Malcolm Lee O'Shields, infant son of Thomas Earl and Billie Charlene Gault O'Shields, of 789 Philippi Church Road, died Aug. 29, 2002, at 4:01 a.m. in Spartan-burg Regional Medical Center. Malcolm Lee was born in Union on June 8, 2002.
Surviving in addition to his parents are a brother, Jayce O'Shields of Jackson, Miss.; his paternal grandfather and his wife, Tom O'Shields Sr. and Kay O'Shields of Union; the paternal grandmother, Josie O'Shields of Union; the maternal grandfather, Billy Gault of Union; the maternal grandmother, Rosanna Mar-tin of Union; and the maternal great-grandparents, Bill and Pearl Gault of Union. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Bob Inman.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Friday night from 7-8. The family is at the home of the paternal grandfather, Tom O'Shields Sr. and Kay O'Shields, 919 Philippi Church Road. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Robert L. Baker
WHITMIRE - Robert L. Baker, 86, of 114 O'Dell St., Whitmire, died Aug. 29, 2002, at his home. Mr. Baker was born in Whitmire on Jan. 20, 1916, a son of the late M.L. (Mac) and Viola Mae Dantzler Baker. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Baker was a retired employee of the J.P. Stevens Co., Whitmire Plant where he worked for 42 years.
When he retired, he was foreman of the machine shop. He was also a cattle farmer and a rose grower. He was a member and former council member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church, the Whitmire Lions Club and American Legion Post 70 in Whitmire. He was a former Mayor of the Town of Whitmire, having served four terms in office.
Surviving are his wife, Faye Jenkins Baker of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda B. and Kenneth S. Darby of Clinton; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert L. Jr. and Teresa Baker of Whitmire; a brother, Kenneth Q. Baker of Whitmire; and three grandchildren, Robert Duane Darby of Whitmire, Lin Darby McAbee of Spartanburg and Michael E. Baker of Columbia. Mr. Baker was predeceased by four brothers, Paul Baker, Claude Baker, M.L. Baker, and David F. Baker; and a sister, Ruth Baker Inman.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Timothy Lutheran Church by the Rev. John Weaver and the Rev. Rodney Gunter. Interment will be in the Beth-Eden Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-8 tonight at the residence, 114 O'Dell St., Whitmire.

Margie Lewis
BROOKLYN, N.Y. Margie L. Hughes Lewis, 78, of Brooklyn, N.Y., formerly of the Wilksburg Community, Chester Co., died Aug. 22, 2002, at Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y. Mrs. Lewis was married to the late Floyd Smith and Willie Lewis.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Rowell Baptist Church in Union Co. with Rev. J.D. Ponders officiating, Rev. Daniel Chisholm delivering the Eulogy, Rev. J.D. McClurkin assisting. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7-8 at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester. The body my be viewed from 3-9 today and 9 a.m. until noon Saturday at the funeral home. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. King's Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Malcolm L. O'Shields

Verna Mae Berry
Verna Mae Heller Berry, 90, of 108 Douglass Heights, widow of William Yates Berry, died at her residence Sept. 1, 2002, at 2 a.m. after an extended illness. Mrs. Berry was born in Pomaria on Aug. 29, 1912, a daughter of the late James M. and Eunice Frances Wertz Heller.
She was the oldest member of Augsburg Lutheran Church, was a life member of the Lutheran Church Women, an honorary member of the church council, was a former Sunday School teacher and member of the church choir. Mrs. Berry was a 1929 graduate of Pomaria High School. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Pat and James C. Winburn of the home and Dot and Tommy Humphries of Union; five grandchildren, Audrey Lancaster, Lisa Rogers and Ann Clayton, all of Union, Kirk Winburn of Rock Hill and Stanley Humphries of Silver Street; nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Berry was predeceased by a daughter, Violet Frances Berry; a brother, George W. Heller; and a sister, Fairy Wicker.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Augsburg Lutheran Church by the Rev. Ralph Riddle. Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery in Newberry. Active pallbearers will be Kirk Winburn, Tommy Lancaster, John and David Clayton, Stanley Humphries, Ed Wicker, and Douglas MacFarlane.
The following are asked to assemble at the church Tuesday at 1:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Dr. Robert Yannetti, Dr. Jeff Craft, Charles Craig, Dusty Brumbles, Men of Augsburg Lutheran Church, and the W.E.L.C.A. of the church. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service.
The family is at the home, 108 Douglass Heights, Union. Memorials may be made to Augsburg Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 366, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
Pearl T. Boughman
Pearl Thomas Boughman, 84, of 146 Santuc Drive, widow of Ray Boughman, died at her home Aug. 30, 2002, at 2:53 p.m. after a sudden illness. Mrs. Boughman was born in Union County on Sept. 5, 1917, a daughter of the late Eugene Gadsen Thomas and Elise McGowan Thomas.
She was a member of Salem Baptist Church and the Prime Timers. Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Carolyn B. and Francis (Bunk) Crocker of Santuc and Shirley and Fred Kingsmore of Prosperity; four grandchildren, Freddie Kingsmore of Irmo, Patti Kingsmore of Columbia, Tami C. Pettit of Pacolet and Russell Crocker of Santuc; and five great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Mark Kingsmore of Irmo, Marissa and Justin Pettit of Pacolet and Chance Gregory of Santuc.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Salem Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Wayne Cook. Burial was in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers were Frank Boughman, Dennis Boughman, Jerry Boughman Preston Thomas, Ellis Jenkins and Glenn Boughman. The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Saturday from 6-8 p.m. and was placed in the church at 2 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service.
The family was at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Bunk Crocker, 140 Santuc Drive, Union. Memorials may be made to Salem Baptist Church Building Fund, care of Debbie O'Daniel, 330 Santuc Drive, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.
Houston H. Hines
Houston Henry Hines, 95, of 310 Maple St., widower of Louise Arthur Hines, died Sept. 2, 2002, at 4 a.m. in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after a brief illness. Mr. Hines was born in Gastonia, N.C. on Jan. 14, 1907, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. L.B. Hines. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and a former member of the Eastern Carolina, the Independent, and the Carolina Textile League Baseball Teams.
He was once under contract with the New York Yankees and has always been known for his good pitching record and could wield a pretty mean bat. Mr. Hines was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant. Surviving are a daughter and her husband, Gwen and Sonny Crocker of Union; a son and his wife, Don and Flo Hines; six grandchildren, Donna Sumner of Union, Scotty Hines of Spartanburg, Jan Hines of Union, Monty Crocker of Atlanta, Ga., Alan Hines of Union and Donise Eubanks of Union; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Don Alexander and Rev. C. Allen Senn. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7-8:30. The family is at the home of his daughter, Gwen and Sonny Crocker, 310 Maple St., Union.

Wilma Jeter
ASHEVILLE, N.C. Wilma Jeter, 87, of Asheville, N.C., died Aug. 31, 2002, at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville, N.C. Mrs. Jeter was born in Anderson County on Sept. 14, 1914, a daughter of the late Walter and Netta Rice. She was a member of Saint Margaret Mary Catholic Church of Swannonoa, N.C.
Surviving is a step-son, Wardell (Barbara) Lyles of Union. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Gibson and Brown Chapel by the Rev. Dr. A.L. Brackett and Rev. James Farr. Burial will be in the St. Paul Society Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at 108 Williams St. Viewing will be at the funeral home today from 12-8 p.m. and Wednesday until the hour of service. Gibson and Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
