Fred Robert Small, 82, of 123 Kelly Rd., widower of Helen Marie Tucker Small, died at the home of his son at 231 Byrd St., June 27, 2002, at 11:50 p.m. after an extended illness. Mr. Small was born in Arkadelphia, Ark. on June 1, 1920, a son of the late Nathaniel Barber Small and Emma Foster Small.
He was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church. Mr. Small was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and was retired owner and operator of Small's Salvage.
Surviving are three daughters, Brenda Trammell of Laurens, Linda Small of Union and Paulette Trammell of Clinton; four sons, Ronnie Small, Robert Small and Kenneth Small all of Union and Danny Small of Los Angeles, Calif.; a brother, Charles Small of Union; three sisters, Judy Prince and Frances Eldridge both of Whitmire and Jane Freeman of Union; 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Mr. Small was predeceased by a son, Fred Small Jr.; a sister, Ruth Gregory; and two brothers, Nathaniel B. Small Jr. and James Small. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9. The family is at the home of his son, Ronnie Small, 231 Byrd St., Union, and at the home of his son, Robert Small, 1818 Jonesville Hwy., Union.
Memorials may be made to the Union County Cancer Services, c/o Ola Jean Kelly, 117 Fant Lane, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Sadie Lane Smith
Sadie Pauline Lane Smith, 79, of 1453 Sardis Road, wife of Douglas Smith, died June 27, 2002, in the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Mrs. Smith was born in Union on December 27, 1922, a daughter of the late Jacob Bert Lane Sr. and Annie Bell Hyder Lane.
She was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church, the Virginia Smith Sunday School Class and was a member of the Tabernacle Rhythm Band. She was retired from Conso Products.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Mary S. Hailman of Charleston; a son, John Douglas Smith of Charleston; a sister, Ada Lane Hall of Union; three brothers, James Lane, J.B. Lane and Harold Lane all of Union; five grandchildren, Troy Douglas Smith, Buffie G. Smith, Holly H. Robertson and LaPaula H. Williams, all of Charleston and Carrie H. Wolfe of Charlotte, N.C.; and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Smith was predeceased by a daughter, Jane Carol Smith; a sister, Mabel Adams; and four brothers, Ernest Lane, Guy Lane, Hampton Lane and Paul Lane. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Barry Ellis and Rev. Ralph Brown. Burial will be in Sardis United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Donald Ray Lane, Tommy Lane, Freddie Lane, Billy West, Dean Jones, Marshall Adams, Scott Lane, Eddie Paul Lane, and Kenneth Adams. The following are asked to assemble at the church Saturday at 10:45 a.m. to form the honorary escort: Al Smith, Joe Willard, Dr. Tom Young, Dr. Jeffrey Craft, Jim Palmer, Paul Greer Sr., John Bradburn, Rev. John Hayes, Brown Fant, James Copeland, Jerry Sweatt, Don Shetley, and Robbie Jones.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 1453 Sardis Road, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
James O. Gallman
FLAT ROCK, N.C. - James Olin (Jimmy) Gallman, 73, of 1027 Blue Ridge Road, husband of Sara Latham Gallman, both former residents of Union, died June 29, 2002, at 7:50 a.m. in the Brian Center in Hendersonville, N.C., after an extended illness.
Mr. Gallman was born in Union on April 19, 1929, the son of the late Olin and Julia James Gallman. He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville, N.C. Mr. Gallman was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was formerly manager of Arthur Store in Lockhart and was a retired store manager with Community Cash for 40 years.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three sisters, Betty Silva of Pleasanton, Calif.; Judy Penington and Rapsy D'Incognito, both of Hayward, Calif.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Jim Phillis, the Rev. Don Taws and the Rev. John Fain. Burial will be in the Gallman Cemetery.
Nephews will be active pallbearers. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. today. The family is at their respective homes. Memorials may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2101 Kanuga Road, Hendersonville, N.C., 28739. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
David J. Graham
David Jolly (Wad) Graham, 40, of 2311 Lockhart Highway, died June 28, 2002, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Mr. Graham was born in Union on Aug. 28, 1961, a son of Nelson (Nub) Graham of Union and the late Leila Jolly Graham.
