Freeman, John Junior

John Junior Freeman, 49, of 400 Revie Drive, Anderson, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at Anderson Area Medical Center.
Born in Abbeville County, he was a former truck driver and was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are mother, Evelyn F. Davis of Abbeville; stepfather, Roy Davis of Abbeville; and sisters, Dorothy A. Johnson and Barbara A. Davis, both of Abbeville.

He was the son of the late John Aiken.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Brown and Walker Funeral Home.

The family is at the home of his parents, 107 Nichols St., Abbeville.

Blackburn, DeLoris

DeLoris C. Blackburn, 80, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at a private nursing home.
Born in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., she was a homemaker, a member of the Cornelia First Baptist Church and the 3L Sunday school class of the church.

Surviving are son, Gene Blackburn of Gainesville, Ga.; sisters, Lucille Wright of Mount Airy, Ga., and Doris Bradley of Hendersonville, N.C.; and and two grandchildren.

She was the widow of Lewis E. Blackburn Sr. and the daughter of the late Samuel Jessie Cherry and Mary Nettie Burnette Cherry.

Services are at 3 p.m. Thursday from Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, by the Rev. Steve Doran; burial will be in B.C. Grant Baptist Church cemetery. The family received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Zettles, Vernon Sr.

WESTMINSTER - Vernon Alfred Zettles Sr., 60, of 195 Rons Place died Friday, June 1, 2001, at her residence.
Born in Jacksonville, Fla., he was employed with Thrift Brothers Lumber Company and was a member of Souls Harbor Baptist Church.

Surviving are widow, Shirley Gibson Zettles of the home; sons, Vernon Alfred Zettles Jr. of the home and James Walter Zettles of the home; daughter, Sue Ann Scales of Westminster; brother, Walter Zettles of Jacksonville, Fla.; sisters, Nancy Faye Moore of Cresent City, Fla., and Linda West of Middleburg, Fla.; and one grandchild.

He was the son of the late Walter and Thelma Hazel Brown Zettles. He was preceded in death by a brother, David Zettles; a sister, Helen Zettles; and by his grandparents who raised him, Ola and David Brown.

Services are at 11 a.m. Monday from Souls Harbor Baptist Church by the Revs. Thomas Watson and Grady Long; burial will follow in Heritage Memorial Gardens. The body is at Sandifer Funeral Home, Westminster, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

The family is at the residence.

Flowers are optional. The family suggests memorials be made to Souls Harbor Baptist Church, c/o Henrietta Baker, 670 Debra Drive, Westminster, S.C. 29693.

Smith, Patsy

EAST POINT, Ga. - Patsy Bruce Smith, 63, of 3044 Orr Drive died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at her home.
Born in Anderson, she was a homemaker and served for 36 years at the First Baptist Church of College Park, Ga.

Surviving are widower, Richard "Dick" Smith Jr. of the home; son, Richard L. Smith III of Acworth, Ga.; daughters, Kerry Phillips of Marietta, Ga., and Shanna Smith of Atlanta; mother, Cleo Walls Bruce of Anderson; sister, Ann B. Alewine of Anderson; and four grandchildren.

She was the daughter of the late Thomas Crawford Bruce.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church, College Park, Ga., with Dr. A. Hugh MacDonald; burial will be in College Park Cemetery. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Carmichael & Hemperley Funeral Home, East Point.

The family is at the home.

Smith, Carlton

ABBEVILLE - Preston Carlton Smith, 70, of 21 Preston Drive died Friday, June 1, 2001, at Anderson Area Medical Center.
Born in Abbeville County, he was a retired construction supervisor having worked with Threatt Michael Construction Company, Greenville, and Ben Jone Construction Company, Abbeville. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, Korean Conflict.

Surviving are widow, Peggy Leroy Smith of the home; sons, Steve Smith of Level Land and Jason Haskins of the home; daughters, Lisa Isbell of Anderson, Jennifer Smith of the home and Debbie Hawthorne of Level Land; sister, Jean S. Minor of Due West; and six grandchildren.

