COLUMBIA - Service for Margaret Elizabeth Fairey Hastings, 76, will be held Saturday, December 1, at 11 a.m. at Eastminster Presbyterian Church. Margaret will be interred next to her parents at Mount Olive Cemetery, Johnston, S.C., at 2:30 p.m. All who wish to attend are invited. Mrs. Hastings died Tuesday, November 27, 2001 under Hospice care. She was born in Johnston, S.C. on August 26, 1925, and was the daughter of the late Dr. Thomas Keller Fairey originally of St. Matthews, S.C. and his wife, the late Rosa Muckenfuss Fairey originally of Charleston, S.C.
Margaret graduated from Johnston High School, attended Winthrop College and graduated with a B.S. degree in Nursing from Duke University in 1947. She received her Masters Degree in Counseling from the University of South Carolina in Columbia where she was a fully tenured Professor of Nursing for 18 years. Margaret worked in labor and delivery at both Providence Hospital and Baptist Hospital in Columbia. She also instructed nursing for many years at the Baptist Hospital. She was a past president of NACOG and also taught emergency childbirth to the S.C. Highway Patrol officers. Margaret was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church and was one of the founding families.
Margaret had many friends, both personally and professionally. She touched the lives of many and was loved by all who knew her. Her students praised her for her patience and her rich sense of humor, and her co-workers praised her for her knowledge, strength, courage, mentoring, friendship and kindness. She will be missed greatly by her family and friends, but she will always be with them in their hearts and their memories.
Surviving are her loving, devoted husband and best friend, Richard Owen "Dick" Hastings of Columbia, S.C.; her loving daughters, Margaret Keller Hastings of Aiken, S.C. and Jean Hastings Thompson of Dallas, Texas; her son-in-law, E. Earle Thompson of Dallas, Tex.; her four adoring granddaughters, Stephanie Jean Bailey of Aiken, S.C., Rachel Michelle Thompson, Sara Carolyn Thompson, and Elizabeth Christine Thompson, all of Dallas, Tex.; and her adoring great-granddaughter, Kayla Nicole Sullivan of Aiken, S.C. She is also survived by her devoted sister and friend, Jean Fairey Brown, and her brother-in-law, Chaplain Jonathan Cleveland "J" Brown, II, of Greenville, S.C.; her nephews who were like her sons to her, Jonathan C. Brown, III, and Michael K. Brown and their families, all of the Greenville,
S.C. area. Also left behind are her cousins, Dr. Phillip W. Fairey of Columbia, S.C., Joseph K. Fairey, Sr., of St. Matthews, S.C., John Fairey of College Station, Tex. and the late Dr. Frank S. Fairey, Sr., of Rock Hill, S.C. and their families.

Mittie Brooks Skelton, 84, of Pinewood Dr., Moncks Corner, S.C., died Wednesday in a North Charleston hospital.

Mrs. Skelton was born July 24, 1917, in Royston, Ga., a daughter of Frank Brooks and Lena Crow Brooks. She is the widow of David Eugene Skelton. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Moncks Corner, and of the senior citizens group at the church. She was a former employee of West's Red & White. She attended Piedmont College.
Surviving are four daughters, Frances D. Harrison, Milene D. Steward, and Lena Jo Starkey Sligh all of Moncks Corner, and Debbie S. Sweatman of Pinopolis; and 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

RUFFIN - Mr. Ira E. "Sonny" Player, 67, of 7017 Bells Highway died Tuesday at Colleton Medical Center. Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Beaufort National Cemetery, directed by the Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home.
Mr. Player was born in Greeleyville, a son of the late James Ira Player and Sarah Hudnall Player. He retired as a Chief Master Sergeant with the U.S. Air Force after serving his country for 26 years. He was a member of Bells Masonic Lodge #236, a member of the York Rite, a member of the Shriners, a member of the V.F.W., a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association, and was a member of the Marine Corp Reserve before entering the Air Force.
Surviving are his wife, Noriko O. Player, a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Mitzi Player of Fredericksburg, Virginia, son, Donald Player of Columbia, brother, William C. "Bill" Player of Orangeburg, sisters, Frances Hallman of Boston, Georgia and Elizabeth Krontz of Four Oaks, North Carolina, and three grandchildren, Jessica Player, Candace Player, and Brendan Player.

MCDANIEL, Helen
GREENVILLE, S.C. - Helen Cobb McDaniel, 95, of 2020 East North Street, died November 27, 2001 in Charleston.
Born in Spartanburg County, she was the daughter of the late A. Styles and Hattie Brown Cobb.
Mrs. McDaniel attended public school in Anderson, S.C., attended Cecil's Business School and worked for a local insurance agency. She retired in 1996, at the age of 90, as an underwriter for Canal Insurance Company. She was active in the work of the S.C. Association of Insurance Women, and in 1967 was awarded the states' highest honor in her field, "Insurance Woman of the Year."
She was a member of Pendleton Street Baptist church, an active leader in the WMU and teacher of the Young Married People's Class.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Carole M. and Rev. Charles Martin of Charleston; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Bill Penick officiating.

BOWERS, Randolph
Randolph Samuel Bowers, 92, of Waynesboro, Virginia, died November 29, 2001 in a Mt. Pleasant hospital. Mr. Bowers was recently a resident at Baldwin Park in Staunton, Virginia. He was born January 17, 1909 near Timberville, Virginia and was a son of Samuel Casper and Sarah Emily Campbell Bowers.
Mr. Bowers was retired after forty years of employment with E.I. Dupont in Waynesboro. He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served in the South Pacific during World War II. Mr. Bowers was a long time member of Glovier Memorial United Methodist Church.
On February 19, 1938, he married the late Mary Kate Crider. He is survived by a son, Randy, and his wife, Debbie of Mount Pleasant, S.C., a brother, Leighton Bowers of Waynesboro, Va., a sister, Ruby Tuner, of Broadway, Va.; three grandchildren, Jordan Bowers, Nathan Bowers, and Rachel Bowers; and number of nieces and nephews.

Belle was born in Baltimore, Md., on December 5, 1955, the daughter of Harold D. and Elizabeth Ruth Glenn Mintz. She attended Trident Technical College and was a member of Remount Baptist Church.
Her husband, Timothy J. Killian and her daughters, Chelsey and Rebecca survive her, both of the home. Her sisters, Barbara White of Cedartown, Ga., and Beth Frederick of Lindale, Ga.; her step-children, Sonja Killian of Normal, Ill., Tamara Killian of Columbia, S.C., Brittany Killian of Goose Creek, and Jason Robinson of Niantic, Conn., and 17 nieces and nephews also survive.

Born in Sellersville, Pa., to the late Frank and Ada Bailey Souder. She was married to the late Clarence Y. Johnson. Her son, C. Barry Johnson of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., three brothers, Harry Souder of Ocala, Fla., Harold Souder of New Jersey, and Robert Souder, of Perkasie, Pa., two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren all survive Mrs. Johnson. The family will receive friends, 10 to 11 a.m., Monday, December 3, at St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Sellersville, Pa. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. in the church.
