Rufus Jones Jr.
Rufus Jones Jr., 70 of New Jersey, died May 19, 2001 at Jersey City Medical Center after a brief illness.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 25, at Shrub Branch Baptist Church, Blackville with the Revs. McKinley Neal and Bernice Parker-Jones officiating. Burial was in the Hope Memorial Park, Barnwell. Fulmer's Funeral Home in Springfield was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Jones was born Nov. 18, 1929 in Barnwell County. He was the son of the late Deacon Rufus Sr. and Louise Jones. He attended the Macedonia High School in Blackville. He joined the Shrub Branch Baptist Church at an early age. He served in the United States Army and was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include his wife, Clarean Jones of Jersey City, N. J.; four daughters, Mary Stroman of Blackville, Carolyn, Cheryl and Veronica, all of New Jersey City, N. J.; six sons, Raymond (Kaye), Robert, Donald, Terrance, Brian and John, all of Jersey City, N. J.; five sisters, Thelma Jones of Hackensack, N. J.,
Elberta Bellinger (Leslie) of Charlotte, N. C., Virginia Beatty (Harold), Rosa Harley (Charles, both of Washington, D. Emmett Marion Odom
Emmitt Marion Odom, 84 of Blackville, died Thursday, May 24, 2001.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 26, at Folk Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randall Gillam officiating. Burial was in Barnwell Memorial Park. Folk Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Odom was born in Barnwell County. He was the son of the late George Trenholm Odom and Minnie Belle Hair Odom. He was a self-employed mechanic, an honorary member of the Blackville Police Department and a member of Healing Springs Baptist Church.
Survivors include Lois Hoover, Alberta Abbott, George Owens, Gypsy Platt, Oliver and Reggie Croft and many other nieces and nephews.
Robert Dicks Bennett
Robert Dicks Bennett, 86 of West Columbia died.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Columbia. Dunbar Funeral Home of Columbia was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Bennett retired from the Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina in 1980.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara (James) Palmer of St. Simons Island, Ga. and Grace (Robert) Lemaster of Simpsonville; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Rosella "Noot" Smith
Rosella "Noot" Smith, 87, died May 20, 2001.
Funeral services were held May 25, 2001 at Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church in Fairfax with the Rev. Benjamin Burison Jr. officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. M. F. Riley's Funeral Home of Fairfax was in charge of the arrangements.
Ms. Smith was born May 14, 1914 in Barnwell County. She was the daughter of the late South Curry and Katie "Latson" Curry. She was married to the late George Smith. She was a member of the Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church, Fairfax. Two sons preceded her in death, Hayward and Jessie Smith.
Survivors include one son, Johnny (Barbara) Kinard of Brooklyn, N. Y.; two daughters, Elizabeth Barnwell of Miami, Fla. and Louise (Ira) Lockhart Jr. of Plainville, Conn.; 17 grandchildren; 13 step grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren and eight step great grandchildren.
Eunice Adams
Eunice Adams, died May 6, 2001 in Edisto Convalescent Center, Orangeburg.
Funeral services were held May 8, 2001 at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Alfred Still officiating. Mole Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Ms. Adams was a native of Barnwell County. She was the daughter of the late Eddie Marcus and Lottie Gwenette Adams. She retired after many years as office manager with the Barnwell County Health Department. She was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church.
Survivors include a nephew, Dr. Baynard Ellis Jr. of Columbia; a niece, Claudia Benton of Brunson; two grand nieces, Cheryl Gooding Stone of Brunson and Dianne Croft of Barnwell; two grand nephews, Michael Benton and Bill Benton, both of Brunson; one great grand niece, Tiffany Maples of Camden and one great grand nephew, Travis Benton of Brunson and two great-great-grand nephews.
Jean Nixon Speights
Jean Nixon Speights, 48 of Gastonia, died May 16, 2001.
Graveside services were held May 18, at Evergreen Cemetery in Blemont, N. C. with the Rev. Dr. Charles Surrett officiating. Memorial services were held at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Kings Mountain.
Ms. Speights was born in Orangeburg and reared in Blackville. She was the daughter of the late John Blair "Jack" Nixon Jr. and Pauline White Nixon of Blackville. She attended Georgia Southern and the College of Charleston, majoring in English.