He was the son of the late Ernest and Helen Ashley Smith. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jimmy and Bobby Smith.

Services are at 2 p.m. Monday at Pruitt Funeral Home, Honea Path, by the Revs. Tommy Alewine and Michael Payne; entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Anderson. The body is at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Family members will be at their respective homes.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Shriners Hospital, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, S.C. 29605.

Ryals, Patricia

MARTIN, Ga. - Patricia Ann Ryals, 23, of Martin died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at her home.
She was born in Dade City, Fla.

Surviving are son, Kaegan Heath Outz of Martin; father, John W. Ryals of Sevierville, Tenn.; mother, Carol Belinda Smith of Martin; stepfather, T.J. Smith of Martin; and stepmother, Sue Ryals of Sevierville, Tenn.

Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hurst Chapel by the Revs. Jack Ogle and Jimmy Talley; burial will follow at Hurst Chapel Cemetery, Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville, Tenn., is in charge of arrangements.

Rutledge, Evelyn

CARNESVILLE, Ga. - Evelyn Hubbard Rutledge, 97, of 1222 Hubbard Road died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at the Brown Convalescent Center.
Born in Franklin County, she was a graduate of the University of Georgia. She taught school for many years and was a librarian at the Dalton and LaGrange public library and was a librarian at the University of Georgia. She was a member of the Georgia Education Association, Georgia Library Association and the National Library Association. She was a member of the Cross Roads Baptist Church.

Surviving are brother, Ed Hubbard of Carnesville; sister, Ruby Lois Hubbard of Royston; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was the daughter of the late Joseph Edwin and Leila Aderhold Hubbard. She was preceded in death by six sisters, Ethel McMurray, Bertha Hubbard, Marion Hubbard, Videau Harber, Lenora Gordon and Eddie Lee Williams.

Services are at 11 a.m. Monday at the B.D. Ginn Memorial chapel by the Rev. Michael Bell and Clarence Davis; interment in the Cross Roads Baptist Church cemetery. The body is the Ginn Funeral Home, Carnesville, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

The family will be at the home of Ed and Jimmie Hubbard, 1540 Hubbard Road, Carnesville.

Ruff, Charles

ELBERTON, Ga. - Charles W. Ruff, 78, of 1919 Lexington Highway died Friday, June 1, 2001, at Elbert Memorial Hospital.
Born in Elbert County, he was the owner and operator of Charles Ruff Hardware for 31 years. He was a member of Falling Creek Baptist Church, where he served as deacon for 62 years. He was a veteran of World War II, served as the first chief of Elbert County Volunteer Fire Department, was a member of the Gideons, served on the board of Family and Children's Services for 35 years, was on the Elbert County Hospital Board for 14 years and was chairman for one term, was on the Elbert Memorial Hospital Foundation and was on the Advisory Board of The Salvation Army.

Surviving are daughters, Amanda R. Crawford of Bogart, Claudia R. McDowell of Elberton and Mary R. Yeargin of Winterville; brothers, Albert M. Ruff of Bowman and James W. Ruff of Elberton; sisters, Elizabeth R. Fortson, Barbara R. Barger, Peggy R. Greenway and Theresa R. Albertson, all of Elberton; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two stepgrandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

He was the husband of Betty Thomason Huff and the son of the late Martin C. and Victorine Jones Ruff. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wallace D. Ruff.

Services are at 3 p.m. Sunday at Falling Creek Baptist Church by the Revs. Harold Walter, Jack McVeigh and Steve Forsythe; interment will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery. The body is at Hicks Funeral Home, Elberton, where the family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

The family will be at the home, 1919 Lexington Highway.

Flowers are optional. The family suggests memorials be made to Elbert Memorial Hospital Foundation, The Salvation Army or the Gideons Society.

