Georgia E. Smith
Retired

Georgia Mae Enlow Smith, 87, of 117 3rd. St., widow of Leroy David (Buck) Smith, died at the home of her son at 21 Landing Road, Prosperity, Aug. 6, 2002, at 5:50 p.m. after an extended illness.

Mrs. Smith was born in Prosperity on Feb. 28, 1915, a daughter of the late George and Alice Cromer Enlow. She was a member of Zion United Methodist Church of Prosperity and was retired from American Fibers in Newberry.

Mrs. Smith was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are a daughter, Clemmie J. Vinson of Union; a son, Calvin Smith of Union; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Rosemont Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home. The family is at the home, 117 3rd. St., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Kenneth Reece Stewart
U.S. Navy veteran

SPARTANBURG - Kenneth Reece Stewart, 42, of 1401A Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, died at his home Aug. 5, 2002, after a sudden illness. Mr. Stewart was born in Union on Aug. 16, 1959, a son of Shirley Palmer Fuller of Spartanburg and Guy Stewart of Union.

He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Mr. Stewart was a graduate of Union High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Mr. Stewart owned and operated a custom painting business in Florida for 20 years.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a daughter, Kelly Stewart of Buffalo; a sister, Debbie S. Richardson of Conway; his step-mother, Dot Stewart of Union; and a nephew, Stewart Richardson of Conway. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Tabernacle Baptist Church with the Rev. Barry Ellis and Rev. Neal Yongue officiating.

The family is at the home of his mother, Shirley Fuller, 109 Lockwood St., Spartanburg, and at the home of his father, Guy Stewart, 205 Maid Marion Drive, Union.

Memorials may be made to Mobile Meals of Spartanburg, Inc., 393 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302, or to Tabernacle Baptist Church Building Fund, 915 S. Pinckney St., Union. The S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Juanita J. Brown

WHITMIRE - Juanita Julia Johnson Brown, 70, of 239 Duckett Ave., Whitmire, died Aug. 7, 2002. Mrs. Brown was born in Newberry County on Dec. 9, 1931, a daughter of the late Joe and Emma Johnson.

She was a member of Love Chapel Holiness Church in Whitmire. Surviving are four sisters, Mable (Ulysser) Swittenberg of Rockville Center, N.Y.; Rev. Emma L. (Ernest) Ruff of Bronx, N.Y.; Dorothy (Willie) Boyd and Jo Ann Booker all of Washington, D.C.; three brothers, Hayward (Mattie) Johnson of Seat Pleasant, Md.; Charlie (Barbara) Johnson of District Heights, Md.; Eddie (Ernestine) Johnson of Upper Marlbora, Md.; an adopted son, Hector Ortiz; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Sims Chapel Baptist Church in Whitmire. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6-8 p.m. at Love Chapel Holiness Church. The family is at the home, 226 Duckett Ave., Whitmire. Hunter Funeral home has charge of arrangements.

Laura R. Halsey
Retired from School District

Laura R. Halsey, 89, of 108 Woodrow St., died Aug. 6, 2002, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Halsey was born in Union County on Nov. 25, 1912, a daughter of the late Edmond and Eliza Reid and the wife of the late Samuel Halsey Jr.

She was a lifetime member of Paradise A.M.E. Church and was retired from the School District of Union County. Surviving are a sister-in-law, Laura W. Yeargin of Greenville; Ruth Blakely of Laurens who was reared in the home; a cousin, Betty Kelley of Charlotte, N.C.; and a nephew, Nathaniel (Jean) Wilson of Greensboro, N.C.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Paradise A.M.E. Church by the Rev. R.D. Smith and Rev. Courtney Mills. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home and at the church at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Viewing at the funeral home will be Friday from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. The body will be placed in the church at 12 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. Gibson and Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mattie Lee Norris
Retired from Wallace Thomson

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Mattie Lee Browning Norris, 89, of 127 Lockman Ave., Staten Island, N.Y., widow of Aubrey Norris Sr., died Aug. 6, 2002, in the Golden Gate Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.

Mrs. Norris was born in Union County on Oct. 23, 1912. She was retired from Wallace Thomson Hospital in the Housekeeping Department and was a member of Wyatt's Chapel Baptist Church. She also belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include five daughters, Ruth Hazel Norris of Mutchen, N.J.; Bessie Lloyd of Staten Island, N.Y.; Carolyn Irene Nichols of Decatur, Ga.; Iola Jones of Silver Springs, Md.; and Gwendolyn Webb of Oxon Hill, Md.; three sons, John D. Norris of North Babylon, N.Y.; Aubrey Norris Jr. of Staten Island, N.Y.; and Charles Norris of Buffalo; three sisters, Asilee Rice of Jonesville, Pearl Prysock of Staten Island, N.Y.; and Irene Floyd of Woodruff; 20 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Wyatt's Chapel Baptist Church in the Buffalo Community with the Rev. Calvin Rice officiating. Burial will be held in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at noon Saturday to await the hour of service. The family will receive visitation and friends at the home, 178 Peakeville Rd., Buffalo. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of arrangements.

Betty D. Jones
Union native

OCALA, FLA. Betty Dickerson Jones, 74, of Ocala, Fla., died Aug. 6, 2002, at her home. Mrs. Jones was born in Union. She moved to Ocala 40 years ago where she was a former waitress. Mrs. Jones is of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two sons, Charles Jones of Ocklawaha, Fla. and Jim Spillers of London, England; a sister, Joretta Smith of Union; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Hiers Funeral Home, Ocala, Fla., has charge of arrangements.

Sarah M. Sanders Sarah M. Sanders, wife of Rev. L.C. Sanders, formerly of 207 Blassingame St., died Aug. 8, 2002, in Spartanburg. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Union Community Funeral Home.

Thomas C. Knight

LANCASTER Thomas Carpenter Knight, 30, of 517 Chesnut St., Lancaster, died Aug. 9, 2002, at his home. Funeral services will be held tonight at 7 at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel by Dr. Steve Stewart.

Burial will be private services. The family will receive friends tonight following the memorial services at the funeral home and at other times at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, 3267 Catawba River Road, Fort Lawn.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Thomas Knight Funeral Fund, c/o Lisa Culp, 3267 Catawba River Road, Fort Lawn, SC 29714. Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
