Brown was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Brown was currently a member of The Episcopal Church of the Advent. She was a former member of Saint Matthew's Episcopal Church, where she attended for more than thirty years. While at Saint Matthew's, she was a member of the Episcopal Church Women, served on The Altar Guild, was a member of The Daughters of the King, and also served as a lay reader. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Brown graduated from Gaffney High School in 1945. She retired from Sellers Seafood after thirty years of employment.
Survivors include three sons, the Rev. John Ashmore Brown, Jr. and wife, Pamela Hammett Brown of Columbia, South Carolina, Charlie George Brown of Acton, California and the Rev. Robert Lee Brown and wife, Sandra McGee Brown of Spartanburg; three grandchildren, Derek Christopher Brown, Zachary Sanders Brown, Rebecca Simmons Brown; and one great-grandson, Payton Ashmore Brown.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Simmons Humphries, Betty Jean Simmons Mabry, Sara Simmons Quinn; and a brother, George Overton Simmons, Jr.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, June 6, 2003 at The Episcopal Church of the Advent.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2003 at the Oakland Cemetery in Gaffney, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Clay H. Turner, the Rev. Marilyn M. Sanders and the Rev. Dr. Donald E. Chapman.
Serving as pallbearers will be David Mabry, Ray Mabry, Harold Wood, Scott Wood, Bill Simmons, Rhett Sanders, Frank O'Kobrick and John Sellers.

Louise P. Jones
1937 graduate of Limestone College
Louise Pettit Jones, 90, who lived at 1643 W. Rutledge Ave. for 61 years, died Thursday, June 5, 2003, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
Born in Gaffney, she was the widow of L.D. Jones and daughter of the late William Henry Pettit and the late Maggie Whelchel Pettit. She was a homemaker and member of Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church, where she taught children's Sunday School for many years and was an active supporter of the church. She graduated in 1937 from Limestone College and was involved for many years in the Cherokee County Home Demonstration Club.
Surviving are two sisters, Margaret Sparks and Millicent Garvin, both of Gaffney; a brother, Raymond Pettit of Spartanburg; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by two daughters, Anita Jones Spearman and Nancy Gale Jones; three brothers, James Pettit, Harold Pettit and Jeff Pettit; and a sister, Helen Poole.
Services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Clyde Thomas. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens. Body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m.
The family will receive friends Sunday at the church from 2:30 until the hour of service and at other times they will be at 1710 W. Rutledge Ave.

Ailene Zara Phillips Ruppe, 85, of 1103 Champion Ferry Rd., died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at Brookview HealthCare.
A native of Cherokee County, she was the widow of Melroe G. Ruppe and daughter of the late Walter E. Phillips and the late Minnie Withrow Phillips. She was retired from Oxford and was a member of Cherokee Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Brenda Ruppe Jones of Mooresboro, Zara Ruppe Barnhill of Gaffney and Joyce Ruppe Quinn of Charlotte; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Cherokee Creek Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Mike Frazier and John Goforth. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Ruppe, Gary Lovelace, Glenn Lovelace, Jerry Martin, Mike Jones and Mark Bolin.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home and at other times they will be at the residence, 1103 Champion Ferry Rd.
