Lillian B. Cato
Retired secretary

MANNING Lillian Brunson Cato, 85, wife of Julius A. Cato, died July 27, 2002, at Sterling House of Sumter. She was born Aug. 2, 1916 in Sumter, a daughter of the late George Wilder Brunson and Blanche Poplin Brunson.

Mrs. Cato was a retired secretary and a member of Manning Second Baptist Church. Surviving besides her husband of Sterling House are a son, Rev. Bob Cato and wife, Erma, of Laurens; a daughter, Jean C. Corbett and husband, Woody, of Manning; a brother, George Brunson of Sumter and five grandchildren.

Graveside services were held this morning at 11 a.m. in Sumter Cemetery, with the Rev. Pec Chathan officiating. Grandsons served as pallbearers. The family received friends from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and at other times at the residence of Jean and Woody Corbett, 1321 Gunter Road, Manning.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 1236-B. Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150 or to Second Baptist Church, P.O. Box 747, Manning, S.C. 29102. Stephens Funeral Home in Manning was in charge of arrangements. Announcement courtesy of the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Lenora J. Sparks

Funeral services for Lenora J. Sparks, 84, widow of Clyde Martin Sparks, were held this afternoon at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Whitmire. Mrs. Sparks died July 26, 2002 in the National Health Care in Clinton. She is survived by a son, two daughters, a brother, three sisters, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Gray Funeral Home of Whitmire had charge of arrangements.

Henry L. Vinson
Retired textile worker

AUGUSTA, Ga. Henry Lewis (Buck) Vinson, 76, of Augusta died July 27, 2002 at the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home. Surviving are a daughter, Gloria Shepeard of Tampa, Fla.; son, Larry Vinson Sr. of Augusta, Ga.; sisters, Frances Ansley of Augusta, Ga., Betty Kelly, Becky McAbee and Kathy Henderson of Union; brothers, Bobby Vinson and J.T. Vinson of Union; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Vinson was a native of Union but had lived in Augusta, Ga., since 1955. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired from the textile industry. Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Rosemont Cemetery in Union.

The family will receive friends at the Thomas Potett & Son Funeral Home in Augusta today from 5-7 p.m. Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors has charge of arrangements. Announcement courtesy of S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Virginia I. Vanderford
Retired pharmacy technician

BUFFALO - Virginia Inman Vanderford, 68, of 138 Inman Dr., Buffalo, wife of Iverson G. Vanderford, died at her residence July 30, 2002, at 2:40 p.m. after a brief illness. Mrs. Vanderford was born in Union County on June 30, 1934, a daughter of the late B.H. and Pearl Wright Inman.

She was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church and a charter member of Alee Ladies of Honor Auxiliary of Augusta, Ga. Mrs. Vanderford attended Union High School and was a retired pharmacy technician with the V.A. Hospital in Augusta, Ga.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Freddie Vanderford of Buffalo; two sisters, Geneva I. Inman and Valerie I. Phillips both of Buffalo; two brothers, Roger Inman of Lawrenceville, Ga. and Billy H. Inman Jr. of Spartanburg; a grandson, Derik Vanderford of Aiken; and a special friend, Beth Smith of Augusta, Ga. Mrs. Vanderford was predeceased by a daughter, Janet Vanderford and a brother, Jennings Inman.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Phillip Chandler and Rev. Steve Lemons. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Phillip Lemons, Forest Vanderford, Ray (Butch) Inman, Roger Inman, Billie Inman and Charles A. (Buddy) Vanderford.

The following are asked to assemble at the funeral chapel Thursday at 10:45 a.m. to form the honorary escort: John Quinn, Ted Babb, Kenny O'Shields, Earl Black, Jerry Quinn, Jerry Kingsmore, Bill Burnett, Bill Lanier, Paul Buffington, Ron Ball, Rodney Lawson, Ronnie Belue and Ellis Jenkins.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9. The family is at the home, 138 Inman Dr., Buffalo. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Claude Jackson
Retired deputy sheriff

GREAT FALLS Claude Talmadge (Shorty) Jackson, 75, husband of Billie Lee Killian Jackson, of 402 Sunset Ave., Great Falls, died July 31, 2002, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster. Mr. Jackson was born in Cowpens on Oct. 18, 1926, a son of the late Lawrence Ray Jackson and Emerline Bradley Jackson.