Posey, Alma

TOWNVILLE - Alma Davis Posey, 81, of 437 Smith Road died Friday, June 1, 2001, at her residence.
Born in Anderson, she was a homemaker and a member of Double Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving are sons, George W. Posey of Augusta, Ga., and Jerry C. Posey of Pendleton; daughters, Edna P. Slaton and Margaret P. McAlister, both of Townville; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of Raymond Herbert Posey and the daughter of the late LaFayette Wesley Davis and Ella Smith Davis. She was preceded in death by a son, John F. Posey; a daughter, Nancy P. Brown; and a grandson.

Services are at 3 p.m. Sunday at Double Springs Baptist Church, Townville, by the Revs. Joe Bill Posey and W. Crate Murphy; burial will be in the church Cemetery, Townville. The body is at The McDougald Funeral Home, Anderson, where the family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

The family will be at the residence, 437 Smith Road, Townville.

Hamby, Hailey

Hailey Byrum Hamby, 91, of 503 Hill St., Anderson, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Anderson Area Medical Center.
Born in Hartwell, Ga., she was a member of Southside Baptist Church and was a housewife.

Surviving are sons, Harold Edward Hamby, Johnny Hamby, Gerald Hamby, Michael Hamby and Terry Hamby, all of Anderson, and Boyce Hamby of Cicero, Ind.; daughters, Frances Carver of Anderson, Ind., Shelby McAlister and Linda Dutton, both of Anderson, and Helen Knight of Loganville; brothers, Andrew Byrum of Hartwell, Ga., and John Byrum Jr. of Anderson; sisters, Blanche Dyar and Bonnie Sanford, both of Anderson, and Jewel Carnes of Hartwell, Ga.; 38 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of Andrew Steven Hamby and the daughter of the late John W. Byrum and Effie Dora Carnes Byrum. She was preceded in death by two sons, Larry and Kenneth Hamby.

Services are at 4 p.m. Sunday at The McDougald Funeral Home; burial will be in New Silverbrook Cemetery, Anderson. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

The family is at the residence.

Hall, Selma

Selma Robinson Hall, 89, of 805 W. Franklin St., Anderson, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Anderson Area Medical Center.
Born in Anderson, she was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where she served as a member of the Senior Choir, Deaconess Board, Women's Missionary and the Adult Sunday school class. She was also an active member of the Jim Ed Rice Senior Citizens Group and a member of the Outreach Ministry.

Surviving are son, Bobby Hall of Anderson; daughters, Zora Reed, Patsy Mattison, Johnnie Mae Rogers, Peggy Garrison and Gloria Johnson, all of Anderson, and Judy Gistand of Cleveland; sisters, Ophelia Parker of Anderson, Edna Griffin of East Orange, N.J., and Charlie Mae Keareas of Sommerset, N.J.; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of Marcell Hall and the daughter of the late John B. and Rosa Boseman Robinson.

Services are at 3 p.m. Monday at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church by the Revs. Otis Cunningham, Johnny Goldsmith, B.T. Cunningham, James Speed and Minister Ella Harrison; burial is in Westview Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Monday. The family will receive friends from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at D.B. Walker & Co. Funeral Services.

Cheek, Sarah

HARTWELL, Ga. - Sarah Margaret Temple Cheek, 83, of 313 Blackberry Drive, Decatur, Ala., formerly of Hartwell, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, in Decatur.
Born in Hart County, she was a member of the Mt. Hebron Baptist Church, Hartwell, and attended Central Park Baptist Church, Decatur.

Surviving are widower, Charles Edward Cheek Sr. of the home; son, Eddie Cheek of Sandersville; daughter, Connie King of Decatur, Ala., brothers, Jim Dodd Temple and Inman Temple of Hartwell; sisters, Lorene Bradberry and Louise Cordell of Hartwell; and five grandchildren.

She was the daughter of the late Reese Cleveland Temple and Mary Magnolia Frye Temple. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Perry and J.C. Temple; and two sisters, Ruth Moorhead and Sue Floyd.

Services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the chapel of the Strickland Funeral Home, Hartwell, by the Rev. Ray Black; burial in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park. The body is at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday prior to the service.
