JONESVILLE - Thomas E. Bell, 43, of 323 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, Jonesville, died May 27, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Mr. Bell was born in Union County on Sept. 27, 1958, a son of Slyvester Good and Annie Ruth Rice Bell. He was employed with DHL Production Laboratories and a member of Wyatt's Chapel Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his mother and father are four sisters, Betty Gene Bates and Judy Ann Nord both of Boston, Mass.; Rosa Farnacci of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Mary Bell of Hartford, Conn.; three brothers, Bobby Bell of Jonesville, Robert Bell of Boston, Mass.; and Joe Bell of Roxberry, Mass.; and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mark Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. T. Jackson. Burial will be in the Wyatt's Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service. Wake services will be held Saturday from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Viewing and visitation will be Saturday from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. The family is at the home of his brother, Bobby Bell, 323 Jonesville-Lockhart Hwy., Jonesville. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of arrangements.
Francis Earl Crosby
Retired from Cone Mills
Francis Earl Crosby, 78, of 901 West Main St., widower of Margaret (Margie) Price Crosby, died in Wallace Thomson Hospital, May 30, 2002, at 10:15 p.m. after an extended illness.
Mr. Crosby was born in Union on April 9, 1924, a son of the late J. Claude and Lillie Clay Crosby, and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church and was retired from Cone Mills, Carlisle Finishing Plant.
Mr. Crosby is survived by his cousin, Mrs. Tom (Carol) Coffer of Union; and a sister-in-law, Miss Ruth Price of Union. Graveside services will be conducted by the Rev. Bobby Crocker at Union Memorial Gardens on Saturday at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends at the graveside immediately following burial.

Miles A. Fleming Sr.

Miles Arthur Fleming Sr., 82, of 100 Tillman St., Union, husband of Nancy Knox Fleming, died May 28, 2002, at 9:19 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Fleming was born in Union on May 11, 1920, a son of the late Gilbert Shea Fleming and Eva Farley Fleming.
He was a member of the Union Church of Christ. Mr. Fleming was a retired textile employee. Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Donna Zelano of Union, Cynthia Baldwin of Lockhart and Nancy Jane Schreiber of Baltimore, Md.; two sons, Keith Fleming of Union and Miles Arnold Fleming of Buffalo; three stepsons, David Jenkins, Ricky Jenkins and Timothy Jenkins, all of Union; six sisters, Lula Mae Tabaczynskie and Lee Ila Sanders, both of Chesapeake, Va., Betty Lea of Charleston, Miriam (Pat) Vince and Lois Gregory, both of Virginia Beach, Va., and Georgia Rose Fleming of Los Angeles, Calif.; a brother, Robert V. Fleming of Raleigh, N.C.; 17 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.
Mr. Fleming was predeceased by a brother, James I. Fleming. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by Chaplain Ray Freeman, the Rev. Bill Yount and the Rev. Joe Blalock. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Michael Fleming, Randy Fleming, Keith Kriby, Colton Zelano, Robbie Fleming and Chad Foster. ROCK HILL - Janice Louise Grossnickle Myers, 59, of 1697 Huntmoor Dr., Rock Hill, died May 29, 2002, at Piedmont Medical Center. Mrs. Myers was a native of Myersville, Maryland, a daughter of the late Paul Grossnickle and Jennie Frushour Grossnickle.
She was employed with Clover School District 2 Board Office. Mrs. Myers was a member of Pikeside United Methodist Church in Martinsburg, West Virginia, and was a member of the York Shag Club.
Surviving are her husband, Floyd H. Myers; two sons, Doug Myers and David (Stacey) Myers of Rock Hill; a daughter, Debbie (Michael) Albright of Inwood, W. Va.; sisters, Dorotha Smith of Smithburg, Md. and Kathleen Needy of Hagerstown, Md.; and three grandchildren, Tara Albright, Nicholas Myers and Nathan Myers.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral chapel by the Rev. John Williams. Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday night from 7-8:30 at the funeral home, 2133 Ebenezer Rd., Rock Hill and other times at the home. TAYLORS - Mark Steven Grubbs, 44, of 5 Collinwood Lane, Taylors, husband of Cindy Perry Grubbs, died May 30, 2002, at his home.

