Thomas Burton Williamson, Sr.

Former Mayor Thomas Burton Williamson, Sr. died this morning (9/27/2002) at 12:46 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Williamson, of 103 Vaughn St., Union, was the husband of Catherine Bailey Williamson. He served as Mayor of Union for 12 1/2 years. Mr. Williamson was born in Union, a son of the late J.C. and Ellen Murray Williamson.

He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, the Claude Harvey Sunday School Class, Union Lions Club and was a member of Masonic Lodge #75. Mr. Williamson was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy and was retired from the City of Union Utilities Dept.

He served one term on city council and then was elected 3 terms as mayor Debbie Foster, management services secretary with the City of Union, said city employees who had worked with Williamson were taking his death hard. "He was always soft spoken," Mrs. Foster said. "He was always a gentleman in the way he carried himself and his mannerisms. And I never saw him without a suit on."

City Administrator Charles Potts said Williamson was a fine, Christian gentleman who loved his family and Union. "Everyone knows he spent his entire life serving the public," Potts said. "He was a leader and a statesman. He had no vices, no hidden agendas. He always worked to make Union a better place. I'm honored to have known him and worked with him, but most of all I am honored he gave me his friendship. Union has suffered a great loss this day."

Councilwoman Monte Lancaster said she always enjoyed working with Williamson. "We've lost a mighty fine citizen," she said. "He's always been so sweet and good and I know Mrs. Catherine (Williamson's widow) is going to be lost without him."

Union Public Safety Chief Russell Roark said he had known Williamson for 50 years, since 1952 when Williamson was working as a Union County Sheriff's Deputy under Sheriff Rochelle Boyle. Roark said after Williamson left the sheriff's office he kept his police commission for many years and in 1958 helped organize the Union Police Club. Williamson was a lifetime member of the club.

Roark said he also enjoyed working under Williamson. "If we had any problem we could sit down and work them out and we'd always come up with a solution," Roark said. "We never had any misunderstandings. We always arrived at a solution for any problem we had."
