WOODRUFF - Willie James Gist, 80, of 519 Workman Avenue, died July 19, 2002 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. A native of Spartanburg County, he was the son of the late Dennis and Minnie Salters Gist.
He was educated at New Bethel High School, Sims High School, S.C. State College and the Atlanta School of Mortuary Science. Mr. Gist was the owner of W.J. Gist Mortuary in Woodruff; Alexander and Gist Funeral Services in Spartanburg and the owner of Apex Barber Shop in Woodruff.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby M. Gist of the home; a son, Kenneth E. Gist, three daughters, Vanessa Ray and Cheryl Moates of Woodruff and Audrey Watson of Rock Hill; two sisters, Minnie Armfield and Bertha Sims of Woodruff; two brothers, Odell Gist of Spartanburg and Rev. Fred W. Gist of Clinton; eight grandchildren, one great grandchild.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at New Bethel Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Stanley Watson. The family is at the home. W.J. Gist Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Jack M. Hutcherson
Jack M. Hutcherson, 74, of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, died July 22, 2002, at 5:38 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness.
Mr. Hutcherson was born in Union on March 18, 1928, a son of the late Oscar M. and Mae Howell Hutcherson. He attended the Church of God. Mr. Hutcherson was retired from Milliken & Co.
Surviving are three daughters, Teresa Stroupe, Mary Camp and Janice Blackwell all of Gaffney; three sisters, Virginia Toney, Hazel Willard and Sarah Riggs all of Union; two brothers, Henry W. Hutcherson of Chicago, Ill. and L.C. Hutcherson of Union; and a number of grandchildren. Mr. Hutcherson was predeceased by a son, Joe Hutcherson; two sisters, Mary Eubanks and Evelyn Gregory; and a brother, Harry Hutcherson.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Ricky Cook. The body will remain at the funeral home. The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at Rosemont Cemetery immediately following graveside services. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Pete Dockery
Houston L. (Pete) Dockery, 66, of 133 Tanglewood Dr., husband of Virginia Turner Dockery, died at his residence Monday night after a sudden illness. Mr. Dockery was born in Union on March 27, 1936, a son of the late Houston and Ruth Knox Dockery.
He was a Baptist and was a member of the VFW of Spartanburg. Mr. Dockery was a graduate of Spartanburg Technical College and was retired master sergeant with the U.S. Air Force.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Lisa Spencer of Union and Lynne Smith of Flat Rock, N.C.; a son, Alan Dockery of Union; five grandchildren, Christopher Spencer, Ginalee Spencer, Travis Dockery, Andrea Smith and Lauren Smith; and three sisters, Lena Lancaster, Sara Pearson and Emma Mae McCoy all of Union.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 3 pm. at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Warren Jones. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9. The family will be at 621 Vernon Foster Rd., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Mattie Allen
PACOLET Funeral services for Mattie Allen, 90, of 121 McHam Road, Pacolet, widow of Deacon Saul Allen will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Green Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Mills McHam, Rev. James Patton Jr., Rev. Clyde Eison, Rev. Jackie Dover and Rev. Bobby Dogan officiating. Interment will follow in Green Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
She will lie in state Saturday at Green Bethel Baptist Church at 1 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 1:30 until the hour of service. Honorary pallbearers will be Deacon William Thomas and Deacon J. T. Allen.
Active pallbearers will be: Deacon David Ray Thomas, Deacon Eddie Logan, Deacon Francis Logan, Bobby Dawkins, Alonzo Farr and Thomas D. Davis Jr. Flower bearers will be: Mrs. Dorothy Littlejohn, Mrs. Hazel Allen, Mrs. Annie Mae Thomas, Mrs. Lelia Thomas, Mrs. Regina Hamrick and Mrs. Corrine Davis.
She was a native of Union County, a daughter of the late Stark and Victoria Glenn Whitmire Hill. She is survived by a brother, Clinton Gregory of Union; step-daughter, Mrs. Debra Kay Montgomery of Gaffney; a nephew she reared in the home and a son, Bobby Smith of Danville, Va. Benjamin F. Alston Jr.
BENNETTSVILLE Memorial services were held this afternoon at 3 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church for Benjamin Faneuil Alston Jr., 74. Mr. Alston died July 24, 2002, at his residence. Born Aug. 20, 1927 in Union, he was a son of the late Benjamin Faneuil Alston Sr. and Ruth Foster Alston.
He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He was a graduate of the Union City Schools, attended The Citadel and graduated from Wofford College in 1951. He served in the U.S. Maritime Service and U.S. Army. Mr. Alston took R.O.T.C. at Wofford and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. He later was called to serve in the Korean War and was discharged on May 31, 1956.
