He was an owner-operator in the trucking industry, was a member of the VFW in McCormick and was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. Surviving are a daughter, Dee Dee Hale of Rio Rico, AZ.; a step-daughter, Gwen Holtzelaw of Greenwood; a brother, Irving Smith of Jonesville; two sisters, Avenelle Fannon and Dot Williams both of Jonesville; and a grandson, Daniel Boyd Hale of Charleston. BUFFALO - George Robert William Bill Griffith, 83, of 1105 Main St., Buffalo, widower of Agnes Evans Griffith, died May 3, 2002, at 1:30 a.m. in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after a period of declining health. Mr. Griffith was born in Buffalo on Dec. 23, 1918, a son of the late James Robert Griffith Sr. and Emma Ponder Griffith. He was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church, Duncan Masonic Lodge #256, Hejaz Shrine Temple, American Legion Post #87 and was a member of the Buffalo Men's Club. Mr. Griffith was a graduate of Union High School Class of 38 Specials. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and was a self-employed merchant, former owner and operator of Buffalo Cash and Carry. Surviving are two daughters, Emily Sue Priss Griffith of Union and Carol McGlocklin Johnson of Buffalo; three sons, Daniel L. McGlocklin of Buffalo, Robert William Bobby Griffith of Boiling Springs and James Marion Griffith of Covington, Va.; three sisters, Bernice Pruitt of Fairfax, Va., Agnes Wade of Charleston and Mary Emma Jarrett of Lenoir, N.C.; a brother, J.R. Griffith Jr. of Edgefield; a special buddy, William Sims; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Griffith was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Davis. Mrs. Payne was born in Petersburg, Va., Prince George County, on Aug. 2, 1918, a daughter of the late Raymond and Willie D. Abernathy Pitchford of Chester, Va. She was a member of the Enon Baptist Church of Chester, Va. Surviving are three daughters, Retha P. Duckett of Whitmire, Carolyn P. Moore of Eastman, Ga. and Barbara Pelter of Mineral, Va.; a sister, Vera P. Robertson of Richmond, Va.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The Rev. Charlie Edward Bells, 84, of 3474 Lockhart Highway, husband of Wilma Shrewsberry Bells, died at his home on Monday, May 6, 2002 at 8:15 p.m. after an extended illness. He was born in Mullins, West Va., on May 13, 1917, a son of the late Sammie and Cora Sizemore Bells. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the U.M.W.A He also worked at Dumute Steel in Chicago, Ill., and worked at Exxon gas stations in West Virginia. He was of the Free Will Baptist Faith and had spent 55 years in church work, pastoring several churches in West Virginia. After coming to South Carolina, he assisted with several churches in the Union area. He was the father of daughter, Ann, and son-in-law, Bud Hornsby of Union and daughter, Linda, and son-in-law David Allen of Flat Top, West Va.; four grandchildren, Andrea Kirchner of Rainbow Lake, Charles Hornsby of Union, Shannon Allen of Beaver, West Va. and Brad Allen of Shady Spring, West Va.; five sisters, Nellie Thompson of Mullins, West Va., Gracie Bolen and Ellen Belvins, both of Rhodell, West Va., Rosie Hatcher of Beckley, West Va., Laura Lester of Flat Top, West Va., and Ruby Garrison of Chicago, Ill.; two brothers, Ray Bells of Beckley, West Va., and Lawrence Bells of Ohio; and seven great-grandchildren. Margaret Pittman Pressly, 98, of 101 Merriman Ave., widow of Dr. Paul A. Pressly, died Monday, May 6, 2002 at 6 p.m. in Oakmont Nursing after a period of declining health. Mrs. Pressley was born in Union County on Oct. 13, 1903, a daughter of the late Rev. A.M. Pittman and Margaret Jeter Pittman. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where she taught in the church school for many years. Mrs. Pressly was a graduate of Winthrop College and taught in Gastonia, N.C., and Charlotte, N.C., schools for 12 years. She returned to Union where she met and married Dr. Paul A. Pressly and became his dental nurse. After his death in 1943, she resumed her teaching career and taught at Lockhart Elementary School for 18 years. Mrs. Pressly was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Pegi and Rick Lopez of Norwalk, Calif.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Paul A. and Becky Pressly of Overland Park, Kansas and John A. Pressly of Clark Hill; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, three nieces and a nephew. GREENVILLE - James Robert Jones Sr., 75, died May 6, 2002 at Hillcrest Hospital. A native of Spartanburg county, he was a son of the late Lucius Henry and Maude Lee Jones. He was retired from the railroad and was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II. Surviving are: his wife, Jean Jones of Simpsonville; two daughters, Rachael Watson of Greer and Sherry Jones of Gainesville, GA.; two sons, James R. Jones Jr. of Las Vegas, NV and Terry Jones of Lawrenceville, GA.; a brother, L. H. Jones of Union; four grandchildren. Services were held at 2 p.m. this afternoon at Graceland East Mausoleum conducted by Rev. Gene Turner. The Wood Mortuary Inc. had charge of the arrangements.

GAFFNEY - Ronald G. Ron Stallard, 63, of 248 Byars Farm Rd., Gaffney, husband of Edna McMurray Stallard, died May 5, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mr. Stallard was born in Coeburn, Va., a son of the late Maynard G. Stallard and Sallie Matilda Donahue Stallard. He was of the Baptist faith, was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was an engineer for WSPA television. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Judson (Dena) Meador of Union; a son, Michael Stallard of Spartanburg; a step-daughter, Wendy Allen of Greenwood; a sister, Freida Stallard of Hampton, Va.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg. Active pallbearers will be Winfred McMurray, Henry McMurray, Cliford Bledsoe, Collie Knox, Ben Meadow and Billy McMurray. Visitation will be Wednesday night from 7-9 at the funeral home. The family is at 418 Joe Eubanks Rd., Buffalo, and at 263 Drayton Trail, Gaffney. Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
