Anne W. Collins
Began Alateen Program

Ethel Anne Whiting Collins, 65, of 119 Newport Dr., widow of James Marvin Collins, died at her home July 2, 2002, at 7:25 p.m. after an extended illness. Mrs. Collins was born in Union on Oct. 19, 1936, a daughter of the late E.O. (O'Dell) Whiting and Pearl Pennington Whiting.

She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, a member of AGLOW-Christian Women's Group and was responsible for starting the Alateen Program in Union County.

Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Joey (Kathy) Allison, Mrs. Jim (Angie) Vaughan and Mrs. Charles (Lisa) Chapman all of Union; a son, Stephen Zachary Collins of Union; four sisters, Mrs. Bobby (Marilyn) Bright, Mrs. Roger Sara (Butchie) Wade and Mrs. Herbie (Penny) Smith all of Union and Donna Ward of Columbia; six grandchildren, Brandon Allison, Alyssa Allison, Nikki Robinson, Rusty Smith, Ashley Chapman and Dylan Chapman; and a great-granddaughter, LeAnne Moore.

Mrs. Collins was predeceased by a son, James Collins and a grandson, Hunter Chapman. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church by the Rev. Tommy Liming and Rev. Barry Ellis. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Jackie Vaughan, Kevin Smith, Monty Vaughan, Danny Bright, Tony Horne and Cyle Cohen. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6:30-8:30 and will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Thursday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home, 119 Newport Dr., Union. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 154 Milestone Way, Greenville, SC 29615, or to Hospice of South Carolina, 432 B, North Duncan By-Pass, Union, or to the Tabernacle Baptist Church, 915 S. Pinckney St., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Jermaine Hughes

Jermaine Brandon Davis Hughes, infant son of Jennifer Davis and Roland Hughes III, of 107 Tillman St., died at his home at an early hour July 1, 2002. Jermaine was born in Spartanburg on April 5, 2002.

Surviving in addition to his parents are two brothers, his twin brother, James Davis Hughes of the home and Timothy Smith of Union; a sister, Kayla Moore of the home; his maternal grandparents, Melanie and Wesley Lawson of Jonesville; his maternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Davis of Union; his paternal grandfather, Roland Hughes II and Carolyn Sims of Union. Jermaine was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Derrell Davis and paternal grandmother, Clara Hughes.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Stephen C. Johnson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Friday from 12:30-2 p.m.

The family is at the home, 107 Tillman St., Union. Memorials may be made to the Jermaine Brandon Davis Hughes Fund, PO Box 293, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Kyle Wofford

Kyle Wofford, 7 weeks old, of 1916 Whitmire Highway, son of Pernell Wofford and Pamela Crosby Wofford, died July 2, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Kyle was a native of Union County.

Surviving in addition to his parents are two sisters, Brandi Garner and Brooke Garner both of the home; paternal grandmother, Jacquelin Crosby of Union and paternal grandfather, Willie Crosby of Gaffney.

The family is at the home. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by J.W. Woodward Funeral Home.

Fletcher Johnson
Retired

AURORA, ILL. - Fletcher Johnson, 78, of Aurora, Ill., died July 1, 2002, in Illinois. Mr. Johnson was born in Carlisle on Sept. 18, 1924, a son of the late Willie and Rebecca Sims Johnson. He was a retired fairground attendant.

Surviving are a daughter, Barbara A. Miller of Spartanburg; seven sisters, Lettie A. Gibson of Santuck, Lorretta Sims of Detroit, Mich.; Vonnie Johnson of Chicago, Ill.; Ross Tucker of Santuck, Mary Tucker, Gloria Jeter and Alice P. McBeth all of Carlisle; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-7 p.m. The family is at the home, 2278 Santuc-Carlisle Highway, Union. Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Austin F. Littlejohn
Retired from Milliken

Austin Franklin Little-john, 92, husband of 63 years to Lucille Vaughan Little-john, of 1417 Lockhart Hwy., died at his home, July 5, 2002, after a period of declining health. Mr. Littlejohn was born in Cherokee County on April 25, 1910, a son of the late Walton Stafford and Lelia Evans Littlejohn.