Survivors include her husband, Samuel J. Speights Jr.; her mother of Blackville; two sons, Jonathan S. and Matthew N. Speights; one daughter, Heather A. Speights, all of the home; one brother, the Rev. John Blair "Johnny" Nixon III of Barnwell.
Frances Elizabeth Finley Ashe Byers
Frances Elizabeth Finley Ashe Byers, 92, of Greenwood died Oct. 15, 2001.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Oct. 17 at Harley Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in the Grandview Memorial Park Cemetery in Rock Hill. Dr. John Livingston officiated.
Mrs. Byers was a native of Laurens county. She was the daughter of the late Percy W. Finley and Lou Ella O'Dell Finley. She was the widow of James N. Ashe and William B. Byers. She taught school in the Rock Hill school district and was of Presbyterian.
Survivors are one son, James N. Ashe of Simpsonville; one daughter, Marilou Ashe Blackburn of Watkinsville, Ga.; two brothers, Jerome Finley of Mountville and George Finley of Charlotte; three sisters, Thelma Elledge of Greenville, Teressa Crawford of Ware Shoals and Rosanna Buchanan of Barnwell; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
John Anthony Thompson
John Anthony Thompson, 30, of San Antonio, Texas died Oct. 15 2001 after a long illness.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Seven Pines Baptist Church in Snelling, with burial in the church cemetery. The Revs. Billy Mew and Wendell Dixon officiated. Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Thompson was born in Allendale County. He was the son of Donnie and Kathryn Moore Thompson. He had lived in Barnwell, Phoenix, Ariz., Neubruke Germany and Sumter.
Survivors are his parents, Donnie and Kathryn Moore Thompson of San Antonio, Texas; one son, Michael Anthony Thompson of San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, Jenny T. Oyler of Turkey and Jessica Villalon of San Antonio, Texas; grandparents, E. Tim and Ann Foy Moore of Snelling and Charles E. Dixon of Barnwell.
Eleanor McGee Allen
Eleanor McGee Allen, 50, of Barnwell, died Oct. 15, 2001.
Funeral services were held Oct. 18 at the First Baptist Church in Barnwell with a private burial. The Rev. Billy Mew officiated. Dyches Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of arrangements.
Ms. Allen was born in Augusta, Ga. She was the daughter of the late L. L. "Jim" and Geneva Thompson McGee Allen. She was a school teacher at Allendale-Fairfax High School where she taught English and French and was recognized by Who's Who of American Teachers. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Barnwell.
Survivors are one son, Hunter McGee Allen of Greer; one daughter, Laurel Ann Allen of Barnwell; one sister, Martha McConnell Kearse of Barnwell; and two brothers, Laverne McGee Jr. of Barnwell and Emery T. McConnell of Edisto Beach.
Jimmy Kearse Jr.
Jimmy Kearse Jr., 47, of Barnwell, died Oct. 3, 2001.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at Second Baptist Church in Barnwell, with burial in Free Will Christian Ministries Cemetery in Williston. The Revs. Isaiah Odom, and O'Bertha Johnson-Barfield officiated. The Lebby Funeral Homes were in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Kearse was born July 4, 1954. He was the son of the late Jimmy Kearse and Florrie M. Creech Kearse. He was a member and usher of The Second Mount Olive Baptist Church of Barnwell. He had worked at the Barnwell County Hospital, Milligan, Zipper Plant, all of Barnwell, Meadow Brook Health Care Center in Blackville, the Baptist Hospital in Columbia and the Adult Day Care Center in Allendale.
Survivors are his mother, Florrie M. Creech Kearse; aunts and uncles, Jeanette C. Snelling and Deacon John B. Snelling of Barnwell, Dora C. Myrick and Deacon Corance A. Myrick II of Laurens, and Eunice Creech of Barnwell.
Kathleen Hayes Caulfield
Kathleen Hayes Caulfield, 93, died Oct. 18, 2001 at White Oak Manor in Spartanburg.
Funeral services were held at noon Oct. 22, at Our Risen Savior, with burial in Westwood Memorial Gardens. Fr. Eugene Leonard officiated.
Mrs. Caulfield was a native of Limerick, Ireland. She was the daughter of the late Patrick and Ellen Skeahan Hayes. She was married to Edward Caufield. She was a member of the Catholic Church of Jesus Christ Our Risen Savior.
