CONCORD, NC - Funeral services for Ann Lyerly Coleman, widow of Oscar Gene Coleman II, 75, of 46 Barbee Road, Concord, were conducted on Monday in Conord followed by burial in Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte.
Mrs. Coleman was an employee of Coleman's Greenhouse and a member of Broadus Memorial Baptist Church. She was born in Johnsonville, S. C., March 4, 1927, a daughter of the late Thomas D. Lyerly and Josie Altman Lyerly.
Surviving are two daughters, Nancy C. Mahan and husband, Michael, of Union and Vivian C. Freeman of Concord; a son, Oscar "Gene" Coleman III and wife, Victoria, of Midland, NC.; a sister, Nina L. Pope of Florence; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mark Thomas Coleman.

William M. Floyd, 85, of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, widower of Guindyln Floyd, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at 3:41 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a long illness.

Bertha M. Shelton

Bertha M. Shelton, 96, of 1527 Cross Keys Highway, died Sunday, March 31, 2002 at her home.
Born in Union County, Feb. 9, 1906, a daughter of the late Ferdinand Shelton and Lulu Shelton, she attended Union County schools and was a member of McBeth Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Louise Shelton, Elizabeth Shelton and Betty J. (James) Jeter,; a son, Ferdinand Shelton III of New York; 15 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 p. m. at McBeth Baptist Church by the Rev. T. D. Mauney. Burial will be in St. Paul Society Cemetery.

Edna Caskey Tillman

LANCASTER - Edna Caskey Tillman, 77, widow of Truman Tillman, died Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at the White Oak Manor in Rock Hill.
A daughter of the late Ira Webster and Della Blackmon Caskey Sr., she was born Aug. 13, 1924, in Lancaster. She was a member of the East Side Baptist Church and the Antioch Chapter #291 of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are three sons, Gerald Tillman and his wife Alice, Charles Tillman and his wife Sylvia and the Rev. Donald Tillman and his wife, Martha; three brothers, Ira W. Caskey Jr., James D. Caskey and Jack Caskey, all of Lancaster; two sisters, Pearl Phillips of Lancaster and Mary Pittman of Rock Hill; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Wayne Mathis; three brothers, Haskell B. Caskey, Edward L. Caskey and Alfred A. Caskey and a sister, Minnie L. Drye.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p. m. tonight at the Cauthen Funeral Home, Lancaster Chapel.

WHITMIRE - Robert David English, 71, of 194 Coleman Aughtry Road, died April 4, 2002 in the Laurens County Hospital.
He was born in Union County, a son of the late Doug and Ida Trammell English. Retried from construction welding, he was of the Baptist faith and a Korean Conflict Army veteran.
Surviving are: a son, Randall David English of Whitmire; four brothers, , Mack English and Tony English of Whitmire, Terry English of Union and Kenneth English of Whitmire; four sister, Nancy Brock, Kate Arrowood and Ruth Shields, all of Whitmire and Louise Blackwell of Clinton.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 3 p. m. in the Clinton Road Wesleyan Church with burial in Whitmire Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 p. m. at the Gray Funeral Home in Whitmire.

Elijah Gregory Jr.
Retired from Milliken
Elijah Gregory Jr., 75, of L&B Residential Care, Saluda, a former resident of Lockhart, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at 9:25 a.m. in the Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia after an extended illness.
Mr. Gregory was born in Lockhart on June 24, 1926, a son of the late Elijah Gregory Sr. and Maybell Cudd Gregory. He was of the Baptist faith and was formerly employed with Milliken & Company, Lockhart Plant.
Survivors include three sisters, Mary Virginia (Jennie) Parrish and Bertha Trammell, both of Leesville and Ann Randall of Union; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Gregory was predeceased by a sister, Pearl G. Ivie.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Gary Phillips. Burial will be in Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Mike Gregory, Dean Gregory, Brian Gregory, Bill Randall, Dale Shealey and Robert Shealey.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6-8.
The family is at the home of his nephew, Michael Gregory, 113 Poinsett St., Union.

