Elizabeth LaBruce Mitchell, 46, of Portland, Org., formerly of Charleston, S.C., died Wednesday evening at a local Oregon hospital. She was born in Charleston, a daughter of John Magill Mitchell and Edith LaBruce Mitchell of Mount Pleasant. Survivors include her parents; two sisters, Edith M. Blair and Ann M. Burger, both of Mt. Pleasant, an aunt, Virginia W. Mitchell of Charleston, one nephew, and one niece. William Howell Fleetwood, 86, of Summerville, S.C., died Friday, November 16, 2001, at a local hospital.

Mr. Fleetwood was born October 19, 1915, in Jackson, N.C., a son of the late William Clarence Fleetwood and Elvie Howell Fleetwood. He was a retired Chief Warrant Officer (W-4) USAF, serving in WWII and Korea, and a member of Summerville Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Isabel Gay Fleetwood, of Summerville, son, William H. Fleetwood, II, of Saudi Arabia, daughter, Betty F. Harris of Summerville, brother, Henry Fleetwood of Seaboard, N.C., a sister, Faye Attkisson of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., four grandchildren, William T. Cantrell of Mt. Pleasant, Christopher B. Cantrell, Sr., of Summerville, Paul S. Cantrell of Columbia, and William H. Fleetwood, III of Texas, four great-grandchildren, Christopher B. Cantrell, Jr., of Summerville, Madison G. Cantrell of Mt. Pleasant, Tyler B. Fleetwood and Savannah L. Fleetwood, both of Texas. Mr. Fleetwood was predeceased by a grandson, Michael F. Cantrell.

Master Sgt. Howard Francis Frye, Sr., U.S. Air Force, Ret., 87, of Bonneau, S.C., died Sunday in a Charleston hospital.

Master Sgt. Frye was born March 26, 1914, in Duffy, Ohio, a son of Grover Cleveland Frye and Alice Smith Frye. He served in W.W.II, Korea, and Vietnam. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Bonneau, where he was also a member of the Keen Club. He was a graduate of Magnolia High School, New Martinsville, W.Va., and he attended West Virginia University.
Surviving are, two sons, Howard F. Frye, Jr., of Guyton, Ga., and Timothy Douglas Frye of Bonneau; a sister, Nancy Tusic of New Martinsville, W.Va.; a brother, Kenneth Frye of Steelton, W.Va.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and several close friends, Belle Pipkin, Frances Butler, Elliott and Geneva Kessler, and Ira and Barbara Beach.

Rev. Algie A. Lawson, Jr., 89, widower of Corrie Belle Nelson Lawson, died Monday, November 19, 2001, at a local nursing home after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 21, at Nebo Baptist Church, with Rev. Bill Hancock officiating. Burial will follow in Nebo Baptist Church Cemetery, directed by SMITH-COLLINS FUNERAL HOME.
Rev. Lawson was born February 24, 1912, in Laurens County, a son of the late Algie A. Lawson, Sr., and the late Elizabeth McCravy Lawson. Rev. Lawson was a retired Baptist minister, having pastored for over 50 years in churches in South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. He was a graduate of Furman University and Southwestern Seminary. Rev. Lawson was a member of Nebo Baptist Church.
Surviving Rev. Lawson are, two daughters, Lynette Lawson Reason and her husband Wayne of Brittons Neck, and Aileene Lawson Tuten and her husband Wilbur of Estill; four grandchildren, Susan Hartzog and her husband Brian of Rincon, Ga., Sam Tuten and his wife Kim of Pamlico, Ricky Burch and his wife Carrie of Fayetteville, N.C., and Tonya Wollschleger and her husband Jason of Rochester, N.Y., and six great-grandchildren.

Technical Sergeant Donald Jack "Don" Wixon, U.S. Air Force (Ret.), 67, of Summerville, husband of Phyllis J. Trinkle Wixon, died Sunday morning at his residence.

