Rhonda Lynne Cope, 38, died unexpectedly, Monday, December 3, 2001, at a local hospital. Born August 7, 1963, in Philadelphia, Pa., she was the daughter of Gary M. and Margaret L. "Peggy" Cope (nee Baker). A 1981 graduate of Goose Creek High School, she was a graduate of Trident Technical College's paralegal program and had earned her certification as a medical transcriptionist. She was employed in the Human Resources department of Jones Ford Dealership. She was a member of the Christian Martial Arts Academy and was prepared to earn her black belt. She is survived by her parents, and brother, Gary D. Cope, all of Goose Creek; aunts and uncles, Mary Elizabeth Lucot, Regis J. Lucot, David W. Baker, Robert K. Baker and Laura Mae Baker, all of Pennsylvania; her boyfriend, Gregory Toro, Summerville; and dear friend and Sensei (instructor) Michael Wilson. Her nephew, Dean Richey, Jr., preceded her in death in January. Funeral services will be held Friday (time to be announced) in the chapel of MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 100 S. Joseph A. "Joe" Norman, 74, husband of 48 years to Norma Burnette Norman, died Sunday, December 2, 2001, at his residence.
Mr. Norman was born in Tazwell County, Va. A son of the late George W. and Ida Deskins Norman. He was a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church. He was a W.W.II U.S. Navy veteran.

Sara (Kamaras) Pellett, 93, of 1900 Ashley Crossing Road, Charleston, formerly of Springfield, Mass., died Tuesday at a Charleston hospital. Born in Providence, R.I., she had lived in Springfield from 1956 until moving to Charleston in 1998. Sara was a member of Kodimoh Synagogue and its sisterhood, Hadassah, Jewish Nursing Home of W. Mass., Jewish Community Center and its Silver Foxes and Belles, Springfield Jewish Federation, and Brandeis University. Sara was married to Lewis Pellet who died in 1977. She leaves a daughter, Marlene Weitz of Charleston, three grandchildren, Jonathon Weitz, Julie Weitz, and June Weitz, all of Charleston, and four great-grandchildren. Furman H. "Sonny" Griffin, 73, of Cape Coral, Fla., and formerly of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., died November 29, 2001, at a St. Petersburg, Fla., hospital. Born in Lodge, S.C., he came to Florida in 1969 from Charleston, S.C. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was the Captain of the commercial shrimper, "Betty M" and owned and operated Shem Creek Seafood in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Christopher "Chris" Matthews, 75, of Columbus, N.C., formerly of Charleston, and husband of Marea Bowman Matthews died Friday, November 30, 2001, in North Carolina. Pleasant Mobile Home Sales, an appraiser, real estate and insurance agent. He was a past Commodore of the Carolina Yacht Club and member of the St. Andrews Society. An avid sailor and golfer, he bred and raised thoroughbred race horses. He retired to the Tryon area of North Carolina. Surviving are his wife, Marea B. Edith Catherine Gustin Grogan, daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother has taken on her last role. Edith Gustin Grogan passed away Sunday, December 2, 2001, in Charleston, S.C. Edith was born on September 11, 1927 to Fritz and Pauline Stiehl Gustin. Edith was a graduate of Demarest High School in Hoboken, N.J. After graduating from school, Edith married Joseph, thus beginning the greatest role of her life. Mrs. Grogan was an extremely loving and devoted individual in every one of the many roles that she acquired in her lifetime. Mrs. Grogan spent her lifetime giving love and receiving love from all she came across. Her faith, family, and friends helped guide her through her wonderful life. Mrs. Grogan is survived by one sister, Nancy Hansen, Lakewood, N.J.; three sons: Joseph Grogan of Fairhaven, N.J., James Grogan of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Gerard Grogan of Winter Park, Fla.; two daughters: Joan Gibson of Lincroft, N.J. and Karen Shellenbach of St. Augustine, Fla. BYRD, William
William Roy Byrd, 76, husband of Margaret Tucker Byrd, died Monday December 3, 2001 at Richard M. Campbell VA Nursing Home in Anderson, S.C.
Born in Rock Hill, S.C. a son of the late Robert O. and Mamie Mangum Byrd. He was a U.S. Army WW II Veteran, where he was in Bastogne, Belgium during the siege of December 1944. He attended the University of South Carolina, then re-enlisted in the Air Force in 1950 and retired in 1968. He retired as a U.I. Field Supervisor with the S.C. Employment Security Commission in 1985. He was a Master Mason, where he was raised in York Lodge #358 in Rock Hill. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Ninety Six.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are two sons, William R. Byrd, Jr. of Keller, Tex. and Robert C. Byrd of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; a daughter Anne B. McKellar of Greenwood; four sisters Louise Masselink of Indiana, Melvenia Hollis of Great Falls, Mary Hamilton of Rock Hill, and Betty Jo Rauch of Lancaster, Calif.; 5 grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Columbia, with the Rev. Robin Fisher officiating.
The body is at Harley Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Tuesday night from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.

