Pauline Willard Stepp, 91, of 132 Stepp Road, widow of Ray D. Stepp, died July 18, 2002, at University Hospital in Augusta, Ga., after an extended illness.
Mrs. Stepp was born in Union County on Aug. 28, 1910, a daughter of the late John and Bernice Wright Willard. She was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church and was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant.
Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Beatrice Vaughan James of North Augusta and Mary S. and W.J. Scales of Union; two sons, Richard Stepp of North Augusta and W. Ralph Stepp of Union; a sister, Leona Moss of Tulsa, Okla.; 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Mrs. Stepp was predeceased by a daughter and a son, Vivian Gossett and Carl Stepp. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Aulbrey Calvert and Rev. Jimmy Coyle.
Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Rick Riddle, Paul Baldy, Steve Lawson, Steve Ham, Gene Pardue, Martin Ford, Russell Smith, Calvin Williams and Roger Johnson. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service.
The family is at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and W.J. Scale, 1132 Meansville Road, Union. Memorial may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, S.C. 29605. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Mary Sparks Bell
Mrs. Mary Ferol Sparks Bell, 74, widow of John Bell of 217 Old English Road, Union, died at her home Friday, July 19, 2002, at 6:15 a. m. after an extended illness.
Mrs. Bell was born in Union on Jan. 24, 1928, a daughter of the late Charles and Mary Mayo Sparks. She was a member of the Morningside Baptist Church and was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant.
Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Dennis Gregory, Janice and Glenn Smith, all of Union and Donna and Joe Peclet of Simpsonville; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Lisa Bell of Jonesville; a sister, Betty Lou Fowler of Union; a brother, Charles Harold Sparks of Laurens; three grandchildren, Crystal Boulware, Todd Smith and Ashley Tyler all of Union and eight great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Bell was predeceased by a grandson, Michael Ingle. Funeral services will be held 3 p. m. Sunday at Morningside Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Eddie Saxon. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Colon Duckett, Jimmy Lightner, Lawrence Burgess, Randy Cannon, Marion McAbee and Woody Waldrop. The following are asked to assemble at the church Sunday at 2:45 p. m. to form the honorary escort: Dr. Gerald D. Fielder, Jackie Walton and Lloyd Lawson.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 p. m. and will be placed in church at 2 p. m. Sunday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 217 Old English Road, Union. The S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Robert Alexander
WHITMIRE - Robert William Alexander, 64, of 191 Old U.S. 176, Whitmire, died July 21, 2002, at 7:55 p.m. at the home of his son, Tim Alexander, 215 Browning Road, Enoree, after an extended illness.
Mr. Alexander was born in Union County on July 14, 1938, a son of the late Fred J. and Mattie Whitlock Alexander. He was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church and was a dry wall contractor.
Surviving are two sons, Tim Alexander and Randy Alexander, both of Enoree; a sister, Margaret Silvers of Whitmire; a brother, Dean Alexander of Jonesville and three grandchildren. Mr. Alexander was predeceased by two brothers, Fred J. Alexander Jr. and Jackie L. Alexander.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Bethesda Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Steve Young. Burial will be in the Lee Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7-9 and will be placed in church at 2 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service.
The family is at the home, 191 Old U.S. 176, Whitmire. Memorials may be made to Vista Care, 4006 E. North Street, Suite A., Greenville, S.C. 29615. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Rose Anne Crocker
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Rose Anne Crocker, 91, widow of Harold Crocker, of New Rochelle, N.Y., died July 18, 2002. Mrs. Crocker was born in Trenton, N.J. on April 8, 1911, a daughter of the late Mauro and Agnes Russo DiNapoli.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Crocker attended New Rochelle Schools before staying with relatives in Staten Island and graduated from Curtis High School in 1928. She received a business course degree from Washington School in New Rochelle.