Mr. Wix was born on June 14, 1934, in Ada, Okla., a son of the late Jack Wixon and Elizabeth Rice Wixon Scott of Hinton, Okla.
Don graduated from high school in Ada, Okla. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War and retired after more than 20 years of service. He was a retired real estate agent.
Surviving are, his wife, Phyllis J. Wix of Summerville; his mother; two sons, Chris Maiden of Ladson, Todd Maiden of Summerville; one sister, La Neitha Daggs of Hinton, Okla.; one brother, Alfred Patton of Liberal, Kans.; three grandchildren.

WERTZ, Eunice
Mrs. Eunice Orr Wertz, 93, widow of the late Dr. John Alexander Wertz, died Saturday afternoon in a Charleston hospital, after a brief illness.
Mrs. Wertz was born in Anderson, S.C., August 31, 1908, a daughter of the late James Lawrence Orr and Irene Wilson Orr. She was a graduate of Greenville Women's College, now Furman University, she spent 52 years in Estill, before moving to the Presbyterian Retirement Home in 1986. She was a former teacher at the Estill High School.
Surviving are, daughter and son-in-law, Janice Wertz Berkley, and husband, Robert, of Lynchburg, Va.; one brother, Dr. Wilson Orr of Anderson; and two grandchildren, Meredith Anne Berkley and William Bradley Berkley. Graveside services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, in the Lawtonville Cemetery in Estill, conducted by Rev. Frank Sells and directed by PEEPLES-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME IN HAMPTON.

CROSBY, Ralph
Colonel Ralph D. Crosby, U.S. Army (Ret.), was born in Walterboro, S.C., on the 24 of January, 1917, the son of Dozier and Vinitia Crosby. The relatives and friends of Col. and Mrs. Ralph Dozier Crosby are invited to attend the funeral services Wednesday at 11 o'clock in the First Baptist Church of Charleston. He grew up in the Low Country, attending Brunson High School, graduated from Clemson in 1938, where he earned letters in baseball as a pitcher and centerfielder, as commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and served three years in the European Theater during World War II. In North Africa, he served as a Tank Destroyer Company Commander, participated in liberation of Tunisia. His unit's liberation of Bizerte contributed in a major way to preventing the German Army's retreat to the Mediterranean. Colonel Crosby also participated in the invasion of Italy, serving again in the Tank Destroyers prior to moving to England to begin preparation for the Normandy invasion. He entered continental Europe on Utah Beach as the VII Corps Anti-tank Officer and remained in that capacity until victory in Europe. After serving a brief tour in California, he moved back to Clemson to serve as the Assistant Commandant of Cadets and later served as Commandant. Following Clemson, Col. Crosby moved to Fort Jackson where he served as Chief of Staff of the 8th Infantry Division. After Fort Jackson he served in Thailand, the Pentagon, Alaska, the Armed Forces Staff College, the War College and Korea. He completed his 28 years in the Army serving his final tour as Chief of ROTC for the Army at the Continental Army Command at Fort Monroe, Va. Upon retirement, Col. Crosby was appointed Assistant Commandant of Cadets at the Citadel, where he served for 13 years. After retiring from the Citadel, he and his wife of 60 years, Anna Margaret Salley Crosby, continued to make their home in Charleston. Col. and Mrs. Crosby have six children, Patricia Anne Crosby Helwig of Jacksonville, Fla., Ralph D. Crosby, Jr., of Dallas, Texas, Robert Henry of Chapin, S.C., David Michael of the Isle of Palms, Peter Anthony Crosby of Atlanta, Ga., and LTC William Timothy Crosby of Huntsville, Ala.
The Crosbys have 13 grandchildren, Tricia Todd, Griffin Helwig, Lara Crosby, Ralph Crosby, III, Ben Crosby, Sean Crosby, Brittany Crosby, Carrie Crosby, David Crosby, Jr., Jeremey Crosby, Rebecca Crosby, Sara Crosby, and Will Crosby.
Colonel Crosby was an avid sportsman, never missing an opportunity to hunt and fish and share the fellowship with family and friends. Additionally Col. Crosby's childhood love of baseball stayed with him his entire life. From his first day at the Citadel, he was a strong supporter of the Citadel's Baseball team, a passion he maintained long after retirement. Ralph always claimed his and Anna Margaret's greatest accomplishment to be six children, all college graduates, all successful professionals forming a close extended family.
