Samuel Simmons
Samuel Simmons, 87, of Williston, died Feb. 10, 2001 at the Aiken Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Feb. 17 at Summer Grove Missionary Baptist Church in the White Pond Community, with burial in the Simmons Family Plot in the Windsor Community. The Revs. Wilbur J. Simmons, Barney Glover and Gary Allen officiated. Simmons Funeral Home of Williston was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Simmons was born in Aiken County. He was the son of the late Charlie Simmons Sr. and Annie Ross Simmons. He was a member of the Summer grove Missionary Baptist Church. He was a member of FFA of B. Society. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corps and in the U.S. Navy for two years. He attended Roberts Technical and Trade Schools in New York, N.Y. He was a retiree of the Phelps Dodge Refining Corp in Maspeth, N.Y.
Survivors are three sons, Howard Simmons of Williston, Kenneth Simmons of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Alonzo Simmons of Freeport, Long Island, N.Y.; two daughters, Yvonne Simmons Lewis of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Renee Simmons of Williston; one brother, Harold Simmons of Aiken; one sister, Grace Allen of Aiken; and six grandchildren.
John Fulmer Creech
John Fulmer Creech, 78, of Barnwell, died Feb. 15, 2001 at his residence.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Feb. 18 at Friendship Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. The Revs. John Nixon and Billy Mew officiated. Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Creech was born in Barnwell County. He was the son of the late John Floyd and Giulia Still Creech. He was predeceased by a grandson, Jonathan Creech. He was a retired boiler operator with Milliken Inc. He was a member and deacon of the Friendship Baptist Church. He was a mason.
Survivors are his wife, Alice Hutto Creech of Barnwell; one son, Jim Creech of Barnwell; three daughters, Elaine Morris of Myrtle Beach, Dianne Sloan of Walterboro and Wanda Crouch of Williston; one brother, the Rev. Wilbur Creech of Barnwell; two sisters, Delores Fail and Jannie Roach of Barnwell; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Esther Chavous Jr.
Esther Chavous Jr., 68, of Barnwell, died Feb. 12, 2001 at the Barnwell County Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Feb. 17 at Guinyard and Sons Chapel in Barnwell, with burial in Union Baptist Church in Barnwell. The Rev. C. W. Phinizy officiated. Guinyard and Son's in Barnwell was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Chavous was born in Aiken County. He was the son of the late Esther and Clarice Chavous. He was married to the late Olivia Garrett. He was a member of the Ned Branch Baptist Church. He was in the U.S. Army.
Survivors are three sons, Anthony Chavous of Chicago, Ill., Kenneth Chavous of Williston and Terri Chavous of North Augusta; one daughter, Rosemary Hendrix of Atlanta, Ga.; three brothers, Levi Chavous of Ridgeland, W.M. Odom and Joseph Chavous of Barnwell; one sister, Christine C. Joynes of Salisbury, Md.; and five grandchildren.
Leroy Walker
Leroy Walker, 82, of Williston, died Feb. 9, 2001 in the Barnwell County Hospital after a brief illness.
Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 14 at St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church in Elko, with burial in the church cemetery. The Revs. A. C. Settles and J. L. Wright officiated. Simmons Funeral Home of Williston, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Walker was born in Elko. He was the son of the late Jimmy Walker and Reaker Felder Walker. He lived in Charleston where he was a member of the Greater Bethel Baptist Church where he served as an usher and Chairman of the Deacon Board until his death. He was a retired roofer of the Charleston Roofing Company.
Survivors are one daughter, Sonya Alston of Charleston; two sisters, Josephine Brown and Stella Toney, both of Williston; 13 grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
Carolyn H. Shank
Carolyn H. Shank, 66, of Harrisonburg, Va., died Jan. 31, 2001 at her home.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Jan. 6, 2001 at Asbury United Methodist Church, with burial in Woodbine Cemetery. Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Shank was born Dec. 27, 1934 in Augusta, Ga. She was the daughter of K.M. and Elizabeth Hale. She was preceded in death by daughter, Elizabeth Kem Lilly.
