DEWITT, Lorraine
Lorraine DeWitt, 64, of Charleston, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, November 29, 2001, at a local hospital. Born August 5, 1937, in Wakefield, Mass., she was the daughter of Henry and Mary Subzda (nee Ferry). A graduate of Chicora High School, Mrs. DeWitt was employed by K-Mart for 17 years. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and was an active volunteer with the church. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Ronald R. DeWitt, three children, Donna Wilson of Charleston, Ronald DeWitt, Jr., of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Darrell DeWitt of Rock Hill, S.C.; her mother, Mary Robbins of Summerville; two sisters, Joyce Grover of New Jersey and Kathleen Parsons of Maryland; her brother, Kevin Robbins of Charleston, and six grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held, 10 a.m., Monday, December 3, 2001, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, James Island. COWARD, Vernon
BLYTHEWOOD - Memorial service for Mr. Vernon R. "Rudy" Coward, 63, of Blythewood, will be held at 4 o'clock, Sunday afternoon, December 2, 2001, in Trinity United Methodist Church, Blythewood, S.C., conducted by Reverend Catherine Jamieson-Ogg and Reverend Robert Howell. Visitation will follow service at the church in the Christian Life Center. Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, P.O. Mr. Coward died Thursday, November 29, 2001. Born in Spartanburg, S.C., he was the son of Vernon and Violet Parker Coward. He was a graduate of Brookland Cayce High School, 1958, and the University of South Carolina, 1964. Mr. Coward was employed at SCE&G (SCANA) from 1965 to 1989. He was, perhaps, best remembered as the company spokesperson for many years. Rudy was promoted through various management positions and headed the Corporate Communications Department for approximately 18 years, becoming Vice President in 1982. In 1986, he was promoted to Vice President of Operations where he was responsible for six departments. Rudy received many honors and awards, some to include: the American Advertising Federation Silver Medal Award, American Advertising Federation Aid to Education Award; twice named National Communicator of the Year by the Public Utilities Communicators Association; won in excess of 100 public relations and advertising awards in local, national and international competition; and named "Who's Who in the South."
Rudy held many different offices in professional, civic and social organizations during his career, some include, Fairfield Chamber of Commerce, Board of Directors; United Way of the Midlands, Board of Trustees, Division Chairman; Richland County Family Court, Board of Directors; S.C. Multiple Sclerosis Association, State Chairman; S.C. Broadcasters Association; S.C. Press Association; Alpha Delta Sigma, Professional Advertising Fraternity; President, Columbia Advertising Club; Sigma Delta Chi, Professional Journalism Society; Public Utilities Communicator Association, Regional Chairman; Columbia Media Club; Society for Communicating Arts; Curriculum Advisor, College of Journalism, USC; Instructor, Public Relations, USC; Columbia Lions Club; Columbia Chamber of Commerce (Outstanding Service Award); Trinity United Methodist Church (Blythewood). Various leadership positions; S.C. Environmental Foundation; Junior Achievement of Greater Columbia, Advisor; Edison Electric Institute; Columbia Sail Club; Congaree Girl Scout, Board of Directors. Mr. Coward was an U.S. Air Force Veteran of the Berlin Crisis.
Survivors are his wife, Anne Frick Coward, three children and their spouses; Mark and Shawn Coward, Michael and Rhonda Coward, Glen and Sabra Lott; two sisters, Dianne Senn and her husband, Robert, Beverly Whitworth and her husband, Al. Rudy had six grandchildren, Brandi, Christopher, Gabrielle, Delson, Kyle Rudy and McKenzie.

