GIBBONS, Margaret
Margaret Jane Gibbons, 80, of Melrose, FL died Saturday, September 29, 2001 at a local hospital. Born in Detroit, Illinois and has lived in Melrose, FL for most of her life. She was a member of the Keystone Country Club and was an avid golfer. She is survived by her two daughters, Cissy Parades and Susan Wegener both of Charleston, a brother, Donald Sloan of Danville, Illinois, and three grandchildren, Courtney Parades, Nicholas Wegener and Tyler Wegener all survive her. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Melrose, FL. Memorial contributions can be sent to the American Red Cross, Disaster Relief Fund.

EASTMAN, Jean
Jean E. Eastman, 81, of Mt. Pleasant died Saturday, September 29, at a local hospital. Born in Fairhope, Ala., to the late Lee and Katherine Wade Eastman. Ms. Eastman was a retired employee with the Federal Government. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed exploring wildlife. Ms. Eastman was a member of the Unitarian Church in Charleston and also the Alhambra Hall Senior Citizen Group. She is survived by her two brothers, John W. Eastman and wife Sara, Charles H. Eastman and his wife Pat both from Columbia, a sister, Edith Eastman from Columbia and several grand-nephews and nieces survive her.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the 11:00 a.m. funeral service on Tuesday, October 2, at MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, MT. PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1520 Rifle Range Rd. SINGLETARY, Dorothy
Dorothy "Dot" Smith Singletary, 65, of Moncks Corner, a retired secretary with Home Telephone Company, died Saturday at her residence.
The funeral will be at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL, Moncks Corner. Burial will be in Berkeley Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Singletary was born August 4, 1936 in Berkeley County, a daughter of Relma T. Smith and Wilbur Hill Smith. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Moncks Corner.
Surviving are her husband, McKeever R. Singletary of Moncks Corner; two daughters, Debbie S. McCay of Moncks Corner, Karen D. Singletary of Atlanta, GA; son, Michael R. Singletary of Florence; two brothers, Jimmy Smith and Keith Smith both of Moncks Corner; four grandchildren.

JONES, Mayo
MURRELLS INLET - Mayo Lucian Jones, 78, of Goude Street, died Saturday, September 29, 2001 at a local Georgetown hospital.
Mr. Jones was born August 17, 1923 in Florence County to the late W. Spence Jones and Ellen Ether Poston Jones Taylor. He was former owner/operator of Inlet Cabinets. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Murrells Inlet where he was a former deacon and served as a former treasurer. He was also a former fireman, board member and treasurer of the Murrells Inlet/Garden City Fire Department. He was a WWII U.S. Army veteran.
He is preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Dorothy Poston Jones; two sons, Randy Jones of Connecticut, Don Jones of Murrells Inlet; six daughters, Judy Pate of Elloree, Kathy Lawkins of Charleston, Wanda Milligan of Charleston, Elaine Siedel of Socastee, Arlene Sawyer of Murrells Inlet, Tammie Clardy of Virginia; one step-brother, David Taylor of Johnsonville; 16 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 2, 2001 at First Baptist Church of Murrells Inlet.

NEAL, Margaret
LEXINGTON, S.C. - Mrs. Margaret Bell Neal, age 73, of Lexington, passed away, Saturday, September 29, 2001, at a Columbia hospital.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., Tuesday, October 2, 2001, at WOLFE FUNERAL HOME in Fort Mill. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m., at Unity Cemetery with the Rev. Joe Tysinger officiating.
Born February 1, 1928, in Fort Mill, Mrs. Neal was the daughter of the late Thornwell F. and Flonnie Shaw Bell.
Surviving are her husband, Rodney E. "Gene" Neal; her son, Keith Neal of Reston, Va.; two daughters, Linda Slay of Gray Court and Jane Neal of Mt. Pleasant; her brother, Jerry Bell of Ocean Springs, Miss.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two brothers, O'Neal Bell and Ed Bell, both of Fort Mill.