HAMPTON, JR., Ambrose
CHAPIN - Service for Dr. Ambrose G. Hampton, Jr., 75, will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Visitation will be at the residence Wednesday from 5-6:50 p.m. DUNBAR FUNERAL HOME, Dutch Fork Chapel, is in charge. Dr. Hampton died Monday, December 3, 2001 at his Chapin home. Born in Stateburg, S.C. on July 24, 1926, he was the son of the late Ambrose G. Hampton and Henriette Dargan Hampton. Dr. Hampton practiced Internal Medicine and Cardiology for 30 years. He retired from Laurel Medical Associates in August 1985.
Dr. Hampton was educated at the Citadel and Duke University School of Medicine. He served during World War II in the U.S. Infantry 102nd Division and he practiced Cardiology at the American Hospital of Paris, France from 1959 to 1961.
Dr. Hampton taught, lectured and wrote extensively during his career. He was Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the USC School of Medicine from 1978 to 1985. Most notable, among his many published works was the manual of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Loading Procedures published by the South Carolina Heart Association.
He was a member of the Emergency Medical Services Committee for the Columbia Medical Society, Emergency Medical Services Committee for the South Carolina Medical Association, and the Medical Advisory Committee of Midlands Technical School. Dr. Hampton served as President of the South Carolina Heart Association in 1975 and was Chairman of Departments of Internal Medicine at Richland Memorial and Providence Hospitals.
Dr. Hampton was an avid jazz fan and musician and a well-known art collector. Besides contributing to music, dance and theater groups, he was a leader of the Columbia Music Festival Association, the Jazz Foundation of Columbia, and was President of the Columbia Art Association (Museum of Art). He was a former member of the Spoleto Festival board in Charleston and the South Carolina Museum Commission. Dr. Hampton's civic and social affiliations included membership in the Columbia Ball, the Society of the High Hills of Santee, the St. Cecilia Society and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.
Surviving are his wife, Joanne B. Hampton; daughter, Ann Hampton LaVecchia of Sullivans Island; son, Anthony Hampton of Columbia; stepdaughter, Tracy M. Sutherland of Columbia; sister, Henriette H. Morris of Columbia; grandchildren, Nicholas N. LaVecchia, Jr. and Olivia D. Hampton; and a step-grandson, Tivis C. Sutherland.

Mr. Charpia was born September 24, 1959 in Charleston, S.C., a son of the late Grady Charpia and Alice Knight Charpia. He was a graduate of Hanahan High School. He was self-employed as a carpenter. He was a member of Northwoods Assembly.

MOORE, Steven
YEMASSEE - Mr. Steven Ackerman "Mack" Moore, 65, of Yemassee died Wednesday at a local Charleston hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Yemassee Baptist Church with Rev. John Roland officiating. Interment will follow in Ebenezer Cemetery, directed by the BRICE W. HERNDON AND SONS FUNERAL HOME.
Mr. Moore was born in Colleton County, a son of the late James O'Neal Moore and Jessie Blocker Moore. He was a retired painter and was a member of Yemassee Baptist Church, a member of Ducks Unlimited, and a former member of the South Carolina Shrimpers Association.
Surviving are three brothers, Jack Moore, Colin Moore, and Stanley Moore, all of Yemassee, and three sisters, Louise Thomas of Walterboro and Linda Godwin and Patsy Ogden, both of Yemassee. He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert Moore and Jimmy Moore.
The family will receive friends at Yemassee Baptist Church from 10:00 a.m. Friday until the service hour.
