James D. Silvers
U.S. Army veteran

GAFFNEY - James Dewey Silvers, 80, of 510 Thompson St., Gaffney, formerly of Union, died Sept. 4, 2002, in Brookview Nursing Home after an extended illness. Mr. Silvers was born in Bryson City, N.C. on April 8, 1922, a son of the late Lorenzo and Ollie Crisp Silvers. He was retired from Fluor Daniel Construction and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Mr. Silvers was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are four daughters, Joyce Nelson of Union, Doris Meckovic of Elon College, N.C.; Carolyn Rhoton of Ashboro, N.C. and Betty Silvers of High Point, N.C.; one sister, Grace Keith of Union; one brother, Carl Silvers of Acworth, Ga.; and one grandson, Bruce Edward Jett Jr. of Union; and 11 other grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.

Mr. Silvers was predeceased by a son, James Silvers Jr. The family is at the home of his daughter, Joyce Nelson, 119 Lanier Lane, Union. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Joyce G. Ward
Methodist

Joyce Garrett Ward, 54, of 127 Lake Run Rd., wife of James E. (Bucky) Ward Jr., died at her residence Sept. 4, 2002, after a sudden illness. Mrs. Ward was born in Union on June 1, 1948, a daughter of Clarence Earl Greer of Union and the late Athaleen Ivey Greer. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and was formerly employed with Advance America.

Mrs. Ward was first married to the late Melvin Aaron (Mel) Garrett. Surviving in addition to her husband and father are a daughter and son-in-law, Melissa Garrett Vinson and Gene Vinson of Union; a son, Thomas Aaron Garrett of Simpsonville; two grandchildren, Adam and Ashley Vinson both of Union; a brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Kim Greer of Union; two nephews, Jim and Jeffery Greer of Union; and her mother-in-law, Clara B. Ward of Union.

The family is at the home, 127 Lake Run Rd., Union. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

The family is at the home of his daughter, Joyce Nelson, 119 Lanier Lane, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Joyce G. Ward

Ward of Union.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church by Rev. Don Alexander and Rev. Will Brown. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Jim Greer, Michael Garrett, Steven Garrett, Todd Garrett, Richard Croft, Lee Nivens and Lee Banks.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 127 Lake Run Rd., Union. Memorials may be made to the Bethel United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1705 Lockhart Highway., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Meryl B. Gregory

CRANSTON, R.I. Meryl (Bigelow) Gregory, 79, of Hope Road, Cranston, R.I., died Aug. 29, 2002, at her home. Mrs. Gregory was born in Providence, R.I., a daughter of the late Frederick N. and Laura H. Smith Bigelow. She had lived in Cranston for many years. Mrs. Gregory was a seamstress at Hancock Fabrics in East Providence.

She previously had worked in the fabric department at Wal-Mart, at So-Fro Fabrics, as a nurse's aide at Cedar Crest Nursing Home, and as a chair-side assistant at the Sargent Rehabilitation Center. Surviving are a son, Thomas F. Gregory of Cranston, R.I.; two daughters, Laurie J. Jenkins of Union and Shielaugh B. Divelbiss of Cranston, R.I.; a brother, Francis B. Sargent of Prividence, R.I.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Gregory was predeceased by a sister, Dr. Nolton F. Bigelow.

Funeral services were held Sept. 4 in the Butterfield Chapel. Burial was in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Butterfield Chapel, 500 Pontiac Ave., R.I. had charge of arrangements.

Mike Kerr

JONESVILLE - Michael Lee (Mike) Kerr, 35, of 1511 West Springs Hwy., Jonesville, died Sept. 6, 2002, at 12:55 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital from injuries received in an automobile accident. Mr. Kerr was born in Union County on July 5, 1967, a son of Pat and Barbara Hawkins Kerr of Jonesville. He was a Baptist and was formerly employed as a truck driver.

Surviving in addition to his parents are two brothers and their wives, Steve and Tiffany Kerr and Brent and Lee Kerr, all of Jonesville; and his paternal grandparents, Charles and Elaine Kerr of Jonesville; his maternal grandparents, Charles and Fannie Mae Hawkins, a nephew, Ethan Kerr and a niece, Cheyenne Kerr. Mr. Kerr was predeceased by a brother, Jeffery Scott Kerr and a nephew, Andrew Kerr. Funeral services will be held at 3 p. m. Sunday at Trinity Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Neil Keisler.

