MYRTLE BEACH - Sarah J. Southern, 80 died Friday, December 7, 2001 at a local Charleston hospital.She was born in Greenville, S.C. a daughter of Lemuel Reid and Lillian Eugenia Snellgrove Jackson. She was the widow of Ernest F. Southern and predeceased by a son, Reid J. Southern.Mrs. Southern was a graduate of Columbia College and taught in the Myrtle Beach school systems. She was a member of the All Saints Episcopal Church, involved in the Women in Discipleships, and members of the Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery Committee.Survivors include two sons, John M. Southern of Augusta, Ga., Ernie "Buzz" Southern and wife, Judy of McClellanville, S.C., a daughter, Lidy S. Hurt of Surfside Beach. He was a member of the Society of Broadcast Engineers, a member of the N.C. Gun Collectors Assn., a member of Phi Sigma Kappa, and a member of the United Methodist Church. He was a field representative for the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Assn., a former editor of the Holly Hill Observer, and built the first radio station in Holly Hill. Mr. W. Mike DeLoach, 86, of 704 Nix Street in Hampton, died late Friday night at his residence after an extended illness.Mr. DeLoach was born in Hampton County, January 17, 1915, a son of the late Oneal and Bell Brunson DeLoach. He had retired from Westinghouse Corp. in Hampton and was a member of the Staffords Baptist Church. He had served in the Army during World War II.Surviving are his wife: Helouise Wooten DeLoach of Hampton; one son, Milton DeLoach of Hampton; two daughters, Louise Smith of Varnville and Carol Smith of Hampton; one brother, Melvin DeLoach of Hampton; and three sisters, Bernice Mixon of Hampton, Velma Breland and Irene Hadwin both of Nixville. Lt. Rudolph Melvin Dempsey, 79, husband of Vivian Wiggins Dempsey, of 211 McSwain Drive, died December 8, 2001. Born in Beaufort County, he was a son of the late Julius W. and Rose Nell Stone Dempsey. Mr. Dempsey retired as a Lieutenant with the State Highway Patrol after 38 years of service. He was stationed in Florence, Charleston, Lancaster, Spartanburg and Greenville. He was a member of Overbrook Baptist Church, a Shriner, a member of the Scottish Rite Temple, Clemson IPTAY and the South Carolina Troopers Association. He served in the U.S. Navy for eight years. Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Patricia Smith of Summit, NJ, and Pamela Simpson and her husband, David, of Greenville; one sister, Frances Stern of California; two brothers, Jack and Davis Dempsey, both of Beaufort; six grandchildren, Jeffrey, Meredith, and David Smith, and Tyler, Lauren and Christopher Simpson. He was predeceased by two brothers, Charles and Malcolm Dempsey. Services will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. at Overbrook Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Lance and the Rev. She attended Union County, Florida public schools and was a 1951 graduate of Florida Southern College. Mrs. Neth taught at John Cox Elementary and, for many years, Central Avenue Elementary School. She was a member of the Roper Hospital Auxiliary and Delta Zeta sorority and formerly belonged to First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Lakeland. Mrs. Neth is survived by her husband of 50 years, Carl N. Neth, one daughter, Susan Neth Howell and husband Scott, two granddaughters, Caroline Cullom Howell and Rebecca Reed Howell, all of Charleston, SC. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday, December 9th at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) on Orange Grove Rd., in Charleston. He was devoted to his family and a member of Englewood Methodist Church. MYRTLE BEACH - Sarah J. Southern, 80 died Friday, December 7, 2001 at a local Charleston hospital.She was born in Greenville, S.C. a daughter of Lemuel Reid and Lillian Eugenia Snellgrove Jackson. She was the widow of Ernest F. Southern and predeceased by a son, Reid J. Southern.Mrs. Southern was a graduate of Columbia College and taught in the Myrtle Beach school systems. She was a member of the All Saints Episcopal Church, involved in the Women in Discipleships, and members of the Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery Committee.Survivors include two sons, John M. Southern of Augusta, Ga., Ernie "Buzz" Southern and wife, Judy of McClellanville, S.C., a daughter, Lidy S. Hurt of Surfside Beach. Her grandchildren, Ashley, Mary Catherine, and Anna Reid Southern, Rebekah and Jessica Hurt.Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 11, 2001, at the All Saints Episcopal Church in Pawleys Island. HOLLY HILL - Robert Carroll "Bert" Rickenbacker, 61, of 1001 McCoy St., Holly Hill, died Friday in a Charleston hospital.The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday, December 10, 2001 at the graveside in the Holly Hill Cemetery with Rev. Albert Cox officiating. Visitation will be following the graveside service.Mr. Rickenbacker was born in Columbia, a son of the late Robert Carroll Rickenbacker and Doris Stokes Rickenbacker. He was a member of the Society of Broadcast Engineers, a member of the N.C. Gun Collectors Assn., a member of Phi Sigma Kappa, and a member of the United Methodist Church. He was a field representative for the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Assn., a former editor of the Holly Hill Observer, and built the first radio station in Holly Hill. He was founder and president of the Eutaw Company.Survivors include his wife, Judith Marilyn Rickenbaker Rickenbacker of the home; daughters, Maj. Judith M.R. Krause of Chicago, and Miss Julienne Alexis Rickenbacker of Bishopville; sons, Robert C. Rickenbacker of Holly Hill, and Laurin Nicholas Rickenbacker of Camden, Ark.; sister, Mrs. Doris June Avinger of Holly Hill; brother, Richard S. WALTERBORO - Paul Leith Lucas, Jr., 80, president of Lucas Electric Co., died Friday at Trident Regional Medical Center.Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the graveside in Live Oak Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Jim Williams and directed by the FRED PARKER FUNERAL HOME.Mr. Lucas was born November 20, 1921 in Walterboro, a son of the late Paul Leith Lucas and Thomasine Witsell Lucas. Mr. W. Mike DeLoach, 86, of 704 Nix Street in Hampton, died late Friday night at his residence after an extended illness.Mr. DeLoach was born in Hampton County, January 17, 1915, a son of the late Oneal and Bell Brunson DeLoach. He had retired from Westinghouse Corp. in Hampton and was a member of the Staffords Baptist Church. He had served in the Army during World War II.Surviving are his wife: Helouise Wooten DeLoach of Hampton; one son, Milton DeLoach of Hampton; two daughters, Louise Smith of Varnville and Carol Smith of Hampton; one brother, Melvin DeLoach of Hampton; and three sisters, Bernice Mixon of Hampton, Velma Breland and Irene Hadwin both of Nixville. There are 9 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday in the Hampton 1st Christian Church, with burial in the St. Paul Cemetery directed by PEEPLES-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME in Hampton.Friends may call at the Chapel in Hampton from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, and Monday until the hour of services.
