BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Mary Green, 62, died Monday in Brooklyn, N.Y.
The funeral will be Sunday, December 23, 2001, at 2:00 p.m. in the Ebenezer C.M.E. Church, White Hall Community in Colleton County. Burial will be in Heyward Cemetery.
Mrs. Green was born in Green Pond, S.C. and was the daughter of Emily and Joe Green. She received her education in the public schools of Colleton County and further her education in New York City. She was employed with Doneiger Brokerage Services in New York City.
She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and was a member of the Women Benevolent Circle.
Surviving are her mother, Emily Smith of White Hall; one brother, Jim Smith of White Hall; seven sisters, Anna Huggins, Carol Smith, both of White Hall, Louise Smith, Brooklyn, N.Y., Florie Elliott, Bronx, N.Y., Willie Mae Morgan, Akron, Ohio, Lillian Smith, Rahway, N.J. and Susie Kinnery, Jersey City, N.J.

Alma E. Caines, 96, of Summerville died Thursday, December 20 at a local hospital. Born in Charleston to the late George and Mary Sawadski Buero. She was married to the late Emory E. Caines. Mrs. Caines attended Charleston County Public Schools. She was a member of St. Mary of the Annunciation Catholic Church. She is survived by her daughter, Betty Thomas of Summerville, a brother, Harold I. Buero of James Island, a granddaughter, Beth and Bud Warren of Summerville, and great-grandson, William Warren of Summerville and was predeceased by grandson, Tony Thomas. Funeral services will be today 11 a.m. Saturday, December 22, 2001 in the funeral home chapel of MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 150 Wentworth St. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. Mr. Whobrey was born in Grayson County, Kentucky, on August 5, 1926, the son of Enoch and Bertie Heath Whobrey. He retired from the USAF and also retired as a Public Safety Officer from the Medical University of South Carolina, where he was the recipient of the J.P. Strom Award.
Surviving are his wife of North Charleston, S.C.; one daughter, Tina W. Aull (Daryle) of Goose Creek, S.C.; four sisters, Bertie Marie Vincent, and Gladys Duvall of Leitchfield, Ky., Elaine Clemmons and Loraine Hodge both of Texas; one grandson, Ian Douglas Aull of Goose Creek, S.C. He was predeceased by a brother, Enoch Ambrose Whobrey.

GREEN POND - Rosa Lee Aiken, 38, died Sunday, December 16, 2001.
The funeral will be 12 noon, Saturday, December 22, 2001, in Jerusalem A.M.E. Church, White Hall. Burial will be in White Hall Cemetery.
Ms. Aiken was born in Colleton County and was the daughter of Lonnie B. Aiken and Ester Mae Aiken. She was a graduate of Walterboro High School and received a Bachelor Degree in Special Education from South Carolina State University, and a Master Degree in Special Education for South Carolina State University. She was presently enrolled at the University of South Carolina (Spring Semester) to pursue a Ph.D. in Special Education.
She was formerly employed as a teacher by Jasper and Colleton Counties School Districts. She also did homebound instruction during her spare time.
She was a member of Jerusalem A.M.E. Church and served a church secretary, steward, assistant YPD coordinator and an usher. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Orangeburg Chapter, S.C. Education Association and the Colleton County N.A.A.C.P.
Surviving are, her daughter, Katrina Lyadrian Aiken, a brother, Samuel Aiken; four sisters, Estelle Carter (Jimmy), Albertha Koger (James), Sylvia Aiken and Sallie Aiken and one granddaughter.

