Bessie L. Jeter
Retired from school system

CARLISLE - Bessie Lyles Jeter, 75, of 114 Cambridge St., Carlisle, widow of William (Stiff) Jeter, died Sept. 6, 2002, at Piedmont Medical Center, Rock Hill. Mrs. Jeter was born in Union County on May 19, 1927, a daughter of the late Berry Thompson and Addie Lyles. She was a member of St. Luke A.M.E. Zion Church and was retired from the Union County School system as a custodian.

Surviving are three sons, William Jeter of the home, Herbert Jeter of Maryland and Curtis Jeter of Columbia; five daughters, Diane Lyles Graham, Joyce A. Jeter and Avie J. Jeter all of Maryland, Janie J. Mitchell of Herns, Texas; and Patricia J. Weathers of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, James Thompson of Alabama; three sisters, Roseanna James of Detroit, Mich.; Marie McCoy of Carlisle and Alzonia Brantley of Detroit, Mich.; 21 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at St. Luke A.M.E. Zion Church by the Rev. James Lyles and Rev. Thomas Worthy. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at the home Tuesday evening. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 114 Cambridge St., Carlisle. Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Harold R. Malmborg
Air Force veteran

Harold Ronald Malmborg, 59, of 113 Baber St., husband of Carolyn Maness Malmborg, died Sept. 6, 2002, at 12:40 p.m. in Greenville Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Malmborg was born in Union on Aug. 20, 1943, a son of the late Herbert and Annie Bell Sumner Malmborg. He was a member of Morningside Baptist Church and was a former member of the South Carolina National Guard, Union Unit.

He was a former member of the Army Reserves in Spartanburg where he served as a medic. He was in training to be an EMT at Wallace Thomson Hospital and was a former volunteer fireman with the Monarch and Bonham fire departments. Mr. Malmborg was a graduate of Union High School and was formerly employed with Torrington Company, Tyger River Plant and was a former security guard at Wallace Thomson Hospital and First Baptist Church on East Main in Spartanburg. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two stepdaughters, Linda T. Brame of Boiling Springs and Denise Trammell of Nashville, Tenn.; a stepson, Terry R. Trammell of Gaffney; a sister, Diane Howell of Union; a brother, John Malmborg of Buffalo; a step-granddaughter, Angela Bailey of Clinton; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Roger Byrd and Mr. Jim Cook. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Tommy Howell, Sean Howell, Ronnie Howell, Terry R. Trammell, Floyd Rhinehart, Thomas Brame and Scott Lewis.

The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday night from 7-8:30 p.m. The family is at the home, 113 Baber St., Union, and at the home of his sister, Diane Howell, 215 Austin St., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Tom Parks
Retired office manager

Thomas Bailey (Tom) Parks, 75, of 168 Parks Lane, husband of Ruth Smith Parks, died Sept. 9, 2002, at 12:40 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Parks was born in Union on Oct. 23, 1926, a son of the late Thomas Joseph and Carrie Lawson Parks.

He was a life-long member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Union High School and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the U.S. Army and was retired office manager for Meador Oil Company.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Wayne Crocker of Spartanburg; two sons, Tommy F. Parks of Spartanburg and Mark Parks of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, Marie Wix and Grace Barber both of Union; three grandsons and their wives, Jeff and Yvette Crocker of Spartanburg, Scott and Kathleen Crocker of Philadelphia, Pa. and Rhett and Carrie Crocker of Charlotte, N.C.; and three great-grandchildren, Rachael and Caitlyn Crocker of Spartanburg and Sophia Crocker of Philadelphia, Pa. and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family is at the home, 168 Parks Lane, Union. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Magdalene F. Matthews
Retired aide

BUFFALO - Mary Magdalene Foster Matthews, 64, of 543 Riley Road, Buffalo, wife of Paul Matthews, died at her home Sept. 9, 2002, at 11:10 p.m. Mrs. Matthews was born in Jonesville on July 11, 1938, a daughter of the late William O. and Laura Eloise Wix Foster. She was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church. Mrs. Matthews was a graduate of Union High School and was a retired aide at Oakmont Nursing Home.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters and their husbands, Patricia Lynn and Larry Knox of Jonesville, Mary Ann and Jerry Foster of Union, and Robin Darlene Castle of Union; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jackie Boulware of Buffalo and Amos (Bobo) Boulware Jr. and Debra Boulware of Union; two brothers, William Foster of Bath and Gary Foster of Buffalo; eight grandchildren, Lisa Haney, Lorie McAbee, Leslie McAbee, Johnathan Boulware, Rebecca Boulware, April Millwood, Brian Castle and Christopher Castle; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Ray Harold Belue. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Wednes-day night from 7-9. The family is at the home, 543 Riley Rd., Buffalo. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral home has charge of arrangements.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Wednesday at 3:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Members of the Men's Bible Class and Arnold Wright, Ricky Wilson, Employees of Union County Landfill Division, Donna Burnett, James Puckett, Rev. Austin Bennett, Wylie Scruggs, Roger Harris and Jack Hicks.

