Harris, Melvin

Melvin Harris of Anderson died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Anderson Area Medical Center.

He was born in Anderson County.

Surviving are daughter, Qintessa Simmons of Anderson, and brothers, Charles Robinson and Timothy Lowden of Anderson.

He was the son of Estell Harris.

Services are at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Anderson Memorial Gardens.

The Unity Mortuary of Anderson, is in charge of arrangements.

Cole, Nellie

PELZER — Nellie Anniebell Tollett Cole, 85, of 771 Preston Road died Sunday, March 31, 2002, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Greenville County, she was retired from Woodmont High School Cafeteria and was a member of the Ware Place Church of God.

Surviving are sons, Guy Alvin Cole and Robert Norman Cole of Pelzer; daughters, Clovis C. Cole of Laurinburg, N.C., and Rendie C. Kolstad of Mooresville, N.C.; sister, Clovis Ross of Pelzer; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of William Casper Cole and the daughter of the late John Henry and Mamie Davis Tollett. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mamie Ruth Cole.

Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Gray Mortuary by the Revs. Roy Thacker and Gary Kolstad; burial will follow in Greenville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

The family is at the home.

Cathey, Robert P. Sr.

Robert P. “Bob” Cathey Sr., 83, of Mountain City died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Rabun County Memorial Hospital in Clayton.

Born in Rabun County, he had lived most of his life in Mountain City. He was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran. He was a farmer and had worked in the Textile Industry. He worked for Rabun Mills for many years, as well as Empire. He was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are sons, Robert P. Cathey Jr. of Lexington, N.C., and Kenneth Cathey of Mountain City; daughters, Sue Lee of Glendale, Md., Montie Breeding of Woodstock, and Jane Martin of Atlanta; sister, Lois Dotson of Mountain City; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was the widower of Mary Cathey and the son of the late James Frank and Montie Rogers Cathey.

The body will be cremated.

Memorial services are at 11 a.m. Monday at Hunter Funeral Home by the Rev. James E. Turpen. The family will be at the home in Mountain City, and will receive friends Monday following the Memorial Services.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Mountain View Healthcare Center.

Carson, Dorothy

PENDLETON — Dorothy Carson, 78, of 1700 Refuge Road, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at Anderson Area Medical Center.

Born in Anderson County, she was a member of St. Luke FBH Church and the Ladies Aide of the church.

Surviving are daughters, Alice Linda Scott and Willie Mae Williams, both of Anderson, and Diane White and Brenda Carson, both of Pendleton; son, Walter Carson of the home; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of Willie Carson and the daughter of the late Aaron and Alice Blackmon. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Thelma Smith, Ezebel Robinson and Jesse Blackmon; and two brothers, Lether and Conde Blackmon.

Services are at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke FBHChurch; burial will be in Fairview AME Church Cemetery. The body is at Johnson Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The family will be at the home.

Burrows, Peters M.

Dr. Peters M. Burrows, of Clemson, died.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central Clemson Commons.

Marion, Lois

MARION — Lois Swain Marion, 80, of 5227 Jean Drive died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at the WFU/Baptist Medical Center.

Born in Winston-Salem, N.C., she earned her bachelor of science from Salem College and was a member of Salem Baptist Church, where she was active in primary church, for more than 50 years.

Surviving are son, Russell Aubrey Marion II of Clemson; daughters, Susan Marion Miller of Greensboro and Elizabeth (Libby) Marion Adams of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren; sisters, Kathryn Reich Rector of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Thelma Wagoner of Rome; and a brother, William Luther Swain Jr. of Walkertown.

She was the widow of Russell Aubrey Marion Sr. and the daughter of the late William Luther and Martha (Mattie) Jane Reich Swain.

Family and friends will meet at Morris Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery in Walkertown for a graveside service at 2 p.m. Saturday by the Rev. Floyd Boles and Russell Marion II. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Voglers Main Street Chapel.

Flowers will be accepted. The family suggests memorials be directed to Mrs. Marion’s favorite charities: Piedmont Bible College, Salem Baptist Church, Forsyth Rescue Squad, or Upstate South Carolina Alzheimer’s Association.

Pinson, Ardine P.

HONEA PATH — Ardine Pagenkoph Pinson, 76, of 218 Wildwood Drive died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at the Hospice House.