Burial will be in Jonesville Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be: Steve and Brent Kerr, Noel Moore, Jimmy Smith, Eric Eaves and Lance Whitfield. The following are asked to assemble at the church at 2:45 p. m. to form the honorary escort: Howard Kerr, Frank and David Becknell and Darryl Eaves. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 p. m. and will be placed in the church at 2 p. m. Sunday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home of his parents, Pat and Barbara Kerr, 380 Rogerstown Rd., Jonesville. The S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Dorothy S. Grady
Retired from Milliken

Dorothy Ellen Steele Grady, 73, of 324 Terry Drive, wife of Lewis M. Grady, died at her home Sept. 7, 2002 at 2:40 a.m. after an extended illness. Mrs. Grady was born in Fort Mill on April 27, 1929, a daughter of the late Harry and Lillian Nix Steele. She was a Baptist and was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant.

Surviving in addition to her husband of 57 years are two daughters and their husbands: Cheryl and Gene Harris and Felicia (Ponnee) and Mike Lovelace both of Union; two sons and a daughter-in-law: Rayford (Ray) and Beth Grady of Sealy, Texas; and Jerry (Ball) Grady of Union; two sisters, Mildred Walker of Columbia and Ruth Tankersley of Whitmire; a brother, Donald Steele of Whitmire; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Grady was predeceased by a son, Edgar Eugene (Eddie) Grady; a sister and four brothers. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Covenant Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Jack Bratton.

Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Shannon Austin, Trey Harris, Michael Harris, Mark Harris, Devin Grady and Terry Greene. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 324 Terry Drive, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Lois E. Ingle
Baptist

Lois Emory Ingle, 85, former resident of Union, widow of Oliver Ingle, died Sept. 6, 2002, in the Pleasant Care Nursing Home in San Diego, Calif., after an extended illness. Mrs. Ingle was born in Cowpens on Dec. 3, 1916, a daughter of the late Thomas H. and Julia Petty Emory. She was a graduate of Cowpens High School and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are three sons, Thomas H. Ingle and Buck Ingle both of California and John W. Ingle of Spartanburg; a step-daughter, Barbara Gonzales of Escondito, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, Scott Ingle, Adam Ingle and April Lanier all of Spartanburg, David Ingle of Columbia, Teresa Fortner of Duncan, Michelle Albanese of Milton, Fla.; Scott Gonzales and Michelle Gonzales both of Escondito, Calif.; Samuel Ingle, Chrissy Ingle and Wendy Ingle all of Columbia; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, James E. Ingle. Memorial services will be held at a dater to be announced later. The family is at the home of her son, John W. Ingle, 215 Connecticut Ave., Spartanburg. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Dean Jenkins
Retired banker

PAULINE Willard Dean Jenkins, 67, of 5404 Highway 215, Glenn Springs Community, husband of Etta Mae Mitchell Jenkins, died Sept. 6, 2002, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness. Mr. Jenkins was born in Union on March 3, 1935, the son of the late Dave Willard Jenkins and Louise Hamrick Jenkins.

He was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church of Glenn Springs. Mr. Jenkins was a 1953 graduate of Union High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1953 to 1957 and received his bachelor of arts degree in economics from the University of South Carolina in Columbia in 1963. He was retired from American Federal in Spartanburg and was well known throughout the banking communities of Union and Spartanburg.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter and her husband, Dina Jenkins Brazil and Steve Brazil of Spartanburg; and a son, Mitchell Dean Jenkins of the home. Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Robert Long and Dr. Bob Pettit.

Active pallbearers were Russell Lawson, Barry Lawson, Jeff Edens, Eric Lawson, Brett Bishop and Stanley Jenkins. The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday from 2:30-3:30 p.m. The family was at the home, 5404 Highway 215, Glenn Springs Community, Pauline.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 369, Pauline, 29374-0369 or to the Glenn Springs Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 279, Pauline, 29374. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.