Mr. Padgett died Friday, December 21, 2001. Born in Washington, D.C., he was a son of the late Ellison Landrum and Ethel West Padgett. Retired from Blue Cross and Blue Shield, he was serving as President of the Retired Employees Association. He was a former member of the Palmetto Mastersingers. He was also a charter member of Riverland Hills Baptist Church where he served as deacon, member of the Adult Choir, member of the Sonrise Trio and Sunday School teacher for 23 years with the Youth and Single Adult MInistries. He shared a special ministry with his wife called "The Rooms of our Life." He was a talented vocalist and guitarist who inspired others through his love for music and his love for the Lord.
Surviving are his wife, Jean Marshall Padgett; daughters and sons-in-law, Terri and Eddie Goley of Irmo and Kristi and Mike Goodwin of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Michael David Goodwin, Jr., Aimee Madison Goley and Ellison Grace Goodwin; brothers, and sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Padgett of Lexington and Mr. and Mrs. Joe A. Padgett of Georgetown; sister and brother-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Leonard Morgan of Nashville, Tenn.; brother-in-law, John (Robin) Marshall of Columbia; and sister-in-law, Anne (James) Hart of Irmo; and also numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Schwartz was born June 4, 1912, in St. Paul, Minn., the daughter of Nathan Kaswen and Rose Hefter Kaswen. She was a member of Emanu-El Synagogue.
She is survived by son, David Schwartz and his wife Marilyn of Tucson, Ariz.; her daughter-in-law, Barbara Schwartz of Wilmington, Del.; one brother, Morris Kaswen of Los Angeles, Calif.; four grandsons, Stephen Schwartz of Tucson, Ariz., Stuart Schwartz of Atlanta, Ga., Michael Schwartz of Gaithersburg, Md., Bob Schwartz of Gaithersburg, Md., and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son Jerome Schwartz.

SIMONDS, JR., Albert
Albert Rhett Simonds, Jr., 58, a lawyer and expert in public utility regulation, as well as a winner of several national sailing championships, died December 10th at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland. The cause of death was cancer.
Mr. Simonds, who maintained residences in Alexandria, Virginia, and Annapolis, was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He graduated from the Porter Gaud School in Charleston, the Woodberry Forest School in Orange, Virginia, and the University of Pennsylvania Law School (LL.B., 1968).
After service in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, he came to Washington, D.C., to work for the U.S. House Armed Services Committee. He began his career in public utility law in 1970 as an associate and then a partner in the firm of Debevoise & Liberman. He was subsequently a partner in Bruder, Gentile & Marcoux in Washington for 21 years. His practice of regulatory law, chiefly in the electric power area, spanned 28 years during which he represented several major public utility clients and made many significant contributions to the interpretation and application of the Federal Power Act.
Mr. Simonds was an active member of the Federal Energy Bar Association, serving as its treasurer and as a member of its Board of Directors for several years. With his wife, he was a six-time national sailing champion in the Jet 14 Class and an avid tennis player.
His memberships included the Severn Sailing Association, Jet 14 Class Association, which he served as president, the Belle Haven Country Club and the Saint Cecilia Society of Charleston. With his family, Mr. Simonds was a parishioner at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Alexandria.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Marie Celeste Simonds, his daughter, Caroline, of Alexandria, his daughter, Frances, of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, and his parents, Albert Rhett Simonds and Frances Lamar Simonds, of Charleston.

Roseva Shumpert Beshere, 90, of Charleston, a retired teacher with the Charleston County Schools, died Saturday, December 22, 2001 at a local hospital. Visitation will be Wednesday 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 150 Wentworth St., with a vigil service beginning at 6:00 p.m. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held at 9:00 a.m. Thursday, December 27th at The Cathedral of St. John The Baptist Catholic Church with interment in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Mrs. Beshere was the widow of Joseph William Beshere. She was born in Pelion, S.C. to the late Daniel Franklin and Sarah C. Lybrand Shumpert.
She is survived by two daughters, Rose Marie (J. Peter) Murphy of Winston-Salem, N.C. and JoAnn (Kenneth E) Kosobud of Goose Creek, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Beshere attended Chicora College in Columbia and was a graduate of Limestone College. She was a retired teacher of Memminger Elementary School. Past president and reserve member of Delta Kappa Gamma International Educators Society. She was a member of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and the Catholic Women's Club.
