The widower of Flora Coker Berry, he was born in Union County on Dec. 28, 1915, the son of Dr. Robert Reid Berry and Sarah Jane Palmer.
He was honored by the Union Salvation Army in April of this year for 49 years of service. During that time he served as chairman, vice chairman and more recently, as treasurer, of the Salvation Army Board.
At the awards ceremonies, Major Mark Bell, the Salvation Army's general secretary, said in addition to serving in leadership positions Berry also recruited bell ringers at Christmas time and rung the bell himself in addition to helping with other Christmas programs like the Angel Tree and the food drive.
"Mr. Berry is a pillar of the Union community," Bell said. "His support of the Army and its programs by association gets the support of the whole community."
As quarterback of the Clemson College football team under Coach Frank Howard, Berry set a school record in his senior year of passes completed that stood for 48 years until being broken by Mike Eppley in 1984.
During his career at Clemson he was named to the All South Carolina Teams in 1935 and 1936 and in his senior year was a unanimous choice for the team. After the war he and his brother, James, joined their brother, Pinckney, in Union. The brothers founded Berry Builder Mart on North Church Street and later he and James, started Union Homes, a manufactured home business.
In 1996 the business was relocated to its present site on the Old Buffalo Road near the intersection of the Duncan By-Pass. Berry served on the Union County Board of School Trustees for 28 years, including ten years as its chairman. The vocational building at Union High School is named for him.

He also served as president of the Carolina Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association, located in North and South Carolina.
He was an Elder Emeritus of First Presbyterian Church having served for more than 40 years and taught the Young Couple's Sunday School Class that was known as the J. N. Berry Class for some 30 years. In an interview with the Union Daily Times in May of 1999, Berry said, "I never wanted to live anywhere else other than Union and I still don't. People have been good to us."
