George Russell Noland
Retired from S.C. National Guard

George Russell Noland, 75, of 1106 S. Pinckney St., died Sept. 16, 2002, at the Piedmont Medical Center after a brief illness. Mr. Noland was born in Union on April 11, 1927, a son of the late George Stroud and Pearl Keisler Noland. He was a graduate of Union High School Class of 1944 and was a member of the Hejaz Shrine Temple, the Union Masonic Lodge #75 where he was secretary for many years.

Mr. Noland was retired from Oilmen Equipment Co. in Spartanburg and retired from the S.C. National Guard, Union Unit. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon and taught Sunday School for several years.

Surviving are a sister, Miss Sarah Noland of the home; a nephew and his wife, George and Nancy Faucett of Shelby, N.C.; and one great-niece, Brandy Faucett of Columbia. Mr. Noland was predeceased by a sister, Molly Faucett; and a nephew, Jimmy Faucett. Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Rosemont Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Sam White, Brown Fant, Terry Fant, Jim Ballew, Robert Pinson and Steve Willard.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9. Memorials may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church, 915 S. Pinckney St., Union, or to a charity of one's choice. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Dr. Francis P. Owings

Dr. Francis Preston Owings, 97, of 101 Owings Drive, who practiced medicine for 67 years, died Monday in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Laurens County, Owings was born May 19, 1905, the son of the late Rev. Wain Marvin Owings and Lora Rebecca Patterson.

He graduated from Wofford College in 1926. He was principal of West End School in Union for two years before entering the Medical University of South Carolina. Except for five years of service with the United States Army Medical Corps in England during World War II, Owings practiced his entire career in Union.

He was a member of the Union County Medical Society, the South Carolina Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and the American Academy of General Practitioners. He served as chief of staff of Wallace Thomson Hospital for a number of years and was a medical advisor for Oakmont Nursing Home.

He was a Rotarian, Paul Harris Fellow, a former trustee of the Union County Schools and was a former member of the board of stewards of Grace United Methodist Church.

Owings was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie Cathcart (Kib) Owings, and is survived by two daughters, Eleanor Owings Burke and her husband, Edmund, of Wilmington, N.C., and Frances Owings (Deeder) Stone and her husband, Rivers, of Greenville; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two brothers, Dr. James Rembert Owings and his wife, Lillian of Greenville and Dr. Marvin Alpheus Owings and his wife, Agnes of Clemson; a sister, Rebecca Owings White of Florence; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ralph Seer Owings of Columbia.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church by Rev. Gary Byrd. The family will receive friends after the service in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, PO Box 446, Union, or to a charity of one's choice. The family is at the home, 101 Owings Dr., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Ruth Cody Tucker
Retired from Excel Hosiery

Ruth Cody Tucker, 80, widow of James E. Tucker, of 800 Perrin Ave., died Sept. 19, 2002, at the home of her granddaughter. Mrs. Tucker was born in Union on July 21, 1922, a daughter of the late William Robert and Bessie Goforth Cody. She was retired from Excel Hosiery and was a member of Hebron Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday School and was a member of the choir. Mrs. Tucker is the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are one daughter, Lana Jean Boney of Buffalo; one son, Thomas Edward Tucker of Union; five grandchildren, Lara J. Moss with whom she made her home; Michael L. Boney, Jessica R. Boney, Lisa S. Lane and Ruth Ann Tucker; six great-grandchildren, Cody Moss, Brittney Moss, Alana Grace Moss, Mitchell Lane, Shannon Lane and Timothy Tucker.

She was predeceased by a grandson, Paul E. Tucker, four sisters and two brothers. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at Hebron Baptist Church by the Rev. David Toney and Rev. Jerry Ford. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jim Russell, Hubert Sanders, Cecil Brown, Buzzy Cody, Robert Pridemore and Ben Jolly.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her granddaughter, Lara and Wayne Moss, 800 Perrin Ave., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Kathleen M. Burnett
Retired from Springs Lyman Mill

SPARTANBURG - Kathleen Mitchem Burnett, 76, formerly of 210 Rockingham Road, Duncan, widow of Benjamin Burnett Sr., died Sept. 14, 2002, at White Oak Manor. Mrs. Burnett was a native of Spartanburg County, a daughter of the late John Aaron Mitchem Sr. and Elizabeth Duncan Mitchem. She was a retired employee of Springs Lyman Mill and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are four sons, Luther (Lucky) A. McSwain Jr. and Edward Burnett both of Duncan, Jerry L. Burnett of Union and Benjamin Burnett Jr. of Spartanburg; two daughters, Vicki B. Sanders of Union and Kathy B. Tucker of Arbroath, Scotland; four brothers, Paul Mitchem Sr. and John A. Mitchem Jr. both of Duncan, J.C. Mitchem of Wellford and Ray Mitchem of Georgetown; two sisters, Ruby M. Blackwell and Lorene Parker both of Duncan; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Burnett was predeceased by a brother, Billy Mitchem. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at The Wood Mortuary by the Rev. Bill Jolly. Burial will follow in Fort Prince Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Steve Blackwell, Mark Gaddy, Nathan Dunn, Wade Crowe, Jackie Bridwell and Jeff Fowler.

