Roberta Hilburn Brown, 61, died on the morning of December 31, 2001. Mrs. Brown was born in Charleston on August 5, 1940, the daughter of William R. and Mae Wimberly Hilburn. She was a graduate of Charleston High School and was a retired accountant with WCIV-TV. She was a longtime active member of Sullivan's Island Baptist.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Debra (Ray) Dawson of Augusta, Ga., and Denise (Willard) Hair of Atlanta, her son and daughter-in-law, Robert G. (Christina) Brown, Jr. Roberta is also survived by seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild and her sisters, Jean Mims of Mt. Pleasant, and Delores Miles of Atlanta.

Mr. Breeland was born February 1, 1925, in Charleston, S.C., the son of John Hoyt Breeland and Corine Pearl Crosby Breeland. He was a member of Citadel Square Baptist Church. He was retired after 38 years as a pipefitter with the Charleston Naval Shipyard, Shop #56. He served with the U.S. Navy during W.W.II.
He is survived by his wife of Charleston, one son, Michael Breeland of Tifton, Ga.; three daughters, Donna Brannon of Goose Creek, S.C., Susan Murray of Charleston, S.C., and Sherry Breeland of Goose Creek, S.C.; one sister, Geneive McMillan of Charleston, S.C.; six grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

GRAY, Alta Odoms
Alta Odoms Gray, a long-time resident of Branchlands Retirement Village in Charlottesville, Virginia, passed away at the Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center in Mechanicsville, Virginia, after a brief illness, on Sunday, December 30, 2001. She was visiting her daughter, Ellen in the Richmond area for the holidays.
Born Alta Harriet Odoms in Schooner Point (Fredonia), Indiana, on October 1, 1910, Mrs. Gray was the daughter of John Bert Odoms and Ethel Nelson Odoms, whose roots go back generations in Hamilton and Claremont Counties in Ohio. She was raised in the Cincinnati area and was a graduate of Milford High School. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, she obtained a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Cincinnati in the mid-thirties, a feat that only a small, select group of women of that day achieved. Following graduation she went to New York City, where she proofread mathematics textbooks and tried out and was selected to sing with the New York City Oratorio Society. In the late thirties, she joined the faculty of Duke University, and became the editor of the Duke Mathematical Journal. It was in Durham, North Carolina, that she met and married William Frederick Gray, the first child and only son of William Frederick Gray and Julia Howe Pinckney Gray of Charleston, South Carolina. Mr. Gray was a Foreign Service Officer who was stationed primarily in South America and Europe. The couple lived in the Washington, D.C., area for many years, both between assignments and after his retirement in 1964. He died in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1986. Her daughter Ellen G. Hawkins is the author of the recently published book. Roger Pinckney of England and South Carolina: A Family History.
Mrs. Gray is survived by her three children: William F. Gray, Jr., of Manassas, Virginia; Ellen G. Hawkins of Manquin, Virginia; and Barbara G. Eldridge of Salem, Virginia; by four grandchildren: William E. Gray, III, Robert Christopher Gray, Ellen Catherine Eldridge, and Thomas Jackson Eldridge, and by a sister, Lulu Odoms Coy of Greenville, Ohio.
Funeral Services and burial will take place at the Gray family plot in Magnolia Cemetery, Charleston, South Carolina, on Thursday, January 3rd.

Helen M. Markgraf, 82, of Cross, died Sunday at her residence.

Mrs. Markgraf was born March 23, 1919 at New York State, a daughter of James Conrad and Emma Louise Conrad. She was a Presbyterian. She was the widow of Herbert M. Markgraf.
Surviving are three daughters- Edna M. (Paul) Gonya of Cross; Lorraine Pellegrino of Burleson, Texas; Diana Steffens of Greenport, New York; Son-Robert Markgraf of Brookfield, Illinois; three sisters- Dorothy Puglisi of West Islip, New York; Grace Skidmore of Rock Ledger, Florida; Joan Frasano of Glen Cone, New York; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild.