The family is at the home, 168 Parks Lane, Union, and will receive friends at Duncan Acres United Methodist Church tonight from 7-9. Memorials may be made to Duncan Acres United Methodist Church, 417 Rice Ave. Ext., Union, or to Union County Meals on Wheels, c/o Monte Lancaster, Arthur State Bank, Union, or to Spartanburg Regional Hospice, 120 Heywood Ave., Suite 300, Spartanburg, S.C. 29302. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Clorena S. Jennings

Clorena Stewart Jennings, 87, of 138 E. Lee St., widow of Rev. Charles Jennings, died Sept. 10, 2002, after an extended illness. Mrs. Jennings was the daughter of the late Lula Jeter and James Stewart. She was a life long resident of Lee Street, a member of St. Paul Baptist Church and Bethlehem Chapter 196 O.E.S.

Surviving are two sons, Rev. Charles Jennings Jr. of Buffalo and James F. Jennings of Union; two daughters, Catherine J. Kennedy and Charlie Mae Bobo of Union; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Gibson and Brown Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Malachi Duncan. Burial will be in the Beaty's Chapel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence and at the funeral home at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Viewing will be at the funeral home Friday from 12-8 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until the hour of service. Gibson and Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Ruben A. Curenton
Union resident

Ruben A. Curenton, known as Tiny, of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, widower of Elsie Irene Hampton Curenton, died Sept. 10, 2002. Mr. Curenton was born in Union on June 25, 1952, a son of the late Beatrice Curenton. He was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church where he was a trustee, on the Gospel Ensemble, Golden Stars, Brotherhood and Usher Board. He was a meatcutter with Bi-Lo.

Surviving are two sons, Anthony Curenton and Cedric Curenton both of Union; a daughter, Angela Curenton (Roger) Suber of Jonesville; two brothers, Tommy Curenton of Weirton, W.Va. and Richard Curenton of Asheville, N.C.; several sisters; and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Bethesda Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Public viewing will be today until 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9-11 a.m. The body will be placed in the church at 12 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of a daughter, Angela Suber, 1314 Sulfur Spring Road, Jonesville. The Union Community Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Lois Ingle Coursey
Baptist

Lois Ingle Coursey, 85, former resident of Union, widow of Oliver Ingle, died Sept. 6, 2002, in the Pleasant Care Nursing Home in San Diego, Calif., after an extended illness. Mrs. Coursey was also the widow of Norman Coursey. Mrs. Coursey was born in Cowpens on Dec. 20, 1916, a daughter of the late Thomas H. and Julia Petty Emory. She was a graduate of Cowpens High School and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are three sons, Thomas H. Ingle and Buck Ingle both of Columbia and John W. Ingle of Spartanburg; a step-daughter, Barbara Gonzales of Escondito, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, Scott Ingle, Adam Ingle and April Lanier all of Spartanburg, David Ingle of Columbia, Teresa Fortner of Duncan, Michelle Albanese of Milton, Fla.; Scott Gonzales and Michelle Gonzales both of Escondito, Calif.; Samuel Ingle, Chrissy Ingle and Wendy Ingle all of Columbia; and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Coursey was predeceased by a son, James E. Ingle of Spartanburg.

A memorial service will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Robert C. Morgan. The family will receive friends from 3-4 p.m. prior to the service at the chapel. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. The family is at the home of her son, John W. Ingle, 215 Connecticut Ave., Spartan-burg. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Audrey W. Lawson
West Springs native

WEST SPRINGS Audrey West Lawson, 69, of 4924 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, Pauline, West Springs Community, died at her residence Sept. 16, 2002, at 12:17 p.m. after an extended illness. Mrs. Lawson was the widow of Herman H. Lawson. Mrs. Lawson was born in West Springs on Feb. 21, 1933, a daughter of the late Bryan C. and Isabel West West.

She attended West Springs High School and was a member of Bogansville United Methodist Church. Mrs. Lawson is the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are three daughters and their husbands, Vicki and Darrell Kendrick of Pauline, Wanda and John Loyless of Chesnee and Alyson and Bill Varner of Pauline; three sons and their wives, Ira and Kathy Lawson, Eddie and Rhonda Lawson and Joey and Kim Lawson all of Pauline; and eight grandchildren, Lindsay and Blake Kendrick, Holly and Justin Lawson, Sydney Lawson, Travis, Tyler and Joseph Lawson.

Mrs. Lawson was predeceased by a son, Michael Ray Lawson. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Bogansville United Methodist Church by Rev. Gary Peterson, Rev. Alan West, and Dr. Henry Johnson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Kenneth Riddle, Kevin Riddle, Mark Lawson, Bryan West, Scott West, Jeff Lawson and Tim Stevens. The following are asked to assemble at the church at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Bill Dearybury, Clevie Nave, Tommy Fish, Johnny Kimbrell, Ray Vinson, Eddie Vinson, Robbie Faucett, Scott Garrett, Ricky Johns, Willis Hembree, and Gregg Hembree.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. tomorrow to await the hour of service. Memorials may be made to Bogansville United Methodist Church Building Fund, 4052 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, Jonesville, SC 29353. The family is at the home of her son, Ira and Kathy Lawson, 4932 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, Pauline. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