He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Mr. Graham was a 1979 graduate of Union High School and was formerly employed with Wallace Thomson Hospital. Surviving in addition to his father are two brothers, Bob Graham and Chris Graham, both of Union; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Austin Bennett, Rev. Benny Green and the Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Tim Robinson, Mike Phillips, Ronnie Green, Michael Putnam, Reece Stewart, Dennis Sinclair, Donnie Reynolds, Glenn Palmer and Darrel Fisher. The following are asked to assemble at the church Tuesday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Donnie Green, Charley Hughes, Olin Lee, Freddie Vanderford, Steve Cavender and Mike Kitchens.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6:30-9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 2311 Lockhart Highway, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
Reba S. Murphy
Reba Sanders Murphy, 86, of 109 Pine St., wife of Harold B. Murphy, died June 29, 2002 in Oakmont Residential after an unexpected illness. Mrs. Murphy was born in Union on Dec. 25, 1915, a daughter of the late W.T. Sanders and Cleora Gallman Sanders.
She was a member of Unity United Methodist Church but attended First Baptist Church where she worked with the church nursery for many years. Mrs. Murphy was a graduate of Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing and was a retired registered nurse with Hope Hospital in Lockhart for 25 years and was a member of the Nurses Club.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a sister, Mrs. Marshall (Juanita) Comber of Union; a brother, Carroll Sanders of Jonesville; a special friend, Mrs. David (Jimmie Ruth) Gibson of Union; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Murphy was predeceased by a sister and three brothers, Mrs. Coonie (Will Lena) Kirby, Edwin Sanders, Curtis Sanders and Manning Sanders.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Clayton Howerton. Burial was in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers were R.D. Murphy, Billy Comer, Hubert Sanders, Robert Murphy, Tommy Sanders and Hugh Sanders. Dr. Robert Wentz and the staff at Hope Hospital were asked to sit in a group.
The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday from 6-7:30 p.m. and was placed in the church at 10 a.m. today to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her niece, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Lawson, 218 Harwood Heights, Union.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Piano Fund at Unity United Methodist Church, 206 Hart St., Union; or to First Baptist Church, 405 East Main St., Union, 29379; or to the Connie Maxwell Children's Home, P.O. Box 1178, Greenwood, 29648. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.
Jermaine Hughes
Jermaine Brandon Davis Hughes, infant son of Jennifer Davis and Roland Hughes II, of 107 Tillman St., died at his home at an early hour July 1, 2002. Jermaine was born in Spartanburg on April 5, 2002.
Surviving in addition to his parents are two brothers, his twin brother, James David Hughes of the home and Timothy Smith of Union; a sister, Kayla Moore of the home; his maternal grandparents, Melanie and Wesley Lawson of Jonesville; maternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Davis of Union; his paternal grandfather, Roland Hughes II and Carolyn Sims of Union.
Jermaine was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Derrell Davis and paternal grandmother, Clara Hughes. The family is at the home, 107 Tillman St., Union. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Ricky E. Kirby
SIMPSONVILLE - Ricky Eugene Kirby, 47, of 9 Woodmore Court, died June 29, 2002, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on June 14. Mr. Kirby was born in Union, a son of B.E. (Coonie) Kirby Jr. of Union and the late Will Lena Sanders Kirby. He was the minister of music at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Fountain Inn and served as director of Joyful Sound at North Greenville College for 15 years.
In addition, he served full time previously at Liberty First Baptist Church in Liberty, Reedy River Baptist Church in Travelers Rest and Rock Springs Baptist Church in Easley.
Surviving in addition to his father are his wife, Rebecca Manley Kirby; two daughters, Karla Rebekah and Kelly Elisabeth Kirby, both of the home; a sister and her husband, Phyllis and Rick Jeffcoat of Simpsonville; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7-8:30 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Tony Beam, the Rev. Mike Landrum, the Rev. David Gallamore and the Rev. Scott Stancil, will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Internment, conducted by the Rev. Paul Fleming and the Rev. Gerald Martin, will be at Graceland East Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Cranford, David Cooley, Tim Vaughan, Kevin Nichols, David Austin, Steve Crowe, Eddie Cleveland, James Coffer, Mayson Easterling and Buddy Freeman.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Toby Dix, Jeff Dean, Tim Huey, Shane Martin, Brent Martin, Scott Ayers, Tommy Crocker, Travis Dix and Bryan Ray.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Joyful Sound, North Greenville College, 7801 North Tigerville Road, Tigerville, S.C., 29687; or to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 1279 South Frontage Road, Fountain Inn, 29644. The family is at the home. Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown, in Greenville has charge of the arrangements.