He worked for the American Discount Company in Charlotte as credit manager from 1953-56. From Charlotte he moved to Bennettsville as branch manager of Marlboro Trust Co., then First National Bank of S.C. as assistant vice president and loan officer. He joined the Midgley Agency in 1968 as vice president and partner. Mr. Alston was Crusade Chairman of the Marlboro County Cancer Society; Committee Chairman 1964-66; president, 1966-67; and director, 1967-69.
He was director and president of the Marlboro County Chamber of Commerce. From 1967-69 he was president of the Marlboro-Chesterfield-Dillon Wofford Alumni Club. He was president o the Kiwanis Club, treasurer of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Vestryman and treasurer of St. Paul's Kindergarten.
His banking career included serving as director of the Pee Dee Chapter of the American Banking Institute and as president of the Pee Dee Chapter of the American Institute of Banking. Mr. Alston served as president of the Marlboro County Board of Realtors, and a member of the executive committee of the Independent Insurance Agents of South Carolina.
Ben's special interest included serving as a member of the Pee Dee Florence Chapter for the Alliance for the mentally ill. Tri-County Alliance vice president, South Carolina Alliance and National Alliance for the mentally ill. He was on the administration board of the Tri County Mental Health Center and chairman 1993-94.
Surviving are his wife, Sara Jane Johnson Alston of Bennettsville; a son, Benjamin F. Alston III of Columbia; daughters, Barbara Jane Covington of Cheraw, Patricia Foster Sandzen of Greenville and Nancy Jean Gilbert of Woodruff; grandchildren, Charlotte Covington, Charles Covington Jr., Carl Sigurd Sandzen and Faneuil Alston Sandzen.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Pre-kindergarten, P.O. Box 587, or to the Hospice of Marlboro County, P.O. Box 474, Bennettsville, S.C. 29512. Whitner-Evans Funeral Home of Bennettsville had charge of the arrangements.
Willie L. Justice
Willie L. Justice, 83, of 108 Wayside Drive, died July 25, 2002, at 12:40 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Justice was born in Union on Jan. 14, 1919, a daughter of the late Milas and Mary Franklin Justice. She was of the Baptist faith and was retired from United Merchants Union Plant.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Wylie and Leslie Justice of Spartanburg; two step-grandchildren, Susie Smith and Andrew Smith both of Spartanburg; seven sisters, Alice J. Williford, Kathleen J. Ivey, Bernice J. Falls, Jessie J. McClure, Alma Justice and Diane Justice all of Union and Dora Justice Boyles of Lake Murray; two brothers, Franklin Justice and Burton Justice both of Buffalo.
Mrs. Justice was predeceased by a sister and two brother, Viola J. Williams, Wylie R. Justice and Bryant Justice. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Tim Anderson.
Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Todd Justice, William R. Falls, Alden McLure, Larry Yarbrough, Jerry Yarbrough and Michael Toney. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9. The family is at the home, 108 Wayside Drive, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Joe F. Adams Jr.
Joe Fields Adams Jr., 46, of 1748 Tinker Creek Rd., husband of Elizabeth Hawkins Adams, died at his home July 27, 2002, at 11:32 a.m. after an extended illness. Mr. Adams was born in Union on Nov. 7, 1955, a son of Anne Little Adams of Santuck and the late Joe F. (Babe) Adams Sr.
He was a member of Salem Baptist Church, Santuck Masonic Lodge #227 and was former Fire Chief with the Santuck Volunteer Fire Department for 16 years. Mr. Adams was a graduate of Union High School, was former owner and operator of Joe Adams Store and was an employee of International Paper Co.
Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a son, Joe Fields Adams III of the home; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Debbie and Billy O'Daniel, Carol A. Petty, and Beth A. and Joe McDonald all of Santuck; and two nieces and a nephew, Katie O'Daniel, Adam Petty and Courtney Petty all of Santuck.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Salem Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Bennie Green and Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Ricky Lawson, George Lynn, Ben Alverson, Leonard Green, Grady Fuller and Jimbo Whitney.
The following are asked to assemble at the church today at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Johnny Gregory, Jimmy Hodge, Stanley Vanderford, Jimmy Brown, Wilds Clemmons, Ronnie Ingle, Eddie Medlock and Bo Pierce.
The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. today to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 1748 Tinker Creek Road, Union.
Memorials may be made to the Salem Baptist Church Building Fund, 330 Santuck Drive, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