Survivors are her husband, Edward Caulfield; nephew and godson and wife, Stephen C. and Mary Guilfoyle Sr.; niece and husband, Eileen and John Skeahan; grandnieces, Mary Guilfoyle of New York, Anne Pyle and her husband Glenn Pyle of Villa Rica, Ga., Catherine Guilfoyle of Spartanburg, and Margaret Madureira of New York and her husband Joe Madureira; and grand nephews, John Guilfoyle of New York, Stephen C. Guilfoyle Jr. of Barnwell, John Michael Guilfoyle of Spartanburg and his wife Debbie, Jimmy Guilfoyle of Yonkers and his wife, Molly, Michael Guilfoyle of New York.

Willie "Shorty" Fred Black, 48, of Barnwell, died Oct. 16, 2001.
Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. Oct. 19 at Reedy Branch Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Rommie Martin officiated. Dyches Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Black was born in Barnwell County. He was the son of the late Johnson and Edna Ward Black. He was a carpenter and a member of the Reedy Branch Baptist Church. He resided in Beaufort.
Survivors are his wife, Janna Black of Beaufort; one son, Daniel Black of Beaufort; and two brothers, Johnson Jay Black of Barnwell and Shelvie Black of Columbia, Pa.

Remell Smith
Remell Smith, 82, of Blackville, died Oct. 11, 2001 at the Barnwell County Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Lees, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Freddie Wright officiated. Guinyard and Son's Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Smith was born in Blackville. She was the daughter of Joseph and Lucille P. Reed. She was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church and graduated from the Macedonia High School of Blackville. After relocating to New York City, she united with the Greater Central Baptist Church. She was a retired seamstress with Altro Workshop. She was married to the late Robert Lee Smith.
Survivors are one son, Stanley Reed of New York, N.Y.; one daughter, Latoya Smith of the home; one brother, Benjamin Reed of Blackville; one sister, Rosa White of New York, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Fannette McMillan
Fannette McMillan, 55, of Allendale, died Oct. 15, 2001 at Harper Nursing Center in Estill.
Funeral services were held Oct. 20 at Simpson United Methodist Church with burial in the All Cemetery. Cave Funeral Service of Allendale was in charge of the arrangements.
Ms. McMillian was born in Allendale County. She was the daughter of Annie Lou Riley McMillan and the late Addison McMillan Sr. She was a member of Simpson United Methodist Church.
Survivors are her mother, Annie Lou Riley McMillan; six sisters, Anna Garvin, Jeannette Hagood, Henrietta Lofton, Margaret and Laura McMillan, all of Allendale and Annette Riley of New York City; and six brothers, Addison Sr., Robert, Melvin, David McMillan, all of Allendale, Ernest McMillan and Willie Riley, both of New York City.
Myrtle Haskell Morris
Myrtle Haskell Morris, 88, of Williston, died Oct. 18, 2001.

Mrs. Morris was born in Barnwell County. She was the daughter of Hammie and Faucie Hutto Haskell. She was a homemaker, member of the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, the Kate Odom Sunday School Class and the WMU and the Wise Old Owl Club of Elko Baptist Church. She was married to the late Buist Morris.
Survivors are three daughters, Gloria M. Frazier, Joy M. Robinson, both of Jackson and Patricia M. Dicks of Windsor; two sons, James Buist Morris of Blackville and Wayne Allen Morris of Hephzibah, Ga.; two sisters, Elizabeth H. Croft and Zelma H. Townsend of Charleston; one brother, Howard Haskell of Barnwell; 23 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Annette H. Creech, 54, of Barnwell, died Oct. 6, 2001 at her residence.

Mrs. Creech was born Sept. 4, 1947 in Barnwell. She was the daughter of the late Harvey and Estelle Hay. She was married to Lewis Creech. She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Survivors are her husband, Lewis Creech; one daughter, Monica T. Creech of Barnwell; one son and daughter-in-law, Lewis Anthony and Kimberly Creech of Aiken; two brothers and sister-in-law, Harvey Hay Jr. and Anderson and Annie Grace Hay of Barnwell; and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Sarah and Perry Bates of Barnwell, Rubena and Frank Houston Jr. of Delray, Fla. and Cloria H.