He was retired from Milliken and Company after 50 years of service. He was a mason for over 60 years and was the catcher for the Monarch Baseball Team of 1937 which won the State Trophy. Mr. Littlejohn was a lifetime member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church where he was a former RA leader, training union director, and was a member of the choir.

Mr. Littlejohn is the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas A. and Kay Littlejohn of Union and Gene and Linda Littlejohn of Baytown, Texas; and three grandchildren, Andrea Littlejohn, Marlon Littlejohn and Crystal Littlejohn. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church by the Rev. Benny Green and Rev. Dale Lynch. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6-7:30 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mon-Aetna Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 72, Union. The family will be at the home of his son, Thomas A. Littlejohn, 1424 Lockhart Hwy., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Lawrence Richardson Jr.
Chester native

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Lawrence Bedford Richard-son Jr., 77, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., died June 24, 2002, at Missouri Veterans Home. Mr. Richardson was born Jan. 21, 1925 in Chester, a son of the Lawrence B. and Mildred Robbins Richardson Sr.

He was in the U.S. Navy from June 20, 1942 to Jan. 23, 1946, and served aboard the USS Joseph Stanton and the USS Barazen. He was awarded the American Area Medal, European African Mideast Area Medal and Victory Medal. Mr. Richardson was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Cape Girardeau.

Surviving are a son, Larry Richardson of Santa Clara, Utah; a daughter, Brenda LaVette of Valley Center, Calif.; a brother, Bill Richardson of Cape Girardeau; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Richardson was predeceased by a brother, Melvin R. Richardson. Funeral services were held in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Announcement courtesy of the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Rufus W. Johns
Retired from Milliken

Rufus Wagner Johns, 88, widower of Dorothy Whiteside Johns, of 1103 Thompson Blvd., died July 7, 2002, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Johns was born in Union on March, 3, 1914, a son of the late Rufus Norman and Cora Lancaster Johns.

He was a graduate of Union High School and Drawnes Business College. Mr. Johns was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Johns of Union; two sons, Johnny Johns of Atlanta and Robert Johns of Prosperity; one sister, Elizabeth Johns of the home; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church by Rev. Gary Byrd. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Ricky Harris, Bruce Sparks, Donald Henderson, Tommy Whitesides, Hay Fant Sparks, and Jimmy O'Dell.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Tuesday at 10:45 a.m. to form the honorary escort: Dr. T.C. Wylie, Dr. Bobby Rippy, Dr. Jeff Craft, Dr. Robert Yannetti, Walt Mitros, Bruce Huggins and Willie Harris.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 and will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service.

Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 201 S. Church Street, Union, S.C. 29379. The family is at the home, 1103 Thomson Blvd., Union, S.C. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Eva P. Kirby
Member of Women's Bowling League

EDMONDS, WASH. - Eva Katherine Pederson Kirby, 86, widow of Nesbitt Kirby of Edmonds, Wash., died July 6, 2002, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness.

Mrs. Kirby was born in Tacoma, Wash. on April 6, 1916, a daughter of the late August and Bessie Marion Seely Pederson. She was an active member of the Paradise Village Bowl Women's Bowling League for 24 years.

Surviving are four daughters, Marion Birch of Buffalo, Shirley Moreno of Reno, NV.; Barbara Blank of Tucson, Ariz.; and Kathy Crosser of Edmonds, Wash.; a son, Robert Olson of Arlington, Texas; a sister, Alice Sherman of Edmonds, Wash.; 24 grandchildren; and a number of great and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today at 3 p.m. at the Union Church of God by Rev. Alton Stone. Burial will be held in Edmonds, Wash. Active pallbearers will be the following grandsons: Jason McAbee, Nathan Sinclair, David Walters, Shane Wix, Shawn Jones and Brandon Sinclair.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. today where the family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. The family is at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Marion and Harold Birch, 131 Dana Tara Lane, Buffalo. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