Born in Ashippun, Wis., she attended the University of Wisconsin. She was retired from the Universal Film Company (MCA). She was a member of the Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Anderson and a member of the Martha Adams Kay Sunday School Class at the First Baptist Church in Belton.

Surviving is her widower, J. Clarence Pinson of the home.

She was the daughter of the late Ernest and Emma Louise Ramthun Pagenkoph. She was preceded in death by a sister, Elvie Harvey.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church, Belton by the Revs. Howard Jones and T. Dale Lynch, and Dr. Booker Bagby; burial will be in the Garden of Memories in Belton. The body is at Cox Funeral Home , where the family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

The family will be at the home.

Tolbert, Jessie

BALTIMORE — Jessie Tolbert, 89, of 3412 Cedardale Road died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at his home.

Born in Anderson, he was a former member of Thompson Centennial United Methodist Church.

Surviving are widow, Janet Witherspoon Tolbert; son, Jocephus Groves of Indiana; twin sister, Janet Tolbert Starks of Anderson; and two grandchildren.

He was the son o f the late Preston and Mary McCully Tolbert.

Services are at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Rock Hill Baptist Church; burial will be in Westview Cemetery. The body is at Johnson Funeral Home, Anderson, and will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

The family will be at 204 Lee St., Anderson.

Stegall, Louise K.

Louise Knox Stegall, 79, of 1809 Green Street, Anderson, widow of William Edward “Bill” Stegall, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at the Hospice House.

The body is at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Downtown Chapel, and the family will be at the residence.

The family suggests memorials be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, S.C. 29621.

Robertson, Walter

HARTWELL, Ga. —Walter Robertson of 611 Patterson St. died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Mack’s Funeral Home, Hartwell.

Pickens, Sylvester Vernon

RALEIGH, N.C. — Sylvester Vernon Pickens, 90, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at his home, 1200 Carlos Drive, Apartment 309.

Born in Pickens, he served in the Greenwood Police Department and retired from Greenwood Mills. He served in many capacities as a member of the Tranquil United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World.

Surviving are widow, Elvira McGill Pickens; son, Samuel Sylvester Pickens; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter, brothers, Robert Lee Pickens of Charlotte, and Augustus David Pickens Jr. of Baltimore; and a sister, Marjorie Butler of Greenwood.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Tranquil United Methodist Church, 1702 McCormick Highway, Greenwood, S.C.; burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends after the service in the Church’s fellowship hall.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Tranquil United Methodist Church. Brown-Wynne, 300 S. Mary St., Raleigh, N.C. 27605, is in charge of arrangements.

Isom, John

HARTWELL, Ga. — John Walker Isom, 72, of 2228 Mount Olivet Road died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at his home.

Born in Hart County, he was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church and Nancy Hart Masonic Lodge No. 690. He was a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Army.

Surviving are widow, Selma Richardson Isom of the home; daughters,, Brenda Hitchcock and Janet Fowler, both of Hartwell; son, John Michael Isom of Hartwell; sisters, Eula Mae Skelton of Hiawassee and Mildred Bowers of Hartwell; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was the son of the late Grove Isom and Ruby Vickery Isom. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Frances Mouchet; and two brothers, Frank and Emil Isom.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Strickland Funeral Home by the Rev. Joe Black; burial will be in Nancy Hart Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

The family will be at the home, Flowers are optional. The family suggests memorials be made to Mt. Olivet Baptist Church Building Fund, 2973 Mt. Olivet Road, Hartwell, Ga. 30643, or to Vista Care Foundation, 1640 Prince Ave., Athens, Ga. 30606.

Hulsey, Betty L.

MT. AIRY, Ga. — Betty L. Hulsey, 49, of Mount Airy died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at Habersham County Medical Center.

Born in Anderson, she was a homemaker and a member of New Birth Baptist Church. Surviving are widower, Kent Hulsey of Mount Airy; daughter, Crystal Holcombe of Homer; son, Kevin Bennett of California; brother, James Harris of Augusta; sisters, Henrietta O’Dell of Hartwell, Virginia Billings of Stall, S.C., and Mary Clark of Hartwell.

She was the daughter of the late Henry and Elizabeth Towe Harris.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Birth Baptist Church by the Revs. Johnny Loudermilk and Mike Wilson; burial will be in Level Grove Cemetery, Cornelia. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at McGahee-Griffin-Stewart Funeral Hone, Cornelia.
