BASKIN, Edward
BISHOPVILLE, SC - Edward Briggs Baskin, 86, husband of Kathleen Lazar Baskin, died Saturday, December 1, 2001 at his home.
Born in Summerton, he was the son of the late John Sewanee Baskin and the late Mary Richardson Briggs Baskin.
Mr. Baskin was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Bishopville High School and Clemson University Class of 1937. After graduation from Clemson College, he served as County Agricultural Agent in Williamsburg, Florence, and Calhoun counties. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving from 1941-1945 until his discharge as Lt. Col. Mr. Baskin returned home to run the family dairy farm, in Bishopville, and was a successful dairy farmer and business until his retirement in 1990. He served and held many offices with The Farm Bureau, Soil Conservation Service and National Independent Dairy Association. He also served on the A.S.C.S. State Committee and was a delegate to the National Cotton Council. He served as president of the S.C. Jersey Cattle Club and retired as a lifetime director. He also served as Director and Manager of Sumter Dairies. Mr. Baskin also served in the South Carolina House of Representative and Senate.
Surviving are his wife of the home; one son, Edward B. "Nick" Baskin, Jr. of Lugoff; four daughters, Kathleen D. Towers of Ormond Beach, Fla., Kathleen B. Brungard of Charlotte, NC, Jacquelyn B. Odell, and Maria B. Clayton both of Springfield, VA; one brother, Richard R. Baskin of Charlotte, NC; one sister, Norvelle Baskin Cathcart of Camden; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, in the Bethlehem Methodist Cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth Phelps, Rev. Julian Lazar, and Rev. Ed Davidson officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Monday in the Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home and other times at the home.

DEWITT, Charles
Charles Henry DeWitt, Jr., 79, died Saturday, December 1, 2001, at a local hospital. Born December 3, 1921, in Portland, Tenn., he was the son of Charles Henry and June Anna DeWitt (nee Howell). He was a graduate of Male High School, and worked as a Master Printer in Louisville, Ky. Mr. DeWitt was a sergeant in the Army Air Corps during W.W.II serving as a topographer. He is survived by his wife Mary Jane DeWitt (nee Rueff); three sons and their wives, Charles and Pat DeWitt, New Hope, Ky., James and Connie DeWitt, Moncks Corner, S.C., and Joseph and Lavern DeWitt, Sharonville, Ohio; daughter and her husband June and Mike Smith, West Chester, Ohio; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. PROCTOR, Bernice
Mrs. Bernice Wiggins Proctor, 88, of North Charleston, widow of Daniel W. Proctor, entered into eternal rest on Sunday morning, December 2, 2001, after an extended illness. Friends may call this evening (Monday) from 6 until 8 p.m. at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTH AREA CHAPEL, DORCHESTER ROAD, NORTH CHARLESTON.
The funeral service will be 3 o'clock, Tuesday, in Ogeechee Freewill Baptist Church, Millen, Ga., where she was a member. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial, directed by Crowe-Fields Funeral Home will be in Deep Creek Church Cemetery in Millen.
Mrs. Proctor was born in Millen the daughter of George A. and Rachael Scarboro Wiggins. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her two sons, George Lamar Proctor and Gerald Lee Proctor.
She is survived by seven grandchildren, Gail Johnson of Summerville, Ricky Proctor of Manning, Gerald Proctor of Goose Creek, Tina Griffin of Sumter, Teresa Gaskins of Ladson, Leslie Rushmeyer of Hanahan, and Clinton Proctor of Hanahan. Three sisters, Jackie Wiggins and Esther Beatrice Swanson, both of Millen, Johnnie W. Rosser of Augusta, her brother, Michael A. Wiggins of North Charleston, 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren also survive.
METALLO, Joseph
MURELLS INLET, S.C. - Joseph "Joe" C. Metallo, age 70, of the Mt. Gilead Community, died Saturday, December 1, 2001, after a short illness.
Born March 27, 1931, in Jersey City, N.J., he was the son of the late Frank and Frances Cirillo Metallo. He was the owner of J.C. Metallo and Sons Custom Home Builders and was a member of South Strand Assembly of God Church. Mr. Metallo worked 14 years as a freight conductor for the Pennsy Railroad in New Jersey and was a USMC veteran serving in the Korean War. He was also known to his family as a devoted father and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife, Frances W. Metallo; two sons, Joseph L. Metallo of Murrells Inlet, David C. Metallo and his wife Kathy of Surfside Beach; two daughters, JoAnn Flowers of Myrtle Beach, June Foxworth and her husband Allen of Murrells Inlet; seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, at South Strand Assembly of God Church. Entombment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery Mausoleum.

W. Leon Reynolds, 89, of Ridgeland, S.C., died Saturday, December 1, 2001, in a Savannah, Ga., after a long illness.
Mr. Reynolds was born on May 12, 1912, in Jacksonboro, S.C., the son of the late Walter Reynolds and the late Mary Garvin Reynolds. He was a retired signalman of Atlantic Coastline Railroad after 40 years of service. He was a member of Ridgeland Baptist Church, Ridgeland, S.C.
Survivors include, wife, Eugenia Smith Reynolds of Ridgeland, S.C.; two daughters, Martha R. Barkley of Aiken, S.C., and Helen R. Raye of Dallas, Texas; one sister, Reba Courtney of Aiken, S.C.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Richard Emil Willems, 79, of North Charleston, formerly of Pacific Junction, Iowa, died Saturday in a Charleston hospital. Born in Sherman, S.D., he was the son of Serafein Willems and Mary Dhaemers Willems. He was a retired fork lift mechanic and served in the Navy during World War II. He was Catholic. Mr. Willems was the widower of Evelyn Vennard Willems, survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Melvin D. and Patricia Twite of North Charleston; sisters, Margaret Whittenbel of Farrington, Minn., Helen Hansen of Minneapolis, Minn., and Gladys Ihlen of Pipestone, Minn.; brothers, Lou Willems of Minneapolis, Minn., Robert Willems of Northfield, Mn., and Tom Willems of Garrison, S.C.; granddaughters, Tamara Mincey of Hanahan and Trassa Hogue of North Charleston; great-grandchildren, Amber Mincey, Kenneth Hogue, Jennifer Hogue and Matthew Hogue; a number of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Jerry Wilson Peoples, 60, died Sunday, December 2, 2001 at his home in North Charleston, S.C. Born January 14, 1941 in Conroe, Texas he was the son of Z. and Mary Eleanor Peoples (nee Rose). Mr. Peoples is survived by his wife Bea Linn; three sons: Jerry "Jay" W. Peoples, Jr. and his wife Donna, and James Peoples and his wife Angela, all of Conroe, Texas and Jack Neal Peoples of Nevada; two sisters and their husbands, Nora Beth Martin, Okla. and Mary Coats, Conroe, Texas; grandchildren: Jessica and Willie. He was predeceased in death by his step-son Henry F. Linn, Jr. and is also survived by his daughter-in-law Irene Linn, Hanahan; step-grandchildren: Jeffrey Linn (Deanna), Patricia Golla (Patrick), and Denise Chandler (David); and thirteen great-grandchildren.
