MAUNEY, Mary Frances
CHERRYVILLE, N.C. - Mrs. D.R. Mauney, Jr., age 87, of 301 Old Post Road, Cherryville, N.C., died Wednesday, October 10, 2001, at a Charleston hospital. She was a native of Hickory, N.C., daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Whitfield Bagby. Retired from the Gaston County Schools System, she was head of the Cherryville Guidance Department. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, David Rudisill Mauney, Jr., a sister, Mrs. Frankie Bagby Setzer of Shelby, N.C., a brother, Charles A. Bagby, of Hickory, N.C.
She carved out a life of exemplary service to her home, community, church and employment, member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Cherryville, N.C., 50 years service to Pioneer Council, Troop Leader and Senior Leader of Girl's and Brownie Scouts, NCEA, graduated from Hickory's Claremont Central High, Lenoir Rhyne College, Cum Laude, Appalachian State University, graduate school, UNC Chapel Hill Master's Degree, Gaston College, real estate, member of N.C. Association of Realtors, public school teacher, Sunday School teacher. Despite her strong interest and participation in community endeavors and her professional achievements, Mrs. Mauney saw herself first as a wife and mother, listing those jobs as her chief occupation.
Survivors are, four daughters, Mrs. Troy (Martha) Moses, of Dalton, Ga., Caroline Mauney, Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Mrs. Ronald (Anna Catherine) Spence, Virginia Beach, Va., Mrs. John (Harriet) Cordray, Jr., Charleston, S.C.; grandchildren, David Phillips, Kay Phillips, Lura and Rodney Cummings, all of Dalton, Ga., Carson Spence, of Virginia Beach, Va., John William Cordray, III, of Charleston, S.C.; great-grandchildren, David Luke Phillips and Ian Thomas Cummings, both of Dalton, Ga.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, October 14, 2001, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Cherryville, with Rev. Luther Roof and Rev. Harold K. Skinner officiating. Burial will be in the Mauney Family Plot of the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, Saturday, October 13, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

HOLLY HILL - Mrs. Louise Barfield Mitchum, 84, of 119 Preston Road, Holly Hill, S.C., died Friday at her home. Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 14, 2 p.m., at First Pentecostal Holiness Church, Holly Hill, S.C. Rev. Venning Long, Rev. Barry Owens, and Rev. Mike Lowry will officiate. Burial in church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.
Mrs. Mitchum was born February 9, 1917, in Lake City, S.C., a daughter of the late Patrick Barfield and Mrs. Minnie Welch Barfield. She was a Baptist and the widow of Steve Mitchum.
Survivors include, six daughters, Mrs. Pearline Koone of Reddick, Fla., Mrs. Myrtle Robinson of Moncks Corner, Mrs. Rebecca Barrickman of Ridgeville, Mrs. Linda Henderson of High Point, N.C., Mrs. Stella Roden of Anthony, Fla., and Mrs. Evelyn Cook of Moncks Corner; two sons, Heyward Mitchum of Orange Lake, Fla., and Steve B. Mitchum of Ravenel; a sister, Mrs. Hattie Parker of Kingstree; 38 grandchildren; 82 great-grandchildren, and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

ROWELL, John
Mr. John Everett Rowell, 74, of 304 Catterton Lane, Yemassee, died Friday afternoon in the Harper Nursing Center in Estill, after an extended illness.
Mr. Rowell was born in Clyo, Ga., May 19, 1927, and had retired from Cooper Industries as a Supervisor. He was a Navy Veteran and was a member of the Calf Pen Hunting Club in Yemassee. He was the son of the late Nina R. Runnion of Hampton.
Private Memorial services will be held at a later date.

MILLER, Eloise
GREELEYVILLE - Eloise Dennis Miller, 79, wife of Melvin Miller, Sr., died Friday at a Kingstree hospital.
Born May 4, 1922, in Greeleyville, she was a daughter of the late Cokley and Molsie Wilson Dennis. She was retired from Kingstree Manufacturing Co., and was a member of Greeleyville Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving besides her husband of Greeleyville, are a son, Melvin T. "Tommy" Miller, Jr., of Greeleyville; a daughter, Carolyn McKnight of Greeleyville; a sister, Cora Gamble White of Greeleyville; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Irene Brown; two grandchildren, Roger Brown and Sherri Osborne.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, at Greeleyville Freewill Baptist Church. Rev. Freddie Gaymon and Rev. Darrel Langston will officiate. Burial will follow in Greeleyville Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, at Stephens Funeral Home, Manning, and at other times at the residence in Greeleyville.

Mrs. Creech was born September 10, 1926, in Summerville, S.C., the daughter of William Preston Addison, Jr., and Mamie Rhode Addison. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and a member of the Clyburn Guild. Her years of employment included Southern Bell, Roper Hospital, Yaschik Mortgage Company, Grimball and Cabaniss, Attorneys at law and South Carolina National Bank. She was a member of Elizabeth Temple #2 Pythian Sisters.
She is survived by two sisters, Madge A. Crosby of Round O, S.C., and Mary A. Adams of Charleston, S.C.; one brother, George Allen Addison of Round O, S.C. Her daughter, Deborah Sparks LeGette, predeceased her.