GEISHKING, Catherine
Mrs. Catherine Rushing Geishking, 85, widow of the late Charles C. Geishking, of 411 Lawton Ave., Savannah, Ga., died Thursday in a Marietta, Ga., nursing home after an extended illness.
Mrs. Geishking was born July 29, 1916, in Estill, a daughter of the late Benjamin T. Rushing and Lucy Solomons Rushing. She was a retired school teacher, having taught in Gifford, Bluffton, and Savannah. She was a member of Wesley Monumental Methodist Church and also attended the Estill United Methodist Church.
Surviving are, daughter and son-in-law, Cathie and Roger Phillips of Lilburn, Ga.; a brother, Benjamin T. Rushing of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two grandsons, Noel and Beth Phillips of Marietta, Ga., and Charles Phillips of Atlanta; two great-granddaughters, Emily and Valerie Phillips. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, in the Estill United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Mike Written with burial in Lawtonville Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday evening, 6 to 8 p.m., in the Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, Estill Chapel. Also immediately following the service the family will receive friends in the social hall of the Estill United Methodist Church. McPHATTER, Rowena
JOHNSONVILLE, S.C. - Rowena Poston McPhatter, 77, widow of Fred F. McPhatter, died Thursday, November 29, 2001, at her home.
Mrs. McPhatter was born in Florence County, a daughter of the late Mack K. Poston and the late Carrie Yulee Greenwood Poston. She was a homemaker, a member of the Johnsonville United Methodist Church and the UMW.
Surviving are one son, Frederick F. McPhatter, Jr., of Darlington, S.C.; step-son, Ronald McPhatter of Atlanta, Ga.; step-daughter, Elaine M. Smith of Winnsboro, S.C., three brothers, J. Paul Poston of Piedmont, S.C., David M. Poston of Johnsonville, and Jerry T. Poston of Columbia; sister, Virginia P. Chinnes of Hanahan, S.C.; five grandchildren, Jessica, Caitlin, and Jade McPhatter, Heidi and Daniel Whitt, all of Darlington, S.C.; great-grandchild, Adrianna Shealy of Darlington, S.C. Mrs. McPhatter was predeceased by four brothers, Merrill, Lance, Daltrum and Max L. Poston; sister, Nellie P. Whaley; step-son, Reginald McPhatter.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, in the Johnsonville United Methodist Church. Burial, directed by MORRIS FUNERAL HOME OF HEMINGWAY, will be in the Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday.

ROLLINS, Elizabeth
Elizabeth Waddell Rollins, 86, of Summerville, widow of Richard David Rollins, died Thursday in a local nursing home.
Graveside funeral services will be held this afternoon at 12 o'clock in Holy Cross Cemetery, James Island. A memorial service will be held at a later date at The Presbyterian Home of South Carolina.
Friends may call at James A. Dyal Funeral Home, Summerville, from 10 until 11 o'clock this morning.

Mrs. Rollins was born on July 15, 1915, in Sumter, S.C., the daughter of the late Howard Stokes Waddell, Sr., and Ola Garland Waddell.
She attended Sumter schools, Lander College and Furman University.
She was a member of Harborview Presbyterian Church, James Island.
Surviving are, three daughters, Elizabeth R. Tucker of Charlotte, N.C., Suzanne G. Rollins of Summerville, Ellen R. Davis of Savannah, Ga.; brother, Howard S. Waddell, Jr., of Florence; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Tucker Cline of Pineville, S.C., Paul Chambliss Tucker, III, of St. Louis, Mo., Jeremy Rollins Davis of Savannah, Ga.; three great-grandchildren.

CLINARD, Allan
Mr. Allan Roy Clinard, age 64, of Winston-Salem, N.C., was the beloved and faithful husband of Sandra Hudspeth Clinard. He died peacefully at Forsyth Medical Center on Thursday, November 29, 2001. He was born to Roy Winfred and Dessie Morris Clinard on October 12, 1937, in Guilford County, N.C. Allan was a career long-distance truck driver, whose handle was "Gunsmoke," and traveled many miles across the eastern seaboard. From his many travels, Allan made life-long friends, who will remember him for his quiet manners, hard work, and friendly smile. He was awarded several safe-driving awards throughout his long career.
His parents, and a daughter, Emily Clinard, and a sister, Catherine Brendle, preceded him in death.
Allan is survived by his loving spouse, Sandra; two daughters, Cindy Kicklighter and her husband, Bob, of Charleston, S.C., and Jan Clinard of Winston-Salem; three sons, David Neal of Davidson County, N.C., Stephen Clinard and his wife, Jeanne of Kitty Hawk, N.C., and Jonathan Clinard of Winston-Salem. Allan was a warm and loving grandfather, "Papaw," to Phillip and Adam Clinard, David Powell, Robby Kicklighter, Sarah and James Clinard; three brothers, Paul Clinard of Greensboro, N.C., Nolan Clinard of Cleveland, Ga., and Lowell Clinard of High Point, N.C.; one sister, Kay Pruitt of Union Grove, N.C.; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. His faithful four-legged "children" also survive Allan.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., on Sunday, December 2, 2001, at VOGLER AND SON'S REYNOLDA ROAD CHAPEL, 2951 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, N.C. The Rev. Todd Brock will officiate. MIXON, Charles
Mr. Charles Anthony Mixon, 63, of Lakeside Trailer Park, Old Quitman Road, Adel, Ga., died in a Georgia hospital on November 29, 2001. Funeral services will be graveside Sunday, December 2, 2001, at 2 p.m., in Carolina Memorial Gardens, North Charleston, S.C., with full military honors.
Visitation will be Friday, from 6 to 9 p.m., at BOONE-LIPSEY FUNERAL HOME, HWY. 41 SOUTH.
Born March 25, 1938, in Cook County, Mr. Mixson was the son of the late Kether Jackson Mixson, Sr., and the late Julia Lewis Dixon. He lived most of his life in Cook County. He was a member of Springhead Baptist Church. He was a retired U.S. Navy Quartermaster.
Survivors include, his wife, the late Bobbie Jean Oliver Mixon, one son, Anthony A. Mixon, North Charleston, S.C.; one daughter, Cynthia L. Mixson, North Charleston, S.C.; one sister, Beulah Handley, Irvinville, Ga. He was preceded in death by, one son, Charles Terry Mixson, three brothers, and three sisters.