Roxie R. Crawford

ATHENS, GA. - Roxie Reid Crawford, widow of Luther J. Crawford, died June 1, 2002, at Athens Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Crawford was the daughter of the late Walter A. and Anna Wilson Reid.
She was born on Dec. 1, 1929, in Union and moved to Athens, Ga. in 1992 from Statesville, N.C. where she lived for 23 years. She was a clerical secretary until her retirement in 1980, and recently worked as a receptionist for A Flair with Hair.
Mrs. Crawford was a member of Beech Haven Baptist Church, the Christine Jenkins Sunday School Class, and was active in the Christian Women's Club before her illness. She was a member of IPTAY for over 30 years and loved the Clemson Tigers.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda, and son-in-law, David Dean; a son, Ronald Jay, and daughter-in-law, Amanda Crawford all of Bogart, Ga.; a daughter, Susan and Scott Seitz of James Island; grandchildren, Jami Prouty of Augusta, Ga.; Dana Gibson of Dacula, Ga.; Michelle Doolittle of Watkinsville, Ga.; and Jonathan Crawford, Staci Crawford, Roxie Dean and Allison Melancon of Bogart, Ga. Her great-grandchildren, Lindsey and Natalie Prouty, Kendall Doolittle, Chase and Avery Gibson and Cole and Anna Mclancon were her pride and joy; three sisters, Eleanor Babb of Bishopville, Virginia Smith and Martha Price of Union; a brother, Carl Reid of Clifton, N.J.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home West by Dr. Stewart Simms. Graveside services and burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens at 5 p.m. by the Rev. Charles Mitchell. Visitation will be tonight from 6:30-9 at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home West.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Jonathan Crawford, and grandsons-in-law, Ted Gibson, Michael Prouty, Michael Doolittle, Rusty Mclancon and nephew, Perrin Babb. The family will be at the home of her daughter, Linda Dean, where Mrs. Crawford previously lived before moving to Lanier Gardens-Talmadge. JONESVILLE - Austell Eison, 55, of 332 Mt. Joy Church Road, Jonesville, died May 31, 2002 at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Born in Union County on Feb. 18, 1947, he was the son of the late Gaines and Armentha Eison.
He attend Union County schools and was a retired mechanic. Surviving are five daughters, Connie Eison of the home, Charita (Alvery) Walton, Mamie Hardy, Jackie Hardy, all of Union, and Latrisha Hardy; four sons, Carl Eison and Carl Harris of the home; Kenny (Nicole) Brandon of Union and Travis Hardy; three sisters, Minnie R. Porter of Jonesville, Linda (Bobby) Glenn of Union, and Brenda (Randy) Smith of Spartanburg; five brothers, Bishop (Georgia) Eison, James (Louise) Eison, Monty Eison, and Frank Bryant, all of Jonesville and Wallace (Elaine) Means; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday 2 p.m. at Bethany A.M.E. Church conducted by Rev. Christopher Nelums. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Ann Gunning Henderson, 84, of Oakmont, died June 1, 2002, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Born in Swain County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late John and Annie Gunning.
She was married for 53 years to Carl L. Henderson, who predeceased her in 1991. Mrs. Henderson was employed by Ottaray and Monarch Mills and was a member of the Church of Christ in Union.
Surviving are her children, Ronald L. Henderson of Macungie, Pa. and Brenda Palmer of Union; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held tonight at 6 at the Church of Christ in Union by Brother Curtis Gilbert. Memorials may be made to her church. Woodlawn Funeral Home Greenville, has charge of arrangements.
Woodrow W. Ward
World War II veteran
Woodrow (Woody) Wilson Ward, 80, husband of Patricia Cannon Ward, of 203 Barron St., died June 2, 2002, in the William Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Hospital in Columbia after a period of declining health.
Mr. Ward was born in Hendersonville, N.C. on Oct. 22, 1921, a son of the late Arthur Ward Sr. and Nora Summey Ward. He was a member of the Union Church of Christ. Mr. Ward was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II.
He was a life-member of the VFW and a life-member and volunteer driver with the DAV. Mr. Ward was a retired service technician with Freeman Gas Co. Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Nora Mae Sandlin of Texas; a son, Bobby Ward of Union; two step-sons, Jacob Critchlow of Buffalo and David Critchlow of the home; three sisters, Lib Brown of Waterloo, Laura Grady of Clinton and Faye Henderson of Columbia; a brother, John (Pie) Ward of Union; three grandchildren, Ward Sandlin, Donald Sandlin and Robert Ward; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by Brother Jesse Ham and Brother Ronnie Tripp. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dorn Vanc Volunteer Services, 6439 Garners Ferry Rd., Columbia, SC 29201-1639.

WHITMIRE - David Meredith (Meck) Whitener Sr., 52, of Sims Dr., Whitmire, died June 1, 2002, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Whitener was born in Union County on Jan. 1, 1950, a son of the late Arthur and Susie D. Whitener. He received his education in the public schools of Union County and was a former employee of Chrysler in Detroit, Mich.
Surviving are two sons, Michael (Elaine) Harp of Columbia and David Meredith Whitener Jr. of Whitmire; seven grandchildren, Michelle, D'Angelo, MicQuell, Star, Isis, Jaylia and Kenya; five brothers, Luke Hayes (Demetrius) Whitener of Washington, D.C.; Willie (Dorothy) Whitener of Whitmire, John Lewis (Peggy) Whitener of Greenville, Douglas (Ernestine) Whitener of Pomaria, and Harold (Patricia) Whitener of Washington, D.C.; and four sisters, Hannah W. Titus of Detroit, Mich.; Della W. McKinney of Greenville, Annie W. Clark and Geneva W. (Coley) Jeter of Whitmire. Mr. Whitener was predeceased by his wife, Elaine C. Whitener and a son, Brian Keith Whitener.

James H. Laurens

James Henry (Jim) Laurens, 70, husband of Helen Murray Laurens, of 110 Hidden Hill Rd., died June 4, 2002, at 1 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.
Mr. Laurens was born in Spartanburg on Sept. 1, 1931, a son of the late James Henry Laurens and Ada Kirby Laurens. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the Methodist Men's Club and a member of the Union Rotary Club.
Mr. Laurens was a graduate of Spartanburg High School and Wofford College. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a retired yarn salesman for Mt. Vernon Mills and United Merchants.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Susan Laurens McLain of Round Rock, Texas; a son, Jay Laurens of Salisbury, N.C.; three sisters, Elizabeth Charles of Greenville, Mardge Shurbutt of Garden City and Patsy Miller of Myrtle Beach; and six grandchildren, Hill McLain and Adam McLain both of Round Rock, Texas; Drew Laurens and Matt Laurens, Ashley Laurens and Harley Laurens all of Salisbury, N.C.
Mr. Laurens was predeceased by a sister and a brother, Mary Pruitt and Darrell Laurens. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church by the Rev. Gary Byrd.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Dr. David Keith, Dr. Russell Caston, Don Winslow, Elwood Eason, Marvin Bettis and Jack Eversman.
The following are asked to assemble at the church Thursday at 10:45 a.m. to form the honorary escort: John Heath, Keith Bailey, Carl Beck, T.C. Wylie, Jack Rash, Bob Gist, Maurice Cordell and Harold Simmons.