Marion D. Mitchell

OROVILLE, Calif. - Marion Donald Mitchell, 65, of 3454 Oro Bangor Highway, died April 1, 2002, at his home after a period of declining health.
Mr. Mitchell was born in Union on April 24, 1936, the son of the late Sam and Ruby Parks Mitchell. He attended school in Union and served in the U.S. Air Force for several years. Mr. Mitchell was a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Oroville and was retired from the Department of Water Resources.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann Mitchell of the home; two daughters, Donna Mitchell of Union and Vicki Crawford of Yreka, Calif. two sisters and a brother-in-law, Jennie M. Sylvester and Ann M. and Rodney Lawson of Union; a niece, Robin Lawson of Union; his mother-in-law. Nell Bonham; three stepchildren and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at New Life Baptist Church in Union conducted by Dr. Clarence Adkins.
The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the memorial service.

ST. ALBANS, NY - Robert Jeter, husband of Hillary Jeter, formerly of Union, died April 4, 2002.
Among the survivors are: a brother, Larry Jeter of Union; sisters, Barbara Epps, Joyce Falls and Ethel Rice, all of Union.
Services will be held Monday evening at 8 p.m. in Jamaica NY.

Sara Bess Smith dies; was county magistrate
Union County Magistrate Sarah Bess McCollum Smith died Friday morning in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Smith, 72, of 162 Tom Kelly Circle, Carlisle, was the wife of Jesse Harold Smith.
Mrs. Smith was born in Newberry on Dec. 29, 1929, the daughter of the late John B. and Daisy Whitney McCollum. She was a graduate of Whitmire High School and attended Newberry College. She was retired as office manager with B&H Motors of Union.
She was a member of Carlisle United Methodist Church where she served as church treasurer and was a former member of the Carlisle Willing Workers. She was member of the Virginia Heath Bible Class of Grace United Methodist Church, a member of Clemson Extension, the Home and Garden Club, she was an active member of the Union Yellow Jackets Booster Club and served as a board member of the Salvation Army.
Chief Magistrate Charles Blackwell said Mrs. Smith was a credit to her profession.
"She did it according to the book and that is what it takes in this," he said. "She served this county with dignity and she was also a very attentive person; she listened to the people. She was undoubtedly one of the finest people I have ever met and one of the finest to work with. I never called on her for a favor that she wasn't willing to do it. That's really called working together."
Blackwell said Mrs. Smith had planned to retire at the end of April. He said Union County's legislative delegation will make a recommendation to Gov. Jim Hodges concerning her replacement.
Mrs. Smith was one of the original members of the Carlisle Willing Workers who formed to raise money to build a new sanctuary for Carlisle Methodist Church. The group served its first meal in November 1963. The congregation moved into the new church in 1976. Along the way, the Willing Workers built a name for themselves and established a successful catering service, preparing food for countless wedding rehearsals and receptions, birthday and anniversary parties, school functions, banquets and other events.
She was a loving mother and grandmother.
Surviving in addition to Mrs. Smith's husband are a daughter, Sarah Nichols Smith of Chapin; two sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny D. and Becky K. Smith of Atlanta, Ga., and Harold Whitney and Anita E. Smith of Carlisle; a sister, Bertice Teague of Whitmire; and eight grandchildren, Katherine M. Smith, Andrew W. Smith, DeWitt S. Smith and Zachary E. Smith, all of Atlanta, Ga., Carol J. Smith, Daniel L. Smith, Daisy W. Smith and Hannah S. Smith, all of Carlisle.
Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Carlisle United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Rebecca McPherson, the Rev. Carl Harris and the Rev. Willie Teague. Burial will be in the Ebenezer Cemetery in Maybinton.
Active pallbearers will be John David Teague, Charles Blackwell, Scott Cobb, Steve Cobb, Billy O'Daniel and Billy Thomas.
The following are asked to assemble at the church Sunday at 4:15 p.m. to form the honorary escort: All law enforcement officers in Union County and Union County magistrates.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 3:30 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service.