She grew up in Narrows, Va. and graduated from Narrows High School. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. In 1980 she was appointed to the Harrisonburg City School Board where she served until 1988, with one term as chairwoman.
Survivors are her husband, Pete Shank of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kay S. and David B. Craven and Carol S. and Nathaniel F. Draper, all of Glen Allen, Va.; and three grandchildren, Peter Brian Craven, Jamie Elizabeth Craven and Mason Robert Craven, all of Glen Allen, Va.

Carol Lingould Martinson
Carol Lingould Martinson, 54, of Altamonte Springs, Fla., died Feb. 8, 2001.
Funeral services were held Feb. 10 at the Altamonte Chapel.
Mrs. Martinson was born in Milledgeville, Ga. She was a sales representative in the advertising industry. She was a graduate of Barnwell High School.
Survivors are her husband, Gary Martinson of the home; two sons, Mike Erman of Virginia and Brian Erman of North Carolina; two brothers, Larry Lingould and Clyde Lingould, both of South Carolina; two sisters, Beth Branham of Virginia and Peggy Lingould of South Carolina; and one grandson.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society.
Otis Hankerson
Otis Hankerson, 90, of Williston, died Feb. 8, 2001 at the Silver Springs Health Care Center in Williston.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Feb. 16 at St. Peter Baptist Church in Elko, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. A. C. Settles officiated. Green's Funeral Home in Blackville was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hankerson was the son of the late Normal Hankerson and the late Idella Walker Corbitt.
Survivors are two sisters, Mary C. Moore of Williston and Zady L. Hampton of Augusta, Ga.; two brothers and sister-in-law, Joseph and Margie Corbitt of Cleveland, Ohio and Robert Hankerson of Williston.
Ricky Wayne Wallace
Ricky Wayne Wallace, 52, of Columbia, died March 26, 2001.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. March 28 in the Folk Funeral Home Chapel in Williston, with burial in the Barnwell Memory Gardens in Barnwell. Folk Funeral Home, Inc. in Williston was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Wallace was born in Albertville, Ala. He was the son of Inez French Wallace and the late Sam Wallace Sr. He was a construction superintendent at Shaw Air Force Base. He was a member of the St. Andrews Catholic Church in Barnwell.
Survivors are his wife, Mary Vondenberger Cole Wallace of the home; mother, Inez French Wallace of Williston; three daughters, JoAnne Gavin of Aiken, Deborah Williamson of Blackville and Diana Hutson of Valrico, Fla.; two sons, John Cole of Poulsbo Wash. and James Cole of Barnwell; one brother, Sam Wallace Jr. of Aiken; one sister, Susan W. Anderson of Aiken; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Martha Lee Oswald Salter
Martha Lee Oswald Salter, 80, of Barnwell, died March 27, 2001 in the Barnwell County Hospital.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. March 29 in the Swallow Savannah Cemetery. The Rev. Robert Clyburn officiated. Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Salter was born in Allendale County. She was the daughter of the late John Hull and Mary Lyles Oswald. She was married to the late Fred Salter. She was a retired employe of Evelyn's Jewelry and Gifts. She was a member of the Barnwell United Methodist Church, The Hagood-McNab Sunday School Class, the Jennie Woffard Waite Circle and the Iris Garden Club.
Survivors are two nephews, Wayne and Lawton Browning of Barnwell; and two nieces, Mary Lee McEwen of Charlotte, N.C. and Gertrude Loadholdt of Allendale.

Walterine Lee Harden
Walterine Lee Harden, 96, died March 12, 2001 in the Bamberg County Hospital.
Mrs. Harden was born June 18, 1904 in the Bull Pond Community of Old Barnwell County. She was the daughter of the late David R. and Ella Flowers Lee. She was a member of Magdalene Christian Church where she was named Mother of the Church and a member of Trinity CME Church where she served on the Missionary Society, The Stewardess Board and was superintendent of the church Sunday school. She was also a member of the Allendale Club (Family and Community).
