Lula Mae Hardy Chick

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Mrs. Lula Mae Hardy Chick, 87, of 628 Pickford Place N.E., Washington, D. C., formerly of Whitmire, died April 1, 2002 at Providence Hospital in Washington.
Born in Union County Aug. 27, 1914, she was the daughter of the late James (Jim) and Fannie Mae Talley Hardy, she was a member of First Baptist Church of Marshall Height, Washington.
She was married to the late Willie Lee Chick and to this union five children were born. She was preceded in death by three sons, William, Arthur and Frank; two brothers, James and Tommy Hardy and a sister, Edmonia Morgan.
Surviving are: a daughter, Fannie Stroman of the home; a son, John Hardy Sr., of Maryland; four sisters, Daisy L. Henderson of Atlantic City, NJ, Donzell M. Rice of Whitmire; Elwillie Sims and Lois McClurkin, both of Union; an aunt, Gertrude B. Glenn of Whitmire; 12 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held this morning at First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights with burial in Washington, D. C.
Services were under the direction of Johnson and Jenkins Funeral Home of Maryland.

Marion Johnson Bobo, 97, died Monday, April 15, 2002 at 2 a.m. at an assisted living facility in Summerville. She was the widow of the Rev. John Landrum Bobo, who retired as pastor of First Baptist Church of Bishopville in 1965.
Mrs. Bobo was an active member of Philippi Baptist Church in Union, growing up and then later in retirement. She was born in Union County on Jan. 15, 1905. Her parents were the late William C. Johnson and Ann Meng Johnson. She attended Greenville Women's College and graduated from Southern Seminary in 1928.
Her daughter and son-in-law survive Mrs. Bobo, Carolyn and Wade Watson Sr. of Summerville; also surviving are three grandsons, Wade Watson Jr. of Savannah, Ga., and John and Timothy Watson of Columbia; and one great-grandson, Wade Watson III of Savannah, Ga.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery in Roebuck conducted by the Rev. Jim Oliver.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Building Fund of Philippi Baptist Church, 327 Philippi Church Road, Union, 29379.

Carrie Roberta Navy Carroll, 85, of 801 Barnado Road, widow of Jeff Augustus Carroll, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at 10:40 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness.
Mrs. Carroll was born in Kings Mountain, N.C., on Sept. 7, 1916, a daughter of the late John S. and Eva Navy. She attended Ottaray Baptist Church.
Survivors are three daughters, Ethel Hammett of Pacolet, Becky Davis and Jean Rubbenacker, both of Union; five sons, Coleman Carroll of Union, Tom Carroll of Campobello, Frank Carroll of Stoney Point, N.C., Steve Carroll of Spartanburg and Michael Carroll of Pauline; a sister, Helen Simmons of Wellford; 28 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
The family is at the home of her daughter, Becky and Larry Davis, 801 Barnado Road, Union.

