SANTEE - Mrs. Evelyn Thornley "Lynn" Patrick of 481 Santee Dr., Santee, SCdied Wednesday in a North Charleston hospital.
The funeral will be 3 PM Friday, February 1, 2002, in the BowmanSouthern Methodist Church with Rev. Gary Briden, Sr., Rev. Marvin Clark, and Rev. Frank Myers officiating. Burial will follow in the Bowman Memorial Cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 PM.
Mrs. Patrick was born in Moncks Corner a daughter of the late Ernest L. Thornley and Maidia Tarte Thornley. She was a graduate of Macedonia High School and the University of South Carolina with a degree in Secretarial Science. She taught in the Berkeley and Orangeburg County Public High Schools. She was a professor in the Business Department of the Southern Methodist College, Orangeburg.
She was Secretary to the Executive Director of the State High School League. She served in different capacities in the Mental Health Association of Orangeburg County.
She was a member of the Santee Cooper Garden Club and the Ladies Golf Association. She was a member of the Bowman Southern Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband of 52 and a half years, Bryan Patrick of the home; sons, George B. Patrick, III of Santee, Craig E. Patrick of Bowman, and Kurt E. Patrick of Columbia; brothers, Dr. Roy M. Thornley of Holly Hill, and Edward E. Thornley of Georgetown; and five grandchildren.

LIKES, Carl
MT. PLEASANT - Carl James Likes, age 85, a retired college professor, died Tuesday, January 29, 2002. Friends and relatives are invited to attend his funeral services, Friday, at the graveside, Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens, at 11 o'clock. Arrangements by J. Dr. Likes was born in Charleston, a son of Martha Smith Likes and Daniel Ernest Likes. He attended local schools and graduated from the College of Charleston in 1937, with a B.S. degree in Chemistry. He was awarded a DuPont Fellowship to attend graduate school at the University of Virginia, and received his doctorate in Physical Chemistry from Virginia in 1941. He remained at the University for two years as Instructor in Chemistry and then moved to Tulane University, where, as an Assistant Professor, he served for three years, handling both undergraduate and graduate courses in chemistry. From 1946 to 1951, he was Professor of Chemistry and Department Chairman at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, following which he joined the staff of the Virginia Institute for Scientific Research, located in Richmond, as Research Supervisor. His research there involved primarily the use of the newly developed analytical ultracentrifuge in the study of a variety of polymeric materials. In 1958, he was appointed Professor of Chemistry at the College of Charleston, and also served as Chairman of the Department. He was later elevated to the rank of Distinguished Professor and gained emeritus status when he retired in 1982. Beginning in 1947, he served numerous summers on the faculty of the Georgia Institute of Technology.
He was an emeritus member of the American Chemical Society, and he held memberships in the Alpha Chi Sigma Chemistry Fraternity, the Society of Sigma XI, and the Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Fraternity. He was an honorary member of the Chi Beta Phi Scientific Fraternity and the Phi Beta Phi Medical Fraternity. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa as a graduate student and was a charter member of the Chapter established at Hampden-Sydney College. Locally, he was a member of the South Carolina Historical Society and of the Preservation Society. He was a Life and Emeritus member of the University of Virginia Alumni Association and both a Life and Honorary member of the College of Charleston Alumni Association, which in 1986, honored him with its Distinguished Service Award. Honors from the College included an Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Founder's Medal, and in 1995, an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters.
He was married to the late Mary Elizabeth Culin of Charlottesville, Va., and he is survived by one brother, William C. Likes of Mount Pleasant, S.C.

Mr. Preston, Jr., was born in Newport, R.I., a son of Richard Earl and Amelia Doerr Preston. He served in the U.S. Navy, and was a graduate of Newberry College.

RYALS, James
SAVANNAH - Mr. James Dawson Ryals, 80, died Tuesday, January 29, at an area hospital.
He was born in Greenville, S.C., was educated at William and Mary and VPI, and and served during World War II in the Navy and Merchant Marine. Mr. Ryals and his wife, Nancy W. Ryals, made their home in Savannah and Mt. Pleasant. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Mr. Ryals owned and operated Central Radio and Gyrotechnical Instrument in Savannah, Charleston, and other East Coast seaports. He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy W. Ryals, his daughter, Pamela R. Lamas, and two granddaughters, Aimee L. Peavy and Jinan D. Lamas.
Memorial services will be held Friday, February 1, at 11 a.m., at St. Francis of the Island Episcopal Church.
The family will receive visitors following the memorial service.

WALTERBORO - Mr. William H. Robertson, Sr., 69, of 63 Albert St., died Wednesday at a Walterboro hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, at the Chapel of the Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Robertson was born in Colleton County, a son of the late George Hampton Robertson and Minnie Lee Cook Robertson. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and a former member of the South Carolina National Guard. He was a retired truck driver and a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church.
Surviving are four sons, William H. Robertson, Jr., of Walterboro, John H. Robertson of Benton, Ark., David A. Robertson of Fayetteville, N.C., and Robert A. Robertson of Dalton, Ga., three sisters, Georgia R. Stanfield and Juanita Robertson, both of Walterboro, and Mary R. Breland of Sumter, and several grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Bonnie Robertson.

HERNDON, Margie
Mrs. Margie Barnes Herndon, 84, widow of the late Cranel B. Herndon, died Monday afternoon in an Allendale hospital after an extended illness.
Mrs. Herndon was born in Hampton County, February 5, 1917, a daughter of the late James S. and Addie Chesser Barnes. Mrs. Herndon was Treasurer of Herndon Motor Lines in Hampton, a trucking company she and her husband owned and operated for many years. She was a member of the Hampton First Christian Church.
Surviving are, one son, C. Hayne Herndon of Haines City, Fla.; three daughters, Madera Prichard of Colorado Springs, Colo., Barbara Jean (Sally) Chassereau of Columbia, and Libby Smith of Fairfax; six sisters, Ruth Rivers of Walterboro, Betty Freeman, Kate Cook, Annie Jarrell, and Addie Mae Gooding all of Hampton, and Marie Crider of Cope; Mrs. Herndon was pre-deceased in death by three brothers, Frank Barnes, Campbell Barnes, and Tippy Barnes. There are seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Friday, in the Hampton First Christian Church, conducted by Rev. Claude Hydrick, Rev. Tom White, and Rev. Jay Kevie, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery, directed by PEEPLES-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME IN HAMPTON, with Masons serving as Honorary Pallbearers. Friends may call at the Chapel in Hampton from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, and Friday until the hour of services.

He sponsored numerous softball and baseball teams, he donated plaques, achievement awards and jewelry to area middle schools and fund raising events. He was a Jeweler and owner of Loy Harn Jewelers. He was a member of Aircraft Owners and Pilot's Association and loved to fly.

ROGERS, III, Early
In recognition of Early "Butch" Rogers, III, 54, who passed on January 10, 2002. Butch was a retired Navy Master Chief, and served as a Navy Seal in the Vietnam War. He was a member of Sasser Baptist Church and the Masonic Temple.
Butch resided in Charleston, S.C., until relocating to Ocala, Fla. Survivors include his wife, Sandra Rogers of Ocala, Fla. A son, Christopher Stone of Springfield, Ill., two grandchildren, a sister, and three brothers.
A memorial service was held in his hometown of Sasser, Ga., on January 20th, at the Sasser Baptist Church.
Butch was a man of great character, integrity, honor, and truth were his foundation. A true friend to all that his path crossed.
He will be sadly missed by all.
