Ellie Burch Black, 85, widow of Charles Noel Black, of 304 Springs St., died Aug. 2, 2002, at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home. Mrs. Black was born in Sylva, N.C. on Sept. 17, 1916, a daughter of the late Adam and Ari Davenport Burch.
She was retired from textiles and attended the Union Church of God. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are a daughter, Virginia Southerland of Whitmire; three sons, James Wayne Black, Larry Black and Ricky Black all of Union; five grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Mrs. Black was predeceased by three sisters, Carrie Burch Harris, Flora Burch Harris and Mary Burch Eubanks; two brothers, Luther Burch and Carl Birch.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Union Church of God by Rev. Alton Stone and Rev. Scott Cobb. Burial was in Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Charles Black, Kenneth Black, Shannon Southerland, Halon Duckett, George G.C. Painter and Eddie O'Dell.
The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Saturday night from 7-9 and was placed in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service.
The family was at the home of her son, Larry Black, 304 Spring St., Union. Memorials may be made to Palmetto Hospice, PO Box 7275, Columbia, SC 29202. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Era H. Brown
Era Harris Brown, 86, widow of Lewis Vernon Brown, of 1601 Jonesville Hwy., died Aug. 2, 2002, at the home of her daughter after a long illness. Mrs. Brown was born in Union on Jan. 29, 1916, a daughter of the late James Marvin and Letha Jane Knox Harris.
She was a homemaker and a member of Fairforest Baptist Church. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Gayle B. and Henry Palmer Jr. of Union; a son, Michael L. Brown of Moore; three grandchildren, Wayne Palmer of Pauline, Tammie Roark of Jonesville and Clay Palmer of Union; and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Brown was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Janice Z. Brown; a brother, Dewey Harris; and three sisters, Evadelle Knox, Irene Nichols and Eva Blackwell.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Fairforest Baptist Church by Rev. Aulbrey Calvert, Rev. Church Auton and Mr. Travis Dix. Burial was in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers were Jerry Belue, Steve Trammell, Mark Berry, Allen Brown, Jason Knox and Harvey Belue. The body was placed in the church at 1:45 p.m. Sunday where the family received friends until 2:45 p.m. prior to the funeral service.
The family was at the home of her daughter, Gayle Palmer, 1589 Jonesville Hwy. Memorials may be made to Palmetto Hospice, PO Box 7275, Columbia, SC 29202. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Lakisha L. Stewart
Lakisha Leontyna Stewart, 23, of 604 West Main St., died at her home on Aug. 1, 2002. She was born in Hartford, Conn. on Aug. 2, 1978, a daughter of Debbie Stewart Vail and the late Michael Gardner. She was a member of Pilgram Way Baptist Church in Conn., attended Williams Chapel in Carlisle, and graduated from Manchester High School in 1996.
Surviving in addition to her mother are two brothers, Antoine Stewart of the home and Donald Vail of Hartford, Conn.; three sisters, Raynette Vail of the home, Felicia and Andrea Vail both of Hartford, Conn.; and her grandmother, Ira Gardner of Hartford, Conn.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Williams Chapel Church by Rev. Bruce Dawkins and Rev. Larry Davis. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at the home tonight, 604 W. Main St. The body will be placed in the church at 1:15 Tuesday to await the hour of service. Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Mary Elaine Smith-Walker
LORAIN, Ohio Mary Elaine Smith-Walker, died July 29, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospice Center in Lorain, Ohio. Ms. Smith-Walker was born in Union on Aug. 7, 1950, a daughter of Ernest L. and Hazel O. Smith. She was educated in the Lorain Public Schools.
She graduated from Lorain High School in 1967 and received an associates degree in business from Griswold Institute, now known as Devry Institute in Cleveland, Ohio. She was employed for 13 years with Norfolk & Western Railroad and for 14 years with York International. Ms. Smith-Walker joined Second Baptist Church and Fairfield Baptist Church in Lorain, Ohio where she participated in a singing group with her sisters called 'The Smith Sisters' and also the Choraleers and other church activities.
Surviving in addition to her parents are two daughters, Ursula (Allen) Wilkes of Chester and Danicka (Steven) Ranson of Elyria, Ohio; a son, Donta (Andrea) Walker of Elyria, Ohio; sisters, Linda (James) Mahone of Elyria, Ohio; A. Ruth Smith and Jackie Smith both of Lorain, Ohio; and Veronica Smith of Augusta, Ga.; brothers, Jesse James (Virginia) Harris of Jonesville, Ernest Smith Jr. of Oberlin, Ohio and Edward (Yvette) Smith of Charlotte, N.C.; a cousin reared as a son, Sgt. 1st Class Derrek Gilmore of Ansbach, Germany; and seven grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Tarue Wesley Lamont Walker; her maternal grandparents, Isaiah and Irene Land; and paternal grandmother, Mabelle Sutton Smith.