HUDSON, Douglas
Douglas Ray Hudson, 48, of Summerville, died on the afternoon of Thursday, November 29, 2001, after an extended illness. The funeral service will be conducted at the graveside, 10 o'clock, Monday, December 3, 2001, in Dorchester Memory Gardens, 11000 Dorchester Road, Summerville. Friends may call from 5 until 7 p.m., Sunday evening, at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., GREENRIDGE ROAD CHAPEL.
Douglas was born November 3, 1943, in Loris, S.C., the son of the late Garland Bryant and Brookie Futrill Hudson. He was a cookie distributor with the Murray Baking Company.
He is survived by his wife, Tammy, his four daughters, Linda (Jody) Pooser of North Charleston, Tamara Schuitema of Summerville, Misty Schuitema of Ladson, Christine Thomas and his son Bryant Ray Hudson, both of the home. His brother, Bryant (Doris) Hudson of Cherraw, his sisters, Shirley (Steve) Lackey of Hickory, N.C., and Carolyn (C.R.) Turnage of Dillon and four grandchildren also survive.

JOHNSON, Grover
GEORGETOWN - Grover Beckman Johnson, 77, died Friday, November 30, 2001, at the Manor House of Georgetown.
Mr. Johnson was born November 21, 1924, in Georgetown, a son of the late Ernest Cromwell Johnson and Ethel Forbes Johnson. He lived in Georgetown all of his life, graduated from Winyah High School, and served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Johnson retired from International Paper Company in 1988. He attended Johnson Chapel Baptist Church.
Surviving are, two sons, G. David Johnson of Atlanta, Ga., and G. Kenneth Johnson of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Richard Johnson of Georgetown; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Sunday afternoon, December 2, 2001, at 3 o'clock, at Johnson Chapel Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Tommy Earl Barnhill. Burial will follow in the Churchyard under the direction of the Georgetown Chapel of MAYER FUNERAL HOME.

COUCH, Margaret
Entered into eternal rest, Wednesday, November 21, 2001, Margaret Ann Halligan Couch. Residence, Charleston, S.C. Funeral services and burial will be private.
Ms. Couch was born in New London, Conn., the daughter of Charles Victor Halligan and Virginia Ann Larson Halligan. She was a quality control inspector with Cummings Marine.
Surviving are one daughter, Marie Dialie Couch of Wash.; three sons, Mark Brian Couch of Moncks Corner, S.C., Van James Couch and Glenn Thomas Couch, both of Charleston, S.C.; three brothers, Bob Halligan of Providence, R.I., Marty Halligan Yips Landing, Mich., and Butch Halligan of New London, Conn.; one sister, Cathy Neice of Virginia Beach, Va., and two grandchildren.

Charles Hersherl Crapse, 68, of Edisto Island, died Wednesday evening.

Born on September 30, 1933 in Hampton, S.C., a son of the late Tom Walker and Rosa Lee Crapse.
He attended schools of Hampton County, was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the Korean Conflict and was a member of VFW Post #445. He was a painter and belonged to the Baptist faith.

Burial will be in the Shady Grove Cemetery. Mr. Allen was born December 23, 1947 in Washington, D.C., a son of Washie Allen, Sr. and the late Mrs. Rosa Bell Cobb Allen. He attended Williams Memorial High School of St. George and was a member of the Shady Grove United Methodist Church.

Gibson, Mr. Daniel Gibson, Jr. and Ms. Corris R. Gibson all of New York City. CORRY, William H.
William H. Corry, 89, of Charleston, S.C., former branch manager of Motors Insurance Corps died at his residence on East Battery Thursday afternoon, November 29, 2001.
He was born in Atlanta, Ga., a son of Herman Smith Corry and May Sockwell Corry. In 1929, he moved with his family to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he graduated from Central High School. He married Edith Campbell September 16, 1934.
In 1936, he joined General Motors as an insurance adjuster. He was transferred to the Allison Aircraft Division of General Motors, where he served as a special liaison officer between General Motors and the Air Force. After the war, in 1946, he returned to the insurance division and was transferred to Charleston, S.C. to open their branch office. In 1971, he retired after 35 years with GM and remained in Charleston.
He was a devoted member of the French Huguenot Church and a member of the Preservation Society, Gibbes Museum of Art and the Historical Society. He was an avid and knowledgeable collector of antiques.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Edith Campbell Corry, his sister Louise Corry of Charlotte, N.C., five nieces and three nephews.
The funeral service will be held at the French Huguenot Church, Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. A private burial will be held at the church cemetery after the service. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, December 1 at their residence on 13 East Battery.