Visitation will be held Tuesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. The families are at their respective homes. The Wood Mortuary has charge of arrangements.

Pearl C. Dupree
Retired from Milliken & Co.

LOCKHART Pearl Crocker Dupree, 86, widow of Griffin Dupree, formerly of Lockhart, died Sept. 16, 2002, at 1:10 a.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home. Mrs. Dupree was born in Union County on June 12, 1916, a daughter of the late Joe and Minnie Smith Crocker. She attended Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church and was retired from Milliken & Co., Lockhart Plant.

Mrs. Dupree was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by three special friends, Myrtis Young, Rhonda Gibson and Sally Horne all of Lockhart; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Dupree was predeceased by a son, Gerald Keith Dupree. Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church Cemetery by the Rev. Richard Conyers.

Employees and Staff of Oakmont Nursing Home are asked to assemble at the cemetery Wednesday at 10:45 a.m. to form the honorary escort. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7-8:30. The family will be at their respective homes. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mary H. Arrowood
Former teacher

Mary Hall Arrowood, 89, widow of Robert H. Arrowood Sr., formerly of 719 Thompson Boulevard, died Sept. 21, 2002 in Clemson Downs Health Care Center in Clemson. Mrs. Arrowood was born in Union on Jan. 26, 1913, a daughter of the late Joseph Nicholas Hall and Beulah Inez Smoak Hall.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Virginia Heath Bible Class for many years. Mrs. Arrowood was a graduate of Winthrop College and was a dedicated teacher, having taught in Union County schools for 22 years.

Surviving are two daughters, Ann A. Whitley and her husband Alton C. Whitley Jr. of Clemson and Frances A. Swan and her fiance, Max Nathan Jr. of New Orleans, La.; a son, Robert H. Arrowood Jr. of Miami, Fla.; a grandson, Alton C. Whitley III and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Whitley, both of Clemson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Gary Byrd. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Alton Clinton Whitley III, Ed Littlejohn, Jack Littlejohn, Joe Arrowood, James White and Elizabeth Ann Whitley.

The body will remain at the funeral home and will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service. The family will receive friends in the church parlor immediately following the services on Tuesday. Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 201 S. Church St., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Ernest E. Bailey Jr.
Union native

HAMPTON, TENN. Ernest Edward Bailey Jr., 56, of 106 Woodhaven Dr., Hampton, Tenn., died Sept. 20, 2002, in the Johnson City Medical Center, Johnson City, Tenn. A native of Union, he was the son of Ruth Freeman Bailey Foster of Union and the late Ernest Edward Bailey Sr. He had lived in Carter County since May 1999.

Mr. Bailey received a degree in criminal justice from the Florida International University, Miami, Fla. and a masters degree in management from St. Thomas University, Miami, Fla. He was a retired Lt. with the Miami-Dade Police Department, and a member of the First Church of the Nazarene but attended the Elizabethan Alliance Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Era and was a member of the Over Mountain Victory Trail Association.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Jeanne Haase Bailey; a daughter, April Bailey-Lyons and her husband Nathan Lyons of Greensboro, N.C.; two sons, David Bailey and his wife Cathy of St. Paul, Minn. and Matthew Bailey of the home; several aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Luis F. O'Bourke, Pastor Rick Shelton and Pastor Jim Spear officiating. Interment will be in the National Cemetery, Mountain Home. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 12 noon until the hour of service. Arthur Beaty Sr.
Union native

Arthur Beaty Sr., widower of Mary Lily Shelton Beaty, died Sept. 12, 2002. Mr. Beaty was born in Union on April 15, 1916, a son of the late Rev. James Beaty and the late Martha Duncan Beaty. He retired in 1989 from Eastern Lacquer Corp. in Malden, Mass., where he was employed for over 30 years.

Mr. Beaty was the last survivor of 11 children. Surviving are a son, Arthur Beaty Jr. and a daughter-in-law, Learline Buckner Beaty of Colts Neck, N.C.; a granddaughter, Carolyne S. Beaty of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a grandson, James D. Beaty and his wife Emmanuelle Clerisme Beaty of New Haven, Conn.; sisters-in-law, Grace Sherman, Mary Beaty and Freddie Beaty all of Union; a brother-in-law, William Shelton of Lynchburg, Va.; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Everett, Mass. by Rev. Thomas Coots. Burial will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Lynnfield, Mass. Murphy, O'Hara, Ramano Funeral Home, has charge of arrangements. Announcement courtesy of Gibson and Brown Funeral Home.