Funeral services will be held today at 1 p.m. at Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church conducted by Pastor Curtis Washington and Rev. Dr. Gregory Ballard with Rev. Robert Bailey assisting. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Viewing was Sunday from 2-9 p.m. and today from 9-11 a.m. at Chris King's Memorial Chapel, and from 12 noon until the hour of service at the church.
The family will receive friends from the home of her parents, Ernest and Hazel Smith, 3473 Lockhart Highway. Funeral services are entrusted to Christopher King's Funeral Home, Chester.
Grace Ophelia Willard
BUFFALO - Grace Ophelia Willard, 93, of 120 Bailey Rd., Buffalo, died Aug. 4, 2002, in White Oak Manor after a long illness. Miss Willard was born in Buffalo on Aug. 26, 1908, a daughter of the late Dave and Anna Harvey Willard.
She was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant and from Palmetto Drugs on Main St., Union. Miss Willard was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are one niece, Margaret Jenkins of Spartanburg; and a number of other nieces and nephews. Miss Willard was predeceased by five sisters, Bess Sherbert, Estelle Willard, Mary Willard, Kate Jenkins and Matt Bailey; and four brothers, Humphries Willard, Glover Willard, Lewis Willard and Alvin Willard.
Funeral services will be held today at 3 p.m. at Buffalo United Methodist Church by Rev. Phillip Chandler. Burial will be at Sardis United Methodist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Eddie Boulward, Tommy Lane, Scott Lane, Mitchell Jenkins and Jamie Long.
The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. today where the family will receive friends in the church parlor until the hour of service. Memorials may be made to the Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 186, Buffalo, SC 29321. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Jean Ward Bell
RADFORD, VA. Jean Ward Bell, 70, of Radford, Va., wife of Ralph S. Bell Sr., died July 31, 2002, in a Durham, N.C., hospital. Mrs. Bell was born in Union on Sept. 22, 1931, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ben Ward Sr.
She was a graduate of Union High School, Class of 1949 and a graduate of Spartanburg Hospital School of Nursing.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Melody Bell of Greenville; two sons, R. Samuel Bell Jr. of Radford, Va. and Michael W. Bell of Draper, Va.; a sister, Hilda Ward Bailey of Union; a brother, Ben Ward Jr. of Union; and seven grandchildren, Betty Jean Bell, Samuel Adam Bell, Ava Carol Bell, Fesser Ward Bell, Stewart Macleay Bell, Vivian Edith Bell and Lauren Jessica Bell.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3 at The First Baptist Church in Radford, Va. with Dr. Paul Lane and Rev. Kent Taylor officiating. Burial was in the Westview Cemetery.

Catherine W. Gairing
SPARTANBURG - Catherine Wagnon Gairing, 88, of 2 Woodberry Place, died Aug. 3, 2002, at her home. A native of Union, she was the daughter of the late L.L. and Sallie Wilkins Wagnon and the wife of the late David Reynold Gairing.
She was a graduate of Winthrop College, where she received a masters degree from Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio.
After receiving her masters degree, she spent many years as a social worker in Cleveland. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent, a member and former president of The Shepherd Center, and a member and past president of the EpiscoPals.
Survivors include a sister, Marjorie W. Mellor of Spartanburg. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the Episcopal Church of the Advent conducted by the Rev. Dr. Clay H. Turner.
Memorials may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Advent, 141 Advent Street, Spartanburg, S.C. 29302 or to The Shepherd Center, 393 E. Main Street, Spartanburg, S.C. 29302.
The family is at the home of her sister, 141 Highridge Drive, Spartanburg. Floyd's North Church Street Chapel has charge of arrangements.
Kenneth Reece Stewart
SPARTANBURG Kenneth Reece Stewart, 42, of 1401A Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, died at his home Aug. 5, 2002, after a sudden illness. Mr. Stewart was born in Union on Aug. 16, 1959, a son of Shirley Palmer Fuller of Spartanburg and Guy Stewart of Union.
He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Mr. Stewart was a graduate of Union High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Mr. Stewart owned and operated a custom painting business in Florida for 20 years.
Surviving in addition to his parents are a daughter, Kelly Stewart of Buffalo; a sister, Debbie S. Richardson of Conway; his step-mother, Dot Stewart of Union; and a nephew, Stewart Richardson of Conway.
Memorials may be made to Mobile Meals of Spartanburg, Inc., 393 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302, or to Tabernacle Baptist Church Building Fund, 915 S. Pinckney St., Union. Arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