Entered into eternal rest on the morning of October 11, 2001, Chief Petty Officer First Class John Wallace Schmidt, United States Navy (retired) husband of Antoinette Jensen Schmidt. Residence, Goose Creek, S.C. The relatives and friends of Chief Petty Officer and Mrs. John Wallace Schmidt are invited to attend the funeral services of the former in J. Mr. Schmidt was born February 2, 1928, in Beaver Dam, Wisc., a son of the late John Antoin and Mildred Barnhardt Schmidt. Chief Schmidt was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and the Viet Nam War and had served his country for 22 years, and later worked in civil service at the Naval Weapons Station, Charleston, S.C., and was a member of the American Legion, a Mason, and Shriner.
Surviving are, his wife of Goose Creek, S.C., five daughters, Karen Holmes of Goose Creek, S.C., Linda Williams of Round-O, S.C., Carole Robertson of Fredericksburg, Va., Marylou Deane and Amy O'Brien, both of Goose Creek, S.C.; four sons, Pete Goetz of Garden City, Calif., Michael Goetz of Verdi, Nev., Donald B. Goetz of Fairfield, Ohio, Mark Schmidt of Van Nuys, Calif.; a sister, Lois Tesch of Horicon, Wisc. Dear to him are his grandchildren, Melodee, Bubba, Travis, Karrie, Joshua, Megan, Ashley, Blake, Devon, Shawn, Kristy, Rachele, Courtney, Charlest and Nicholas; great-grandchildren, Brittanee, Marissa, Michael, Joseph, Hunter, Noah, and Jackson. Chief Schmidt was also preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Haley.

A son of Richard L. McIntire and Aileen MacMillin Kasenenko. Chief McIntire served his country for twenty years in the U.S. Navy and a View Nam veteran and worked with the Berkeley County Sheriffs Department as a Sergeant in the Detention Center. Mr. McIntire was an active member of The American Legion, Post #166, Goose Creek, SC, the forty and eight, the Fleet Reserve Association and the Goose Creek Masonic Lodge #401 A.F.M.
Surviving are his mother of Tucson, AZ, his wife of Goose Creek, SC, two daughters, Kellie McIntire and Kerrie Stramler both of Tucson, AZ, two sons, Adam McIntire of Goose Creek, SC, Brian McIntire of Las Vegas, Nevada, two brothers, Douglas MacMillin or Rockport, Mass, Peter Kasenenko of San Francisco, Ca. and his caretaker and sister-in-law Brenda Markielowski.

Mr. Hewitt was born in El Paso, Texas. He attended Stratford High School and was a Commercial Truck Driver.

Carl Leroy Adams, 62, husband of Eileen Adams, died on September 22, 2001 at his residence in North Charleston. Mr. Adams was born in California and was a US Marine Corps veteran.
Surviving, besides his wife of North Charleston are his stepmother, Harriet Adams, 14 children, 9 stepchildren and 40 grandchildren. He also leaves behind Ashley, Robert, Lana, Terry, David, Jerry, Shawn, Laura, Bud, Rev. Leroy Bowers, Betty, Steve, Mandy, Linda, Stephen, Carol Ann and Jerry Furl who are close friends.

AIKEN - Mrs. Maria Hertwig Durban died October 12, 2001, at her residence. She was born in Statesboro, GA, on March 9, 1921, of the Rev. Edward J. and Maria Palmer Hertwig. She was raised in Macon, GA, and attended Wesleyan College. She married Frampton W. Durban of Aiken in 1942, and settled in Aiken after the end of World War II. For many years, she was the reference librarian at the Aiken County Library. She was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Junior Student Club, two afternoon bridge clubs and Bridge-A-Rama. Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Frampton Wyman Durban; two daughters, Pam Durban of Chapel Hill, NC and Maria Durban of Folly Beach, SC; one son, Frampton Durban, Jr. of Mt. Pleasant, SC; two grandchildren, Wylie Durban Hunter and Katie Durban; a son-in-law, Frank H. Hunter, Jr. of Chapel Hill; a daughter-in-law, Cori Durban of Mt. Pleasant; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Lieser had been employed as a machinist with General Dynamics Company until his retirement and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Goose Creek, SC.
Surviving are his son, Willard N. Lieser of Lebanon, Tn., his daughters, Elaine Cole of Williamstown, NY, Beverly Nittler of Fontana, Ca., step-daughters, Betty Taylor of Goose Creek, SC, Helen Sanborn of Newport News, Va., and Margaret Trumble of Upland, Ca. Eighteen grandchildren, twenty seven great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Mr. Lieser was preceded in death by his wife, Allie Dill Smith Lieser and a daughter, Mildred Biddle.