BAXTER, Carrie Lee
BOWMAN, S.C. - Mrs. Carrie Lee Miller Baxter, 73, of 9108 Charleston Highway, Bowman, S.C. died Tuesday, November 27, 2001 in a Charleston hospital after an extended illness. She was the widow of Joe Nathan Baxter. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 1, 2001 (today) at 1:00 p.m. at the Second Providence Baptist Church, Bowman, S.C. with Dr. S. B. Marshall, officiating. Burial will be in the Second Providence Cemetery.
Mrs. Baxter was born February 2, 1928 in Bowman, S.C., a daughter of the late Rev. Isiah Miller and Mrs. Carrie Bowman Miller. She attended the public schools of Dorchester County. For many years Mrs. Baxter operated a grocery and variety store. She was a member of the Miller's Chapel Baptist Church and later she joined the Second Providence Baptist Church where she served as a member of the missionary society, senior choir, prayer band and vice-president of the Pulpit Aid. She was also a member of the St. George Branch of the NAACP. Mrs. Baxter was an astute church worker and a very successful businesswoman.
Surviving are, one son, Landie L. Baxter of St. George, S.C., five daughters, Mrs. Eva L. Sumter and Mrs. Betty (James) Bowman both of St. George, S.C., Mrs. Jo Anne L. Gilliam of Orangeburg, S.C., Mrs. Shirley (Richard) Davis of Marietta, Ga., Mrs. Madeline Cobbs of Branchville, S.C.; a grandson whom she raised, Eric (Bronica) Glover of Charlotte, N.C., four sisters, Mrs. Ella Riggins and Mrs. Annie B. (McKinley) Brooks all of Washington, D.C., Pastor Lelia Wims of Orangeburg, S.C. and Mrs. Pearline Brooks of Santee, S.C., one brother, Ernest (Madeline) Miller of Washington, D.C. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

MCMILLAN, JR., James
WALTERBORO - Mr. James Vernon "Jim" McMillan, Jr., 76, of Floodgate Lane died Friday at a local Charleston hospital. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Sandy Run Baptist Church in Hampton with Rev. Paul Reid officiating. Interment will follow in the church Cemetery, directed by the Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home.
Mr. McMillan was born in Bamberg County, a son of the late James Vernon McMillan, Sr. and Thelma Priester McMillan. He was a retired forest products manager, a member of Sandy Run Baptist Church in Hampton, president of the Middle Cherokee Hunting Club, former president of the Walterboro Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the National Chamber of Commerce.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Barbara Harvey McMillan, sons, Jim V. McMillan, III of Dadeville, Alabama, and Steve McMillan, Sr. of Walterboro, daughters, Nancy M. Stackhouse of Dillon and Jan M. Bowen of Walterboro, a brother, Rev. Allen McMillan of Hampton, nine grandchildren and four great- grandchildren.

SHIER, Louise C.
Louise Cirsosky Shier, 81, widow of J.L. Weatherford and Magnus E. Shier died Wednesday, November 28, 2001 at her residence. Mrs. Shier was born Sunday, November 7, 1920 in Florence, S.C., the daughter of Joseph and Pauline Gratzic Cirsosky. Funeral services and burial will be private. Surviving are a daughter, Paula Ball of John's Island; a son, James A. Weatherford of Skandia, Mich.; two grandsons, Mathew L. Ball of John's Island and Joe Ball of Rosendale, Mass. PINCKNEY, Helen
BEAUFORT, S.C. - Helen Kasper Pinckney, 63, wife of Louis W. Pinckney, Sr., died November 30, 2001, at her residence.
Family will receive friends on Sunday, December 2 , from 2-4 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home. Graveside funeral services will be held on Monday, December 3 at 11:00 a.m. at Beaufort National Cemetery.
Mrs. Pinckney was born on November 26, 1938, in Taylor, Tex. to Jerry Kasper and Anna Zak Kasper.
She was Vice President of Quality Builders, was District Commissioner of the Lowcountry Pony Club for eight years, and worked in the catering business. She was a member of St. Helena's Episcopal Church.
She is survived by her parents of Beaufort, her husband of Beaufort, a son, Louis W. Pinckney, Jr. of Beaufort, two daughters, Alicia Pinckney Story of Charleston, Anna Marie Pinckney of Beaufort, and two grandsons.