John W. Coward
Recipient of two Purple Hearts
John W. Coward, 80, husband of Margaret Brown Coward, of 202 Westminister Circle, Union, died April 23, 2002, at 12:18 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness. Mr. Coward was born in Newberry on April 15, 1922, the son of the late James Lewis Coward and Edna Ballentine Coward. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and the Woodman of the World. Mr. Coward was a graduate of Union High School, was a Veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and was the recipient of two Purple Hearts. He was retired from Milliken & Co. after 51 years of service and was employed with Belk. Mr. Coward was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Susan Mitchum of Sumter and Janet Greene of Anderson; five grandchildren, Wesley Pellerin, Eric Mitchum, Lisa Marshel, Seth Greene and Clay Greene; and one great-grandson, Zachery Marshel. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Bethel United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Don Alexander and the Rev. Allen Senn. Burial with military honors will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Gene Crimminger, Steve Crocker, Jimmy Jolly, Mark Jolly, Paul Greer II and Eddie Hines. The following are asked to sit in a group: Members of the Bethel United Methodist Church Choir, members of the Young Adult Sunday School Class and members of the Men's Club. Voyd Bo Fincher Sr., 77, husband of Carrie Lee Hughes Fincher, of 305 Old Buffalo Road, died April 22, 2002, at home after an extended illness. Mr. Fincher was born March 25, 1925 in Union County, a son of Will and Addie Word Fincher. He was a textile worker and member of St. Luke Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, Voyd (Donna) Fincher Jr. of Clinton, William Earl Fincher of Florida and Harris Edward (Betty) Fincher of Union; a daughter, Dorothy Fincher Thomas of Union; six sisters, Rosa Lee Walker of Springfield Garden, NY; Elouise Tucker of Ramsey, NY; Addie Johnson of Clinton, Nina F. Gilliam of Buffalo, Penola Owens and Corine Glenn both of Union; 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; three brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law. Robert M. Buddy Johnson, 71, husband of Doris Jean Gault Johnson of 108 Bluebird Road, Union, died April 23, 2002, at 10:42 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Johnson was born in Asheville, N.C., on July 20, 1930, a son of the late Malcolm Robert Johnson and Ida Burr Evans Johnson. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the U.S. Army and was formerly employed with J.P. Stevens Company, Jonesville Plant. Mr. Johnson was of the Baptist faith. Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Catherine Johnson Varner of the home; two sisters, Ada Pat Keasler and Shirley J. Sanders, both of Union. Mr. Johnson was predeceased by three sisters and a brother, Edith Lee, Genevieve Allen, Margaret Amarillo and Cecil Johnson. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Carl Harris. Leatrice Littlejohn, 59, of Elm St., died at her home April 23, 2002. She was born in Jonesville on March 7, 1943, a daughter of the late Millus and Allie Littlejohn. She was a member Foster Chapel Baptist Church, the Gospel Chorus, Usher Board and the Sympathy Club. She was a certified nurses assistant. Surviving are a son, Daniel (Alfreda) Lindsay of Cowpens; daughters, Sadie (Johnny) Wade, Angela (Steven) Rice, Latonya Littlejohn and Denella (Billy Wayne) Smith, all of Jonesville; brothers, Motheria and Charles Littlejohn of Jonesville; Leeroy, Jessie and Marion, all of New York; Abraham Littlejohn of Trootwood, Ohio; sisters, Maggie and Juanita Littlejohn both of Dayton, Ohio and Luvenia Littlejohn of Jonesville; and 12 grandchildren. CLEARWATER, FLA. - James E. Jimmy Morris Jr., 53, husband of Judy Phillips Morris, of 15777 Bolesta Road, Clearwater, Fla., died April 23, 2002, in Largo Medical Center in Largo, Fla. Mr. Morris was born in Union on May 22, 1948, a son of Betty Satterfield Shaw of Largo, Fla., and James E. Skillet Morris Sr. of Union. He was a member of Bogansville United Methodist Church. Mr. Morris served as a medical clerk with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was self-employed in the heating and air conditioning business. Surviving in addition to his wife, mother and father are a daughter, Paula Morris of Spartanburg; a son, James E. Morris III of Clearwater, Fla.; three sisters, Elaine M. Lawson of Buffalo, Marion Sanders of Union and Kimberly Quinn of Florida; a brother, Robert Morris of Union; and special friends, Chuck Shaw of Largo, Fla., and Wallace Liner of Buffalo. Mr. Clack was born in Chester on Dec. 11, 1918, a son of the late Commadore Clack and Ella Ramsey Clack. He attended Chester County Schools and was retired from Springs Industries. In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, David Clack and Larry Clack , both of Chester, and Ronnie Clack of Winnsboro; three daughters, Ann Smith of Winnsboro, Linda Tucker of Union, and Janice Turpin of Chester; a brother, Cecil Clack of Chester; 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Roy Chandler Jolly Sr., 76, of 125 Toney Road, husband of Alice Ingle Jolly, died April 28, 2002, at 8:55 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Jolly was born in Union on Nov. 26, 1925, a son of the late Milton Humphries Jolly and Mattie Irene Young Jolly. He was a member of Hebron Baptist Church where he formerly served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and was counselor for the Royal Ambassadors for 19 years. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army as a S/Sgt. in the Philippines. He was a member of the Textile Baseball League and was known as Knuckle Ball. Mr. Jolly was retired plant supervisor for Bloomsburg Mill in Monroe, N.C. Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Joann Jolly Mills of Mooresboro, N.C., and Patty Jolly Coleman of Union; two sons, Roy C. Jolly Jr. of Greenville and Terry L. Jolly of Union; three sisters, Nell J. Crawford and Lillian J. Bentley, both of Union and Margaret J. Gregory of Delray Beach, Fla.; two brothers, Raymond Jolly and C.B. Jolly, both of Union; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mr. Jolly was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters. He attended Laurens High School and was formerly employed with Paragon Plastics. (Willie) Burnside of Mauldin and Rev. Thelma R. Prescott of Philadelphia, Pa.; two brothers, Odell (Charlotte) Thacker Jr. of New York City, N.Y.; and George (Sarah) Thacker of Philadelphia, Pa. GREENVILLE - Erastus Junior, J.R. Beard Jr., 74, of 102 Furman Road, Greenville, died April 30, 2002, at St. Francis Hosptial. Mr. Beard was born in Union, a son of the late Erastus Beard Sr. and Fannie Galloway Beard. He was a former milkman, textile supervisor, loom fixer/instructor, entrepreneur, owner of the Green Top service station and the Hamburger Shoppe Restaurant. Mr. Beard was also an income tax preparer, semi-retired in 1990 and retired in 1998. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Truth Missionary Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Irene Longshore Beard; daughters, Delores Dodie Crane and son-in-law, Lt. Col. Ret. USAF Lowell Crane of Dover, Delaware; Crystal Christy McCroskey and son-in-law, Rodger McCroskey of Greenville; a son, Lt. Col. USAF Barry Beard and daughter-in-law, Terry Beard of San Antonio, Texas; sisters, Ruby Teague of Asheville, N.C.; Elsie Weathers of Union, Marie Lindsey of Spartanburg and Betty Ann Briggs of Union; a brother Bobby Gene Beard of Anderson; and grandchildren, Chari Crane, Christen C.J.