Survivors are one son, James E. Harden of Capital Heights, Md.; one stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Charles and Dorothy Dopson of Miami, Fla.; one granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; one niece, Lavonia S. Brodus of Allendale.
Lizzie Mae Carter
Lizzie Mae "Bee-Bird" Carter, 73, of Williston, died March 25, 2001 at Aiken Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. March 31 at Summer Grove Church in Williston, with burial in the Farmers Friendly Aid of Benevolent Society Hall. The Revs. Wilbur J. Mrs. Carter was the daughter of the late Willie and Alice Simmons Mobley. She was preceded in death by son Curtis "Bojay" Carter. She was a member of Summer Grove Missionary Baptist Church, the Senior Choir and the Pulpit Aid Club. She received her education in White Pond. She was a member of the Farmers Friendly Aid of Benevolent Society in White Pond.
Survivors are two daughters and son-in-law, Mary Mobley Mack of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Marie and Tommie Elliott of Williston; two cousins, Joyce Custus of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Corine Simmons-Corley; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Doyle Stewart Sullivan
Doyle Stewart Sullivan, 82, of Brunson, died March 26, 2001 at the V.A. Medical Center in Augusta, Ga.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. March 28 in the chapel of Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home, with burial in the Hamilton Cemetery near Brunson. Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home, Inc. of Allendale was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Sullivan was born Aug. 4, 1918 in Bolton, N.C. He was the son of the late Fulton Sullivan and Mittie Lee Little Sullivan. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a retired security guard with Westinghouse in Hampton. He was a member of the VFW and the Brunson United Methodist Church.
Survivors are his wife Caribel Robertson Sullivan of Brunson; one daughter, Susan Lightsey of Jacksonville, Fla.; two grandchildren, Leigh Wilson of Allendale and Richard Lightsey of Allendale; and one sister, Laura Melton of Mt. Airey, N.C.
Warren Smith
Warren Smith, 77, of Blackville, died March 23, 2001 at the Aiken Regional Health Care Center after a brief illness.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. March 29 at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Blackville. Green's Funeral Home in Blackville was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Blackville where he served as a Trustee for many years. He was a World War II veteran and a member of the American Legion Post #253.
Survivors are two daughters, Barbara Allen and Marian Smith, both of Blackville; one son and daughter-in-law, Cleveland and Brenda McLamore of Blackville; one son-in-law, Willie Allen of Blackville; one brother and sister-in-law, Alvin and Betty Smith of New York, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Barbara Harley Creech, of Barnwell, died March 26, 2001 at her residence.

Mrs. Creech was the daughter of the late Alix and Mattie Ray Harley. She was predeceased by a brother, Esley C. Harley. She was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church. She was a homemaker.
Survivors are her husband, Charlie F. Creech Jr. of Barnwell; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Harry Bodiford of Williston; one son and daughter-in-law; Eddie and Beverly Creech of Denmark; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Richard Gantt and Eva and Earle Brown, all of Barnwell, Mary and Billy Fail of Olar, and Joyce and Larry Bodiford of Williston; three brothers, J.C. Harley and C.L. Harley, both of Barnwell and John Wade of Sandy Run; and five grandchildren.
Dorothy C. Cope
Services for Dorothy Cales Cope, 68, of Hampton were held Monday, March 26, 2001 at Beaver Dam Baptist Church of Grays with burial in Beaver Dam Cemetery. Sauls Funeral Home of Ridgeland was in charge.
Mrs. Cope, widow of William M. (Preacher) Cope, died Saturday, March 24 in Roper Hospital in Charleston. Born July 28, 1932 in Jamestown, she was the daughter of Ardell Stroble Cales and the late John W. Cales. She retired from Palmetto State Bank after 25 years of service as supervisor and bank officer. She was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church of Grays, former Sunday School teacher and former G.A. Director.
Surviving are her mother of Adams Run; daughters, Diane C. Steinmeyer of Barnwell, Teresa A. Cope of Hampton; brother, John W. Cales Jr. of Adams Run; sister, Leola C. Martin of Greenville; granddaughter, Melissa Diane Steinmeyer of Barnwell.
