PETIT, Elizabeth
Elizabeth von der Lieth Petit, 88, died on Friday, January 4, 2002 at a local nursing home. She was born in Charleston to the late Hugh Augustus von der Lieth and Lottie Marian Roberts von der Lieth. She was predeceased by her husband Lee Woodrow Petit. She was a graduate of Memminger Normal School for Girls, and a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Mrs. Petit was retired from F.W. Woolsworth Co. in Charleston and was formerly with Regal's Dept. Store and Pastime Amusement Co. She was a member of The Golden Fellowship Club and Quis Qui Auxiliary. She is survived by two sons, Richard Lee Petit, of Charleston and Stephen Caldwell Petit of Moncks Corner, S.C.; two grandchildren, Stephen Caldwell Petit, II of Charlotte, N.C. and Paige Marie Petit of Moncks Corner. Funeral services will be held today Monday, January 7, 2002 at 11 a.m. in Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 95 Folly Rd., Charleston, S.C., the Rev. Joseph A. DiRaddo officiating. COLEMAN, James
James A. Coleman, 89, formally of Valdosta, Ga. died Saturday, January 5th at a local hospital in Goose Creek, S.C. Born in Valdosta, Ga. to the late David and Margaret Moxley Coleman. He was married to the late Sarah Virginia Coleman, she passed away in November of 1999. Mr. Coleman served his country in the United States Army and was a WWII veteran. After serving in the Army he was a Fireman with the City of Valdosta where he retired after 25 years. Following his retirement with the fire department he then worked for the City of Valdosta Water and Sewer Plant where he retired from as well. Mr. Coleman was a member of the Fireman's Association, VFW, the American Legion and the First Methodist Church of Valdosta. He is survived by his son, David A. Coleman of Goose Creek, S.C., three daughters, Virginia Maria Coleman Miller of Indiana, Kathryn M. Coleman Bice of Tennessee, and Dorothy Lee Coleman DeLoach of Georgia. Mr. Coleman also was survived by 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. A son James A. Coleman, Jr. predeceased him. The family will receive friends 1-2 p.m. Tuesday, January 8th at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Valdosta, Ga. Graveside services will begin at 2 p.m. in Sunset Hill Cemetery on Tuesday. ISLANDTON - Mr. Jonnie Franklin Sturkey, Sr., 52, of 890 Mears Road died Sunday. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Rice Patch Christian Church. Interment will follow in the church Cemetery, directed by Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home.
Mr. Sturkey was born in Columbia, a son of Ethel Blackwell Sturkey and the late Junior Sturkey. He was the owner of Sturkey Acoustics and was a Marine veteran of the Vietnam war. He was a member of the Shrine Club and was a Mason.
Surviving in addition to his mother of Columbia, are his wife, Joann Roberts Sturkey, four daughters, Denise Sauls of Hampton, Sherri Hughes of Walterboro, Darlene Gibson of Islandton, and Julie Benett of Varnville, a son, Jonnie Sturkey, Jr. of Islandton, 2 sisters, Jeanie Roof of Columbia, and Debbie Garnsey of Lexington, 2 brothers, Wyman Sturkey and Mark Sturkey, both of Lexington, and four grandchildren.

RUFFIN - Mr. John M. "J.M." Bishop, 75, of 7262 Bells Highway, died Saturday at a local Charleston hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Tabor United Methodist Church with Rev. David Cox officiating. Interment will follow in the church Cemetery, directed by the Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home.
Mr. Bishop was born in West Palm Beach, Florida, a son of the late Earl Bishop and Leona Geiger Bishop. He was a retired route salesman with Derst Baking Company, a Navy veteran, and was an avid fisherman. He was a member of Tabor United Methodist Church and was the husband of the late Evelyn Smith Bishop.
Surviving are a daughter, Lynn B. Crosby of Russin, a sister, Hortense B. Reynolds of Walterboro, a brother, Wendell Bishop of North Augusta, his long time companion, Margaret Drawdy of Ruffin, 6 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Born on June 7, 1937, in Rockbridge County, Virginia, a son of the late George E. Potter and Hassie Mae Armstrong Potter.
Mr. Potter worked in the maintenance department with Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, Virginia after he retired from the Navy.
Surviving are his wife of Amerst, Virginia; sons, Tim Potter, Jeff Potter and Justin Potter all of Goose Creek; daughter, Angela Kincaid of Roanoke, Va.; sister, Frances Drain of Rockbridge, Va. He was predeceased by a son William Potter.

She was a proud and loved member of the Ruth Class at James Island Baptist Church. She was known for her loving smile and kind heart.
Mrs. Suggs' eldest daughter, Anne Suggs McMillan, precedes her in death. She is survived by one daughter, Kathryn E. Suggs of James Island, S.C., three sons, George Ken Suggs of Anderson, S.C., Ronald Wayne Suggs and Richard T. HEYWARD, IV, Irvine
Irvine Keith Heyward IV, age 71, of Charleston and Edgefield, S.C., died January 6. He was married to the former Jessie Roberta Greever of Columbia, S.C., for 45 years. Funeral and burial services will be held on Wednesday, January 9, at 11 a.m., at St. James Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at J. HENRY STUHR DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
Born December 13, 1930, in Charleston, S.C., he was the son of Irvine Keith Heyward, III, and Cornelia Smith Coombs Heyward. He is a graduate of Porter Military Academy, Bullis Preparatory School and the U.S. Naval Academy, class of 1954. He subsequently attended the Naval War College and earned a Master of Science degree in International Affairs from George Washington University.
A Captain at the time of his retirement, Mr. Heyward spent his 30 year naval career in progressively responsible positions as a Surface Warfare Officer and as International Affairs Specialist. He was a designated Proven Sub-specialist in Politico-Military Affairs (Middle East, Africa and South Asia), Sub-specialist in Strategic Intelligence and Sub-specialist in Manpower Management. His major sea assignments included commands of a Minesweeper and two Destroyers. He also served as a senior planning officer in the Military Advisory Group in Vietnam during three military campaigns. He worked in the Pentagon as a senior operations analyst and was one of the Navy's leaders involved in the establishment of the International Affairs Specialty. He subsequently spent three years as the Naval Attach‚ to the Republic of South Africa. Mr. Heyward's awards include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Civil Actions Unit Citation, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze stars, the Combat Action Ribbon and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He retired to his family home in Charleston in 1983 following his final assignment as Chairman and Professor of Naval Science at the University of Mississippi.
In addition to his naval career, Mr. Heyward was a timber farmer in Edgefield, S.C. Throughout his life, Mr. Heyward was an active member of the Episcopal Church. He was a Rotarian for 22 years and was a member of the Carolina Yacht Club and the St. Cecelia Society. Mr. Heyward had a life-long interest in history and art, and was a lover of music.
He is survived by his wife, son, Irvine Keith Heyward V, of Raleigh, N.C., daughters, Roberta Heyward Cart of Atlanta, Ga., and Jane Heyward Read of Charleston, and eight grandchildren. Mr. Heyward was preceded in death by his sister, Nena Heyward Anderson Howerton.