ACHESINSKI, Adam
GEORGETOWN - Adam Achesinski, 81, died Saturday, September 29, 2001, at a Georgetown hospital.
Mr. Achesinski was born in Butler, Penn., on December 24, 1919, a son of the late Webster Achesinski and Josephine Butrym Achesinski. From 1938 to 1939, he was a pitcher for a N.Y. Yankee's farm team. Mr. Achesinski served in the Army during World War II in the European Theater. After the war, he moved to Georgetown and was an employee of International Paper Company until his retirement.
Mr. Achesinski was a member of First Baptist Church, Winyah Lodge #40, Ancient Free Mason, and Omar Shrine Temple. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6444. Mr. Achesinski loved people, fishing, and dancing. He was the widower of Vencie Miller Achesinski.
Surviving are, a son, Denzil Achesinski, of Chesapeake, Va.; a brother, Raymond Achesinski of Butler, Pa.; two sisters, Helen Andrew and Steffie Schnipzki, both of Butler, Pa.; a grandson, Jeffrey M. Achesinski and his wife, April of Virginia Beach, Va.; a granddaughter, Denise A. Ralston and her husband, Brian of Virginia Beach, Va.; a great-grandson, Joseph M. Achesinski of Virginia Beach, Va.; a great-granddaughter, Amber Marie Achesinski of Virginia Beach, Va.; three sisters-in-law, Evelyn Moore and Glena Tipps, both of Georgeotwn and Bertha Moore of Durham, N.C.; two brothers-in-law, Reg K. Miller and his wife, Inez and David I. Miller, all of Georgetown; and special friends, Bonnie and David Woodberry of Andrews, Joyce Singleton, Jim and Sylvia Porywka, and Robert Graham, all of Virginia Beach, Va.
Funeral services will be Tuesday morning, October 2, 2001, at 11 o'clock at First Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Ted A. Sherrell. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery under the direction of the Georgetown Chapel of MAYER FUNERAL HOME.

LANGFORD, Philura
Mrs. Philura Varn Langford, 85, died early Saturday morning in a Beaufort health facility after an extended illness.
Mrs. Langford was born in Smoaks (Colleton County), November 19, 1915, a daughter of the late William Henry and Alexina Sauls Varn, Sr., Mrs. Langford had retired as director with the Council on Aging in Colleton County, and was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hampton, where she had been active with the Catholic Women's Club. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, and the Magnolia Garden Club.
Surviving are, two daughters, Alexina Langford Strozier, and son-in-law, Wayne A. Zuranda of Okatie, S.C., and Marguerite Castles Toyne of Cashiers, N.C.; one brother, William Henry Varn, Jr., of Smoaks; two sisters, Laurine Varn Cummings of Hampton, and Rebecca Varn Coleman of Seabrook, S.C.; and two granddaughters, Alexina Strozier Aimar of Okatie, S.C., and Kea Strozier and husband Paul Whatley of Orangeburg, S.C. There are four grandchildren. Graveside services were held Sunday at 2:30 p.m., in the Hampton Cemetery, conducted by Father Michael Hussey, and directed by PEEPLES-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME IN HAMPTON.

SUMTER, S.C. - Mrs. Catherine Souter, 43, of 335 Bowman Drive, Sumter, S.C., formerly of Moncks Corner, S.C., died September 25, 2001, at a Cola, S.C., hospital. Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Monday, October 1, 2001, at Greater St. James AME Church. Pastor Christopher Smith will officiate. Burial in the church cemetery. EUTAWVILLE COMMUNITY FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements.
Catherine Souter was born May 3, 1958, in Eutawville, S.C., to Frank and Clara Greene, her father, Frank, preceded her in death, Catherine was educated in New York City public schools. She graduated from Eli Whitney High School in June 1977. She attended Hunter College where she studied computer science. Catherine worked as a bond trader for many years with Dunn and Bradstreet Financial Compay. She also worked for the city of N.Y. as a social worker for the Medicaid Department. Catherine became a member of Calvary AME Church where she was a faithful member. Catherine later moved to Sumter, S.C., where she became a member of Bethel AME. In 1986 she united in holy matrimony to Mr. Paul Souter.
Survivors include, her two children, Master Paul Souter, Jr., and Princess Brittany Martin Souter, both of Sumter, S.C., her loving mother, Clara Greene of Moncks Corner, S.C., her loving husband, Paul Souter, six sister, Mrs. Ella Peoples of Long Island, N.Y., Mrs. Hannah Greene of Florida, Mrs. Eugenia Chestnut of Brooklyn, N.Y., Ms. Vivian Thomas of Moncks Corner, Ms. Beaulah Haden of Brooklyn, N.Y.,a nd Ms. Mamie Green of Orange, N.J., four brothers, Mr. Isaac Green of Moncks Corner, S.C., Mr. O'Neal Greene of N.Y., Mr. Kelvin Greene, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mr. Frank Greene of Bronx, N.Y.