He was retired as Chester County Deputy Sheriff and Security Guard at J.P. Stevens Company. Mr. Jackson was a member of Mt. Dearborn United Methodist Church and attended York County Schools. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of Great Falls Masonic Lodge #277.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Sandra J. Trippett of Greensboro, N.C.; two grandsons, Jeff Martin and Marson Trippett; a brother, Bobby Jackson of Union; and a sister, Betty Gregory of Belleview, Fla. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Mt. Dearborn United Methodist Church by the Rev. Sandra Hatchell.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery with masonic rites. The family will receive friends tonight from 7-8:30 at the funeral home. Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home, Great Falls, has charge of arrangements.

Sallie Mae Jeter
Union county native

WHITMIRE - Sallie Mae Rice Jeter, 77, wife of Dennis Jeter Jr., of 115 Gilliam St., Whitmire, died July 31, 2002 at Wallace Thomson Hospital in Union. Mrs. Jeter was born in Union County, a daughter of the late Will and Mary Jane Rice. She was a member of Jeter Chapel A.M.E. Church in Carlisle.

Mrs. Jeter was predeceased by a brother, Willie Rice Jr., and a sister, Lugine Rice. Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Carolyn (Lib) (Willie) Simmons of Stubenville, Ohio and Shirley (Rev. Isaac) Booker of Clinton; a son, Dennis (Deloris) Jeter III of Temple Hills, Md.; a sister, Ethel Rice (Lawrence) Jones of the home; two brothers, Robert (Ethel Lee) Rice of Whitmire and Charley Rice of Panama City, Fla.; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two aunts, Silliar Pendergrass of Union and Leola Jeter of Cleveland, Ohio; an uncle, Nely Jeter Jr., of Whitmire and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Jeter Chapel A.M.E. Church in Carlisle. Visitation will be from noon until 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Hunter Funeral Home of Whitmire has charge of arrangements.

Mary E. Walker

LORIAN, OHIO Mary E. Smith Walker, of 2425 Reeves Ave., Lorian, Ohio, formerly of Chester, died July 29, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospice Center in Lorian, Ohio.

The family will receive friends at the home of her mother, Mrs. Hazel Smith in Union. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Christopher King's Funeral Home, Chester.

Russell A. Baylor Sr.
Retired Town of Carlisle Judge

CARLISLE Russell A. Baylor Sr., 73, husband of Elmira Booker Baylor, of 4303 Fishdam Ave., Carlisle, died July 30, 2002, at his home. Mr. Baylor was born in Philadelphia, Pa. on Feb. 14, 1928, a son of the late Joseph and Minnie Lee Baylor.

He was of the Catholic faith and attended the public schools in Pennsylvania. Mr. Baylor was retired from J.P. Stevens with 35 years of service, and was former fire chief and Judge for the Town of Carlisle. He was a member of the Men's Aid Lodge #50 and was a veteran of the U.S. Marines.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, Lavern Baylor and Russell Baylor Jr., both of Philadelphia, Pa., and Gary Baylor of Carlisle; two daughters, Lether Bea Hodges of Whitmire and Sandra Spull of Philadelphia, Penn.; a sister, Lelia Watson of Phildelphia, Pa.; 17 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at James Chapel Baptist Church by the Revs. Johnnie Edwards, Rubin Smalls and Evangelist Maxine Spencer. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body will be place in the church at 10:15 a.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. The family will be at the home tonight. Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Neley Jeter Jr.

Neley Jeter Jr., 82, died Aug. 1, 2002, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Jeter was born in Union, a son of the late Neley and Silliar Gilliam Jeter. He was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Clairton, Pa.

Surviving are two sisters, Silliar Pendergrass of Union and Leola Jeter of Carlisle; a devoted niece, Ethel Rice Jones of Whitmire; and other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Jeter Chapel AME Church, Carlisle.

Visitation will be from Saturday 12 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Hunter Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Lekisha Stewart

Lekisha Stewart, died Aug. 1, 2002, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Whitney Funeral Home.
