SPARTANBURG - Albert Thomas, 73, of 15 Lynwood Dr., husband of Mrs. Eunice Davis Thomas, died March 27, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
He was born in Union County, the son of the late George Thomas and Mrs. Martha Rice Thomas. He was a member of Wyatt Chapel Baptist Church and was retired from Petty Construction Co.
Surviving in addition to his wife are: five daughters, Ms. Virginia Thomas of Brooklyn, NY, Ms. Martha Meadows of Sanbernadiono, Calif., Mrs. Brenda Nelson of the home, Ms. Trudy Clark and Ms. Tuwana Thomas, both of Asheville; four sons, Albert Thomas Jr. of White Plains, NY, James Thomas of Arden, NC, John Thomas of Riverside, Calif., Tony Thomas of Spartanburg; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Thomas of Jonesville; a grandchild raised in the home, Ms. Ebony Sims of Spartanburg; 18 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren.
The family is at the home.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p. m. at Thompson Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. D. A. Nash. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body will be placed in the church at 2 p. m. Wednesday to await the hour of service.

James Williford Jr.

Jesse James Williford Jr., 59, of 117 Williford Road, died Monday, April 1, 2002 at 4 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness.
Mr. Williford was born in Union on Nov. 19, 1942, a son of Viola Taylor Williford of Union and the late Jesse J. Williford Sr. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and a member of the Woodman of the World. Mr. Williford was employed as a truck driver with Leardis Eison Pulpwood.
Surviving in addition to his mother are two daughters, Charity Williford Howard and Christen Williford, both of Union; two sons, Jesse James Williford III of Union and Josh Williford of the home; a sister, Elaine Williford Burgess of Union and six grandchildren. Mr. Williford was predeceased by a sister, Mary Williford Robinette.
The family is at the home of his mother, Viola T. Williford, 1608 Santuc-Carlisle Highway, Union.

Robert D. Acken
Retired from General Motors
LOCKHART - Robert D. "Bob" Acken, 78, of 200 North Third St., died at his home Monday morning, April 1, 2002, after a brief illness.
Mr. Acken was born in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Dec. 30, 1923, a son of the late Joseph and Alice A. Brooks Acken. He was of the Protestant faith. Mr. Acken was a member of American Legion Post #76 and a member of the UAW. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and was a retired auto worker with General Motors in Flint, Mich.
Survivors include a daughter, Constance M. Porter of Lockhart; two brothers, Alfred Acken and William Acken, both of Flint, Mich.; a sister, Thelma McIntyre of Vallejo, Calif.; a granddaughter, Gina Porter of Union; a special friend, Doris W. Whitlock of the home. Mr. Acken was predeceased by a grandson, Tony Porter.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Alan Quarles. Burial will be in Lockhart Cemetery with military honors.
Active pallbearers will be Nick Whitlock, Clint Cooper, Dale Inman, Brad Parris, Donald Warren and Kenneth Small.
The following are asked to assemble at the funeral chapel Thursday at 3:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Members of American Legion Post #76 and Barry Cannupp and Pete Knox.

Florine Sherbert Gallman, 86, of 1583 Kelly Road, widow of R.E. Gallman Sr., died Monday, April 1, 2002 at 1:25 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness.
Mrs. Gallman was born in Spartanburg County on Sept. 23, 1915, a daughter of the late Roland and Leila Belcher Sherbert. She was an active member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church as long as her health permitted. She was a charter member of the W.S.C.S. of the church and was a former Sunday School teacher. Mrs. Gallman was first married to the late George Waldrop.
Mrs. Gallman was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Nell and Acie Blanton and Betty and Earl Atkinson, all of Union; a son and daughter-in-law, R.E. Gallman Jr. and Clara Gallman of Union; four grandchildren, Jeff Atkinson, Linda Jolly and Andrea Justice of Union and Buddy Gallman of Chester and 11 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Gallman was predeceased by a grandson, Kenneth Blanton.
Funeral services will be held at 3p.m. Thursday at Bethlehem United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Keith Sweat and the Rev. Larry Hyder. Burial will be in the Gallman Family Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be James Lawson, C.W. Garner, Willie Scales, Ken McCraw, Floyd Heatherly and Dean Gallman.
Members of the Adult Sunday School Class and members of the W.S.C.S. of Bethlehem United Methodist Church are asked to sit in a group.

Virginia Shirley Redmon, 81, of 202 John St., widow of Ralph James Redmon Sr., died Sunday, March 31, 2002, at 10 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.
Mrs. Redmon was born in Union on April 16, 1920, a daughter of the late Frazier and Ruth Middlebrooks Shirley. She was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, the Winnie Couch Circle and the Jimmy Smith Sunday School Class. Mrs. Redmon was formerly employed with Milliken & Company, Monarch Plant.
Survivors are two sons and daughters-in-law, Lamar and Mary Redmon of Monroe, N.C. and Michael and Rebekah Redmon of Goose Creek; two sisters, Ethel Russell and Doretha Goodson, both of Union; a brother, Freddie Shirley of Union; a sister-in-law, Mable Eaves of Union; six grandchildren: Vickie Strickland, Monty Redmon, Randy Redmon, Michelle Shaak, Francis Uhrich Jr. and Alison Johnson; and 14 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Redmon was predeceased by a granddaughter, Wendy Redmon and a sister, Marjorie S. Morris.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Benny Green, the Rev. James Crocker and the Rev. Bobby Crocker. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Sara Evelyn Stone Sykes, 87, of Oakmont Nursing Home, formerly of Buffalo, widow of Woodrow Wilson Sykes, died April 2, 2002, at 1:19 a. m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital.
Mrs. Sykes was born in Cross Anchor on May 10, 1914, a daughter of the late Byrd Hix Stone and Nora Watson Stone. She was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church and was retired from Conso Products.
Surviving are: a son and daughter-in-law, James and Nancy Sykes of Buffalo; a sister, Edna Stone Jenkins of Buffalo; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Byrd Lee and Janet Stone of Buffalo and James Hubert Stone of Greenville; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Sykes was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Henry Stone.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a. m. Wednesday at Union memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Jerry Lawson and Rev. Phillip Chandler.
Active pallbearers will be Bobby Stone, Stanley Jenkins, Gerald Inabinett, James Inabinett, Maxie Copeland and Benjamin Wages.

SHARON - Alonzo Wilson, 77, husband of Margaret Moore Wilson, of 2015 Alonzo Road, Sharon, died March 31 at his residence.
Born Nov. 26, 1924, he was a son of the late Luther and Alma Wright Wilson. He retired from Lockhart Mills after 35 years.
Surviving in addition to his wife are: two sons, Willie Matthew Wilson of Chester and Alonzo (Vivian) Wilson Jr. of Sharon; two daughters, Angeline Dianne Moore of Rock Hill and Jerline (Tommy) Carter of Summerville; two brothers, Frank (Grace) Wilson and Willie (Elwillie) Wilson, both of Union; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two sisters=in-law, Leatha Craig and Patricia Wilson, both of Sharon and a beloved aunt, Lucille Wright of Union.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p. m. Wednesday at Mt. Hopewell Baptist Church in Sharon with Rev. Raymond David officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