Mrs. Crocker worked in the family store when she met Harold Crocker from Union, who was in the Army stationed at Fort Slocum in New Rochelle during World War II. She and Harold met while she was a volunteer for the Red Cross which cooked spaghetti dinners for the troops at the USO on Lecount Place.
They were married at the Chapel on Fort Slocum in March 1946. The Crockers lived in Union for a short time after the war and returned to New Rochelle in the late 1940s. They had a son, Harold Jr. in 1951.
Mrs. Crocker was a New Rochelle Girl Scout leader for many years and also a Boy Scout Mom for Troop 13 in New Rochelle. She began working for the City School District of New Rochelle in the mid 1950s as a PT Food service worker. She advanced to a full-time worker and then to the Food Service Manager and was the Cafeteria Manager for many years until she advanced to the Director of Cafeterias for the City School District of New Rochelle.
She was the Summer Program Cafeteria Director at Mount Tom Day Camp for almost 20 years. She was one of the founders of the New Rochelle High School Football Mom's and Dad's Club in 1967.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Harold Jr. and Diane of South Salem; two grandchildren, Jillian and Sean Crocker; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary C. and Bill Arthur of Union; two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Rev. Bobby Crocker of Union and Rev. James Crocker and Vera Crocker of Boiling Springs; and many nieces and nephews in New York and South Carolina.
A Funeral Mass was held Monday in New Rochelle by the Lloyd Maxcy and Sons Funeral Home. Local funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Ottaray Baptist Church by the Rev. Bobby Crocker and Rev. James Crocker. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Freddie Shirley, O'Neil Crocker, Larry Crocker, Billy Wade, Thomas Wade and Bill O'Dell. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Wednesday where the family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Crocker Scholarship Fund, c/o Mount Tom Day Camp, 48 Mount Tom Road, New Rochelle, N.Y. 10805 or to Ottaray Baptist Church, Lowe St., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of local arrangements.
Fred H. Duckett
AIKEN - Fred Hamilton Duckett, 72, of 400 Donner St., Aiken, died July 19, 2002, at ARMC. Mr. Duckett was a graduate of Union High School where he was an outstanding athlete playing football, baseball and basketball.
He was honored by being inducted into the Union High School Athletic Hall of Fame. After high school he continued to play all three sports at the University of South Carolina. Mr. Duckett was in the U.S. Air Force as a first lieutenant during the Korean Conflict.
He was a resident of Aiken for 45 years and was a retired occupational therapist with Alston Wilkes Society. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Aiken.
Surviving are his wife, Jane Rutland Duckett; a daughter, Lindy Duckett of Charleston; two sons, Randy Duckett of Aiken and Barry Duckett of Barnwell; seven grandchildren, Kelly Segars, Christy Segars, Matthew Duckett, Anna Duckett, Drew Duckett, Amy Duckett, Lisa Duckett; three brothers, Colon Duckett of Union, Gene Duckett and Dennis Duckett, both of Cowpens.
Mr. Duckett was predeceased by a brother, Dillard Duckett. Funeral services were held this morning at the First Baptist Church in Aiken by the Rev. Dr. Fred Andrea. Burial was in the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church Cemetery.
The family received friends Sunday night from 6 until 8 at the Shellhouse Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Aiken, 120 Chesterfield St., N.E., Aiken, S.C. 29801. Jack M. Hutcherson
Jack M. Hutcherson, 74, of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, died July 22, 2002, at 5:38 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Hutcherson was born in Union on March 18, 1928, a son of the late Oscar M. and Mae Howell Hutcherson.
He attended the Church of God. Mr. Hutcherson was retired from Milliken & Co. Surviving are three daughters, Teresa Stroupe, Mary Camp and Janice Blackwell all of Gaffney; three sisters, Virginia Toney, Hazel Willard and Sarah Riggs all of Union; a brother, Henry W. Hutcherson of Illinois; and a number of grandchildren.
Mr. Hutcherson was predeceased by a son, Joe Hutcherson. The family will be at their respective homes. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
