GRAY, April
MYRTLE BEACH - April Storm Buffkin Gray, age 54, of 47th Ave. North, died Thursday, January 17, 2002, at a Myrtle Beach hospital.Born April 11, 1947, in Tabor City, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Jamison and Lucille Strickland Buffkin. She graduated from Tabor City High School in 1965 and attended Southeastern Community College. She was a graduate of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce "Leadership Grand Strand" program. Mrs. Gray gave to her community through the many volunteer events in which she participated. For the Chamber of Commerce she was the "Executive Membership Council" sales leader in 1991 and worked on the many chamber committees. She enjoyed organizing the hospitality at the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony of the City of Myrtle Beach for many years in which her husband plays the role of Santa Claus. She was the "Sun-News Volunteer of the Year 1997," nominated by the American Cancer Society. She was the Chairperson of the American Cancer Society, Myrtle Beach Area, "Relay for Life," 1998. She was a "Kentucky Colonel of the Commonwealth-of-Kentucky." She was president of the Myrtle Beach Shrine Club Ladies Auxiliary in 1994. She was a member of the Omar Shrine Chiefs Unit Ladies Auxiliary, and the Waccamaw Shrine Club Ladies Auxiliary. She was a key staff person on the many South Atlantic Shrine Conventions held in Myrtle Beach. She was a princess of the "Daughters of the Nile," Milcah #77, Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Mrs. Gray was a member of the Shriners "One-Hundred Million Club." She was the current First Lady of Omar Shrine Center as the wife of it Potentate, (President). She worked tirelessly for "The Shriners Hospitals For Children." Mrs. Gray was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church, Myrtle Beach. She worked where she was needed whether as a leader or servant. She served for many years as the Director of the Nursery Department. April loved to feed other, she worked in the church kitchen as part of the special hostess committee and specialized with very little resources in feeding the multitude. She organized the food mission of the "Grand Strand Passion Play," and provided food for the choir. She served as a member on many varied church committees, and loved working with the youth. Mrs. Gray moved to Myrtle Beach in 1965. In the 1970's she worked for the Genco Janitorial Supply. She was office manager for 16 years with Hazel Hatchell State Farm Insurance Agency until Hazel's retirement, and then worked with Wade Davis State Farm Insurance Agency until her illness in December 2001. She served many years as secretary of the Grand Strand Area Life Underwriters Assoc. She and her husband, Bob own Sunco Pool Co.Surviving are her husband, Bob Gray; son, Philip Gray of Conway; daughters, Charlene Hewitt of Danville, Va., Abigail Buffkin Brown and Rachel Gray, both of Myrtle Beach; grandchildren, Brittany, Erica, Chelsea, Tonya, Jasmine, Stephen and Tabitha; brothers, Terry Buffkin of Mt. KINGSTREE - Howard Milton McClam, Sr., 73, died Monday in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Mr. McClam was born in Kingstree, a son of the late Solomon Fant McClam and Ada Floyd McClam. He was a graduate of Hebron High School and an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He attended First Baptist Church in Manning and was a retired insurance agent. Mr. McClam was preceded in death by his first wife, Daisy Barrineau McClam, a brother, Louie McClam and a sister, Nell McKenzie.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Katherine Hicklin Jackson McClam of Manning and Kingstree, 4 sons: Milton McClam, Gary McClam, Warren McClam and Walter McClam all of Kingstree, 1 step-daughter: Katherine C. Jackson of Manning, 2 step-sons: Ransome A. Coleman of Spartanburg and Charles L. Dennie was born on December 10, 1951, in Summerville, S.C., a daughter of the late James H. Harmon and Luvinia Burbage Harmon. She was a graduate of Berkeley High School and Pearl River Junior College, Pearl River, Miss. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse II for Charleston County Detention Center. She was a member of Ridge Baptist Church.
Surviving are, her husband, Jerry Hall of Moncks Corner; one daughter, Dana Rogers Austin of Summerville; one son, Danny Mitchell Rogers, Jr., of Columbia, Miss; one step-son, Jeremy Hall of Ridgeville; three grandchildren, Lila Campbell, Harley Austin, and Wesley Austin all of Summerville; one brother, Michael Harmon of Summerville; six sisters, Patricia H. He is survived by his wife of North Charleston, S.C.; one step-daughter, Jackie Torbit and one step-son, Ralph Torbit, both of North Charleston, S.C.; three sisters, Mrs. Gloria Benzio of Osgenburg, N.Y., Elaine LaPage Massena, N.Y., and Tammy LaPage of Norwood, N.Y.; one niece and one nephew.

MURDEN, Joan
Mrs. Joan Duke Hay Murden, 68, of 501 Shaw Drive, died Sunday evening at the residence of her daughter in Atlanta, Ga., after an extended illness.
Born September 26, 1933, in Mocksville, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Carroll Gordon Hay and Dorothy Ann Adams Hay. Mrs. Murden was a member of the Clan Hay Society, was a homemaker and was a member of the Harmony Presbyterian Church in Crocketville.
She is survived by one son, Michael R. Murden of Dahlonega, Ga.; one daughter, Jean M. McNeill of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, Jimmy Hay of Ellabell, Ga.; seven sisters, Dorothy Miley of Charleston, Judy Williams of Brunson, Martha Brewster of Varnville, Clara Williams of Brunson, Gayle Lairsey of Hampton, Patricia Woody of Powell, Tenn., and Helen Hay of Hampton. There are three grandchildren, Keith A. Murden, Matthew McNeill and Marie A. McNeill.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, at 11 a.m., in the Harmony Presbyterian Church, with burial following in the church Cemetery, conducted by Rev. McCloud Frampton and directed by PEEPLES-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME.

BLUME, Woodrow
Woodrow Wilson Blume, 81, of N. Charleston, died Sunday, January 20, 2002, in a local hospital.
Funeral services will be held, 1 p.m., Wednesday, January 23, 2002, at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Carolina Memorial Gardens, directed by CAROLINA MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME.
Born in Bamberg, he was a son of the late John G. and Gertrude Wilson Blume. Mr. Blume was owner and manager of Dukes Shell Station for over 30 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of W.W.II. Mr. Blume was a member of Springtown Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleise S. Blume.
He is survived by his daughters, Marilyn B. Hunt of N. Charleston, Linda B. Beckman of Irmo, and Jeanette B. Karnahan of Goose Creek; sons, John Blume of Goose Creek, Woody Blume of St. Stephen, and Doyle L. Sams of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; sisters, Johnny B. Dehay of Bamberg, Eloise B. Dled of Olar, Daisy B. Davis and Irene B. Sanders, both of Bamberg; a brother, Ernest L. Blume of Norwood, N.C.; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
The family will be receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home.
